Playboy - Playmates on the Catwalk (2000) Review

(More customer reviews)Playboy didn't disappoint me this time. After their recent releases being so bad, I ordered this DVD thinking it would be bad, but hoping for a miracle. The video s***ed! It was a complete waste of money.
The video states that it is a fashion show with around twenty eight or twenty nine playmates. While this is true, most of the playmates you see for only seconds. Literally only a few seconds. The video shows clips of the playmates walking up and down the fashion runway. Most of them look more like whores, than the beautiful woman that they truly are. They are wearing so much eye make up that they look really trashy.
The DVD contains about twenty or so segments and the main feature is only 48 minutes long. If you do the math, you can see that each segment is only about two minutes in length. The segments show the fashion designer, Betsey Johnson, meeting the playmates, talking about the costumes designed for the playmates, and various other segments of her views on fashion. I have never heard or seen Betsey Johnson, but trust me, she isn't very pleasant to look at.
There are a few very short segments included in the DVD featuring interviews and nudity of the various playmates. Much of the nudity that is shown are old clips from the playmate's video clip. The new stuff is just the girls talking about how great it is to be in a fashion show. Some of the nudity is new, but it is mainly just the girls flashing in front of the camera. Very tame flashing.
If you would enjoy seeing the playmates dressed up like a bunch of sluts, and see very little nudity, I recommend this video to you. Otherwise, pass on the purchase of this video.

Stranger Inside (2001) Review

(More customer reviews)What makes this movie a standout is that it all seems real. This is no backlot prison stage with sqeaky clean actors trying to play real grit. This is truly a down and dirty portrayal of women's prison life. But despite the often disturbing depiction of this (the unabashed violence; and one scene with a prison guard and a speculum), that's not really what this movie is about. It delves deeper into one young woman's dream/fantasy of recapturing the archetypal missing mother and chronicles her transformation from a girl who knows what she wants (to find her mother, Brownie, who is locked up in the federal pen) to a young woman whose self-discovery becomes her ultimate grief.
The movie is filled with outstanding performances (Rain Phoenix, for one is phenomenal), good pacing and production,and good storytelling. It falls short because I believe it does perpetuate some stereotypes many may have about women's prisons and at times, doesn't seem to be able to move beyond these familiar, formulaic images. I would have liked to have seen something I haven't seen in prison movies before.
The DVD has chapter selection capability and is presented in widescreen format. However, if you are looking for special features, this is about it. I would have liked to have seen a "behind the camera" featurette or a director's commentary on this disc. Cheryl Dunye is a talented, talented director and not to have heard directly from her about this movie is a shortcoming.
I recommend this movie very highly. It's not one you'll want to watch over and over so before you buy, consider renting it first. This movie is like a fine meal, it's good the first time around but you wouldn't want to eat this way every night.

