Paul Weller: Hit Parade (2007)

First off- all credit to the marketing and genius behind this one. Jam packed full of Weller's videos from 1977 to last years solo record. Every great single video from the modfather is here on a double disc dvd housed in a sturdy booklike case- from in the city to my ever changing moods to his solo breakthrough Wildwood. Of particular interest is the solo videos- many unseen in the us. For the Weller fan this is a dream come true. My only complaint is leaving out the promo videos for boy who cried wolf and heavens above( a great song and video). Other than that you get it all including top of the pop tv performances from the Jam(basically mimed tv performances) most of the Style Council highlights minus the aforementioned songs and all his solo videos. Great tunes great style and class videos. Proof that Weller is king is displayed on 60+ videos spanning his entire career. This is essential and a pure pleasure to watch- truly inspiring!!!!!

This DVD shows some great behind the scenes stuff with the band and some good live performances, but there are no music videos or a "Jimmy Kimmel Live" performance as the back cover led me to believe. This disc is just so you can see what you're missing if you haven't been to one of their shows, but I would recommend it to a true fan.

Wow! THeese girls have talent like you can't find very often, anymore. They even play guitar, and write their own songs, but most of all they sing GREAT!!! Aly (Alyson Michalka) stars on a diney channel show called "Phil of the Future". A.J. (Amanda Joy Michalka) has reappearing roles and has guest-starred on many shows. I recommend buying their Album Into the Rush, also. On the concert DVD, there is behind the scenes footage, and several entertaining home videos from when the girls were younger.
They are Christians, and very nice people, which makes me like them even more.
BUY THIS AND THEIR ALBUM INTO THE RUSH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The work of Tom Petty is a uniquely-American blend of popand rock that has paid handsome dividends for the star over the years. With his faithful band The Heartbreakers behind him, Petty lit up stagesacross the country, and became an unlikely early star of MTV with some innovative video work. Ramones: It's Alive 1974-1996 (2007)
Average Reviews:

Pound for pound, this is one of the best live albums ever released. I bought it on import vinyl back in 1979 and it was one of the first CDs I bought upon upgrading my stereo system. The Ramones smoke through their set list like there's no tomorrow. Recorded on New Year's Eve in 1977 at the Rainbow Theatre in London, this set sounds much better (probably because of Tommy's co-producing) then the recently released "Ramones - NYC 1978" CD which was recorded at The Palladium in New York City just a week later. It also includes "Judy Is A Punk" which is absent from the NYC show. All in all, a must have CD for any Ramones fan. 2 notes to Tod Nelson : it was Dee Dee (not Joey) who shouted out "1,2,3,4!!!" before each song and this CD clocks in at just under 54 minutes not 48 (you may have been cheated). R.I.P. Joey, Dee Dee, and Johnny.

Punk forefathers Joey, Johnny, Dee Dee, Tommy, Marky, Richie, and C-Jay Ramone outlasted almost every one of their legions of followers. For over twenty years, they delivered their signature garage-flavored, ear-shattering chainsaw level and pop-skewed sound through a string of now-classic, loud-and-fast punk rock LPs, and 2,263 concerts together. This new two DVD set captures the essence of the legendary racket they made with over four hours of rare and previously unreleased live footage that's the closest you can get to experiencing this blitzkrieg of a band. From their earliest performances at lower Manhattan's CBGBs to international festivals in front of hundreds of thousands of fans, IT'S ALIVE 1974-1996 is your VIP ticket to the Ramones.Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002, the band may be gone, but their sound and influence are indestructible.

The price is right for this nice collection of videos from Audioslave, the super group featuring Chris Cornell of Soundgarden with Rage Against the Machine (minus Zack de la Rocha).
This DVD is worth getting alone for the "Show Me How To Live" video which cleverly samples the vintage '70s car chase film, Vanishing Point. MTV has yet to show this video -- they may have banned it because of the ending of the video -- and so this may be your only chance to get a really good copy of it.
Also included on the disc are the videos for "Cochise" (awesome video for this rockin' tune) and "Like A Stone." There is also bonus concert footage from when the band performed on Letterman ontop of the marquee of the Ed Sullivan theater.
If you're a fan of the band then this is a must-have item.

