And "Lost: The Complete Fifth Season" may be the best season of the show yet, with some unexpected glimpses back into the Island's history, mysterious people, and more explorations of the mysterious Jacob. It feels like the entire season is packed with strange twists and unexpected turns, complete with a trip back in time that illuminates everything that has come before it.
Jack joins forces with his former enemy Ben, trying to bring the Oceanic Six back together and get them back to the Island. But Charles Widmore has been sending assassins to kill Hurley and Sayid, and someone is sniffing around Kate's relationship to Aaron. Their only hope of getting back to the Island is to follow the instructions of Eloise Hawking, a woman who has intricate knowledge of time and space -- and the Island.
Meanwhile, the Island is randomly leaping through time, flinging Sawyer, Juliet, Daniel, Charlotte and all the others from one time period to another. And when the Oceanic Six (minus a few) arrive on the Island again, they find that it is now 1977 -- Sawyer, Juliet and their friends have all been living there for the past three years, as part of the Dharma Initiative. Sun and Ben end up in the hands of the remaining Others -- along with a supposedly dead man now returned to life.
But as the fateful Incident approaches, Jack and Co. end up having their plans unravel around them, and a bunch of gun-toting Dharma people out for their blood. With the help of Daniel Faraday and his mysterious journal, the splintered little group sets out to somehow reset everything that has happened on the Island -- even as Ben and the Others approach an ancient monument, where the Island's fate will be changed forever.
There's a sense of melancholy in the fifth season of "Lost." Okay, it's never been a cheerful show, but it's clear that many of the plot threads are being wound together, and the characters that are killed have wrenchingly tragic send-offs. What's more, this short season reveals a whole lot more about the Island than we ever knew before -- the stone foot, the Incident, Eloise Hawking's knowledge about time, and the Island's mysterious ruler Jacob.
And it's packed solid with plot, full of twists, gory action, flashbacks, flashforwards, and a sense of supernatural suspense. The first half of the season is all about the Six slowly being drawn back to the Island (almost against their will, really) while the second is about the disasters that ensue because of their presence, and the fight against the inevitability of time. It's just a big thick rope of plot twists that tightens itself as it approaches the explosive finale.
Fortunately this season is also graced with exceptionally good dialogue, and some funny moments often supplied by the ever-lovable Hurley (example: writing down the "Empire Strikes Back" script from memory). And it evolves into straight-out science fiction after sort of flirting with it for the past few seasons.
Matthew Fox does a pretty good job as the increasingly irrational, obsessed Jack, but he's overshadowed by Josh Holloway. Holloway is pretty darn brilliant as the new alpha male in the jungle who suddenly has his peaceful domain disrupted. Michael Emerson is also excellent as the vaguely creepy Ben, whose frustrations and anger start boiling over as he tries to somehow fix whatever has gone wrong, only to make a terrible mistake.
Actually, most of the cast does an excellent job: Naveen Andrews, Elizabeth Mitchell (especially in the finale), the dry-witted Ken Leung, Jeremy Davies, Yunjin Kim, Daniel Dae Kim, and the ever-awesome Jorge Garcia. There are also some other incredible actors who become pretty prominent here, including François Chau, Zuleikha Robinson, the ageless Nestor Carbonell, and the mysterious Fionnula Flanagan.
And Mark Pellegrino is introduced as the mysterious Jacob, whose identity, nature and goals are all murky. You're left wondering who this guy is, and if we'll see him again.
"Lost: The Complete Fifth Season" is a tightly-written, intensely-plotted stream of bittersweet sci-fi, and it leaves you hungry for whatever is next. Only one more season yet to go.

Without a Trace - Season One (2002) Review

(More customer reviews)Without a Trace focuses on the Missing Persons Unit of the FBI in New York City. This group of five headed by Jack Malone (Anthony Lapaglia) must find out who the missing person was to find out where they might be. They work backwards in time and forward in a race to find the missing person before 48 hours are up. Because after 48 hours chances of finding them alive are very slim.
This show is without a doubt one of the best on TV. I happened to stumble upon the reruns and was watching because I thought Anthony Lapaglia looked familiar. Of course I was thinking of Simon Moon from Frasier. By the time I could get my husband to confirm my suspicions I was hooked on this show. It is so well written and filmed that you can't watch and not become addicted.
The cast of this show is great. These five actors will make you forget your watching TV and make you believe your part of the team trying to solve the case. The writing is wonderful. In addition the way the show is filmed will leave you wanting more. I just can't say enough about this show. It has been awhile since I've been so excited about a TV show.
This DVD package is so great. The quality is excellent. And the extras are very entertaining. You go behind the scenes to learn how the show was developed and how the cast was picked. Then you can learn how the sets were made and discover that they actually have an ex-FBI man as an advisor to make the show look and feel real. This is just great. This shows the interest and pride the producers take in the show to go to the length of having an advisor help in making it real. I think this has a great deal to do with why the show is such a success and seems real.
This DVD is a must have for any fan of Without a Trace. It will provide some of the most entertaining hours on TV.

