Rita Rocks: The Complete Season One (2008) Review

Rita Rocks: The Complete Season One (2008)

I loved Nicole Sullivan in MAD TV and she made a perfect transition to "Rita Rocks". With my schedule (like Rita's, evidently), I didn't get to see all of the episodes, so I'm looking forward to watching the whole shebang again on the DVD set. Though sometimes predictable (like most sitcoms), the acting is never pretentious and everyone is a pleasure to watch. A great series to unwind with at the end of the day!

Nicole Sullivan ( MADtv ) stars as Rita Clemens, an overworked wife, mother, and former lead singer of a Bangles cover band who has traded in a life of jam sessions and rock clubs for carpools and PTA meetings. On the verge of a full-blown identity crisis, Rita struggles to maintain romance with her husband, Jay (Richard Ruccolo, Two Guys and a Girl ), juggle the demands of her 9-year-old daughter, Shannon (Kelly Gould, Lucky Louie ), and discipline her defiant teenage daughter, Hallie (Natalie Dreyfuss, He s Just Not That Into You ) and her ever-present boyfriend, Kip (Raviv Ullman, Phil of the Future ). In an attempt to reconnect with her youth and with the hopes of putting some spark back in her life, Rita dusts off her guitar and forms a garage band with Kip, her nosy postal carrier Patty (Tisha Campbell-Martin, My Wife and Kids, Martin ) and her unemployed neighbor Owen (Ian Gomez). RITA ROCKS: THE COMPLETE SEASON 1 features all 20 episodes plus extras jam-packed onto 3 discs!

Angels Fall (2007) Review

Angels Fall (2007)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Angel's Fall", based on a book written by Nora Roberts, is an engaging movie that is likely to entertain you, and that has enough ingredients of a good thriller to keep you at the edge of your seat.
The main character is Reece (Heather Locklear), a young woman that survived a massacre in her Boston restaurant and has been running from what happened, never settling too long anywhere. Despite that, she decides to settle at least for a little while in a small but very beautiful Wyoming town, Angel's Falls. Reece gets a job at a diner, manages to make some new friend and even meets Brody (Johnathon Schaech), a handsome writer she is somewhat attracted to, even though he irritates her. Unfortunately, Reece's luck doesn't hold, and she ends up witnessing from afar what seems to be a murder. But did Reece really saw a crime, or is she so traumatized by what happened to her in Boston that she is imagining things?
If you are interested in knowing what happened and how things develop between Reece and Brody, simply watch this movie. Truth to be told, it is different from the book on which it is based, but nonetheless good enough on its own to be worth watching. That is the reason why I give this movie 3.5 stars out of 5. Acceptable Risk (2001) Review

Acceptable Risk (2001)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Robin Cook is the prolific author of several medical thrillers, in which medicine goes wrong, and the hero/heroine have to face the dire consequences. In ACCEPTABLE RISK, we are introduced to the story via a 1709 hanging of a woman suspected of being a witch. In fact, twelve of these damsels hung that day. Fast forward to the future and we meet idealistic Dr. Chad Rowe, and his lovely wife, Kelly Rutherford who have just inherited the house of the long dead witch. While renovating the house, Lowe discovers a shimmery mold and takes it to his lab, and finds out it has some unusually powerful capabilities: it intensifies his emotions, and seems to cure brain damage such as in Alzheimers. He secretly starts ingesting the formula he's made from the mold, called Ultra, and starts experiencing some of these effects. Needless to say, things start going wrong, and then he decides to enlist other team members to come up with a viable potion.
Lowe and Rutherford do well in their roles, Rutherford looking like a young Judith Light, and Lowe a young Rob Lowe. (Ha ha). Add Sean Patrick Flannery as friend Bobby, who seems to have been a little loose cannon anyway, and you have the ingredients for medical mayhem.
This is a made for TV movie, but its production values are good and I found it intriguing and entertaining.

