Wow! THeese girls have talent like you can't find very often, anymore. They even play guitar, and write their own songs, but most of all they sing GREAT!!! Aly (Alyson Michalka) stars on a diney channel show called "Phil of the Future". A.J. (Amanda Joy Michalka) has reappearing roles and has guest-starred on many shows. I recommend buying their Album Into the Rush, also. On the concert DVD, there is behind the scenes footage, and several entertaining home videos from when the girls were younger.
They are Christians, and very nice people, which makes me like them even more.
BUY THIS AND THEIR ALBUM INTO THE RUSH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good Rockin' Tonight - The Legacy of Sun Records (2001)

I'm not big on writing negative reviews on things, but I am gonna rain on the parade here a bit.
I was excited about seeing this documentary, quite excited actually. I'm a big fan of the music that came out of Sun Records, but oddly enough I really never read or watched much about the history of the legendary studio. I knew the basic story, but was eager to learn a bit more. Books have been written-which I will get to eventually-but a documentary was too good to pass up.
Well, I learned basically doodly-squat from this 2 hour documentary. The famous Sun artists are briefly introduced and talked about, but are whisked out of the film almost as quickly as they arrive. I know most of these artists can(and do)have their own documentaries, but I would have expected a little more to be said about these people. These people made Sun! Aside from a brief photograph, Roy Orbison isn't even mentioned!
On the good side, the film does devote a lot of time to Billy Lee Riley(RIP) and Sonny Burgess, two excellent artists who's promising careers got shafted. It's nice to see them, listen to their stories, and even see them perform.
Now for the down side. At the time this film was being made, a Sun Records tribute album was being recorded, and it features more contemporary artists covering Sun songs. A big chunk of this documentary comes across as a commercial for this album as it shows numerous musical numbers being done by modern bands(okay, Paul McCartney, Mark Knopfler, Robert Plant and Jimmy Page aren't exactly "contemporary", but many of the bands are). This irritated the hell out of me. Seeing the balls removed from raw, rockin' songs and(some of them)turned into whiny emo crap is frustrating and sad. I had to have the FF button handy at all times, especially when Kid Rock came out rapping. Kid Rock isn't qualified to be a custodian at Sun Records, let alone cover any of their songs. It makes me wonder if half of these bands are truly Sun Records fans or just along for the ride coz they happen to like one or two Johnny Cash songs.
Sorry if I sound bitter, but I am bitter. If you happen to like these reworkings, that's all fine and dandy as they are obviously intended, not only as tributes, but to appeal to a younger generation as well. But I don't see why your age should require a filter to process older music. But I can't say that ALL of the performances were bad, coz they weren't. In all fairness, there were some decent covers. I would have much rather have seen classic performances by the original Sun artists is all.
And of course the main player in this film is Sun founder Sam Phillips, and he's not at a loss for words. He's portrayed as a pioneer but certainly not a saint as he screwed a few of his artists over. He seems to think he's hot poop, but considering the legacy of Sun, it's easy to see why.
I honestly can't recommend this if you're looking for a good documentary on the Sun story, as this is a very abridged version. I don't claim to be an expert on Sun, but I'd hoped the film would have at least put me on the path. Looks like I'll be searching out those books now.

Historians may never agree about where and when rock 'n' roll was born, but they do agree that an entrepreneur in the world of music named Sam Phillips began a revolution and spawned a legacy when he created Sun Records. This Memphis-based success story defined some of the most appealing roots of American popular culture with such seminal artists as Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and so many others, all reprised in this two-hour American Masters film with such performers as Paul McCartney, Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, and Live, many accompanied by Elvis' original sidemen, Scotty Moore and D.J. Fontana. Highlights include a moving rendition of "Lonely Weekends" with Jerry Lee Lewis and Matchbox Twenty, and an emotional reunion of old Mississippi Delta musicians. Songs: That's All Right (Paul McCartney), Honey Don't (Ben Folds Five), Rock n' Roll Ruby (Mark Knopfler), I Walk the Line (Live), My Bucket's Got a Hole in It (Robert Plant & Jimmy Page), Blue Suede Shoes (Johnny Hallyday), Who Will the Next Fool Be (Zucchero), Cry, Cry, Cry (Third Eye Blind), Drinkin' Wine Spo-Dee-O-Dee (Malcolm Yelvington and Kid Rock), Lonely Weekend (Matchbox Twenty).

Even if you saw or taped the television show, this DVD is worth buying. I got a copy of it a couple of months ago from the fan club, so I've already viewed it numerous times.
With this DVD, you get two versions of the show: what was aired on CBS and what was taped. The taped version is full of funny outakes, redos (his "frog" at the end of Mandy), interesting talk and even an extra song (Somewhere Down the Road). Also Barry's peronal dialogue is on that version.
An entertaining show, an uptempo audience and Manilow's irresistable melodies in top form. Don't miss it!