Alice Cooper - Live at Montreux 2005 (2007) Review

(More customer reviews)Let's face it. Alice Cooper has been about as far off the musical map as you can get since about 1976 or so.
But for me, "The Coop", as many of his fans called him back then, was a defining influence on my life.
I first discovered Alice as a teenager in the seventies. If it is your high school years that define who you will become in your adult life, the fact that Alice Cooper was my adolescent hero probably explains a lot.
You see, I discovered Alice completely by accident. I was 15 years old and had bought tickets to see The James Gang (Joe Walsh's first band) at the Paramount when word came down that they had cancelled the show. My options at the time we're either get my money back or exchange the tickets for another show. It just so happened that Alice Cooper was playing Seattle a few weeks later as part of the "Killer" tour.
To a lot of my rocker pals at the time, the fact that the guy's name was Alice was enough to convince them to stay far away.
Not me.
The only thing I really knew about Alice back then was that "I'm Eighteen" was a pretty damn decent rock tune, and that according to Circus Magazine he was known to rip up live chickens onstage.
Freak Show? Hell, yeah, at fifteen I was most definitely in.
For the next two years after seeing Alice Cooper that night--basically my entire time in high school--I listened to Alice Cooper every single day.
Although everybody from Kiss back then to Marilyn Manson now would basically devote entire careers to stealing his act, what I witnessed on the Killer tour that night was like nothing I had ever seen before.
The part that I was completely unprepared for--the staged hanging during the "Dead Babies/Killer" show finale--actually scared the [...] out of me. The fact that I was high at the time probably was a factor.
But for a minute I actually thought Alice Cooper was dead. That he had actually "suicided right on the stage", no doubt inspiring that line from a Rolling Stones song released a few years later.
When he reappeared for the "Desperado" encore in white top hat and tails tossing money from the end of a sword to the crowd, there was absolutely no doubt in my fifteen year old mind:
This was the coolest guy alive.
I was in my early thirities when I finally was able to meet my adolescent hero once I had made somewhat of a name for myself in the music business.
By that time, Alice's glory days we're long behind him. Sure, he still had the occasional hit. I think Alice's last big single was "Poison" in 1989. But his days as the biggest concert draw in the world we're pretty much over once he disbanded the original Alice Cooper Group a couple of years after the landmark Billion Dollar Babies album and tour.
Late last year, a DVD from that tour resurfaced. "It's Good To See You Again Alice Cooper" was a film document of that tour that enjoyed a brief run playing the midnight movie curcuit in the seventies before disapearing into nearly three decades of obscurity. The restored DVD reveals a couple of things. One, is that the old Alice Cooper Band was a gas to watch live. But also, that they basically could barely play their instruments (although I will give props to Neal Smith who was a magnificent double bass drummer). The other thing this DVD brings to light though, is that Alice himself was apparently so drunk most of the time that it's a wonder he made through those years alive.
Even so, his performance is absolutely riveting. And you really start to appreciate the impact Alice Cooper really had on future generations in terms of rock and roll stagecraft. The show is an absolute spectacle for it's time, with it's huge lighting towers, it's giant dancing toothbrushes, and of course it's guillotine. And Alice's apparent inebriation actually plays very effectively into his onstage character as he staggers about sneering at his audience and rubbing various props about his crotch area.
It's part of what made Alice...well, Alice.
Fast forward to 2006. Alice Cooper may no longer be selling out the Madison Square Gardens of the world, but he is still very much alive and kicking. In fact, Alice Cooper, once the poster boy for every parent's worst nightmare in the seventies, has become downright respectable. On his brand new DVD, recorded live last year at the Montreux Jazz Festival of all places, Alice Cooper is still doing very much the same theatrical shock rock spectacle he has always done.
But this is a stripped down model compared to the extravaganzas of the seventies. It's also very much a G-Rated version. Happily married (Alice's daughter actually plays several roles in the stageshow), and clean and sober for several years now, you won't find Alice grabbing his crotch or uttering so much as a dirty word in this new show. It's amazing what a few years of sobriety will do for a former raging alcoholic mega rock star.
What's amazing about this...aside from just how healthy Alice looks these days...is how much better he sounds. Fronting a band of young hot shots half his age that probably grew up listening to a lot of the songs they perform on this DVD, Alice looks like he could be a brother to these guys rather than their old man. His voice, always one of the great classic rock voices for my money anyway, has simply never sounded stronger.
For the menacing stage persona he perfected so many years ago, Alice no longer has to get by on charisma alone. Here, he prowls, rather than staggers, across the stage taking absolute command of every inch of it. With a razor sharp band that is as tight a unit as he has ever fronted, Alice Cooper rocks with the energy and intensity of a man thirty years younger than he actually is.
As I said, the theatrics are somewhat toned down. But this is after all, still Alice Cooper we're talking about here. He still gets the strait jacket treatment for "Ballad Of Dwight Frye", which he again sings as strongly as he did back in the Love It To Death Days. And of course he still gets the guillotine...still one of the coolest special effects stunts ever done on a concert stage...for the double shot of "Killer" and "I Love The Dead." The show is dotted with other classics from the considerable Cooper canon. "I'm Eighteen," "Schools Out," "Be My Lover," "Under My Wheels," and of course "Billion Dollar Babies" are all here.
As for the newer songs featured here? Well to be honest, there isn't anything here that is going to stick in my brain the way "I'm Eighteen" did the first time I heard it.
But I have to give Alice Cooper credit. He is still mining pretty much the same territory of teenage angst and rebellion that he did back in his heyday on the newer songs from recent albums like last years Dirty Diamonds. The difference is he is doing so with the benefit of wisdom that comes with both age and surviving more demons than either you or I would care to see in a single lifetime.
There's just something about Alice Cooper you gotta love. Even when he was battling those very demons and selling out the biggest arenas in the world, you always knew that deep down he was pretty much your basic All American God fearing Christian sort of good guy.
At least if you we're really listening.
So it really is good to see you again Alice Cooper.
Clean and Sober. Alive and Well. And doing your thing with an energy and vitality that would make most guys half your age positively green with jealous envy.

