Naked World (2003) Review

(More customer reviews)I got Naked States years ago so I decided to get this one as well. I'm not sure which I like best (it's been so long since I watched "States") but this one was interesting. The video work was generally well done, Tunick might even give a better impression of himself this time around and sometimes it even looked 'arty'.
I don't remember much about the gallery extra but the New York/Grand Central bit had a somewhat disorganized look to it (maybe all photo shoots are like that), and appeared to consist entirely of hundreds of women. The resulting pictures didn't look like art to me, or pornography, but the women seemed to really enjoy themselves- not much sign of nervousness.
In all of the countries shown,in some of which only a few people posed, it seemed to be a common thread that people would be a little nervous but also excited and enjoying themselves- that might be the best part of this program (the joy of the occaision).
Some pictures come out more artful than others but this is a good video for what art does come through and for the look on people's faces as they nervously have a good time. I don't regret getting it.

Over the course of one year, all seven continents (including Antarctica - BRRRRR!) and nine countries (Canada, France, Great Britain, Ireland, Russia, Australia, Japan, South Africa and Brazil), Tunick and his crew map out an ambitious agenda that says as much about the cultures he encounters as it does about the subjects and landmarks he photographs. The film questions what nakedness means to people in different countries and climates, both geographic and political, and underscores just how volatile the debate about nudity as a legitimate art form can be.

(More customer reviews)Antony Thomas' Middle Sexes explores diversity within sexuality that makes all people unique. Focusing on transgender issues accross society that film helps to create the feeling that diversity is good and that one of the keys to peaceful coexistence is tolerance for all views.
The film's most powerful message is that there is no one real normal definition of human sexuality. All life is neither black nor white, male nor female. Everything and everyone is made up of shades of gray.
The film makes its point by intoducing the viewer to other cultures where the idea of transgender roles are more accepted than in our own. We travel to India to learn about the Hindu third sex and to Thailand to get the insights of the Ladyboy community.
This is a quite good documentary produced by Sheila Nevins for HBO. While it offers no stunning conclusions its message of diversity and tolerance is well appreciated.

(More customer reviews)I am a physician in the Army and have worked in this facility during OIF. This film is graphic but nowhere near as graphic as it could be. It is quite uplifting and moving. It is also very tastefully done and not in the least exploitative considering the subject matter. It made me very proud of the job we do. It should be seen by everyone.

Since then, this off-Broadway one-person play has since been featured in many parts of the world. Her words give women the power to be more open about their vaginas, an organ that some unfortunately call taboo to express. This fearless performer offers humor, wit, and serious to certain issues, all in the correct areas. She gives new meaning to issues beyond the vagina with more than just her words. Her vocal expressions empower them tremendously. She also expresses great pride to the female orgasm, masturbation, lesbianism, and reclaiming certain offensive words. Amazingly, she performs the entire piece sitting down. Most performers don't do that.
Each individual monologue tells its individual story beautifully and expressively. The featured interviews give multiple perspectives to each issue. Whether they are humorous (looking "down there", sex, orgasmic sounds) or touching (rape, witnessing birth), all have the empowering impact that forces audiences to look beyond themselves. Therefore, "The Vagina Monologues" is recommended for everyone. Though nothing beats the live experience, this DVD recollects this piece beautifully. This will surely be an unforgettable and educating experience for many.

Dare to Dream: The Story of the U.S. Women's Soccer Team (2005) Review

(More customer reviews)Last year, I began coaching my daughter's U-8 team. The girls knew nothing about the glories of the USWNT. I told them about Mia Hamm and got them to read a brief bio on her, but this HBO documentary was the best teaching tool ever.
It is a great story that uses the retirement game for Hamm, Fawcett and Foudy to lok back at the history of the WNT from the first WC in 1991 through the 2004 Olympics.
This movie can't help but increase the self esteem of any young girl just starting the sport to see how good the Americans can be at soccer. Because the Men's World Cup gets more publicity, my girls all thought that Americans just weren't very good at soccer and that it was dominated by a half dozen European and So. American countries. This video points out that historically the US WNT is the best. It really got my daughter interested in the current WNT and we even went to see a game in San Jose last month.
The release is being timed to come just after the beginning of this year's Women's World Cup in China. (The first game for the US team, who are #1 ranked again, is Sept. 11th.
HBO is also selling it directly through their website, but for $5 more.

(More customer reviews)This History lesson by Mr. Wuhl is not only the funniest commentary on video I have ever seen, it is eyeopening in it's review of historical events we take for granted. Mr. Wuhl is well schooled in literature, history, and film, and he uses this expertise to illuminate American and world history in a most entertaining manner. As noted previously, Nr. Wuhl peppers his lesson with the occasional f-bomb, so it is definitely not elememtary school rated. His audience in the video is college students, and they are totally enthralled. Mr. Wuhl has a sequel "Assume the Position 201" that is equally well done. We can only hope he continues his career as a History professor. What a great semester class that would be.

(More customer reviews)This is the best reality show ever made, in my opinion. It is a truly fascinating show. Be warned- this is as graphic as it gets on cable TV. This show is the graphic account of a brothel, showing every step from admission to orgasm with the girl and the john. It's kind of like a legit version of 'Hookers on the Point', another great HBO show.
The characters are very engrossing, and each episode moves along at a quick pace with a distinct theme/topic. They interview enough people and cut it down so each episode has very little down time.
If you're even mildly interested in this, I recommend it. It's a really interesting story about a guy (Dennis Hoff, the owner/manager) and his business. For all the other things going on, he is a business man, and a very good one.5 of 5 stars