Here is the break down:
There is a total of 11 songs on this DVD: The songs include: "want, conflict, stupify, Fear, voices, droppin plates, Shout 2000, Down with the sickness, the game ", **plus** Bonus: "perfect insanity", and "A welcome Burden". Some of the footage is videos some is live performances. All songs on here are NOT clips, all these are full, and uninterupted. On both the videos and live performances, the sound and picture are very good qaulity. This was deffinitly made for DVD. Only complaint in this area is some of the older footage of the band is grainy, VHS quality, But the good thing is they do not show too much of this footage in the video. 95% of the video quality is awsome, and sharp. Besides music, they have plenty of backstage antics, and partying, similar to pantera's DVD. They also tell the orgin of Disturbed and do Bio's on each member, plus each member tells stories. It is a very well rounded DVD, it covers all corners. It is reasonably priced too. Ive watched this 3 times, so there may be even more hidden things on here that I have not yet discovered (although i think i got them all), but I can tell you it is over 2 1/2 hours of entertainment, plus after you have watched all the backstage footage and get tired of that they have an option to just play the songs on the DVD (unlike pantera's DVD). Enjoy!

We Rock (2005) Review

We Rock (2005)

The previous reviewer of this disc is correct with his song listing, and so,the two programs being reissued on this disc("A Special From The Spectrum" recorded in Philadelphia and "Live '83",recorded in Utrecht,Holland) are NOT being reissued complete, with "Stand up and Shout" omitted from the Philadelphia concert, and a 20 minute version of "Heaven & Hell" being omitted from the Utrecht show. When I buy a DVD reissue of a program that I've already owned on VHS or Laserdisc, then, ideally,I'd like to get extra songs and supplemental material, but,at the very least,I want to get the original program complete.Although it's true that the song contents of the two concerts overlapped, that's no excuse for dropping songs.I wonder if it was Ronnie James Dio's decision,or merely a stingy record company trying to save money by reducing the payout of mechanical royalties. This DVD is a deplorable rip-off,and useless as an upgrade to fans who already own the complete, uncut programs via previous VHS or Laserdisc releases. This release is an import from Universal Music(who has the non-U.S. rights on the 1980's DIO recordings). Let's hope that Rhino & Warner Brothers(who have the U.S. rights) never release these edited versions of the programs.Oh well,I guess I'll transfer my vintage VHS of the Spectrum concert and my Japanese Laserdisc of the Utrecht concert onto DVD-R.Because this is a virtuoso heavy metal group with substantial amounts of improvisation from the guitarist & drummer,no two performances of a song are identical.A slight overlap in song contents between the Philadelphia & Utrecht shows is NOT a justification to omit the "redundant" songs.Though "Stand Up & Shout" & "Heaven and Hell" were included in both shows, they were hardly identical renditions. This DVD should be taken off the market. Please Rhino & Time-Warner:Spare U.S. fans from this travesty, and NEVER release these edited programs in America.DIO fans:You've been warned about this worthless product.

VH1 Storytellers - Billy Idol (2001)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Billy Idol rules. I have been a diehard fan for 21 years, since I was 13. I saw him 3 times in the '80s-'90s and have been back for more 3 times in the new millenium. Billy rocks as hard as ever and his music is as fresh and exciting today as it was when it was written.
This DVD is a must-own for anyone with even a passing Idol fancy. The sound is superb, the band is tight and exhilarating, and Sir William is in fine form, rocking out in excellent voice and looking terrific. He is a fantastic storyteller with a great sense of humor. You feel, watching and listening to him spin his tales, that you've gone round the pub with him for a pint. He is thoughtful, intelligent, and really funny.
Although every single song on this DVD is amazing and sounds wonderful in this setting, two deserving special mention are the Gen X classics "Kiss Me Deadly" and "The Untouchables". Billy introduces "Kiss Me Deadly" by explaining how the song came to be and his heartfelt delivery is truly touching. These two songs are so dear to him (and me) and witnessing his performance of them brought a tear to my eye.
It is a testament to the man and his music that every single song sounds so vibrant in this stripped down setting. And Steve Stevens is nothing short of brilliant.
Don't wait - order this via "1-click" immediately! And Billy - we want more, more, more!

