(More customer reviews)My wife bought this movie after seeing an ad on tv and thinking my 2 yr old son would like the cute little blue elephant. And he does. The animation is good and there are plenty of different characters although the story follows just one of them for 95% of the movie. I sat down and watched this all the way through only once with my son, as he's at the age where he can only handle 20 minutes of story line at a time (not helped by the fact all his tv shows are about 10 to 20 minutes an episode).
But once we got into the third act, things I thought got a little disturbing. There are a lot of war scenes towards the end, and throughout the whole story there are a lot of fights, teasing, slightly creepy images of red eyed monstrous elephants (the animation makes them look more like demons than elephants), and I basically felt uncomfortable with my two year old staring at it. I also didn't like the message about war being a necessary thing in society (actually I was quite shocked when they said that in a kid's movie supposedly about a cute blue elephant).
The bottom line is there's nothing about the cover of the DVD and the ads that depict what the movie is actually like. I'm not saying it isn't an enjoyable movie, but it might not be what you're expecting, especially after the first 5 minutes are all cute and cuddly and then it turns into a slightly scary film about war and death. I would watch it first as a parent before letting your child view it to gauge if it's something you feel comfortable letting your child watch.

Sharpe's Sword (2006) Review

(More customer reviews)One of my favorite Sharpe books and definitely one of the better adaptations, even though the action is transferred from Salamanca to the ficitious(?) Villafranca and the romantic subplot involving a novice nun is best forgotten. Sharpe is assigned the task of tracking down Colonel Leroux, who is after Wellington's chief spy, El Mirador - a task complicated by the fact that Sharpe isn't even told who El Mirador is. Sharpe must also contend with an old enemy returned and a traitor to be uncovered, even as he is gravely wounded during the assault on Villafranca, and hovers between life and death...
Sharpe's Sword is great from beginning to end - never skipping a beat, even if there is that annoying nun in the background. Sharpe, Harper and the rest of the supporting cast are in fine form, and a top-notch set of guest stars including Jack Spears, Father Curtis and Colonel Berkeley round it off. Leroux is suitably slimy and deadly, and the climatic sword fight one of the more brutal I've seen in the series. All this, and Sir Henry Simmerson (from Sharpe's Company) too. And of course, Harper dipping into grail lore by forging Sharpe a new sword out of loyalty and love. A must-watch.

Tommy Lee Goes to College (2005) Review

I surprised even myself when I tuned into this show. There was something about it that drew me in. I guess I tried to imagine Tommy Lee coming to my college when I was there and imagining how INSANE that would have been. Of course that was late 80s & early 90s when Motley Crue was REALLY POPULAR, but still.
Tommy Lee goes to classes, he struggles, his mind wanders, he gets a roommate, they play video games instead of study, he tries to join the band, struggles and then finds his niche and actually plays during the Nebraska Halftime show.
He gets a tutor and... YOWZA!! The tutor is a nice, cute, highly intelligent, brainiac named Natalie Reidman. She's such a looker, you wait around patiently for the moments in the episode when she comes back. Tommy Lee's no dummy. He needs lots of tutoring. Then it really gets good when this girl in one of his classes makes a move on him. I wondered when this was gonna happen.
Then the tutor and the classmate have a study clash.
Then Tommy Lee starts up a fraternity with his roommate. Pledges an Animal House looking bunch of goofballs and... then the season FINALE!!! WHAT!!
As much as it pains me to say it... I wanted more. I wanted more Natalie Reidman. I wanted more hijinks. I wanted to see REAL COLLEGE LIFE. Instead, we saw a scripted... just scratching the surface midseason time waster.
I had hoped that the DVD release would incorporate more episodes or longer episodes or more story, but apparently it is just the same episodes that aired. Frankly, without Natalie Reidman, the hot blonde tutor, I probably wouldn't have kept watching.
Every T.V. show, movie, song or concert sets out to accomplish something. In 6 episodes, Tommy Lee Goes to College accomplished NOTHING. It didn't show us real college life. You can't tell me that Tommy Lee went to Nebraska University for a semester and THIS was all that happened. Besides... in 6 months, all they got was a little over 2 hours of useable footage which was mostly scripted, staged, and mixed with special effects and music montages.
I'm sorry. I just wanted more. I wanted to see what REALLY happened. Not this sugar-coated, made for T.V., scripted bologna.
When it's all said and done, my entire 3 stars goes to Natalie Reidman, the hot blonde tutor, who we'll most likely never ever see again, because she's WAY TOO SMART to pursue any sort of acting career.
The show, on the other hand, was a starless stinker. It could have been great, if they'd chose to tell us THE REAL STORY and the WHOLE STORY!

