Did you ever wonder what it would be like if the characters from the happy meal had their own cartoon show? That's what happened here. McDonald's got Klasky-Csupo (one of the better animation companies) to bring those characters to life in their signature style. The McToons have similar faces as the characters on Klasky-Csupo's hit show RUGRATS.
The video opens up with a live-action Ronald McDonald singing a theme song for the video series. In the credits, the song is credited to Ronald himself and not a man dressed up as a clown (this is also the case with the voice actor for his cartoon character!). It is somewhat interesting to note that much of the background music for this tape was recorded by Mark Mothersbaugh from the band DEVO. After Ronald is done singing he gives a little intro to the cartoon episode and uses several puns.
The cartoon itself involves four familiar faces from McDonaldland: Birdie, Grimace, Hamburglar and of course Ronald. The Fry Guys are nowhere to be found, although they'd fit right in with the Rugrats-style hair. Two new characters were invented for this cartoon series: Franklin, a young boy who follows the gang on their adventures, and Sundae, a dog who speaks with a deadpan voice. Franklin's old man happens to be an eccentric scientist who is working out the kinks in his new time machine. Hamburglar, not a man known for his power of restraint, messes with the machine and accidentally transports the group back into such time periods as the Renaissance, the Old West, and the 1970s. The '70s section seems like it is aimed at parents who were raised on McDonald's food since it features two things that children would know nothing about: "the hustle" and MAYOR McCHEESE! Now if we could only get Mac Tonite to make a cameo. I was excited to see the Mayor in cartoon form, but this was not the most unusual part of the video.
The first pit stop on Mr. McDonald's wild ride is to the days of the dinosaurs. One interesting feature of their time machine is that it resembles the TARDIS from Dr. Who. Another interesting feature of the machine is that whenever the group walk off the machine into the outside world, their clothes have mysteriously been changed to a version that is relevant to their new surroundings. So for example when they walk off into the dino-desert, they are wearing bone necklaces and animal pelts. They flee from a T-Rex into a cave where they encounter prehistoric versions of themselves. Hamburglar says out loud that the situation makes no sense because dinosaurs did not coexist with humans, but nobody follows up. Initially they are disturbed by their less developed counterparts but all is well when they decide to sing a song together about how much they have in common.
I believe that this video explains a lot about Hamburglar. He discovers that his "cave brother" also enjoys stealing hamburgers. When the gang goes to the old west, they are chased through the streets by an angry mob who confuses Hamburglar for a notorious criminal. The man in question is named "Henry H Burglar, II" and Hamburglar states that he is actually the man's great-great-grandson. One has to wonder about the values of a family that produces such a legacy of klepto-phagists. In modern America, Child Protective Services would have snatched Hamburglar away from this harsh cycle in order to save him from his family's unsuitable form of parenting. Fortunately for him, the psychedelic social code in McDonaldland seems to turn a blind eye to food theft.
This video is weird but entertaining. I would recommend it to fans of 1990s cartoons and fast food historians.

(More customer reviews)I brought this video at the point when my son knew what a letter was, but could not distinguish one letter from another. He loves the video and he will repeat the information as he goes through the video. We have owned it for about a month and he knows about half of his letters. The video starts off by singing the alphabet and the letters are shown through a puzzle. Then the alphabet is said and show just as letters on the screen. Next they go through the alphabet. "Big A. Little A. A has two sounds. A a a Apple, a a a ape, a a a acorn.", etc. They go through about 5 letters, and then they repeat the letters through a test. "Do you know what sound the letter A makes?" "I know a a a ape and a a a acorn." Finally, they sing a song about the alphabet and different objects to help remember the letter sounds.
This is not a flashy scene video like baby einstein. For the most part it uses real objects, but does put in some computer graphics that look like real objects. It is not fast paced and it is repetative. It is designed to learn the ABCs and does it very well.
If your child is ready to learn the ABC's it is very beneficial. If your child is younger and enjoys looking at children and babies at play or real objects they may enjoy the video. Older children who already know their ABCs and the sounds will probably be bored with the video.

