(More customer reviews)My daughters love The Wiggles, so we were ecstatic to see a brand-new movie. From an adult point of view, the story was very uneven, and the whole section with the tiny folk from Planet Teeny Weeny was unnecessary - there was no great song, just the boys doing a quick irish jig. Did my kids care? Nope! They loved this movie - if they could type they would have given it 5 stars. Instead, I (picky adult that I am) gave it four because, hey we adults watch it too! (At work recently, the song "Dance your gloomies away" would NOT leave my head)
My kids loved the songs. The "Eagle Rock" song was great, and my 2 1/2 yr old can now follow most of the dance moves.
Bottom line: Story is weak, not too many songs, but who cares? Kids will love it!

LazyTown - New Superhero (2004) Review

(More customer reviews)"LazyTown" is a show marrying live-action and animation, a fairly recent port to the United States from Iceland. It's part of the new breed of children's animated programs these days --- programming especially focused on making viewers "get up and go" and as far as this goes, it's at the top of its game.
"LazyTown" features a human girl, Stephanie, a human hero, Sportacus and his human nemesis, Robbie Rotten. The rest of the characters are CGI animated and quite well too. The setup is this --- generally in each episode, Sportacus (advocate of getting up and going) battles the plots and schemes of Robbie Rotten (trying and endlessly failing to make those in LazyTown lazy, also a master of disguise.) He just can't stand all the activity in LazyTown, but usually ends up expending a lot of energy himself trying to stop it. The simple fact is, no one's lazy in LazyTown anymore, largely thanks to Stephanie, an energetic girl with bubble-gum pink hair. She's still fairly new in town and living with her Uncle, Mayor Meanswell. Her group of friends is Ziggy, Pixel, Trixie and Stingy.
"LazyTown" is loaded with high energy, fun songs. The opening theme and "funny words" songs can be heard in every episode and there's also at least one other new song in each one.
This DVD features three episodes of the show, including a special double-length episode --- "LazyTown's New Superhero." This one plays around with the format a bit, as the kids decide to give Sportacus a vacation. While Sportacus struggles to relax and take it easy, Stephanie does her best to become the new town superhero. Also included in this DVD are "Cry Dinosaur," in which Robbie Rotten dresses up as a dinosaur to scare "Sporta-Crybaby" and "Dr. Rottenstein," in which he tricks the kids into believing they have spotty vegetitis and must swear off vegetables and eat nothing but junk food. Not only that, but under the guise of Rottenstein, he bans Sportacus from LazyTown "forever," another one of his old tricks.In case you're wondering why I gave this four stars instead of five, it's because of the special features. I truly believe that DVD releases these days must have great special features in order to receive a five-star rating. Unfortunately, this DVD just doesn't measure up. All you get are written character profiles that you can browse through, a couple of pages of "Nicktrition" tips and some short previews for Dora and Blue's Room DVD releases as well as "My Little Pony: A Very Minty Christmas." These are okay, there's definitely nothing wrong with them, but it only takes about five minutes to go through at most. It couldn't have hurt to put at least a bit more effort into some nice special features.

Baby Einstein - Baby Galileo - Discovering the Sky (2003) Review

(More customer reviews)I don't quite understand what is so horrible about Baby Galileo. Reviewers are saying how aweful it was, but are giving no explanation as to why, so I'm going to explain why it worked for me and my child.
I was extremely pleased with the Baby Galileo video. My daughter is three and a half years old and soaks in anything she sees. Although she is on the older end of the suggested ages for these videos, she still is learning from them and enjoying them. This video was a great way for her to learn the general ideas about the sky. The video opens with puppets, which are a trademark in Julie Clark's videos. There are narrations by children, and 15 different pieces of classical music ranging from Claire De Lune to Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. There are several chapters in the video introducing a new concept- those being the sky, the sun, the clouds, the stars, the moon, the planets, the galaxy and space. There are real pictures and video of the sun, moon and others while they are supplemented with toys, graphics and music that go along with the sky/space theme.
I am an early childhood educator, and I see these videos as being some of the most developmentally appropriate videos out there for children to watch. The video expresses many subjects, textures, colors and most of all, beautiful classical music to soothe your child and spark their interest and attention. I'm not quite sure why these videos haven't worked for other parents, but they've been successful in my family and many others that I know. I highly recommend the Baby Einstein collection- at least try them, especially Baby Galileo.