Soldier's Girl (2003) Review

(More customer reviews)I saw this movie the same day that I saw Million Dollar Baby (the boxing film starring Hillary Swank and Clint Eastwood), and at the end all I could think was - is this how I wanted to spend Christmas Eve? Crying?
Well, it was worth it.
Barry's story is well known, so I'll skip a retelling. Although I never fully understood Barry's interest in Calpernia, only because the movie didn't make any attempts to delve into the "why" of his attraction to her, I found myself moved by their love, and Barry's fierce determination to keep his private life (Calpernia) private.
What a shame that he shared barracks with such a horrendous and sick person (Justin). I know some people in the armed forces that are gay (but don't ask me who, because I won't tell ), and they are well accepted by their ... I don't know the technical terms here...comrades in arms. How's that. A pity that Barry didn't get stuck with a person whose problem was certainly far worse than OCD.
Anyway. What I found particularly moving, and what has caused me to watch the movie again, were the special features on the CD. Usually the special features are interesting for ancillary purposes. But these were different. First, I was surprised to find that Calpernia's [...] weren't real. I had been rather convinced that a real transgender was playing her role. Instead, it was a male, with a rather flat chest, so his performance was even more interesting. That's one of the main reasons I want to watch the film again.
Calpernia Adams herself appeared in the Special Features, and I was so surprised. I don't have a tremendous amount of experience with transgenders, but did not expect her to be so much like a lady. NOT a gay man acting like a lady, but a real lady. Her comments on Barry were pointed and poignant. Also, she did have her final operation, and is working now in L.A.
The other appearance of note in the Special Features was that of Barry's mother herself. We learned a little more about Barry than in the film. When he first went to Visions, his "buddies" were taking him there to get his mind off his breakup with his girlfriend of four years. She wondered if Barry was actually gay, but said that it didn't matter. What mattered is that what happened to him was a terrible crime, one of bigotry and hate, and so she and her husband have taken it upon themselves to speak when and wherever they can to combat closed minds. Good for them.
There were only two things that angered me. One, the person that killed Barry will be eligible for parole in less than thirteen years. The manner in which he killed Barry should have garnered him life imprisonment without the possibility of parole - at best. Also, the instigator of his death, Justin, is up for parole very soon. If not for his pressuring, the little idiot (Glover?) that killed Barry probably wouldn't have done it. If the movie showed that scene correctly, as it actually happened, then Justin is just as responsible for Barry's death as Glover, and should be in prison for a very long time.
*Added 9/29/06 - According to the October 10th, 2006 issue of The Advocate, "Justin Fisher...was [released] to a halfway house [last month]. Fisher will be out of custody entirely October 24."
He didn't spend nearly enough time for this crime. How horribly, horribly sad.

(More customer reviews)What can I really say? Eight incredibly sexy Latina beauties get the opportunity to strip and to strut their stuff--albeit in a more softcore manner. There are no hardcore sexual situations, but who cares? I knew precisely what I was purchasing.
Much like the content, the music score is awesome, providing us with a variety of different genres rather than the nonchalant elevator fare that is practically common of any softcore film.
Excessive drooling may also occur on the viewer's part, so take the necessary precautions and grab that Kleenex box (and popcorn, beer, et cetera.) before you watch. If you are a die-hard fan of Latina beauties, then this is the most reasonably priced DVD for YOU.

Russian Dolls (2004) Review

(More customer reviews)Cedric Klapisch's 2005 film LES POUPEES RUSSES is a sequel to his effort of three years before, L'AUBERGE ESPAGNOLE ("The Spanish Apartment"). It's a very different sort of story. While the first film centered on the zany camaraderie that developed between several European students in Barcelona, LES POUPEES RUSSES focuses on the lovelives of a selected few characters, though Klapisch does briefly reunite the cast of the Spanish apartment. This review assumes that the reader has already seen L'AUBERGE ESPAGNOLE, a fine film I do recommend.
As LES POUPEES RUSSES opens, Xavier is now thirty, making his living in Paris ghostwriting celebrity autobiographies and scripting soap operas, while the manuscript of his Barcelona novel languishes in neglect. He has gone through numerous relationships since his return from Spain, and wallows in self-pity with Isabelle and Martine, both still alone as well. After an exposition on the misery of these characters, the main plot is set into motion by two events. One is Xavier's commute to London to work on a script with Wendy, now a writer herself. The other is William's engagement to a Russian dancer and move to Saint Petersburg, where he invites all his friends for the wedding. Though I shall avoid spoilers here, I can say that it is through his involvement in these goings-on that Xavier finally finds the stability he was looking for.
Lars, Tobias, Soledad, and Alessando only appear in the Saint Petersburg scenes, and are granted only a few lines each. Though it is rather curious that these characters were brought for probably the most expensive filming in spite of their peripheral roles, the viewer feels no outrage that they get so little screen time. At this point, one's sympathy is entirely with Xavier, Wendy, and William and his Russian bride, and so seeing some of the faces from L'AUBERGE ESPAGNOLE adds only a nice highlight on the years that have gone by.
For this reviewer, intrigued by the references to the building of a united Europe in L'AUBERGE ESPAGNOLE, the comments on society and politics in this film were powerful as well. If LES POUPEES RUSSES does not overtly speak of Europe's future, as in the first film when the students question the place of Catalan, the story is nonetheless based on growing changes in European youth. One is increased mobility. That a bunch of old friends from Spain can reunite in Saint Petersburg is a plausible development speaks much of how much young people travel now. Another is multilingualism, dialogues in LES POUPEES RUSSES are in English, French, Spanish, or Russian (with subtitles where necessary). And through the involvement of William's engagement to a Russian, the film shows that European integration goes beyond the borders of merely the EU.
But LES POUPEES RUSSES is also a beautiful love story. I was never content with the other portion of the plot of the first film, where alongside European changes we viewed the story of a young man finding himself. In Barcelona, the twenty-five year-old Xavier was acting like someone several years younger and some of the twists were silly. Here, however, the relationship between Xavier and the women he meets is entirely convincing, and the ending is one of the most satisfying and heartwarming I know of in film.
This reviewer finds himself at around the same point in life as Xavier, and resides in Europe with a similar multilingual and mobile lifestyle. Perhaps that is why the film is so touching for me, but I regrettably can't say what younger viewers in the United States might think of the film. Still, anyone is sure to finds LES POUPEES RUSSES a well-made and entertaining production.