LazyTown - New Superhero (2004) Review

(More customer reviews)"LazyTown" is a show marrying live-action and animation, a fairly recent port to the United States from Iceland. It's part of the new breed of children's animated programs these days --- programming especially focused on making viewers "get up and go" and as far as this goes, it's at the top of its game.
"LazyTown" features a human girl, Stephanie, a human hero, Sportacus and his human nemesis, Robbie Rotten. The rest of the characters are CGI animated and quite well too. The setup is this --- generally in each episode, Sportacus (advocate of getting up and going) battles the plots and schemes of Robbie Rotten (trying and endlessly failing to make those in LazyTown lazy, also a master of disguise.) He just can't stand all the activity in LazyTown, but usually ends up expending a lot of energy himself trying to stop it. The simple fact is, no one's lazy in LazyTown anymore, largely thanks to Stephanie, an energetic girl with bubble-gum pink hair. She's still fairly new in town and living with her Uncle, Mayor Meanswell. Her group of friends is Ziggy, Pixel, Trixie and Stingy.
"LazyTown" is loaded with high energy, fun songs. The opening theme and "funny words" songs can be heard in every episode and there's also at least one other new song in each one.
This DVD features three episodes of the show, including a special double-length episode --- "LazyTown's New Superhero." This one plays around with the format a bit, as the kids decide to give Sportacus a vacation. While Sportacus struggles to relax and take it easy, Stephanie does her best to become the new town superhero. Also included in this DVD are "Cry Dinosaur," in which Robbie Rotten dresses up as a dinosaur to scare "Sporta-Crybaby" and "Dr. Rottenstein," in which he tricks the kids into believing they have spotty vegetitis and must swear off vegetables and eat nothing but junk food. Not only that, but under the guise of Rottenstein, he bans Sportacus from LazyTown "forever," another one of his old tricks.In case you're wondering why I gave this four stars instead of five, it's because of the special features. I truly believe that DVD releases these days must have great special features in order to receive a five-star rating. Unfortunately, this DVD just doesn't measure up. All you get are written character profiles that you can browse through, a couple of pages of "Nicktrition" tips and some short previews for Dora and Blue's Room DVD releases as well as "My Little Pony: A Very Minty Christmas." These are okay, there's definitely nothing wrong with them, but it only takes about five minutes to go through at most. It couldn't have hurt to put at least a bit more effort into some nice special features.

Presented as operettas, these 12-minute Nick Jr. cartoons for infants and toddlers are produced with a live orchestra and feature characters who sing all of their dialogue opera-style. Toss in a surreal cut-and-paste animation style -- think "South Park" done with photos and realistic backgrounds -- and an occasional tinge of attitude and you've got a program that's appealing for parents as well as their kids. Before branching out on his own, creator Josh Selig was a long-time writer for "Sesame Street."
The stories are good, too. Focused on teaching the value of teamwork, they chronicle the adventures of three pets at a preschool -- Linny the Guinea Pig, Ming-Ming Duckling and Turtle Tuck. After the kids go home, these secret super heroes ditch their cages and soar off in a makeshift flying sailboat (the Fly Boat), traveling the globe to rescue baby animals. Along the way they learn interesting science facts. Besides the show's obvious educational value, each of the characters has his or her own intrinsic appeal. Like many toddlers, Tuck loves to give hugs and Ming-Ming pronounces the "R" sound as a "W." Linny, meanwhile, is the oldest (she's 5), the most educated and a food connoisseur. Her catch phrase? "This calls for some celery!"
Debuting in 2006, the show is now the top-rated program on Nick Jr., surpassing long-time ratings champ "Dora the Explorer."
This DVD contains seven "Wonder Pets" stories, about an hour and a half of material. Six are standard episodes of the television program, grouped in sets of two. There's "Save the Caterpillar" teamed with "Save the Crane," "Save the Crocodile" with "Save the Hedgehog," and "Save the Kangaroo" with "Save the Sea Lions." The best of these shorts is "Save the Crane," which takes the Pets into a Japanese Sumi-e painting (simple black strokes on white paper) that's hanging on the preschool wall.
The seventh story is "Save the Wonder Pets," a double-length episode that aired as a Nick special on April 23. This story, though presented gently, is especially dramatic. When our heros try to rescue a baby blowfish, they soon find themselves, "Finding Nemo" like, in the belly of a whale. As the blowfish, a sea horse and a squid pitch in, the Pets' attempts to get the whale to open its mouth include making it a seaweed salad, singing it a lullaby and tickling it. The last one works, and shoots our heroes out of the blowhole to freedom.
As for bonus features, there's not much. Just a four-screen slideshow that introduces each character and their Fly Boat. But it really doesn't matter. The shows themselves are easily worth the money.