MTV's The Real World The Complete First Season - New York (2006) Review

(More customer reviews)The original and best (in my opinion) season of MTV's "The Real World" finally sees a DVD release! But beware... although everything you've seen involving Norm, Heather, Julie, Eric, Becky, Andre', and Kevin is here- the music has been rescored. I'm sure that getting the home video rights to all of the songs that were used when the show was originally aired would have been a logistical nightmare. If you want to relive Norm, Heather, and Julie roller skating to Cece Peniston's "Finally", you aren't going to see it here. You'll see them skating, and you'll see their lips moving to a song, but what you'll hear is some generic, instrumental song instead. If you want to relive Eric's ex-girlfriend Missy coming to visit him to the tune of Prince's "Diamonds And Pearls"... again, you're not going to see it on this DVD collection! The scene is there but the music is not.
Rescoring music for home video release has long been commonplace in the video industry. "Sixteen Candles" (the 1980's Molly Ringwald flick) had about half of its theatrical music deleted and replaced when it made it to video. The difference between that and this is that the "Sixteen Candles" video packaging offered a disclaimer: "Some of the music has been changed from the original theatrical version." There is no disclaimer on the "Real World" packaging. This is quite misleading.
If you can get past that (and I must admit... it does make a difference. The tone of the show has been changed somewhat, but it's still entertaining nontheless), you'll love this collection. The original pilot (featuring a different group of 7 strangers) is included, as well as a copy of Julie's acceptance letter. That is quite an interesting read for any "Real World" fan. The only thing that would have made this collection even better would have been commentary from the cast. Even if they couldn't have got the entire cast (Andre' has only been back for one reunion show), it would have been really interesting. Some outtakes and bloopers would have made nice extra goodies as well.
All in all... a decent collection for fans. Maybe MTV will get it right with the next season's DVD release.

Further Tales of City (2pc) (2001) Review

(More customer reviews)This release consists of two disks. The first features all four episodes of 'Further.' The second, which I have yet to watch all of, contains the extras (those that I have seen are very good).
My only problem with this release is that instead of screening all four episodes uncut, they have released them as a feature length movie.
In Britain 'More' was released on video in the same format. The result was that all the scenes at the start of each episode that had the cast/production credits on screen were cut so I, the viewer, missed out on a number of scenes. I haven't seen the TV version of 'Further' so cannot comment on whether this dvd version has cut some scenes due to the on screen credits or whether they have included these scenes minus the on screen credits. 'More' was released as six episodes back to back. 'Further' should have been released this way as well.
The production is classy although there are a few dodgy shots here and there, such as establishing shots of the ship spoilt by rain drops on the camera lens.
Viewers of 'Tales' and 'More' should enjoy this release. Viewers new to 'Tales of the City' will probably find the characters in 'Further' a bit cold and would be advised to watch the first two mini-series before watching 'Further'.
Its hard to believe that in 2003 the first mini-series will be ten years old. Lets hope it doesn't take ten years to see the last three books developed for televison.