Baby Einstein - Baby Van Gogh - World of Colors (2002) Review

(More customer reviews)We have all of the video products of the Baby Einstein Company. This video is more similar in format to Baby Shakespeare than the Baby Mozart / Baby Bach videos. Nevertheless, I would say that Baby Van Gogh is a better attention-getter and -holder than Baby Shakespeare. The visuals are much more professional and entertaining - the main content being color and art, as opposed to poetry readings.
If you are new to the Baby Einstein Company's products, I highly recommend them over the products of the competing companies (we have a VERY extensive childern's video library). The live-action visuals are far more engaging to infants and toddlers than the computer graphics and animation of other videos. In this respect (visually), Baby Van Gogh is even more dynamic than some of the earlier Baby Einstein productions - and certainly has a bit higher production quality. For babies under 6 months, however, I would recommend Baby Mozart as the best 'starter' in the series.
As with Baby Mozart, Baby Bach and Baby Einstein, my daughter (now almost nine months) cannot get enough of this video.

Baby Einstein - Neighborhood Animals (2002) Review

(More customer reviews)We used the baby Bach and baby Mozart videos when our 7 month old was younger and she loves them, but Neighborhood Animals is her all time favorite. She sits in her walker and watches the animals and even tries to talk to them. She gets excited when the pupets/animals make sounds and loves the music. She smiles and starts making her little baby sounds everytime she see Pavlov the dog. We used to put her in her swing and let her watch Bach or Mozart while we get ready for work in the A.M. But with this video she got so excited in the swing that we had to put her on the floor or in her walker! Even though the age recommendations are 1 yr to 4 yr I highly recommend it for younger babies. I took the video over to the sitters and she said all the kids liked it and watched intently. (the ages are 8mth, 7mth, 5mth and 2 years!) I'm not a big fan of sitting my daughter in front of the TV; however, when both parents work and you need to buy a little time in the morning this is the greatest! I hope your children love it as much as my daughter does!

(More customer reviews)would do what they did. Disney went and tried to make the videos better. Lots of animation, loud music and fast moving things. They did keep some of the old (simple) concept but they added to it and made it more like most other kids videos. It was so peaceful to watch the old ones. I have all of the other Baby Einstein videos and love them and both of my kids love them. I bought this one because of the reputation of the original company. Now, that Disney owns them I guess I'll be thinking twice before I buy the next one that comes out. I was wondering if they would try to improve on something that worked so well just like it was. There are also no children in this video and the puppets are limited. These were my daughter's favorite things in the other videos. It certainly isn't a bad video but it's just not as good as the others. So, if you really liked the others you might be disappointed in this one also. And, to be fair, my daughter asked to watch it a second time right after watching it so it can't be all bad.

As much as I've said I'm sick of the Wiggles (we're going on 3 years of listening to them!!), I must say I find myself dancing to this one with my 3 and 5 year old boys. It's a lot of fun.