I like the singing and I love, "This is se-wious!" The first song my grandson ever sang was the one about teamwork. His father is going to be so sorry I found this! Bwahaha!

Sesame Street: Abby in Wonderland (2008) Review

(More customer reviews)This is the first time I've seen the Abby character in the Sesame Street programs and she sure is cute! She has a darling voice which the little ones seem to find fascinating. Sesame Street always does a great job with their DVD's and they're a favorite here. It's nice that this one is a little longer at 40 minutes than the typical 30 minutes which seems to fly by.
The voices are cute, the movie is colorful with lots of activity and the story which is a take off on Alice in Wonderland with Abby taking the part of Alice is a good one. The Sesame Street cast takes the other parts, like the Cheshire Cookie Cat or Bert and Ernie as Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee.
About the only thing I would change and the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because it isn't a "Fast Play" or auto start DVD. You have to wait for the menu to come up and click on play. It's nice to have movies which start over on their own like the Sesame Street Sleepytime Songs and Stories. But all in all, I'd say this is a good addition to the collection.

Sesame Street's newest muppet, fairy Abby Cadabby, falls asleep and follows a Red Rabbit (Elmo) down a rabbit hole and in to a "Wonderland," where she encounters quirky and whimsical characters including Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum (Bert and Ernie) and The Cheshire Cookie Cat. She also attends a silly tea party presided over by a Mad Hatter (Grover) who also can be a "sad" hatter or a "glad" hatter with the change of a hat. Will Abby find her missing magic wand and be able to get back to Sesame Street, or does the Grouch of Hearts (Oscar) have other plans?

Wonder Pets - Save the Beetles (2006) Review

(More customer reviews)The Wonder Pets! get groovy in the newest release, "Save the Beetles!" Yes, the Wonder Pets are called up on the ol' telly with a request for help from four members of a famous rock band, the Beetles, whose yellow submarine has gotten tangled up in kelp. As they journey to rescue them, they'll dive straight into Beatlemania pop-culture (and reference numerous Beatles song titles and lyrics along the way!) It's a fun journey, with two of the Beetles being voiced by... well, no, not the Beatles themselves, but by members of the cast of the stage play "Beatlemania!"
In the second half, "Three Wonder Pets and a Baby!," the Wonder Pets find themselves with a baby on their hands -- a baby pig! This one is really cute and could quickly become a fan favorite. It may be even more fun than "Save the Beetles!" There are many cute baby-related things, including various pictures of actual babies (my guess is children of the show staff.)
None of the other episodes released on this DVD are new either. Still, they're good content. One of them is "Save the Chameleon / Save the Platypus." "Save the Platypus" is particularly good, because it shows how a friend and team-member (Linny) can maintain a level-head when two others (Tuck and Ming-Ming) are arguing. There's also "Save the Duckling / Save the Kitten" and "Save the Sheep / Save the Hermit Crab" (music from both of these stories is featured on the "Wonder Pets!" album release.)
It's a shame that this DVD continues the tradition of not really including much in the way of special feature content. The only real special feature is the "Kelp!" music video -- which is just an easier way to access content that is already part of the episode. I was really hoping for behind-the-scenes stuff on "Save the Beetles!" -- "The Backyardigans," after all, gave us a behind-the-scenes look at "International Superspy," complete with scenes of Cyndi Lauper recording a song for it.

