Ancient Mysteries - The Lost Ark of the Covenant (2005) Review

Ancient Mysteries - The Lost Ark of the Covenant (2005)

Although I am not a historian, I am very interested in ancient history, especially about religions. I borrowed this DVD from a library and it did not meet my expectation. It revealed whereabouts of the lost Ark and most people were looking for it in Jerusalem. Actually, it is in totally unexpected location with fantastic assumptions. I won't reveal it as it will ruin your interests. However, I want to question that if we can go to Mars and other planets in the Space but why can't we go inside of that place to see whether it is the "real" lost Ark. And the keeper of that place should share the Ark of Covenant (if that is a real one) to other people, especially the Jews and Christians, instead of keeping it as a private property. In common sense, any God or Goddess want to share (spread as much as possible of) the good things about the religion so why a group of people kept it as a secret piece even without sharing to its people (in that country)!!
BTW, the quality of this DVD, which was released in 1994 as VHS, is very poor. Although I used Sony Fontopia earphone to boost the sound quality, I heard annoying background noises from the narrator. The voices of historians are clearer and better than the narrator somehow. If you are wondering whether to keep this in your library, check out from library or Blockbuster first. I also recommend "Lost Treasures: Ancient Jerusalem" that has better quality with very interesting computer remodeling of ancient Jerusalem and the temples.

Cirque du Soleil - Alegria (Live in Sydney) (2001) Review

Cirque du Soleil - Alegria (Live in Sydney) (2001)

Alegria(Live in Sydney) is my favorite CdS DVD behind Quidam, which is slightly superior in my opinion because of the incredible acts performed. But it should be noted that Francesca Gagnon steals the show with her mesmerizing voice. The acts in Alegria of course are superb(this is CdS we are talking about after all!), but the music and the singing elevate the entire show to something almost magical. The music is intertwined with the acts for utterly amazing choreography, even moreso than the other shows.
As far as DVD content is concerned, there is much here for any Cirque fan. There are two featurettes: "A Look Behind-the-Scenes" and "A Different Perspective." Also included are short interviews of the artists themselves. The show itself is well worth the price of the DVD, but these add-ons are a very nice bonus.
It is surprising how much feeling comes through on DVD....the filming was about as well done as could have ever been expected! Any CdS fan will not tire of watching the acts of Alegria or of hearing the beautiful voice of Francesca Gagnon. If Angels sing, surely they sound like Ms. Gagnon.

Sex & The Single Mom (2003) Review

Sex and The Single Mom (2003)

Usually, in stories like this, a teenage girl gets careless, becomes pregnant, and has to hide it from her mother. But here, it's the mother who gets careless, becomes pregnant, and has to hide it from her daughter! The aforementioned (single) mother has been discouraging her teenage daughter from becoming sexually active, while carrying on a wild, secret affair with a married man. When she becomes pregnant and her lover abandons her, she has to face her own hypocrisy. This film is a cut above most made-for-Lifetime-TV movies, thanks largely to Gail O'Grady's performance as the mother - she's always luminous and likable, even when some might question her behavior. Credit must also go to Danielle Panabaker as the daughter.

Like mother, like daughter? When it comes to romance, single mom Jess Gradwell and her 15-year-old daughter Sara may have a lot more in common than they think. Intrigued by a hunky heart surgeon, Jess falls hard into a possibly unwise affair. At the same time, Sara is discovering her own longings and perhaps acting unwisely about a boy at school. Emotions are on edge in the Gradwell household. Jess and Sara clash over sexuality and morality. Then Jess makes a decision that will change both of them forever.

Devil's Diary (2007) Review

Devil's Diary (2007)
Average Reviews:

I feel the need to see all Alexz Johnson movies - she's one of my favorite actresses.
This one was a bit off in places - I found it amusing that the "popular" crowd was stereotypically cheerleaders and jocks again, but even funnier were the awkward nun-like cheerleader uniforms.
Alexz's character was by far the most likable because she is who she is and doesn't care what anyone else thinks. Her best friend is different and takes criticism from other students that have clear faults themselves, very hard. Not that anyone would blame her. She finds a diary in the cemeary and starts writing...soon after, the things she writes that she wished would happen DO happen. And it IS funny. Then the "popular girls" eavesdrop and find out what she's doing as Dominique (Alexz) gets worried about the journal making her friend dark and evil little by little. The journal gets stolen and carnage ensues as it travels to more ambitious aka more evil hands.
The ending "six weeks later" is a little strange and doesn't explain alot - there were others that saw what happened and knew about the book, but it seems Dom is on her own.
I wouldn't mind a sequel starring Alexz again, but it's probably not likely...
Some of the things that happen are a little - disturbing and extreme for a "Lifetime" movie, and pranks escalate to gruesome death pretty fast. Not recommended for kids.

The Two Mr. Kissels (2008) Review

The Two Mr. Kissels (2008)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This was a Lifetime TV movie produced in 2008, which is now available on DVD.
Such movies, which bypass the theatre, generally have no rating. If it had a film rating it would probably be PG-13.
This has everything: sex, drugs, wealth, deception, murder--and best of all, it is a true story. More accurately it's a dramatization of a true story-somewhat like "Reversal of Fortune", or other films which attempt to re-enact actual murder stories in film. There's nothing to make a story more interesting than knowing the basics are all real.
This is certainly better than the usual made-for-TV movie and better than a lot of films that appear in the cinema. The acting is good, the filming good, the dialog good, the pace and editing are good. It kept me interested the entire time. There are sexually suggestive scenes but no significant nudity, no graphic violence and no foul language of any significance. There is no subtitling available and no "special features." It runs just under 1.5 hours long.
It's the story of two brothers, raised in a rich family-both of whom end up murdered. In the case of one brother, the wife is convicted of murder. In the case of the other brother, the actual murderer was unknown at the time of the production: one person had been charged with conspiracy to murder but had not yet gone to trial. The film presents its own plausible theory as to this other brother's death (I don't want to give away the plot details). At the end of the film clarification and updates on the significant characters are given-right up to 2008. A fascinating but sad glimpse into the lives of two quite wealthy brothers and their families. If you haven't seen this on TV and you don't want to wait around until it happens to show again--get this DVD. You'll find this an interesting and well-produced story, with very good characterizations.

Based on the shocking true story of multi-millionaire brothers who marry the women of their dreams then wind up dead, the Lifetime Original Movie The Two Mr. Kissels traces the trail of money, mansions and mayhem left behind by real estate mogul Andrew Kissel (John Stamos) and his investment banker brother, Rob (Anson Mount, 'Conviction'). On the surface, it seems that both Kissel brothers are enjoying idyllic lives. But after Rob moves his family to Hong Kong for a promotion, his wife Nancy (Robin Tunney, 'The Mentalist') grows resentful of his long work hours. She begins a torrid affair in retaliation, eventually igniting worldwide media frenzy when she drugs then bludgeons Rob to death. Years later, Andrew is caught embezzling millions of dollars to support his increasingly lavish lifestyle and drug addiction. With the courts breathing down his neck, former business partners turning on him, and his frustrated and embarrassed wife Hayley (Gretchen Egolf, 'Journeyman') filing for divorce, Andrew is found dead in the basement of his Greenwich, Connecticut mansion. The question remains: was Andrew murdered by one of his many enemies, or did he arrange it himself in order to escape his living nightmare?