The Pennsylvania Miners' Story (2002) Review

(More customer reviews)This made-for-tv movie is based on a real life incident in 2002, when nine Pennsylvania coal miners were trapped for three days when water flooded their mine. Partially shot at the Quecreek mine, where the accident happened, this movie is a realistic look at what the miners had to do to survive, as well as what their families went through while waiting for the miners to be rescued.
At just 90 minutes long, this is a fast paced and thrilling movie. The miners and their families are introduced in quick segments at the beginning of the movie and then the film moves right into the mine flooding and the miners struggle to say alive. The film alternates scenes in the mine with scenes of the miners families waiting at the fire hall for news of their loved ones.
The filmmakers do a good job filming the scenes with the trapped miners to the point where I felt claustrophobic watching some of the mine scenes. Even though I knew the miners all got out safely, I was on the edge of my seat watching them struggle in the water. The scenes with the families are, with one or two exceptions, emotional without being cloying.
I really enjoyed this movie and recommend it to fans of movies based on real-life events.

The Backyardigans: Robot Repairman (2009) Review

(More customer reviews)The robot repairman episode is the new favorite in our house. Great music, and definitely a fun movie for my kids (1 and 3). My son (3) asks to watch it every morning. The other two episodes on this disc are not that great, which is the reason for my 4-star review. Both episodes only have Tyrone, Pablo and Uniqua (missing Austin and Tasha) and they seem to fall flat. Overall though, definitely a good buy for Backyardigans fans!
**Robot Repairman: Austin is a robot repairman in Mega City. Together with Uniqua, Tasha and Tyrone, he must figure out why all the robots are suddenly malfunctioning. Set to disco music!
** Catch that Train: Uniqua is a train conductor moving the Czar to his winter home. She and Pablo must catch the runaway train before it's too late.
** 50 Foot Worman: Pablo and Uniqua are scientists at a university. Uniqua is studying wormen, and Pablo is working on a growth formula. When the two mix, they team up with Tyrone to shrink the worman.

My husband's relatives discovered DeathValley and I thought this would give the story of and a tour of Death Valley. It was all about how global warming is ruining everything in Death Valley. We did not like it for the most part, there were some interesting things to learn about, but it all went back to global warming. We would not recommend it.

Kingpin (2003) Review

(More customer reviews)This 6 episode (3 disk) series was made for and recently aired on network television, but in my opinion was quite successful in narrowing the distinction between traditional TV fare and far more graphic projects usually associated with pay cable offerings. It is the saga of a fabulously wealthy Mexican crime family presiding over a global drug cartel, and the 6 episodes define how the power of that family was violently consolidated under the quiet and cunning leadership of Miguel Cadena,(Yancey Arias). Much of what was done has been done before and inevitable comparisons to "The Godfather" are sure to be raised. But with a mostly Hispanic cast, cultural values usually associated as south of the border, and highly imaginative plot twists, this work is sometimes brilliant. The production values of this series more closely resemble that of film rather than episodic weekly television. With just 6 episodes in the can, I think the series ended a bit too soon, and this viewer was left wanting more.