U2 Live at Red Rocks: Under a Blood Red Sky (2008) Review

U2 Live at Red Rocks: Under a Blood Red Sky (2008)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It's hard to believe it's been over 20 years since "Blood Red Sky" was filmed. As a couple of other people have posted who were there, it was an amazing event. It felt historic even at the time.
Although the weather is exactly why it's so dramatic with the fog and steam, the entire show was very nearly cancelled because of the conditions. Like one guy mentioned, it was about 35 degrees out at Red Rocks that night, after a full day of cold drizzling rain.
I was the music editor of the local alt.weekly paper at the time, and had been in on some meetings announcing the filming. Barry Fey, the concert's promoter, had been a very early supporter of U2 and booked them into a small 1400-seat theater in Denver when they first toured the US for "Boy." So they liked Fey and wanted to work with him for this Red Rocks gig.
Unfortunately it got cold in the days before the concert. They actually did officially cancel it -- both The Alarm and U2 agreed to play a second, make-up concert the next day in a local arena (DU, I think, or maybe Regis University). But they decided to do the Red Rocks performance anyway because they'd invested so many thousands of dollars for the shoot -- the pyrotchnics (there are normally no fires atop the dramatic sandstone rocks around the stage!), the camera equipment, the technicians.
I'm sure if the filming hadn't been planned, the performance would have been cancelled in a second. I don't remember if the show as sold out (I kind of doubt it), but in the 9,000-seat amphitheater, only about 3,000 people showed up for the filming. The movie does a great job of making it seem like a full house.
It's to Bono and U2's credit that they came out roaring, and to all music fans' benefit that this performance was caught on camera.
I alternated between the 5th row in the middle and the 2nd row over to stage left, and was in awe of what was going on on the stage. U2 simply took it over and made it their own showcase gig, as if they were playing an audition for entrance into heaven. Everything was (I'm sure) unscripted, including the bit with the flag and bringing the girl on stage. It was all natural, just like the setting.
This was just at the point, as some writers have mentioned, where the band was evolving from cult status to superstardom, and they were just hitting their stride.
One thing, though: their performance was hot, but not hot enough to help you forget the cold -- I froze my butt off that night!
As for why no DVD, I wonder how much of it is because of licensing and ownership rights. I don't even know if TTS, the Denver-based production company that managed the shoot, exists anymore. So I wonder who owns the rights to the film.
Perhaps U2, and maybe they don't want it on DVD ultimately because of the made-for-TV audio and video quality.
I happened to stumble on this series of reviews and I'm glad I stopped to read everyone's comments. It brought back a lot of memories, and made me want to root around my basement for my promotional copy of the film from TTS!

Frank Zappa: Dub Room Special (2005) Review

Frank Zappa: Dub Room Special (2005)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been waiting for this release since it contain the only official performance of Zappa/Mothers in 74 (from the "A Token of his Extreme" show). I have seen it twice and I have to admit I'm quite dissappointed since there's no improvement on the vintage footage and the extra material it's absolutely useless (Moon Valley feature, discography,...). This is the SAME VHS or Beta(max) we all ordered from Zappa's mail order service back in the 80's, but packaged under a DVD mask.
Most of the tracks from 1974 and 1981 are edited, cut and/or mixed with additional images. Also there are lots of "noises" added to some tracks. Bootleggers who used to offer the 1974 performance must be very happy with this edited video.
I wish they had included a CLEAN, FULL and CONTINOUS live performance at KCTTV Culver City Studios on 08/07/1974 with Zappa / Mothers and SEPARATELY the 10/31/1981 New York Halloween Party concert at the Palladium. Also they could have put as a worth - having extra "The Amazing Mr Brickford" video (the man behind those great clay animation).
If you want an in deep review, here is:
- (1974) DOG BREATH (VARIATIONS) / UNCLE MEAT
Uncomplete: no intro. and there's fade at the end. Original film is heavily distorted with additional images (mostly from Brickford), video effects and external "noises". Nevertheless you can see for brief moments Frank playing drums with Ruth Underwood (former Ruth Kammanoff)
- (circa 1974) PORTIONS OF MR BRICKFORD: Formerly shown on Baby Snake VHS / DVD
- DIALOGUE AT COMPACT VIDEO (the place where this video was made)
- (1974) ROOM SERVICE
Uncomplete: Maybe introduction is lost and there's CUT at the end. This is a classic Zappa talking - number. Just listen to that funky back up rhythm by Fowler, Duke, Underwood & Thompson.
- (1981) NIG BIZ Uncomplete.
- DIALOGUE AT COMPACT VIDEO
- (1974) APPROXIMATE
Perfect. Complete number. Zappa at his most DADA / Experimental phase. Simply great.
- (1974) COSMIK DEBRIS
Right after Approximate comes this number which is sadly cut and glued to Cocaine Decision
- (1981) COCAINE DECISION
Uncomplete number. It's mixed with video images of Massimo Bassoli a man supposed to be funny. Not for me.
- (1982) MASSIMO BASSOLI IN PALERMO / DIALOGUE AT COMPACT VIDEO
- (1974) MONTANA: Introduction is lost. Seriously cut at the end.
- (1982) MASSIMO BASSOLI - SINGLE: Useless.
- DIALOGUE AT COMPACT VIDEO
- (1974) FLORENTINE POGEN
Beginning of original broadcast is mixed with images at Compact Video. Cut before the number really ends. Edited Frank speech "Thank you. Chester's Gorilla was played by Marty Perellis"
- STEVIE'S SPANKING: This is an edited number from a longer one.
- DIALOGUE AT COMPACT VIDEO
- (1974) STINK FOOT
Introduction is lost. Heavily mixed with Mr Brickford clay animation and finally cut and glued to 1981's Flakes.
- (1981) FLAKES: Uncomplete number.
- (1974) INCA ROADS
No introduction. Mixed with Mr Brickford clay animation which at the same time is overdub with studio "noises". The main part of this number was used for "One Size Fits All" album (except guitar solo). Parts of this number were broadcasted on The Midnight Special TV show back in the 70's.
- (1981) EASY MEAT: Uncomplete
- DIALOGUE AT COMPACT VIDEO