The Backyardigans - Super Secret Super Spy (2004) Review

(More customer reviews)This DVD contains the last episodes of Season Two of The Backyardigans, but luckily for us all, there's going to be a Season Three.
In a change of format, the first adventure is a double feature, rolled into one 60 minute spy movie named "International Super Spy (Parts 1 & 2)", complete with music, opening sequences, and lots of gadgets. Pablo plays Agent Secret, Tasha is the head of the secret service, and Austin is the kangaroo of many disguises as Pablo's faithful contact. Of course there must be villains, and this time Agent Secret is up against Uniqua, as the Lady in Pink and her evil henchman Tyrone, who looks like Odd Job. The assignment is to recover three cylinders before the bad guys do.
Modeled after the James Bond movies, this one provides excellent entertainment for all ages, with hot dance numbers and a guest appearance in voice over by Cyndi Lauper, the girl who knows how to have fun.
The next episode is "The Secret of Snow" where Uniqua seeks out Ice Lady Tasha to find the aforementioned secret. Austin is the Ice Lady's overworked and kind hearted assistant, while Pablo is a cowboy and Tyrone is a jungle dweller. This one is set to Christmas tunes including Jingle Bells, Good King Wenceslaus and Deck the Halls.
The show ends with "A Giant Problem" where Queen Uniqua's afternoon nap is rudely interrupted by the pitter patter of Tasha's giant feet. Silly sorcerers Tyrone and Pablo are commanded to chase the giant away, but aren't so sure they can handle such a big job. The music for this episode is immediately recognizable as `80s pop.
Another excellent Backyardigans DVD, and a must-have if you're a fan of the series.Amanda Richards, September 29, 2007

The Backyardigans: Robot Repairman (2009) Review

(More customer reviews)The robot repairman episode is the new favorite in our house. Great music, and definitely a fun movie for my kids (1 and 3). My son (3) asks to watch it every morning. The other two episodes on this disc are not that great, which is the reason for my 4-star review. Both episodes only have Tyrone, Pablo and Uniqua (missing Austin and Tasha) and they seem to fall flat. Overall though, definitely a good buy for Backyardigans fans!
**Robot Repairman: Austin is a robot repairman in Mega City. Together with Uniqua, Tasha and Tyrone, he must figure out why all the robots are suddenly malfunctioning. Set to disco music!
** Catch that Train: Uniqua is a train conductor moving the Czar to his winter home. She and Pablo must catch the runaway train before it's too late.
** 50 Foot Worman: Pablo and Uniqua are scientists at a university. Uniqua is studying wormen, and Pablo is working on a growth formula. When the two mix, they team up with Tyrone to shrink the worman.

Each adventure takes place in the imaginations of the five friends who turn their shared backyard into different fantasy worlds, each episode full of song and dance numbers of various music genres.
This DVD has four episodes:
1. The Snow Fort: Pablo and Tyrone are brave and fearless Mounties, defending their snow fort and the treasure within. Tasha and Uniqua are Ski Patrollers with a thermos full of hot chocolate, just looking for someone to rescue. Mounties on duty! Ski Patrol to the rescue! An action packed adventure set to a Country music theme.
2. The Yeti: Four funky songs and a catchy cry of "Yeti yeti yeti yeti!" as the friends hunt the elusive hairy, smelly, raisin-eating Yeti.
3. Knights Are Brave and Strong: Uniqua the Pink battles the Moose of the Mist and the Guardian of the Gate to deliver an important message from Queen Tasha to King Austin. Big band swing and four new songs.

We own all five DVDs, and the first one "It's Great to be a Ghost" is still a regular on our play list, as are the others.This one has four episodes as usual, two of which were also included in the Nick Jr Favorites DVDs. The list for this one is:Surf's Up: Pablo, Tyrone and Uniqua brush up their "rad" surfing moves in order to ride the perfect wave at Tiki Beach, but who is that mysterious lifeguard?Riding the Range: Tyrone is on his way to Texas, and meets up with Pablo, Uniqua and Tasha who're tracking down a jump-rope bandit.Race to the Tower of Power: Two supervillains battle it out with two superheroes for possession of the Key to the World and with it, world domination. Whahahahhahaha!!The Quest for Flying Rock: Four explorers quibble over the directions on a mysterious map, and end up having an obstacle race.This series is highly recommended for children of all ages, and is one of the most imaginative and entertaining at the moment. My son is watching it right now, and I LOVE the Bollywood style music of Into the Deep, which serves as a background for the mermaids Tasha and Uniqua! (I can't help but sway as I write this!)
Here are the episodes found on this DVD:
INTO THE DEEP - In this underwater Bollywood musical, Deep-Sea Explorers Tyrone and Pablo attempt to capture the garden-guarding Mermaids Uniqua and Tasha--on film, that is!
NEWS FLASH - Proud, Motown-singing Farmers Pablo and Tyrone inadvertently set up an out-of-this-world encounter in their cornfield to get their prized corn crop on the news.

