(More customer reviews)I'm alittle confused on some of the reviews for this movie. Some of the reviews were made before this movie was released and some are of the original Rudolph. Anyway, I was a little skeptical at first when I started to watch this "sequel" . I was sure I wasn't going to like it but to my surprise it was quite enjoyable. The computer animation looks great and you will find almost all the old characters in this movie except Sam. They tried to use voices that sounded like the original characters and they even have a couple catchy songs. My kids just love it. They have already watched it numerous times. They love seeing these familar faces in a new movie. I still prefer the original Rankin/Bass Rudolph but this is a very cute movie that all kids will enjoy.

(More customer reviews)This is just another slap in the face to fans who grew up with these Rankin & Bass holiday classics! Fans of these specials have been wanting a complete box set done including all of these holiday gems, but instead we get a re-release of the same shows! Of course, we get 3 "never before available on DVD" specials only available on this set, so long time fans have to buy this set if they want the 3 new to DVD releases!?
To make matters worse 'Frosty and Rudolph's Christmas in July' is the same defective print where the voices are out of sync with the picture that was released a few years ago!
To make matters even worse than that, some copies have the wrong version of 'The Year Without A Santa Claus'!! I wish someone who cares about these films,, would pick up the ball and get these classic's done right!
Until then folks, I say leave this garbage in the bin and wait for someone who cares to release a proper set. Who wouldn't want a complete set of Rankin & Bass Holiday Classics totally restored?..... raise your hand!..............I thought so! :-D

Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol (2007) Review

(More customer reviews)I thoroughly enjoyed "Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol" when it first was broadcast on television back in 1962. Not only did it feature the then well-known lovable bumbler Magoo, as played by the great Jim Backus, but the musical score was absolutely wonderful. All of the songs in this "Broadway"-style rendition are catchy, and some of them are truly touching and memorable.
Since this brief animated production was created nearly forty years ago, there have been countless new "Christmas Carol" productions featuring everyone from George C. Scott to the Muppets to Fred Flintstone (really!) And yet the VHS release of the Magoo version, still apparently as appealing now as it was decades ago, is my own children's favorite version of Dickens' classic yuletide tale. In fact, my younger son at age three used to beg me to play this video again and again at Christmastime, calling it "Back, Back, Back," based upon the opening song in which Magoo sings about how it's "great to be back, back, back on Broadway."
This cartoon is reasonably true to the details of the original story, and yet adds its own bits of humor and whimsy. There also is a generous dose of Magoo "nearsightedness" humor associated with the premise that Magoo is playing the role of Scrooge in a Broadway production.
As other reviewers have indicated, the casting overall is first-rate and the production is superb throughout. This is truly a gem of a Christmas video and I cannot recommend it highly enough.

So, I guess aside from the featurettes and the different bonus episode on ITGP,CB, the remastering and 6-track music cd, this set is pretty much like the one from 2000. If you don't have that set, then I would recommend this set! Or if you're a big Peanuts fan like me, you'll probably get this set and sell the old one. The holidays wouldn't be the same without these Peanuts specials.