As usual forces beyond his control lead him and us down many unexpected plot twist. (Sharpe's Gold) find Richard Sharpe once again entangle with a woman and up against cruel and truely evil men. This episode is an example of how the quality of ones heart can't always be judged by the fineness of one's clothing. (Sharpe's Battle) is truely just that. Sharpe must continue to battle both political and real foes as well as moral among his men when rumors arise of an English massacre of Irish in Ireland. (Sharpe's Sword) Is by far the best in this set. It's teaming with intriege and mystery. Who is El Mirador and can Sharpe protect him without knowing who he is? After a serious battle Richard also finds himself fighting for his life and the man he has come to protect my be his best chance to servive. This set ounce again show that Sharpe may not be a "gentleman" but he always is Honorable. Buy this set you'll enjoy every minute.

Sharpe's Battle (2006) Review

(More customer reviews)Sharpe's Battle is significant because of a couple of things - it is based on the only Bernard Cornwell Sharpe novel to be written while the series was in production, and in it Sharpe not only doesn't get the girl, he turns her down! It is 1813, and when Wellington is assigned the Spanish Royal Irish Guards, a motely bunch who have never fired a musket, he decides to rid himself of them by assigning them the hardest taskmaster he knows - Major Richard Sharpe. However, there are a couple of complications with Wellington's plan: one, Sharpe gets to actually *like* the Irish guards and wants to turn them into soldiers, and Sharpe is also the target of a vendetta by the villanous General Guy Loup, a Frenchman with a wolf fetish. Add to this mix the teetering marriage of Lord Kiely, the guards' commander, his sinister mistress Juanita, and reports of English atrocities in Ireland threatening to start a mutiny and you have the makings of a classic Sharpe adventure.
My main problem with the Sharpe TV series as a whole is that the budget doesn't really allow for the huge battles Cornwell describes. Where in the novel the action takes place in 1811 around the battle for Fuentes de Onoro, the TV version places it in a little town with no real consequence to the war at large. However, this is forgiveable because the acting and the dialogue is top notch. Even if the plot elements are predictable, you get a set of great characters, and even Lord Kiely is more three-dimensional than you initially give him credit for. And if you're a follower of the series, be prepared - one regular is going to bite the dust.

(More customer reviews)Although FotP has been off the air for a couple of months, I continue to watch my recordings of it. Every Wednesday morning college students and I would sit in my office and laugh our butts off at this terrific show. NBC simply didn't get it. Even though the ratings were low in its terrible time slot, rather than cancel FotP, why not try another night & time? It seems that unless it's so-called "reality" or violence, there's no place for clever, adult television. I still love "The Simpsons", but there were way more laughs in FotP then Simpsons have shown in a long time. So another entertaining show goes the way of Family Guy, Futurama, Firefly, Enterprise...while pandering dreck is allowed to remain. (How many people really found the highly promoted "Joey" funny? God, what boring tripe!) Perhaps it will live again on dvd. Let us hope.

In Sharpe's Regiment, both Sharpe and Harper find themselves being hunted down in London, while they try to crack down on a mysterious recruit shortage. In Sharpe's Siege, the rope tightens around Sharpe's neck, when he's surrounded in a castle with a small force against a large French force. In Sharpe's Mission, Sharpe risks his life to bring down a British officer, who kills the British and French. Great series and enjoy!