Mary Higgins Clark: Pretend You Don't (2002) Review

Mary Higgins Clark: Pretend You Don't (2002)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The pattern of the previous films of this series by Ms Clark is partly broken. The main character is not a radio anchorwoman but a female real estate agent. We are not dealing here with a serial killer but with a real hit man hired by a dirty soiled trafficker who appears slightly ambiguous because his secular but not criminal boss, who he cheats, is Italian, or has some kind of an Italian name. But it does not have anything to do with the mafia. The whole business is a cover up operation for a first murder that the police sloppily classified as being an accident. There the pattern is not broken. The police is still sloppy. What's more the police does not succeed where a simple woman, by taking risks and using her intelligence, baits the hit man and the rotten egg out of the basket in which they were hiding. The suspense is OK though of course we know from the very start what the stakes are and we are only missing the name of the man who is ordering these murders. The police will arrive just on time when it is needed not to get into more complicated business. And yet the whole film is built around a leak in the police protection of the main character and we will never know how this leak happened and where it came from. The police is always sloppy with Ms Clark, but Ms Clark is also sloppy on some basic logical elements.

I remember seeing this a while ago and it was a kick seeing Joanna Kerns (sexy actress indeed), play a total bitch. It was a nifty little dark cracker, but I have recently bought the dvd release and I noticed that cuts were made for some mild flashes of nudity; simply Joanna's backside getting up. I know it was a tv film, but that's no excuse for these cuts, and it means the censors still treat everyone like kids. It's not good enough. I'm not keeping the film. I want to, but I refuse. I am sick of these censors. Release the film properly will you! It deserves better and it ruined it for me!

This, above all other seasons of Oz, has been on my want list for some time. Finally it will be here. I am a HUGE fan of actor Brian Bloom and Christopher Meloni. And to see them together in the series makes me happier than you can believe. The Keller/Beecher storyline is admittedly my favorite, and it is in season four that so much happens in that development. And who else is there to bring about more drama into their lives? Why none other than blue eyed Brian Bloom, that's who. Though the other storylines running are very interesting also, I'd recommend this DVD set to anyone just on the Keller/Beecher/Barlog storyline alone. It has a lot of meat and heart attatched to it. Please don't miss out on this fantastic DVD!

What Girls Learn (2001) Review

What Girls Learn (2001)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This movie is cliche and tedious--with a storyline and dialogue reminiscent or an after-school special. Scott Bakula and Elizabeth Perkins are always good, and their performances salvage a rather unconvincing film.
The major flaw in this movie is the central focus on the daughter, Tilden. I suppose the intention was for us to empathize first with her difficulties getting used to a stepfather--and later--with her mother's breast cancer. But this homely little girl is mean, nasty and hostile from start to finish to almost everyone. There are many "teen angst" movies, but they somehow find a way to make the character likeable--or help the audience identify with her plight. With this film you spend two hours waiting for "what girls learn" to include someone teaching this girl to stop being such a selfish, self-centered brat. I am sure this was not the intent of the director of this film, but this little girl's sour look and bad behavior kept me from buying into this story--or caring about her situation.

Another reviewer said that she did'nt regret watching this film. I did. I have always admired actors like Kelly Martin and a few others who refused to lower themselves to Hollywood's sleazy standards. This is the only movie I've seen where Ms. Martin compromises and allows herself to do a sleazy, sensual scene. There may have been more sleazy scenes in this movie but I wouldn't know because after the first one I popped the dvd out and tossed it on my "discard" file...and I said to myself "another Hollywood actress who use to enforce some measure of discretion has caved in to the relentless pressure, from Hollywood directors, to compromise one's standards." Too bad!