(my husband and I truly enjoy it as well!) It is bright and simple enough to hold the attention of our toddler, and also has the humor to entertain our Kindergartener, while delivering a message at the same time! Recommend this for families with children over a range of ages!

Polka Palace Party is a very close second, though. The creators of Backyardigans keep getting better by combining creative adventures for the 5 friends with terrific song and dance numbers. The clarity of the video is so clear it's almost 3-D.

Elmo's Christmas Countdown (2008) Review

(More customer reviews)My son is almost 2 years old and a huge Elmo fan. We purchased this DVD under a week ago and he's already watched it 6 times! He's requesting it all the time ! The scenes with Anne Hathaway, Alicia Keys and Jamie Foxx are memorable and my husband and I find ourselves singing the songs long after the DVD is over. A must for any Elmo fan. I can see this as a pre-Christmas ritual from now on.

(More customer reviews)If you are tired of all the twaddle out there in TV land for preschoolers and kindergarteners, you have come to the right place. Peep not only has cute characters, it has a point to all of it's stories. And not just facts!
[Not that there is anything wrong with facts, but facts alone do not an education make.]
What really stands out about this series, in my opinion, is it's ability to teach children reasoning skills. Every episode has a problem and Peep, Duck (my personal favorite), Chirp and company demonstrate the various ways that one can look at the problem; and how one might approach the problem to solve it.
Failure? That just means you need to think some more, maybe reframe the problem, and try again.
Four Stars. Great price for these three DVD's. Cute characters and charming, simple presentation that children can't resist. (Mom either--lol) The stories provide teaching moments that most other shows don't. Logic and reasoning as well as facts.

Part live action, part puppets and some CGI animation, this appealing series also stars one of the most loveable of villains, played by the talented Stefan Karl Steffanson, a hottie with a strong jaw line, an impressive wardrobe of costumes and a never ending stream of nefarious gadgets.
This is the fifth DVD release, and contains four episodes from Season One (2004 - 2005):
Records Day (Episode 18): There's an opening in the LazyTown Records Book for "Laziest Person" and Robbie is looking forward to having his name entered for posterity as the record holder in this category. Unfortunately, Stephanie and the other kids also have their eyes on various records, and a villain's gotta do what a villain's gotta do to put a stop to all the activity.
Hero For a day (Episode 7): Ziggy wants to be a hero like Sportacus, but of course things don't work out as planned for the candy addicted lad.
Zap It! (Episode 17): Lazy Pixel hates cleaning, so he invents a machine that makes things disappear, especially the garbage in an untidy room. Robbie sees an ideal opportunity to get rid of Sportacus forever. (Insert diabolical laughter and a little dance jig here)
Secret Agent Zero (Episode 27): Move over Mayor Milford Meanswell, because there's a new mayor in town. Suspecting that the election has been rigged, the kids go undercover with Mayor Meanswell to reveal the truth behind the ballot.
The special features are disappointing, with only two short exercise dances that are impossible to follow, and there are no subtitles or closed captioning. It can however be played in French - oooh la la!Amanda Richards, August 7, 2006

Show overview: The people of LazyTown love to lounge. They find inactivity invigorating and they revel in relaxation. On any given day you can find the inhabitants of LazyTown doing whatever requires the least amount of effort. Which means kicking aback in comfy chairs, vegging out in front of the TV, playing video games and gulping down junk food. The children of LazyTown are in dire need of a hero to look up to, someone to show them alternatives to all the bad habits and easy solutions they see around them."Record’s Day" will be the fifth LazyTown home video title. The main episode focus on Stephanie and the LazyTown kids trying to break different kinds of records while Robbie Rotten tries for one of his own.The DVD will include 2 main episodes and 2 bonus episodes, each approximately 24 minutes in length, for an approximate runtime of 100 minutes.