This DVD is FANTASTIC!... This is a must-have for any true Glen Campbell fan and even if you weren't a big fan before viewing this....you'll love it!...Glen's performance is TERRIFIC!... ALL of his great hits are on here and Glen is in great form not to mention his amazing guitar playing skills. During one song, "The William Tell Overture", he actually plays the guitar on his head. From the moment I put this DVD into my player, I have been unable to stop playing it. The song selections are wonderful and Glen gives an enthusiastic performance on every song which he sings with such heartfelt emotion. The resolution is exceptional along with the 5.1 dolby digital surround sound. He is backed by the brilliantly wonderful South Dakota Orchestra and this is such a pleasure to listen to. Glen Campbell is like vintage wine.....he just gets better with age. An added bonus track is "Mac Arthur Park". I don't think I have ever heard this song sung more beautifully. Get this DVD.....you won't be disappointed :) It leaves you wanting more from this GREAT entertainer.

Roxy Music - Live at the Apollo (2002)

Without rehashing the astute comments of other reviewers, here's what your 20 plus bucks will get you: One of the absolute best (in every way) concerts ever captured on film, bar none! From the material selected (Ferry said that he had a "short list of 50 songs" from which this final list emerged) to the stage set; from the DTS/Dolby surround mix to the camera work; from the audience/band rapport to the incredible musicianship, this has it all.
As good as Roxy Music's studio recordings are, they could never match the live performance, and this DVD is proof positive (compare, for example, the original version of 'Mother of Pearl' to this one). I caught Bryan Ferry in concert about 10 years ago (with Phil Manzanera, Andy Mackay and drummer Andy Newmark), and as good as it was, this concert was better. With four of the original members (including drummer Paul Thompson) augmented by equally talented support musicians Colin Good (piano), Zev Katz (bass), Lucy Wilkins (violin, keyboards and synth) and Julia Thornton (percussion, keyboards and vibraphone), the result is nearly magical. Flawless musicianship, exhuberant stage dynamics and thrilling versions of great songs make this an almost life-affirming experience. (Good, Katz and Thornton were part of the small orchestral backing group Ferry used in his 'Bryan Ferry in Concert-Live in Paris' release of 2000)
While some may quibble about the song selections (I would like to have seen 'Angel Eyes' included), to see and hear musicians of this calibre whenever the mood strikes (which for me is daily) is something special. It is impossible to recommend this DVD too highly.

Having been a Bunnymen fan for over 20 years, and after seeing them live three times, I was eager to secure this live DVD. I am now enjoying the DVD for almost two weeks; I am very glad that I was not swayed by the various reviews that slag the quick editing / imagery.
I enjoy this DVD the more I play it. I especially like the mix of songs that were chosen for this production. Hearing some older and lesser known songs such as Villiers Terrace and Zimbo / All My Colours rounds out an excellent playlist.
The projection of old band related images onto the backstage does not distract from the production. Rather, I enjoy seeing the images of the band in younger days. The main focus of the camera remains Ian and Will; their performances become stronger and the show progresses.

Walnut Creek (2008) Review

To respond to the previous viewer, it isn't a coincidence that the band released a show from summer rather than 11/22, or any other date on the fall tour. Summer shows at outdoor amphitheaters usually involve extra video production to feed to those large screens usually beside the stage. You don't get that at Phish's indoor shows.
I won't attempt a song-by-song review since that's so, so subjective. Everyone has not only their favorite songs, but often their favorite arrangements of songs, or their favorite jam elements. Suffice to say that this is easily, very easily, the best performance so far that Phish has released in its entirety - the IT DVD is more of a retrospective than a live show, in my opinion. No disrespect to the folks that enjoy Brooklyn, Vegas, or Woodbury (google it if it's not ringing any bells), but this, at last, is something that captures the band on their game.
And capture the band it does. Because the video is taken from those projection screens, it features many, many close shots. That's the point of those screens - to bring the band members closer. You don't watch a video screen to see the stage show when you've got the actual stage in front of you :) Which is a roundabout way of saying that Kuroda fans may be disappointed. You can sort of get a sense for what was going on . . . but not really. You don't get any lightning shots, and you don't get those fantastic, sweeping crowd shots like those on the IT DVDs.
There's no mistaking the fact that this is a bare bones release. Right down to the bare-bones price. For what you'll pay for this, and what you'll get, it seems ridiculous to complain. And I'm not complaining. This is a 100% must-have release. Just don't expect it to be some grand production. It's a chance to view some very well-preserved stage presentation video, which is a treat in itself, but it obviously wasn't filmed with the intention of releasing it commercially.
My take? Just be glad they did.