Previously released on VHS and Beta and only available through mail order, Frank Zappa’s Dub Room Special is an extremely rare TV special comprising two live performances from one of Rock’s great individuals.Zappa’s unparalleled abilities as a composer, guitarist, and absurdist/social commentator run rampant on The Dub Room Special - and it is a unique window on his willingness to push the envelope of what is possible no matter how improbable.Selections from two separate concerts, one, called A Token of His Extreme, shot in 1974 at Los Angeles public television station KCET and one in 1981 filmed at his annual New York Halloween show, are interspersed with then-cutting edge claymation/stop motion animation from Bruce Bickford and assorted comedy bits.Since 1966, Zappa had established himself as perhaps the most fearless musician known to popular music. He incorporated modern classical music, blazing rock and blues and doo wop, guitar solos he called "air sculpture" and an extremely cynical point of view to forge a legacy that remains completely unique 12 years after his death.

Ramones - Raw (2004) Review

Ramones - Raw (2004)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Before I put Ramones Raw in the DVD player I thought it might seem bittersweet to watch, what with three of the band members now deceased. But instead of making me feel sad, the footage only made me happy that the world ever got to experience this thing called Ramones in the first place.
The DVD contains five hours' worth of footage, including concert footage from 1980 to 1996, clips of television appearances (Howard Stern and Uncle Floyd), their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and "I, Ramones," a concert shot in Italy.
With exception to concert footage, most of what we see was shot by Marky Ramone on his Super 8 camera. Apparently Marky was determined to capture life on the road for the band and it is his behind-the-scenes footage that makes this DVD worthwhile. The title is appropriate as some of what you see is indeed raw, and it gets a bit confusing at times because things aren't in chronological order.
Some of the more interesting footage includes the band's van being mobbed by screaming and fanatical fans much like the Beatles in "A Hard Day's Night," and Johnny sarcastically giving tour manager Monte Melnick a hard time anytime things get chaotic: "Really well organized, Monte. Nice job." Not.
We also get to see the usually stoic Johnny actually laugh and joke as well as sobering evidence of Dee Dee's physical and mental decline from drug use as we see clips of a youthful and vibrant Dee Dee and a hardened and somewhat narcissistic one. There are also lots of shots of the boys sitting on the toilet, which they themselves find hilarious.
Joey appears to be an easy-going, laid back guy who gets along well with everyone. But the footage suggests, as has been reported since Johnny's death, that he and Johnny did not get along very well after Johnny stole his girlfriend. We don't see the two fight or bicker. Instead, they simply and quietly avoid each other.
Diehard fans of Joey, Johnny, Marky and Dee Dee won't be disappointed with this one. It's a lively snapshot into the life of four ordinary guys whose impact on music was anything but ordinary.