Mary Higgins Clark: Loves Music Loves (2001) Review

Mary Higgins Clark: Loves Music Loves (2001)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Loves Music, Loves to Dance is a suspenseful little mystery, slightly reminiscent of 2001's Valentine, but much better at delivering thrills. Mary Higgins Clarke, America's Queen of Suspense, has crafted a terrific tale of murder, full of twists and turns which lead to an edge-of-the-seat and surprisingly non-violent finale.
While the low budget does hurt the film (the stock footage of NY is painfully horrible), and Patsy Kensit tends to overact quite a bit, the real winner here is the story, a twisted tale which takes a stab at the dangerous side of the world of online dating. The film does get cheesy at parts, especially when we see the 'killer' alone in his studio, talking to himself and dancing with the corpses of the women he has killed. These scenes could have been handled a lot more maturely and have had a creepy feel to them had they been done right, but it comes across as B-movie bad in this. However, that is a small part to a top-notch mystery and its unexpected ending. This is definitely the best of six Lions Gate DVD releases of the Mary Higgins Clarke Made-For-PAX-TV mystery movies.

Sex and The Single Mom (2003)

Usually, in stories like this, a teenage girl gets careless, becomes pregnant, and has to hide it from her mother. But here, it's the mother who gets careless, becomes pregnant, and has to hide it from her daughter! The aforementioned (single) mother has been discouraging her teenage daughter from becoming sexually active, while carrying on a wild, secret affair with a married man. When she becomes pregnant and her lover abandons her, she has to face her own hypocrisy. This film is a cut above most made-for-Lifetime-TV movies, thanks largely to Gail O'Grady's performance as the mother - she's always luminous and likable, even when some might question her behavior. Credit must also go to Danielle Panabaker as the daughter.

Like mother, like daughter? When it comes to romance, single mom Jess Gradwell and her 15-year-old daughter Sara may have a lot more in common than they think. Intrigued by a hunky heart surgeon, Jess falls hard into a possibly unwise affair. At the same time, Sara is discovering her own longings and perhaps acting unwisely about a boy at school. Emotions are on edge in the Gradwell household. Jess and Sara clash over sexuality and morality. Then Jess makes a decision that will change both of them forever.

Oz: The Complete Fifth Season (2001) Review

Oz: The Complete Fifth Season (2001)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
What is it that makes HBO's ultra volitale men in prison drama Oz such compulsively addictive viewing? Perhaps it's the layers of storylines being told over one another, perhaps it's the fact that this is one of the finest ensemble casts ever assembled, or, possibly, because one is so shocked at what is seen on screen that they anxiously, or dreadfully, await to see just who gets shanked next or what else develops. Whatever the case, Oz remains one of the best shows to ever grace HBO, and one of the most underrated. The fifth season of Oz begins with the aftermath of the kitchen fire, followed by the power control triangle between Tobias Beecher (Lee Tergesen), white supremiscist leader Vern Schillinger (J.K. Simmons), and Kareem Said (Eamon Walker). In the meantime, the mother of Ryan and Cyril O'Reilly (Dean and Scott William Winters) comes to the prison to teach the prisoners of performance arts, while a few inmates train some dogs to be guides for the blind. Of course not all of this ends well at all, but what else would you expect while taking a trip down this blood soaked yellow brick road? Standout performances from Tergesen, Simmons, Walker, the Winters brothers, Kirk Acevedo, B.D. Wong, Ernie Hudson, Terry Kinney, and the rest of the usual suspects are highlights here, but it's Law & Order: SVU's Christopher Meloni who steals the show as Beecher's psychotic lover Keller, who has coming agendas of his own. By the time season five comes to a close, it is apparent that the end is soon near, and by the time it reaches it's climax, you'll be begging to see how it all comes to an end.

I saw this one when it first came out (on Lifetime) and am delighted it is finally available on video/Dvd. Thora Birch does an exceptional job playing a girl whose family life is chaotic (her mother is a drug addict, her father is mentally ill).
She's the butt of jokes at school because she has had no training in normal social behanvior and her home is so cluttered and messy that finding clean clothes to wear is a major challenge.
Somehow she manages to rise above her circumstances, beating the odds and going to Harvard. Credit the filmmakers for being honest and staying away from saccharine solutions. THis is a gritty but riveting film. A must-have in my colletion..should be in yours.