The Special Features are minimal: a Dora Saves the Mermaids sneak peek (it will be released in September of 2007) and a Can't Stop the Cops video.
This DVD has a runtime of 99 minutes--and is yet another fine addition to the Backyardigans DVDs!

The Backyardigans - Mission to Mars (2004) Review

(More customer reviews)Many, many thanks are extended to Nelvana and Nick Jr. for bringing back the Backyardigans for another season. This DVD has four episodes from the second season (which will reportedly have twenty episodes) and although the musical genres are rather obscure (at least I've never heard of some of them), the quality of entertainment exceeds the first season.
"Mission to Mars" starts it off with Kenyan High Life music, one of the genres I've never heard of before, but which sounds like a cross between calypso and Latin music. Uniqua, Pablo and Austin are astronauts who head off to Mars to investigate a mysterious audio signal. Tyrone and Tasha remain behind to man mission control.
"Samurai Pie" is my absolute favorite episode of the whole series so far. Far East meets Western in this wonderful combination of spaghetti western music (a genre I HAVE heard of before), and kung fu / ninja action movies. The settings are very similar to those in the movie "Spirited Away", mixed with some "Karate Kid", "Kung Fu" and "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon". Tyrone makes the world's greatest samurai pies, and is teaching his apprentice Austin the tricks of the trade. Their task is to make the Great Pie for Empress Tasha, and get it to her royal table before the pie-stealing ninjas Uniqua and Pablo make off with it.
"Scared of You" has Tasha as a mad scientist, with Austin as her henchman. Even though it's his birthday, she sends him out on a mission to deliver secret letters to three monsters, Tyrone the mummy, Uniqua the werewolf and Pablo the vampire. The letters are actually invitations to a surprise birthday "Monster Party" with lots of singing and dancing to a `50s small band theme.
"Whodunit?" is an Agatha Christie-type mystery adventure, set in Mystery Manor, on the Misty Moors of Scotland, with detective Pablo trying to find Lady Tasha's stolen jewels. Is the thief neighbor Mr. Austin Frothingslosh, unexpected visitor Uniqua Underhood, or did Butler Tyrone do it?
Cute, but never annoying; imaginative, but still simple enough for young children to enjoy; informative without being preachy, lots of singing and dancing to new musical genres, plus now (ta-dah!!!!!) with Alicia Keyes on board as a singing mommy Martian - what more could you possibly ask for in children's entertainment?Amanda Richards, October 26, 2006

The ones before this are "It's Great to Be a Ghost” (2005), "The Snow Fort” (2005), and "Polka Palace Party” (2006).

Cave Party: Set to a calypso beat, albeit a somewhat dated version of the genre. The friends go back in time to the Ice Age to howl at the moon, and invent some pretty useful things along the way.
Race Around the World: Not sure of the music genre here, but the friends take part in a tough race involving running through the jungle, snowboarding, kayaking across the ocean and hiking across the desert.
Eureka: A couple of crusty old prospectors and a couple of brilliant scientists join forces to find gold and dinosaur bones in them thar hills
Castaways: To a Bossa Nova beat, three castaways get a little help from a mysterious benefactor to survive on a deserted island.

123 Count with Me/Learning About Letters (2007) Review

(More customer reviews)My kids (3 and 1 and a half) love Sesame Street's Count on Me 123 video. They were a little younger when I first bought it and while the storyline (Ernie finds a 'Furry Arms' room key on the street, returns it to the hotel & starts teaching everyone how to count) went over their heads at first, the catchy tunes, skits & scenes (mainly from the early Sesame Street episodes) soon caught their attention. There's a cohesive plot & everything links well.
Now my 3-year-old knows most of the words and even my one-and-a-half can say some numbers - it's a great video, fun to watch even for adults, and I highly recommend it.
Learning about Letters is more of a cut-and-paste of other Sesame Street skits & scenes - not that this isn't good, just that it's standard fare. I like that they are taken from the earlier Sesame Street episodes as I prefer the quality then. And my one-and-a-half year old loves the "C is for Cookie" song that I remember from back then!

