This is almost FIVE HOURS of the Wonder Pets. We will be able to go from Houston to Dallas on one set of DVDs. There are 3 in this set. Fortunately, I like the Wonder Pets. I like the singing and I love, "This is se-wious!" The first song my grandson ever sang was the one about teamwork. His father is going to be so sorry I found this! Bwahaha!

Sharpe's Sword (2006) Review

Sharpe's Sword (2006)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
One of my favorite Sharpe books and definitely one of the better adaptations, even though the action is transferred from Salamanca to the ficitious(?) Villafranca and the romantic subplot involving a novice nun is best forgotten. Sharpe is assigned the task of tracking down Colonel Leroux, who is after Wellington's chief spy, El Mirador - a task complicated by the fact that Sharpe isn't even told who El Mirador is. Sharpe must also contend with an old enemy returned and a traitor to be uncovered, even as he is gravely wounded during the assault on Villafranca, and hovers between life and death...
Sharpe's Sword is great from beginning to end - never skipping a beat, even if there is that annoying nun in the background. Sharpe, Harper and the rest of the supporting cast are in fine form, and a top-notch set of guest stars including Jack Spears, Father Curtis and Colonel Berkeley round it off. Leroux is suitably slimy and deadly, and the climatic sword fight one of the more brutal I've seen in the series. All this, and Sir Henry Simmerson (from Sharpe's Company) too. And of course, Harper dipping into grail lore by forging Sharpe a new sword out of loyalty and love. A must-watch.

The Mermaid Chair (2006) Review

The Mermaid Chair (2006)

This is an excellent film; great cast, beautiful locale, and a unique story. It touches on a really forbidden topic - dissatisfied housewife rushes to tormented mother, meets monk, has affair - who touches on this kind of topic anymore? For that matter, how many monks look like Alex Carter? The best performance, though, is by Bruce Greenwood; the confused husband. His subtle performance of the steady, supportive spouse is so touching, especially when he is shaken by his wife's sudden announcement of wanting time on her own. The guy has great facial expressions of confusion, incredulity, and then that quiet but deadly anger. It'll make you weep! A really good film!!!!!!!!!!

NOTE - This is reviewing the show only, as I have yet to see the Extra Features.
REVIEW
Now this is what reality television was meant to be. First off, the focus on what the show is about is dead-on. Sixteen men, who actually qualify to be here, are brought to train with and against each other in hopes of becoming a UFC fighter. The challenges, in which the winners gain the strategic advantage, are fun to watch and result in some good fights. The fights themselves would be worth the DVD alone, especially if they include the legendary Light-Heavyweight bout that finished the show (best of UFC ever!).
But with the fights come good drama, and none of it feels forced. You see, you will learn to love the competitors. You will appreciate the religion of Diego Sanchez, the cool style of Forrest Griffin, and the intelligence of Nathan Quarry. You will also meet some unpleasant fighters like the cocky Josh Koshcheck, the bitter Bobby Southworth, and the troubled Chris Leben. The important thing to note, though, is that even the semi-annoying fighters in the big house aren't unreasonably annoying. With their attitudes comes real emotions and skills that few of us possess. These men are not caricatures, but a magnificent study of how the imbalances of egos and skills clash both in and out of that intimidating octagonal arena.
The coaches are Randy Couture and Chuck Liddell (who fought 1 week after the show's finale), who are strong, wise, approachable, and skilled mixed-martial-artists. Both of these guys bring different but equally effective styles of coaching. Also present is UFC president Dana White. This guy is not executive hogwash. No, this man is not afraid to come down hard on the fighters, and speak bluntly about the 16 guys competing for those contracts. The only problem is that he doesn a little too much commentating with his interviews, but he is insightful and very smart.
What might the unintiated not like about this DVD collection?
Well, this is a show about fighting. If you don't really dig boxing or wrestling, then perhaps this isn't for you. It is a lot easier for me to recommend this First Season as a UFC fan, and martial-arts learner. But this show isn't about violence. The 16 fighters, the coaches, and Dana White all make it clear that UFC fighting is a job with no room for uncertainty. Professional fighting requires calculation, strategy, hard work, mental/emotional stability, and physical conditioning. I watched this entire season with a friend of mine who hates fighting, but she still grew to appreciate what these men do for a living, and loved that the unfit challengers didn't stick around very long.
This show exemplifies the perfect balance for reality TV. It's a competition, but it isn't too focused on being a game show. It's got lots of interviews and fighter-feedback, but is not too interested in the secret alliances or betrayals that have foreshadowed and ruined countless reality TV shows. The fights are good, but there is even intercut opinions to explain why the fighters did what they did in that ring, and why they were or were not smart with their game plan. The crew of this show took the time to edit enough so that fight-fans and martial artists could understand the terms and didn't get bored, and also enough so that newcomers didn't feel confused. I've always liked the UFC, but now I love it. This show has propelled the Ultimate Fighting Championship to new heights, and has rightfully earned its reputation. I'm not fond of reality TV that much (except for WWE's Tough Enough 1 and 2...see a connection here?), but "Ultimate Fighter" is an outstanding work of television, and has been followed by a good second season worthy of the franchise. This crew knows what its doing. I'll even go so far as to say that any fan of TV in general should check this DVD-set out. You want originality, emotional depth, hard-hitting competition, and non-censored television...you can have it all in one package! DO NOT PASS THIS UP!