Have You Heard - Jim Croce Live (2003) Review

Have You Heard - Jim Croce Live (2003)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Having purchased some really bad concert DVD's, I was not sure what to expect here. While you can definitely tell that this is old video, I was surprised and excited by the audio and video quality. Jim Croce brings a depth of emotion and warmth to his performances.
Three songs are not played live in concert, but show photographs and video footage of Jim with his family. This is deeply moving. The live recordings are not of one concert, but a variety of formats. Although it was obvious that some of these recordings were for TV, these recordings brought back memories of the coffeehouse era. Just two guys with guitars singing into microphones. Jim Croce talks before some of the songs. There is nothing to interfere with the enjoyment of the music. This DVD creates the experience of actually being there. There is direct access to every song. The 16 songs are 52 minutes long. The bonus features are 21 minutes long.
Ingrid gives a 52 minute commentary. She describes how she and Jim Croce met and how she fell in love with him. She talks about Jim's life and career. She tearfully describes their last conversation and reminds us that Jim Croce was not the only one to die in the plane crash, that guitarist Maury Muehleisen died with him. (Road manager Dennis Rast, booking agent Ken Cortese, comedian George Stevens, and pilot Robert Elliott were killed in this crash.) The 21 minute commentary by A.J. Croce discusses getting to know his father as a person through Jim's music and interviews of those who knew Jim. He talks about the bonus features included in the DVD.
Seeing Jim Croce brought back the profound sense of loss of this wonderful man and tremendous talent. This over 2 hour DVD is an intensely personal and intimate picture of Jim Croce the man, husband, father, and friend, and Jim Croce the musician. This tribute to Jim Croce is a reminder to us of how brief life is. "Have You Heard - Jim Croce Live" is a tremendous DVD and I highly recommend it.

When Jim Croce died tragically in a plane crash on Sept. 20, 1973, he was just 30 years old and had recently been recognized as one of the most promising artists of his era.In a two-year span, he had eight Top 40 singles, two of which were #1 records and a #1 album. Despite being one of America’s most-loved artists, there has never been a video document of his career.Until now. Have You Heard: Jim Croce Live, features the late singer-songwriter’s performances on television in the early 1970’s. Set in an intimate style akin to today’s popular Unplugged series, the DVD includes performances of such classic Croce songs as "You Don’t Mess Around With Jim," "Operator (That’s Not The Way It Feels)," "Bad, Bad LeRoy Brown," many not seen since they were originally broadcast. Jim Croce’s widow, Ingrid, and their son A.J., provide special narration, filled with intimate anecdotes and stirring memories of their lives.Main Program Listing: 1. The price is right for this nice collection of videos from Audioslave, the super group featuring Chris Cornell of Soundgarden with Rage Against the Machine (minus Zack de la Rocha).
This DVD is worth getting alone for the "Show Me How To Live" video which cleverly samples the vintage '70s car chase film, Vanishing Point. MTV has yet to show this video -- they may have banned it because of the ending of the video -- and so this may be your only chance to get a really good copy of it.
Also included on the disc are the videos for "Cochise" (awesome video for this rockin' tune) and "Like A Stone." There is also bonus concert footage from when the band performed on Letterman ontop of the marquee of the Ed Sullivan theater.
If you're a fan of the band then this is a must-have item.