Holiday Inn (Special Edition) (2006) Review

(More customer reviews)I just finished watching the newly released Special Edition of Holiday Inn. I was AMAZED at the clarity of the picture. I've never seen a print of this film looking so pristine. Even on just a regular, 20" non-HDTV set, the hairs askew on top of Bing's toupee during the famous White Christmas scene are plainly visible. Now if you can see single hairs on a person's head during a medium shot on a small television set, that's a stunningly clear picture!
The audio as well is crisp and clear with rich bass and treble tones. If you watch the film with the audio commentary on, you'll hear the dulcet tones of Ken Barnes relating some fascinating tidbits about the making of the film, the songs (one particularly interesting part concerns the verse to White Christmas), the cast, etc. All is enhanced by sound bites from Bing and Fred Astaire themselves in archive audio material from the 1970's. As an example, Bing speaks of the continuing sales of his recording of White Christmas as late as 1974, how he felt it was due in part to people giving the record as a Christmas gift.
The real gems are the bonus features, particularly the 45 minute long mini feature A Couple of Song & Dance Men. Ken Barnes is joined by Fred Astaire's lovely daughter Ava sharing biographical memories of both Bing and Fred, along with trivia tidbits. Ava shows and reads some of the letters Fred Astaire wrote to his wife while on a USO tour in England with Bing in 1944, and telegrams to Fred from Bing, Cole Porter, and Irving Berlin are also shown on screen. All is pieced together nicely with song excerpts from Bing's films, coming attractions trailers, and newsreel footage, including Bing opening the Stage Door Canteen in 1944.
The other, shorter bonus feature runs 7 minutes and is titled All Singing - All Dancing. Ken shares some rare behind the scenes photos and techniques of how musical numbers were filmed, beginning with the early talkies. He shows how the orchestra and singer were together on the set and recorded as one.
The original theatrical trailer for Holiday Inn is also included.
All is wrapped up nicely with a slip-cover that goes over the DVD case. When compared with the two-on-one DVD of Holiday Inn and Going My Way that's been out for many years now, the difference in quality is plainly visible. The Holiday Inn print looks somewhat fuzzy or "muddy" in quality when watched after seeing the brilliance of the newly restored print used on this Special Edition.
In short, this is a DVD that's well worth having. If you want the definitive presentation of this classic Holiday film, this is it! Bravo Ken & co.

A Christmas Carol: The Musical (2004) Review

(More customer reviews)If you were ever in New York around Christmas time from 1994 to it's tenth and final year in 2003 the number one show to see would have been Madison Square Garden's A CHRISTMAS CAROL presented first in 1994 with Walter Charles as Scrooge and in later years F. Murray Abraham and even Tim Curry! The stage adaptation was the most elaborate spectacle you could ever wish to see on-stage with magical sets, fantastic costumes and even an indoor snowfall! Realistically, there was no way to transfer this magic to the screen, but it was attempted anyway, and what we are left with is the charm of the material. Any musical based on a Charles Dickens novel is heading in the right direction from the start. Add to the equation the beautiful music of Alan Menken (Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, Pocahontas and even Little Shop of Horrors!) and the perfectly poignant lyrics by Lyn Ahrens (Ragtime, Seussical, Once on this Island and A Man of No Importance) and the material is sure to stand up... and it does. However, that was in 1995.
In later years the authors continued to make rather bizarre changes to the score that, essentially were exceedingly inferior to their counterpart songs. The best example would be replacing the beautifully dark opening song "The Years are Passing By" from the original stage version with the totally lame "Jolly Good Time". This was apparently done in an effort to make the show less daunting for kids, but this is Charles Dickens and therefor in doing so you are destroying the very foundation of your source material. Some of the revisions, however, are very nice indeed like the inclusion of the new song "You Mean More to Me" which is just pure heaven. Unfortunately the script presented for this television version was the revised script from the later versions of the show and not the one from 1995. So the material does not hold up quite as strong. Thankfully, we have an all-star cast to pull the focus away from that and they succeed. Kelsey Grammer is a serviceable Scrooge and the ensemble of Broadway veterans lead us through a nightmare tale that will ultimately put you in the Christmas spirit, and that, if anything, could have been Dicken's intentions all along. If you can find it, definitely pick up the 1995 original cast recording of A CHRISTMAS CAROL, but for the visuals, this DVD will do just fine.

(More customer reviews)Every time I go to NYC for the holidays, I make a point to see this show. A fabulous New York City fix; a fabulous Christmas tradition. And they get to wrap it up in one of the most beautiful art deco buildings in the world. This was the 75th anniversary production. Most of the old favorite numbers were included and many spetacular new pieces (my favorite being the double decker bus ride through Manhattan). I was actually in the audience the night this was taped and I was very pleased to see considerably more footage of the show than was televised on network TV and, as I remember, in the correct order it appeared in the program. This DVD will go into the stack of my holiday memories to watch again and again. I

Jack Frost (Remastered Deluxe Edition) (2008) Review

And the great voice actor Paul Frees (best known as the voice of Boris Badenov in "The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle") does an amazing job as the voice of the villain, Kubla Kraus. Don't miss him singing the "Rub-a-Dub" song! (Which is usually cut from TV broadcasts of this film.) "Jack Frost" is another extraordinary film by Romeo Muller, who also wrote the classic Animagic, Rankin/Bass Christmas films, "Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer" and "Frosty the Snowman," among many other enchanting tales.