Baby Einstein - Baby Da Vinci - From Head to Toe (2004)

My first experience with Baby Einstein videos was almost four years ago with my first daughter. Who screamed every time we tried to show her it. I ended up giving it away.
Fast foward to this year. My second daughter, who's 16 months old, has some developmental delays. After chatting with moms of other babies with delays and hearing how much their kids enjoyed Baby Einstein videos, I decided to give it a second chance. After staring at them all at the store, I chose Baby Da Vinci, as it talked about body parts and one of the milestones my daughter hasn't hit yet was the pointing to body parts one.
Well, first viewing - my older daughter, who just turned four, sat down and watched it. The toddler showed vague interest...until the monkey puppets came on. I thought she wasn't paying attention to it then suddenly heard her laughing hysterically at the monkeys. After a few viewings, she fell in love. Even my older daughter wants to watch the "monkey video" as we call it. My toddler is now waving (something the monkeys do), something we couldn't do after literally months of us encouraging her to wave to us and showing her how to wave. I also notice that she's become more vocal since she first watched this video. (I have noticed she's a huge fan of music, so maybe it has something to do with the music?)
And one other bonus - my toddler was cutting molars and woke up just unconsolable one night. Finally after a half hour of her crying and nothing working, I turned on Baby Da Vinci - as soon as the catapillar came across the screen, she calmed down! Anyone who's ever been up with a really unhappy baby can appreciate that!

Televisions #1 comedy celebrates five seasons of funny with big laughs and hilarious new storylines. Charlie (Charlie Sheen) tops the charts as kiddie-song sensation Charlie Waffles. Alan (Jon Cryer) at last meets the perfect woman who just happens to be dating Charlie. Jake (Angus T. Jones) starts junior high, armed with reams of "helpful" advice from Alan and Charlie. Evelyn (Holland Taylor) ties the knot for the fifth time (lots of guests at the wedding, lots of cops at the reception). And as always, Berta (Conchata Ferrell) deals with it all by dealing out a royal flush of deadpan zingers. The guys are in and the welcome mat is out at everyones favorite Malibu beach house. Have a great time!

I thought this would be a great DVD with pirates and singing, but it's a lot of on screen reading and my 3 year old gets bored. Tina Fey is entertaining, but kids don't see her as anyone different from the rest of the adults on the movie. The clay pirate short is cute, but for the first 15 minutes, the movie is mostly talking which doesn't capture my child's interest. The giant squid is a cartoon and is only on for a minute or so. I would think this would be better for 5 year olds.