(More customer reviews)My son has four Backyardigans videos, the Mission to Mars DVD, and two CD's. We just bought The Legend of the Volcano Sisters a few weeks ago, and, needless to say, this HAS to be one of his favorites!
He has played this DVD over and over again--often singing the songs to himself even when the DVD is off! Speaking of songs, if you love the catchy, clever songs spanning oodles of music styles in this DVD, you'll love both of the Backyardigans CDs. The newest one is Groove to the Music, but it only features one song found on The Legend of the Volcano Sisters DVD: Track 15 "We'll Get You What You Want" featured in the episode of the same name.
Here is a brief synopsis of all four episodes as found on the back of the case:
* The Legend of the Volcano Sisters - The tarantella plays as legendary Luau Brothers Pablo, Tyrone, and Austin try to appease Volcano Sisters Tasha and Uniqua so their volcano doesn't erupt and ruin the big luau! (If you have a little princess in the family--on even "The Queen"!--you'll get a chuckle out of this episode, where the gals never say what they want...but expect the guys to guess!)
* The Swamp Creature - Sixties guitar music rocks the boat as Tour Guides Uniqua and Pablo lure in customers Tasha and Austin with promises of the Swamp Creature. Little do they know, Swamp Creature Tyrone actually exists! (In this funny episode, Uniqua and Pablo try to shyster customers into believing that there's a Swamp Monster--are are surprised to find there actually IS one in the swamp!)
* Horsing Around - Giddy-up to Klezmer music as Cowgirl Uniqua and Jockey Pablo race to find out who's the best horse rider in the west. You won't believe the winner... (Very cute--with a surprise winner!)
* Special Delivery - The Do-Gooders, a tough but good biker gang, rev up to Norteno music to bring a missing mailbag--and their Valentine's Day cards--to nervous Mailman Tyrone!
Because of the last episode, this makes a particularly good DVD for a Valentine's Day gift--but it can be enjoyed anytime!
There aren't many special features, unfortunately--only a Wonder Pets! sneak peek and a Secret Agent dance along. They don't even include a full-size poster like the one included in the Mission to Mars DVD.
Still, you can't beat this 99 minute DVD when it comes to cleverness, musical variety, colorful characters, and great storytelling!

(More customer reviews)Don't let this brightly colored CGI cartoon fool you into thinking it's only for kids. This is one you can watch for the umpteenth time without rolling your eyes way up in your head, and is one of the most entertaining shows to come out recently.
Each adventure takes place in the imagination of five young friends who turn their shared backyard into different fantasy worlds, each episode full of song and dance numbers of various music genres. Imagine hearing your kids singing `20s Jazz tunes while cartoon characters tap dance across the screen, and you'll pretty much get the idea.
This DVD has four episodes:
1.It's Great to Be a Ghost: This is the `20s Jazz episode, where Pablo (the blue penguin), Tyrone (the brown moose) and Uniqua (the pink spotted female of indeterminate species) pretend to be ghosts haunting an old house, and do their best to scare Tasha (the yellow hippo) an "unsuspecting stranger" who drops by the house.
2.Monster Detectives: This one has an early rock n' roll theme, and features Tyrone as a detective and Uniqua, who has lost her soccer ball, as they go to the castle of Pablo the Soccer Monster to get it back.
3.The Key to the Nile is another musical adventure, where Queen CleoTasha and her attendants Pablo, Tyrone and Austin (the purple kangaroo) seek three treasures of the Nile to present to the sphinx Uniqua.
4.Pirate Treasure is my favorite, set to a reggae beat, as the friends learn to work together to uncover buried treasure. Arrrr!