If These Walls Could Talk 2 (2000) Review

(More customer reviews)"If These Walls Could Talk 2" is one of the best, if not the best, film that touched on so many important issues that effect the every day lives of lesbians each and every day. Each episode was so well written, cast, acted and directed that I never tire of watching the film again and again. The first episode with Vanessa Redgrave was so heartwrenching to those of us in the gay community who know how few rights we have under the laws that are inherent to the heterosexual community. Yet by the same token it sent such an important message to the heterosexual community of the basic human and legal rights that gays are denied by not being allowed to marry. Not having grown up in the 60's, the second episode was eye opening to me from a generational standpoint, yet no matter what the era, the message about stereotyping and exclusion was provocative and it was a reminder to us to be accepting, rather than exclusionary, even within our own gay community. The third episode with Ellen DeGeneres and Sharon Stone was outstanding. The dialog was funny and poignant, the acting was superb, the directing was well done and the message came through loud and clear. Love and families know no boundaries of race, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, generation, etc. As long as people love and care for each other as human beings, eventually the ugliness, hatred, bias, bigotry and discrimination don't matter quite so much. They can all be overcome and we all have the capacity for acceptance and change. It just doesn't get any better than that. And while many of our goals are a long way off and we have many battles to fight, films like "If These Walls Could Talk 2" and the courageous people who make and broadcast them help to bridge that chasm of misunderstanding and bring us all a little closer together as a society.

Since then, this off-Broadway one-person play has since been featured in many parts of the world. Her words give women the power to be more open about their vaginas, an organ that some unfortunately call taboo to express. This fearless performer offers humor, wit, and serious to certain issues, all in the correct areas. She gives new meaning to issues beyond the vagina with more than just her words. Her vocal expressions empower them tremendously. She also expresses great pride to the female orgasm, masturbation, lesbianism, and reclaiming certain offensive words. Amazingly, she performs the entire piece sitting down. Most performers don't do that.
Each individual monologue tells its individual story beautifully and expressively. The featured interviews give multiple perspectives to each issue. Whether they are humorous (looking "down there", sex, orgasmic sounds) or touching (rape, witnessing birth), all have the empowering impact that forces audiences to look beyond themselves. Therefore, "The Vagina Monologues" is recommended for everyone. Though nothing beats the live experience, this DVD recollects this piece beautifully. This will surely be an unforgettable and educating experience for many.