One Tree Hill - The Complete Third Season (2006) Review

One Tree Hill - The Complete Third Season (2006)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In my junior year of high school ONE TREE HILL premiered after the cancellation of DAWSON'S CREEK and ever since the very first episode I tuned into the series trying to fill the void that DAWSON left. Yet despite the fact that every Thursday morning in Spanish class me and my fellow classmates would spend more time discussing the latest episodes than the verbs we where suppose to be congegating, the series was never really appointment television for me. Although towards the middle of the first season the writers changed part of their staff and the WB put more umpth behind the show and slowly the quality kept building until it reached its penicale in the third season - when ONE TREE HILL became my favorite television on the air (and this being said by a male college sophomore).
Starting in this, the third year, we find the characters very much established as well as their relationships to one another, their histories, and the place in the series as a whole. So right from the beginning of the season everything starts to click together, and once the action starts going and the momentium starts building (around episode four) the season doesn't take a breath.. even in the final moments of the season (literally).
After spending two season's depicted the gang's junior year of High School, Season Three starts out at the beginning of senior year for the gang and everyone is in a different place, trying to live their own lives: Peyton is dealing with loosing Jake, yet again, and to add to her problems her birth mother has come to town with a heartbreaking secret. Brooke returns to tree hill after moving to Los Angeles with her parents, still heartbroken over Lucas, but looking to move on and enjoy her senior year. Nathan and Hailey arn't speaking much, and are living in different homes basically just trying to get through the day without having to deal with one another. Lucas is trying to wrap his head around what happend with Dan in the dealership, and his newly discovered heart problem.
That just adds a summary to the very first couple of episodes and latter on in the season everything is turned upside-down by the untimely death of a major cast member in the mists of a local school shooting (a repercussion from last season's time-capsols), and from their everything starts to escalade into chaos leading up to the can't-take-a-breath seaosn finale (that came really close to being the series finale).
While season three doesn't deal with any of the major things about being a senior (prom, senior trip, college applicatons/exceptances, graduation, and moving on - that is all to be the focus of season four, currently airing on the CW), it is still the strongest season to date and a reason to stay tune for season four!
Season Three Episodes include:
Like You Like an Arsonist
From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea
First Day on a Brand New Planet
An Attempt to Tip The Scales
A Mulititude of Casualties
Locked Hearts and Hand Grenades
Champagne For My Real Friends, Real Pain For My Sham Friends
The Worst Day Since Yesterday
How a Resurrection Really Feels
Brave New World
Return of the Future
I've Got Dreams To Remember
The Wind That Blew My Heart Away
All Tomorrow's Parties
Just Watch The Fireworks
With Tired Eyes, Tired Minds, Tired Souls, We Slept (With Commentary)
Who Will Survive, and What Will Be Left of Them?
When It Isn't Like It Should Be

Nurse Jackie: Season One (2009) Review

Nurse Jackie: Season One (2009)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Having never watched the Sopranos (heresy, I know), I didn't have any preconceived notions of what type of person Edie Falco should or should not be playing. Many of my friends tell me that the character of Nurse Jackie is a far cry from her Carmelo Soprano alter-ego.
Jackie is a full time nurse in a public hospital in New York City. Like most nurses and emergency medical workers, she is overworked and underpaid and trying to make do with what life has handed to her. On the surface, she is hardworking nurse who is a loving mother of two little girls and a devoted wife to Kevin Payton who runs a local bar. Scratch the surface just a little bit and the perfect facade peels away to reveal a drug addicted adulterer who regularly breaks the laws in order to suit her own perceived morals.
Nurse Jackie tackles quite a few heavy subjects during its initial season including assisted suicide, underage children caring for their parents, as well as the rigors of raising children who aren't quite perfect. Medical dramas are a dime a dozen and the comedy versions just always seem to be lacking substance, however the staff writers of Nurse Jackie do a masterful job of mixing the heavy subjects in with very lighthearted, almost slapstick humor.
While the Peyton household hasn't been expanded on very much (honestly you could replace the husband and two little girls with bricks and you probably wouldn't notice much difference), the hospital staff shines in every way. Doctor O'Hara is the archetypal rich doctor as well as the "straight man" for most of Jackie's exploits. While her character was explored a little bit in season one, there wasn't a lot invested yet. Doctor Cooper is the hotshot doctor straight out of Med School looking to make his mark. He's cute and naive and looking to make sure everyone thinks of him as their buddy while trying to become a serious doctor at the same time. Zoey is the nurse counterpart to Cooper; the truly naive nursing student straight from school who hasn't had her spirit crushed by the real world. The rest of the hospital staff, Miss Akalitus, Mo-Mo, and Thor, all play delightful comedic foils throughout the season. The cast list would not be complete without the mention of Eddie, the hospital pharmacist who "supplies" prescription pills to Jackie because he believes he is doing his duty as a good boyfriend. Eddie unfortunately does not know that he is being used by Jackie who has a happy family at home as well as a husband with whom we are led to believe she is still in love with.
Fans of shows like ER will appreciate the drama, however it should be noted that Nurse Jackie is relatively light on the medical science side of the house. While drugs are described, procedures mentioned, there is very little step-by-step-to-recovery type documentation on a per patient level. You'll see gunshot wounds come in, chest tubes inserted, CBC and toxicity reports ordered but not a lot of breakdown into why a doctor orders which test, why they should look at alternatives, etc like in ER. Nurse Jackie was written in order to revolve around the nurse not the doctor, and as such there is a much higher emphasis placed on patient care rather than just medical procedures.
My only gripe with Nurse Jackie is that there is zero conflict resolution throughout the entire season. Season one ended with a cliffhanger and as with all other Showtime/HBO episodic shows, the next season will not premier until sometime in the next year. All of the "will she get caught?" questions that you develop from episode one will still be there after you finish episode twelve (with a few dozen extra questions thrown in by then for good measure). Other than that, Nurse Jackie is a great show, and I suppose that the fact that I want Season Two to start right now! attests to how addicting the series is.

