Recently we received a promo code for a free DVD from the Redbox. When the "new releases" button was hit the first listing was "My Friend Rabbit: Hello Rabbit". The information section below stated it was a movie for pre-schoolers. Well, we are long past being pre-schoolers but with a movie starring a rabbit (and his name being "Rabbit") what bunny lover could resist renting it - especially since the price was right.
True to the blurb, "My Friend Rabbit" is definitely aimed at pre-schoolers, in the vein of "Sesame Street". It teaches young children the importance of respecting one another when playing together. Vocabulary words are introduced such as smart, puzzle, conundrum and humongous. A running theme through all five episodes is on solving problems by thinking them through together in a logical manner. This is accomplished by using Rabbit's best friend, Mouse, and Jasper the alligator, Thunder the slow-witted purple rhino, four young geese named Pearl, Amber, Jane and Coral, Beaver, and the Elephant (who is only in one segment).
In the first episode the gang deals with the problem of stopping the leaks in Beaver's dam. In the second, they learn that the moon can be reflected in still water. In the third, they figure out that everyone cannot be the leader at the same time. In the fourth, these lovable characters learn the futility of trying to catch a rainbow. And in the last episode they learn the importance of relying on their senses of touch, hearing and smelling to find their way in a dense fog.
The animation in "My Friend Rabbit" is more along the lines of a "Crusader Rabbit" cartoon than Walt Disney's "Who Framed Roger Rabbit", but still it is great fun to watch. There is a nice theme song that is played at the ginning of each segment that children can easily learn the words to and so sing along. Whenever Rabbit needs to do some deeper thinking, he "jump thinks" and "think hops", and each time his feet hit the ground it makes a funny "boing" sound. Rabbit has a contagous laugh and likes to act in a zaney manner when having a good time.
The stories are based on the book by Eric Rohmann My friend Rabbit. This is a great DVD for pre-schoolers and highly recommended as such. So, if you happen to obtain a Redbox promo code and "My Friend Rabbit: Hello Rabbit" is still among the listings, you might want to put a smile on your face by viewing it for yourself.

Baby Einstein - Baby Da Vinci - From Head to Toe (2004) Review

(More customer reviews)My first experience with Baby Einstein videos was almost four years ago with my first daughter. Who screamed every time we tried to show her it. I ended up giving it away.
Fast foward to this year. My second daughter, who's 16 months old, has some developmental delays. After chatting with moms of other babies with delays and hearing how much their kids enjoyed Baby Einstein videos, I decided to give it a second chance. After staring at them all at the store, I chose Baby Da Vinci, as it talked about body parts and one of the milestones my daughter hasn't hit yet was the pointing to body parts one.
Well, first viewing - my older daughter, who just turned four, sat down and watched it. The toddler showed vague interest...until the monkey puppets came on. I thought she wasn't paying attention to it then suddenly heard her laughing hysterically at the monkeys. After a few viewings, she fell in love. Even my older daughter wants to watch the "monkey video" as we call it. My toddler is now waving (something the monkeys do), something we couldn't do after literally months of us encouraging her to wave to us and showing her how to wave. I also notice that she's become more vocal since she first watched this video. (I have noticed she's a huge fan of music, so maybe it has something to do with the music?)
And one other bonus - my toddler was cutting molars and woke up just unconsolable one night. Finally after a half hour of her crying and nothing working, I turned on Baby Da Vinci - as soon as the catapillar came across the screen, she calmed down! Anyone who's ever been up with a really unhappy baby can appreciate that!

(More customer reviews)There are twenty episodes in all for this series, and this is the fourth DVD, each with four episodes. The fifth is due out in May, and you’d better believe I’ve already pre-ordered it.
The ones before this are "It's Great to Be a Ghost” (2005), "The Snow Fort” (2005), and "Polka Palace Party” (2006).
This DVD has the following episodes:
Cave Party: Set to a calypso beat, albeit a somewhat dated version of the genre. The friends go back in time to the Ice Age to howl at the moon, and invent some pretty useful things along the way.
Race Around the World: Not sure of the music genre here, but the friends take part in a tough race involving running through the jungle, snowboarding, kayaking across the ocean and hiking across the desert.
Eureka: A couple of crusty old prospectors and a couple of brilliant scientists join forces to find gold and dinosaur bones in them thar hills
Castaways: To a Bossa Nova beat, three castaways get a little help from a mysterious benefactor to survive on a deserted island.
Another excellent source of entertainment for kids and the adults who love them.Amanda Richards, March 23, 2006