(More customer reviews)This movie is fantastic. You don't really realize how great it is until after its over though. It is a great story. A Catholic Boarding School teacher falls in love with her female student. That's right, it is about lesbians and homosexuality. However, if you are just looking for "lesbian action" don't waste your time with this, its not a sex movie. If on the other hand, you are mature enough to handle such a plot, you'll love it. So after an hour of the student pursuing the teacher and the teacher being wary and afraid to be with her.....well I can't tell you how it ends. What I will say, though, is why it is so great. It does not openly debate, discuss, or point out anything about homosexuality being right, wrong, good, or evil. What it instead does is tell a wonderful tale of romantic, yet forbidden pursuit, and no matter what your stance is on homosexuality in general, you cannot help but hope for a happy ending, and get wrapped up in this love drama. After the movie is over, you think of how bittersweet the story is and poor this and at least that and then it hits you - You have been focusing on love, passion, heartache, and beauty....but NOT about Straight or Gay relationships. That's the beauty of this film. It captures you into a world of pure love drama and you forget that it is about a controversial subject at all. Regardless of your stance in this controversy, all you can focus on while watching is a love story between two human beings. Watch it, you'll love it.

Lots of Laughter this season which I Love! and much more Tibette's Love this season as well! I can't wait to own this DVD! Most importantly, can't wait for the new season, which sadly would be the Last one. I don't know what I'd do when the show ended, although there will be a spin-off, but still don't know which character. Love the L word! :)

While the Second Season does not stand up quite as well upon repeat viewings as the first, it is still utterly delightful. Playboy - Barefoot Beauties (2002) Review

(More customer reviews)If you're a true foot/leg fan and you enjoyed the printed Barefoot Beauties photo books you'll be very disapointed by this DVD. The girls are beautiful and most have very attractive feet/toes, but the scenes are 80% ..., faces & torsos.
Amazingly in many scenes during a closeup they cut the off half the foot or entirely from the ankle down. Many scenes they do a long pan down the leg and as soon as they get to the foot they do a quick blur past it.
It's obvious they didn't shoot the scenes specifically for this title, but rather rounded up existing footage that showed a little more leg/feet/toes than normal (which for Playboy is minimal anyway). I've seen more feet/toes in their regular videos like the first Girlfriends.
Playboy had a great opportunity here but they only understand their mainstream market. They've always had trouble with niche and fetish fans.