(More customer reviews)Upon ordering this 3 disc collection I wasn't really sure what to expect but am plesantly surprised to say the least. I have always adored anything with a Christmas theme and this set doesn't disappoint in the least.
Total content on these 3 discs are 13 hours and 35 minutes.
Disc 1 contains 11 classic television Christmas episodes: The Beverly Hillillies - Turkey Day, Christmas at the Clampets & Home for Christmas.
The Burns and Allen Show - Gracie and Relatives
The Jack Benny Show - Christmas Shopping (Note: Mel Blanc, the voice of Bugs Bunny and numerous others cartoon characters, appears in this one)and New Year's Eve

(More customer reviews)Perhaps the most endearing of all the Charlie Brown specials is "A Charlie Brown Christmas", the first in a long series of made for t.v. half hour films portraying the famous Peanuts Gang.
For almost forty years, watching "A Charlie Brown Christmas" has been an eagerly anticipated event for millions of households. I recall watching it as far back as twenty-two years ago, and have watched it every Christmas since.
"A Charlie Brown Christmas" was made in a time when commercialism was running rampant all over the country. Stores advertising to shoppers what they ought to buy, long before Thanksgiving had come and gone. Unfortunately, we still see this blatant commercialism today, which makes this short film so very poignant and all the more special.
Charlie Brown is assigned to direct the school Christmas pageant, much to his glee; for he feels accepted and worthy. When Lucy tells him to go out and get an alumminum tree, he takes Linus along with him. What Charlie Brown ultimately gets is a small, sickly looking tree, which is rapidly loosing its needles. But, Charlie can see how much the tree "needs him", somebody; something which he can identity with.
When he returns, he finds the gang dancing to un-Christmas like music, instead of rehearsing their lines. They stop to take a look at the tree he brought, immediately burtsing out in mocking laughter. Apparently Charlie Brown has failed again. In disgust and humiliation he flees, taking the tree with him. And when he comes upon Snoopy's dog house, all decked out in Christmas lights, not to celebrate the joyous holiday, but to win money in a contest, Charlie Brown has had enough, and almost loses all faith in Christmas.
Linus saves the day, somehow able to bring the tree back to life, and make it look much healthier and stronger. But it is when he explains the meaning of Christmas that the "gang" gets the point of Christmas, and what Charlie Brown was trying to do.
"A Charlie Brown Christmas" ends with newfound meaning for Christmas, hopefully not soon forgotten by either the Peanuts Gang, or, more importantly ... us.

Holiday Family Collection (2008) Review

(More customer reviews)This "FAMILY HOLIDAY COLLECTION" with 12 Holiday Movies (from 1935 - 1964), 49 Holiday TV Episodes (1950's and 60's) and 27 Christmas Cartoons (1940's - 1960's) is a very nice mix of seasonal Favorites of yesteryear. 8 DVD's and over 40 hours of Holiday entertainment!
NOTE: Most is in Black and White format, direct VHS transfers, ALL 4:3 aspect ratio (Standard) and some are grainy with some audio inferiority. But for the most part a very enjoyable and entertaining mix for the holiday's.
My favorites and suggested viewing for the movies: Beyond Tomorrow (1940) a very nice story about 3 old rich gentlemen who take in a young forlorn couple during the holidays (with a nice twist). The Miracle on 34th Street (1955 made for television) not as good as the 1947 version with Natalie Wood but still a fun story. And Scrooge (1935) a rare English version nice touch (a little grainy but a treat to experience).
My favorite Cartoons were The First Christmas, Howdy Doody Christmas, Jingle Bells, and Rudolph, the Red Nose Reindeer.
My favorite Tv episodes were many; All 5 of the "Ozzie and Harriet", Racquet Squad (the Christmas caper), Charles Dicken's The Christmas Carol with Vincent Price as the narrator, The RUGGLES (Christmas Eve 1952) and the A Child is Born. Also there is a BONUS virtual fireplace sequence too!! (very clear with crackling burning logs in COLOR)
Just sit back and enjoy some really memorable Christmas / Holiday fun!! I recommend this Collection for any family there something here for everyone!!!! Enjoy.