With a white lie here, a bent rule there, and a steady dose of pain relievers for her chronic back pain, Jackie does whatever it takes to get the job done. This is among the best of the western serials. It doesn't really follow the Zorro tradition either storywise or in geographical setting. But it has some of the best western serial action you'll find. As far as having a female Zorro type character, why not? Hey, Linda does quite well for herself as a dashing heroine. And the minor characters, such as the newspaper editor, add much to the fun. This is for enjoyment and not for nitpicking.

It's one of the few kids shows, other than Little Bear, that I let my children watch. Teaches values, shapes, really basic problem solving. I'd recommend for age 2-4, especially boys. It's a bit annoying to listen to if you are a parent, however.

Sinatra - The Classic Duets (2003)

Let's face it. The greatest entertainer-artist of the 20th century was no match for the diminutive television screen, which seemed made to order for the non-threatening, comfortably regular visits of Perry, Andy, and Dino. Nor was he especially suited for singing duets (give the advantage to the adaptable Bing). Nevertheless, these highlights from Sinatra's short-lived '50's television series are admittedly welcome watching, especially for those of us who remember the original moments.
Perhaps the most successful of all the duets is Cole's "You're the Top," with Frank and the brassy Ethel Merman. Hers is one of the few voices that stands up to the incisive edge in the Chairman's timbre.
While the performances here are more "classic" than those from Sinatra's two "Duets" albums from the nineties, the relative brevity of the program (it would easily fit on a CD) raises the question of why the producers of this DVD didn't include any of the solo performances from the same series. And the interspersed commentary by Nancy, Tina, and Frank Jr., while palatable and diverting, is predictable and uninformative ("Dad enjoyed working with Elvis," "Sammy always brought out the best in Dad").
If you're looking for Sinatra on television, a better bet is the specials (with Ella, Jobim, Diahann Carroll) from the 60's and 70's. Or, if you can swing it, the complete programs from which these highlights were extracted.

Hello, First off I'm a straight guy, male, ect... and will stay that way. I'll be honest, I'm a in the military serving in the Middle East. I ordered the first season thinking mostly about the possible sex and nude scenes I would find, as explicit porn is not exactly allowed where I am. I found what I wanted, but what I really didn't expect was how into the show I would get. I really find this show to be one of the best written and intriguing shows that I've come across. I give the show 5 stars for its evenly mixed comedy, romance, and drama. I also think that this show shines light for acceptance of the gay/lesbian lifestyle and helps others understand that yes homosexual's are actually people as well. I have already watched the 2nd and 3rd season and have pre-ordered the 4th. I think that this show is awesome and is well worth the money to watch it. I also really enjoyed the beginnings of each episode with a something that happened in the past that directly relates to the episode. Also I love the chart and how it shows how everyone is connected. I'm a big fan of Jewel and I think it reflects the "Pieces of You" song extremely well; and how your actions can affect the people around you. Again awesome show and I would recommend it to anyone from all walks of life.

An edge of your seat thriller that does not let you go once the ball starts rolling. This excellent made for T.V. movie came out in the early 90's on the USA network. Three white women, a mother and daughter, along with her auntie drive home on Thanksgiving night and run out of gas in the wrong part of town called "Gravesend". A multicultural street gang takes offense to their territory invasion and sparks a deadly game of cat and mouse with tragic consequences. The women have to utilize basic survival skills and creative intelligence to get out of a kill or be killed situation. What makes this movie stand out is it's dark, gritty and realistic approach. The violent action sequences looks like it came from a theatrical release and has a good amount of blood to go with it. The characters are believable and not one dimensional stereotypes. When the main players are introduced and the premise is set, we go along for the ride as if we are there with them. This is a great find and would be forgotten if not for this recent official DVD release. The movie itself is four stars but I'll give it five for the cheap DVD price that definitely makes it worth owning. Makes me wonder if "Judgement Night" with Emilio Estevez which came out in theaters a year later was inspired by this little film. It's a T.V. cult classic in need of a following. They don't make it like this anymore!