"The thing you need to know is, it's all about sex."
That's the first line of dialogue, spoken in voiceover at the beginning of "Queer as Folk", a sprawling, impressively realized drama about the lives of several working-class gay men living in Pittsburgh at the turn of the 21st century. And, indeed, this 22-episode series - based on the British original which ran for eight episodes in 1999 before spawning a brief sequel the following year - presents a visual celebration of gay sex in all its forms, launching headfirst into NC-17 territory with unapologetic abandon. Some parts are raunchy and liberating, while others are soulless and ugly, yet the script never preaches or condemns, merely observes without judgment.
Using the narrative template established by writer Russell T. Davies in the UK version, many of QAF's initial episodes will be familiar to anyone who's already seen the original - same characters and situations, same dramatic arc - but it eventually finds its own feet, employing a defiantly American approach in terms of mood and execution, whilst remaining true to the spirit of Davies' initial concept. As might be expected, the show touches on a variety of pressing social issues including HIV and AIDS, homophobia and ex-gay ministries, whilst also confronting some ugly home truths, most notably the casual (and not-so-casual) drug use which enhances some people's lives whilst ruining others. This is ambitious, warts-and-all stuff, portrayed with integrity and passion.
Much of the show's success is due principally to the casting of Gale Harold, making a staggeringly assured screen debut as ultra-sexy Brian Kinney, an elemental force of nature whose actions and reactions inform the lives of virtually every other character in the show. A sexual predator by nature, his cold-hearted vanity and selfish bravado may seem a little obnoxious at first, but this incredibly complex character - terrified of growing older and turning into his overbearing father - is eventually exposed as a decent, loving man whose withering cynicism ("There's only two kinds of straight people in this world - the ones that hate you to your face, and the ones that hate you behind your back") masks a soul in crisis. How appropriate that the first season should end on a closeup of his beautiful face, the mask completely (albeit forcibly) removed.
Other stand-outs in an exceptional cast include comedian Hal Sparks as Brian's lovable best friend Michael, the indomitable Sharon ("I love my gay son!") Gless as Sparks' over-the-top mom Debbie, and Michelle Clunie as Melanie, a no-nonsense lawyer whose hostility towards Brian allows plenty of room for dramatic conflict (Clunie and Thea Gill play a loving couple whose lives are central to the proceedings, unlike the British original where the female characters seemed almost surplus to requirements). Scott Lowell (Ted) and Peter Paige (Emmett) complete the core group, which is bolstered by the arrival of 17 year old Justin (played by the astonishingly young-looking 23 year old, Randy Harrison), coming out of the closet with a vengeance while his worried mom (Sherry Miller) hovers on the sidelines, maintaining an anxious vigil. Along with Gale Harold, Harrison is involved in some of the show's most graphic sex scenes, and both actors display a level of bravery and commitment that goes way beyond the call of duty. Hats off to both of them.
Look out for a wealth of memorable scenes and set-pieces, such as the hilarious whirlwind romance between Emmett and his 'soulmate' which crams a lifetime of gay cliches into a two-hour relationship (!); Brian coming out to his father (a powerful cameo by experienced character actor Lawrence Dane); Melanie's reaction to a bigoted nurse during a moment of crisis; Debbie's jaw-dropping description of Brie cheese (!); and Justin becoming, shall we say, REALLY acquainted with handsome young football jock Chris Hobbs (a small but hugely significant role, played by Alec McClure) in the school's athletic room... All gay life is here, as the old saying goes.
To the accompaniment of a thumping musical soundtrack, the season culminates in a deeply moving season finale (directed by Alex Chapple), which contains the show's most outstanding scene of all, a glorious, life-affirming sequence in which most of Justin's hopes and dreams are realized at the school prom, set to the haunting, melancholy strains of Ben E. King's classic, 'Save the Last Dance for Me'. Which, of course, leaves us totally unprepared for the devastation that follows...
Afterwards, during the show's closing moments, the audience is abruptly reminded of the fragile humanity which underpins these extraordinary characters, and how much they've captured our hearts. In the end, as raunchy as it is, the show isn't really about sex at all - it's about PEOPLE, and the way our lives are defined by our relationships with family and loved ones. This episode, more than any other, amounts to a near-perfect combination of music, character development and dramatic action, and is without question the most heartbreaking hour of television this reviewer has ever seen.
Though prompted by its excellent British counterpart, the US version of QAF is arguably one of the most significant events in the history of gay film and television in America because, crucially, it's financed and exhibited from within the mainstream arena. It isn't low-budget and marginalized - it's empowering, intelligent and uproariously funny, and it's in-your-face like nothing you've ever seen on TV before. After this, the representation of gay people in American art can never be the same again, because QAF has set the standard against which all future offerings must surely be measured. Absolutely magnificent.