I loved Nicole Sullivan in MAD TV and she made a perfect transition to "Rita Rocks". With my schedule (like Rita's, evidently), I didn't get to see all of the episodes, so I'm looking forward to watching the whole shebang again on the DVD set. Though sometimes predictable (like most sitcoms), the acting is never pretentious and everyone is a pleasure to watch. A great series to unwind with at the end of the day!

Nicole Sullivan ( MADtv ) stars as Rita Clemens, an overworked wife, mother, and former lead singer of a Bangles cover band who has traded in a life of jam sessions and rock clubs for carpools and PTA meetings. On the verge of a full-blown identity crisis, Rita struggles to maintain romance with her husband, Jay (Richard Ruccolo, Two Guys and a Girl ), juggle the demands of her 9-year-old daughter, Shannon (Kelly Gould, Lucky Louie ), and discipline her defiant teenage daughter, Hallie (Natalie Dreyfuss, He s Just Not That Into You ) and her ever-present boyfriend, Kip (Raviv Ullman, Phil of the Future ). In an attempt to reconnect with her youth and with the hopes of putting some spark back in her life, Rita dusts off her guitar and forms a garage band with Kip, her nosy postal carrier Patty (Tisha Campbell-Martin, My Wife and Kids, Martin ) and her unemployed neighbor Owen (Ian Gomez). The band should demand a refund from the company they hired to make this DVD.
Sound: For about half the concert I was wondering what was up with the sound. Then the camera panned way back, and I saw the mic hanging from the ceiling. Yup, it appears that they just put a mic in the audience and recorded the sound that way. Certainly sounds like it. Yes, this disc "features" DTS, but for the first time that I've encountered, DTS sounds significantly WORSE than Dolby 5.1. To top it off, the 5.1 is mostly name only - it doesn't seem that much effort was actually made separating sounds that should be on the left from those on the right, or in the back, etc.
Why did they not go through the mixing board for the sound? I can't even begin to imagine. For those that wrote that there is nothing wrong with the sound, it is just the way a live show sounds, compare the sound of this disc to an excellent live DVD, such as Metallica's S&M, or U2's all that you can't leave behind. You can capture sound from a live concert, and not have the end product a muddy mess.
Worse than the sound, however, was the complete lack of care that the producers took to capture the feeling of the concert. I highly doubt they had even been to a show before they filmed. It looked like they were trying to make a music video, a bunch of sweeping shots, weird angles, etc. Except that they managed to universally miss the points of interest. You would hardly know that there were pyrotechnics, video displays or anything else in the concert. Looking at the other music stuff Image Entertainment has done (Tribute to Brian Wilson, Doors VH1 special, the Who live) is it really any surprise that they had no idea how to capture this concert?
And special features? What? Interviews, road videos, behind the scenes, interviews with the director of the concert, music videos, etc. Don't waste your time looking for them. They ain't here.
Worst of all, this disc completely failed to capture the essence of the concert. NIN's "and all that could have been" practically bleeds emotion (perhaps this is an unfair standard for other DVD's to live up to) but Godsmack's bleeds blasé. There is no emotion, there is no attempt made to tailor this concert to Godsmack. Had any other band been up there, I get the sense it would have been filmed and edited exactly the same.
I like the band, but this DVD is not worth the money.

This DVD should be used in video production classes...as an example of how NOT to mix video!
Every trick in the book is thrown at a pace nobody could possibly like or enjoy. It is a dizzying ridiculous production. Unfortunately it completely spoils any hope of enjoying this DVD. What is the point of all the blurry shots, ridiculous close-ups and sweeps? It is amateurish as it can possibly get. What a shame. This is not a matter of taste, this is just plain BAD. Again, of the 60+ music concert DVDs I own, this disc by far has the worst video production.
I mean the crime is huge. Joss is having a great set. Her band is cooking. The bass player and drummer are great...setting a sweet pocket groove for the rest of the players to glide on. The background singers sound good (although the video shows clearer shots and more footage of them than Joss! Huh?). The crowd is diggin it. Joss is giggling like a schoolgirl at how much fun she is having. The vocals are soulful and inspired.
But the &%*%#@ video producer killed the disc. I can't even watch it after the first few songs; I had to turn my TV off. Again, what a crying shame. They robbed everyone of what could have been a great keeper 5-star disc.
I guess we will all have to wait for Joss' Austin City Limits set to come out on DVD. They just started producing some of their sessions. The Susan Tedeschi one is excellent.