Chasing Freedom (2004) Review

(More customer reviews)Having first hand experience with the US immigration system, I found a lot to relate to in Chasing freedom. Not that I'm in America to chase "freedom" with my situation nothing like the Afghan woman who is at the center of this movie, but like her, I do know what it is like to be caught up in an ineffectual bureaucracy that can take years to make immigration decisions.
For a television film Chasing Freedom is surprisingly well made and well acted, and it's themes, in this post 9/11 world, remains startlingly relevant. How does the United States keep the integrity of it's borders intact and keep out people who seek to do harm to Americans, whilst also welcoming those honest immigrants, who come to seek asylum? It's a tough call, and as this film shows, there are no easy answers.
Meena, the central character in Chasing Freedom is probably emblematic of thousands of refugees from war-torn parts of the world, who come to America, and other developed countries such as Australia, England, and Canada. In most cases their situation is pretty grim, because without resources of money and education, and a good immigration lawyer, many are deported back to their home countries.
Meena (Lela Alizada) is persecuted by the Taliban for running a school for young girls in Afghanistan. She manages to escape and ends up in detention in New Jersey. Her case seems hopeless -she has no money, no proof of identity and she's up against a hostile system that seems more concerned with finding ways to deport asylum seekers than offering them safe haven.
Reluctant help arrives in the form of a pro bono attorney Libby (played by Juliette Lewis) who unenthusiastically and grudgingly takes on her asylum case. Libby is a highflying securities lawyer, and immigration asylum is a foreign world to her. But her boss insists that she do this and a desperate immigration lawyer Eric (Brian Markinson) pleads with her to help him.
Libby's reaction is probably typical of most Americans who nothing about this world; because it's a world that they rarely need to enter. The movie shows quite well how, the lawyers must struggle to cope and make their voices heard within a department that is under-funded, where prejudice against "foreigners" is rampant, and which is overwhelmed by the shear number of immigrants seeking asylum.
As Libby gradually grows in awareness and learns about Meena's horrifying torture and subsequent escape from captivity, she begins to take pity on the girl, and becomes ever more determined to fight for her. One of the best scenes is when she goes up against a rather nonchalant and over-worked immigration judge, who lambastes her for not being fully prepared.
Both Juliette Lewis and Lela Alizada are excellent in their roles, and it's interesting to watch Lewis as Libby transform from a self-obsessed, flustered, and moneyed securities lawyer into a more empathetic and compassionate person, who believes in fighting for human rights.
The film was inspired by a real asylum case handled by a team of dedicated pro bono attorneys from Debevoise and Plimpton and The Lawyers Committee for Human Rights. It is a sobering depiction of the nearly insurmountable obstacles that asylum seekers face when they arrive in the U.S.
This film must see for anyone working with refugee communities, immigration law and ordinary Americans trying to make sense of the World Trade Center bombing and our subsequent response with the Patriots Act and Homeland Security. Mike Leonard September 05.

Best of the Bachelor (2002) Review

(More customer reviews)One complaint that I had with "Best Of Survivor Season One" was that it was a truncated, piece-meal version of the original series that cut out some of the most memorable scenes of the show, like Sue's infamous 'snake-eat-rat' tribal council speech. "Best of The Bachelor" showcases the series in its entirety as it was broadcasted (though somewhat edited for time) and features some never-before-seen bonus interview footage at the end of the tape. Even if you have never seen the show, the video will take you right from the tumultuous beginning all the way up to the climactic ending, no pun intended :) For fans of the show and other reality date-o-holics, this video is sure to please your palate.

Berle, Milton TV Show - Volume 1 (2007) Review

(More customer reviews)With the enormous number of channels now available on television and the large number of people that appear, it is hard for the modern viewer to think back to the early days of the medium. It was raw and unproven and Milton Belle was the first one to become a television superstar. His show, also called the Texaco Star Theater, owned Tuesday nights, at times 80% of the audience watched the show. He was so popular that some theaters and restaurants closed down when his show was on. On regular occasions there are stories in the media about a significant drop in water pressure after a popular show is over or during a commercial. The first recorded instance of this phenomenon was immediately after the Milton Berle Show was over. Berle is credited with being a force driving the sales of television and one point that he does not get enough credit for is his role in integrating television.
In 1950 he wanted the Four Step Brothers, a set of black tap dancers to appear on the show. He was told that they could not appear the precise phrase used was "We don't like them." To Berle's everlasting credit, he simply said, "If they don't go on, then I don't go on." It wasn't until ten minutes before the show started that Berle received permission to have them appear.
This disc contains two shows from his show, the first that guest starred Ronald Reagan was aired in 1948. The second was filmed at the Nellie Air Force Base outside Las Vegas in 1956 and appropriately guest-starred Zsa Zsa Gabor and the sensual French actress Denise Darcel. It was also appropriate that the Four Step Brothers appeared in the second episode, given Berle's role in getting them on television.
In the first episode Ronald Reagan contacts Berle to ask him to bankroll a picture. Berle thinks that Reagan is asking him to star in the picture so the comedy is all about the misunderstanding. The second features a couple of acts based on air force themes as well as the Four Step Brothers in an extended dance routine.
It is fitting that the first year of the Milton Berle Show was in 1948 and the last year was in 1956, so these two shows are in some sense bookends of the time of Berle's greatest popularity. There is no question that television would have become popular without Berle, yet he did more to make it that way than anyone else. He also should receive more credit for his actions in promoting black performers on television; at the time there was no one else with the star power to do it.