The L Word: Season Two (2004) Review

(More customer reviews)Don't be fooled by the theme of this show: The L Word is so much more than some throw-away gay show. The themes are universal and should resonate with more than gay viewers.
S2 lived up to its promise from the producers. In comparison to S1 (which was quite good), S2 provided much better storytelling and Ilene Chaiken and her production staff have become much better film makers. This show is a very adult drama. One example, the Bette and Tina (Jennifer Beals and Laurel Holloman: fiery chemistry) saga remind one of Bergman's "Scene's From A Marriage" as this couple struggles with issues of sexual inertia, miscarriage, infedility, the loss of self to a seductively potent and sometimes dismissive partner, wanting sexual intimacy with your partner while your partner is seemingly disinterested.
The themes dramatized are universal: in addition to those already mentioned, these include the fear of disaffection of a loved parent (Bette's father, Melvin: performed by Ossie Davis who was nominated for an Emmy for his brilliant turn as Melvin), the loss of a loved parent (Melvin), the lost soul (Shane) who craves love but thinks being in love will destroy her, the best in class girl (Dana) whose parents love her and who is their "golden girl" in all but her private life, the woman who miscarried (Tina) and wanted nothing but to conceive of a child with her partner, the woman (Tina) whose partner desired another woman and who got back some of her sexual self-esteem and broken ego in the arms of another (Helena), the woman (Alice) who fell in love with her best friend, the scared and troubled woman (Jenny) who is trying to remember a traumatic childhood event and is spirilling toward a mushroom cloud of self-destruction, the down to earth and earthy woman (Carmen) who lives her life as she pleases while looking for someone to love and be loved in return.
All of these stories are told with honesty and passion. The storytelling is not the familiar fare one (especially Americans) are used to in their couch potato universe. You need to pay attention when viewing this series for it is not spoon fed to the viewer as are so many series.
Some viewers (the most vocal but who, imho, represent only a minority of viewers) have expressed disdain over the music of EZ-girl. I am not one of those viewers.
While I don't applaud everything this composer has produced for this show in S2, she is not without talent. In fact, Betty is a very fun band to see in person.
EZ-girl just needs a bit of managing. (Her website has served as the red cape to some viewers. She is an in-your-face person and does little to assuage the ridicule and hatred of some viewers. It seems the more vocal the minority is about their hatred the more she may be increasing the volume of her in-your-face fare. She is not that different from other artists in this vein like Emminem, etc.)
IMHO, a few scores of the background music she produced for S2 do not lend themself to the overall benefit of the production. However, (and this is where her talent comes to the fore) her background music was pristene for other scenes. Several come to mind: Tina alone and very pregnant in Dr. Wilson's office; Alice and Shane talking about Tina on their way to the Planet; Tina and Alice walking to Tina's Lawyer's spare guest house; Bette drunk; Bette with hangover; Tina and Helena making love in the pool; Melvin's sick and death scenes (truly haunting scoring, imho). There are more but those are just a few of the ones that come to mind.
Indeed it is a mixed bag. But, it is no where near as bad as some of her harshest critics passionately avow. As I said, her talent needs to be directed and the scores I mentioned in the last paragraph that showcase her talent and strength as a composer needs to be cultivated and encouraged by the producers. I am not unhappy that she will be coming back for S3. My only wish is that her talent is as focused (and directed by the producers) as it was in the scoring scenes I mentioned.
The few things that didn't work for me in S2 were a couple of the Shane and Carmen scenes and the Gloria Steinem scene in the finale (which was preachy and out of place: talking about feminism when they should have been telling stories about Melvin, Bette's father, which brought them together in the first place).
The few Ez-girl missteps, a couple of the Shane and Carmen love scenes and the Steinem scene in the finale are the reasons I am giving S2 a 4 but a solid one.
I already pre-ordered S2.
This show is groundbreaking. I have never seen on my TV some of the scenes shown on this show. For example, a very pregnant Tina making love. Some people have been turned off by this for various reasons and others have rejoiced in its depiction. I fall in the latter category.
I have been a subscriber to Vanity Fair for over 15 years. I remember the scandal that was caused when Demi Moore posed pregnant on the cover. That issue was mailed to me (and every other subscriber) in a brown paper cover so as not to offend. Imagine that. A pregnant woman not doing anything but being pregnant in full beautiful bloom on the cover of a major American magazine: but it was considered by some to be disgusting and pornography. It was nothing of the sort.
So, for those of us who have been pregnant whether or not we are gay, Moore's pregnant cover girl and Holloman's very real life pregnancy played out in Tina's character (who was not ashamed of her body or of her sexual needs and desires) was glorious and very much welcomed and celebrated in my household and among my partner and my circle of friends (straight and gay).
So, brava to Ilene Chaiken and the people behind this show. Overall, wonderful writing, directing, acting and production values.
Of course, every show on TV can be improved upon and TLW is no exception. If a show has nothing to shoot for then why continue on with the show. There are so many stories left to tell and I for one am looking forward to S3.
I recommend this show and the DVD without hesitation.

The focus is first and formost about women and the lives of women. There is love, loss, drama, and all that goes in between. It makes you laugh at times and cry at others, but life is not a fairytale and this show doesn't make it to be... that is what makes it so great. There a femmes and butches, a ton who are somewhere in the middle. It makes you reconsider the labels you place on people and realize there are all shades of gray. Whether you are a stay at home parent, trying to become a parent, happy in love, breaking up, sleeping around, or transitioning... from bed to bed or from female to male, you can see yourself in this show.
Some have been critical of Ilene Chaiken (not Irene as the misguided poster at top called her) claiming that the show isn't realisitc or that the writing is bad. We should remember that this show is about a group of lesbians, not all the lesbians in the world. It could be people we know but it might not be. To claim a show unrealistic because it isn't a story of your own life is to also say that every representation of every woman is only real if that woman goes through what you go through, that every reprentation of whatever race you are is only real if that person goes through what you go through, and given the wide variety of diversity in programming any reasonable person knows that to be untrue. So, no The L Word doesn't represent every lesbian on the planet but it does give a good account for a select group of us out there, it does venture to bring visibility to those of us who went unseen before, it gives us a voice, and it shows people that lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgered people love and hurt and face things in our life good and bad just like everyone else.
There is no other show out there that has done for lesbians what The L Word has. Seasoned actresses like Jennifer Beals and Pam Grier bring the show up a few levels, Jennifer Beals and Laurel Holloman have chemistry that is palpable... even when their characters are fighting they have tremendous chemistry. Rachel Shelley, Katherine Moening, Alexandra Hedison all have sex appeal through the roof in their representation of single lesbians on the show. Leisha does comedy like no one's business and she also had some amazing dramatic scenes. Erin Daniels was wickedly funny as well and broke our hearts with the huge part her character had in season 3. Daniella Sea is a new comer and she still has great strides to take. I wouldn't dare say she was the star as that would be a huge over-statment... she was far from it, but her character was like nothing we've ever seen before. Daniella took on her role like a champ and I was very excited to see her added to the cast, she is bringing visibility to an entire other part of the audience that had yet to be shown and in time I think she will be as comfortable as the other actresses. I certainly look foward to more from Max.
Also, despite what the initial reviewer had to say, I don't think there is any grounds for statements suggesting Ilene degraded, down played, or disrespected Danielle, the actress, or her character Moira/Max. If an actress is cast after promotions start then you cannot expect them to appear in all the promotional photos. Although Daniella wasn't in all the season 3 promotional photos she was in some of them, she is in those for Season 4 and she also did a great deal of in person promotions with Ilene to promote season 3. If Ilene wanted to down play and degrade Daniella she would not have made her the main guest star for most of the promotional events, she also would not have been so super secretive and hyped about Daniella's character on the show. There would be no transgendered character, or any butch type characters, or any kind of character we are fortunate to have on the show if Ilene was as horrible as this reviewer has made her out to be. Max and The L Word at large exists because of Ilene not in spite of her.
The one criticsim I have with the dvd itself and not the show... the dvd extras were lacking in any kind of special or additional footage that many fans like to see. There are no bloopers, no special interviews, nothing truly exciting to look foward to.
This is a great show. I definitely recommend it as a buy!!!

I ordered the first season thinking mostly about the possible sex and nude scenes I would find, as explicit porn is not exactly allowed where I am. I found what I wanted, but what I really didn't expect was how into the show I would get. I really find this show to be one of the best written and intriguing shows that I've come across. I give the show 5 stars for its evenly mixed comedy, romance, and drama. I also think that this show shines light for acceptance of the gay/lesbian lifestyle and helps others understand that yes homosexual's are actually people as well. I have already watched the 2nd and 3rd season and have pre-ordered the 4th. I think that this show is awesome and is well worth the money to watch it. I also really enjoyed the beginnings of each episode with a something that happened in the past that directly relates to the episode. Also I love the chart and how it shows how everyone is connected. I'm a big fan of Jewel and I think it reflects the "Pieces of You" song extremely well; and how your actions can affect the people around you. Again awesome show and I would recommend it to anyone from all walks of life.