Waylon Jennings: Nashville Rebel (2006) Review

Waylon Jennings: Nashville Rebel (2006)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First off, I'd like to begin by clearing up a couple misconceptions:
1) this is NOT the 1966 film of the same name;
2) there is NOT a 100-page booklet included.
Both these points have erroneously appeared on a number of online-retailer websites.
This IS a companion piece to the acclaimed 4-CD box set of the same title. The DVD menu opens with the flipping thru of a Waylon scrapbook...flipping a bit too fast to really study the pix but that's OK as most are included in the lavish 144 page book that comes with this DVD's big brother box set of the same title, also in stores now.
Here's what you'll see:
1. Only Daddy That'll Walk The Line
- from the Johnny Cash Show, 1970. Waylon had just won a Grammy for MacArthur Park and JRC congratulates him on that significant accomplishment. Waylon throws in that even JR ain't done that yet. Before launching into 'ONLY DADDY' they exchange the now-familiar comments about the time they shared a room at the Fontaine Bleu apartments in Madison -- where JR points out that during that era he felt that 'Waylon wouldn't ever amount to nuthin...'. He was sure wrong about that!! ;-)
2. Honky Tonk Heroes
3. Louisiana Woman
4. This Time
5. Slow Rollin Low
- trax 2-5 are from "Don Kirshner's Rock Concert", 1974. Sounds a helluvalot like the September recordings in Texas that same year. As opposed to the August 1978 'Lost Outlaw Performance' -which was attended exclusively by a very boring bunch of industry executives- these songs were recorded before a typical 70's crowd!!! :-)
6. Lonesome, Onry & Mean
7. Ramblin Man
8. It's Not Supposed To Be That Way
9. Amanda
10. Waymore's Blues
- now, for the real treat....when he was producing Waylon's 'DREAMING MY DREAMS' album, brother-in-law/outlaw Cowboy Jack Clement was also doing a bit of taping. We've previously seen only but a clip of 'LONESOME, ON'RY & MEAN' in Waylon's official vid-ography -- but now, we get the song in its entirety as well as the 4 others listed above. For those fascinated with Waylon's formidable geetar-pickin, you'll find the extended version of 'RAMBLIN' MAN' to be well worth the price of admission. I especially enjoyed 'WAYMORE'S BLUES' which has Waylon sitting on a park bench, playing his acoustic, alongside Lil Miss Jessi. There's some great banter between the two --- as well as a real good hint that there's more to come!!!
11. Luckenbach, TX
12. Mammas, Don't Let Your....
13. Good Hearted Woman
14. Are You Ready...
15. Are You Sure Hank....
- trax 11-15 are from the aforementioned 'Lost Outlaw Performance' taped at Opryland, 1978.08.12
16. The Conversation (w/ Hank Jr)
17. Never Could Toe The Mark
18. America
- while many have seen these music vids before, they are great examples of the post-crazy-year portion of this fabulous sampling of the 14 year period in Waylon's career covered by this disc.
19. Commercial for Waylon's Greatest Hits
20. Commercial for Outlaws album
- while not in chrono-order [?] the inclusion of these rare TV spots is a great way to finish off the collection...especially with so many of Waylon's die-harder fans not having even been born when they originally aired.
I'm still hoping that RCA/Legacy will release a deluxe version of the NASHVILLE REBEL music and vid set -- as they did with Cash's THE LEGEND. Considerably more expensive, the deluxe version of that title includes a 12x16 hard-cover coffee table book, additional music and vids as well as s limited edition litho and some other goodies.
Hummm, and wouldn't it be great if it all were packaged in a real, hand-tooled leather coat!!
Be sure and get this DVD as soon as you're able. I believe the retail is 12.99 and can be had for as little as 9.99 -- so be sure to shop around to find the best buy.

The previous reviewer of this disc is correct with his song listing, and so,the two programs being reissued on this disc("A Special From The Spectrum" recorded in Philadelphia and "Live '83",recorded in Utrecht,Holland) are NOT being reissued complete, with "Stand up and Shout" omitted from the Philadelphia concert, and a 20 minute version of "Heaven & Hell" being omitted from the Utrecht show. When I buy a DVD reissue of a program that I've already owned on VHS or Laserdisc, then, ideally,I'd like to get extra songs and supplemental material, but,at the very least,I want to get the original program complete.Although it's true that the song contents of the two concerts overlapped, that's no excuse for dropping songs.I wonder if it was Ronnie James Dio's decision,or merely a stingy record company trying to save money by reducing the payout of mechanical royalties. This DVD is a deplorable rip-off,and useless as an upgrade to fans who already own the complete, uncut programs via previous VHS or Laserdisc releases. This release is an import from Universal Music(who has the non-U.S. rights on the 1980's DIO recordings). Let's hope that Rhino & Warner Brothers(who have the U.S. rights) never release these edited versions of the programs.Oh well,I guess I'll transfer my vintage VHS of the Spectrum concert and my Japanese Laserdisc of the Utrecht concert onto DVD-R.Because this is a virtuoso heavy metal group with substantial amounts of improvisation from the guitarist & drummer,no two performances of a song are identical.A slight overlap in song contents between the Philadelphia & Utrecht shows is NOT a justification to omit the "redundant" songs.Though "Stand Up & Shout" & "Heaven and Hell" were included in both shows, they were hardly identical renditions. This DVD should be taken off the market. Please Rhino & Time-Warner:Spare U.S. fans from this travesty, and NEVER release these edited programs in America.DIO fans:You've been warned about this worthless product.

Take Me Home (2000)
Average Reviews:

While it interesting to have some decent actors associated with this film, it is also very disheartening for any of Johns fans to see so many inaccuracies in this production. The songs are mostly all out of chronological order, and Chad Lowe trying to mime to Johns voice while "playing" unconvincing guitar, does not work. Kristen Davis does a nice job of portraying "Annie", but the film fails to capture the quality of John's music, or his deep commitment to the causes, that drove so much of his work. There is no attempt to analyse why his life became such a struggle for a man at the top of the world. If Hal Thau was indeed involved so deeply with this project, its a crying shame that so many of the production details were poorly researched. John was a highly intelligent and passionate man who spoke in Congress, and lobbyed politicians to help with his environment projects, but in this film he comes across as whinny and insipid - two things he was definately not.
The man deserved a better biopic of his fascinaing life than this tardy effort.

Brian Kohler wrote: "how can there be 13 girls in the 12 girls band? Thats craaazzzy!!!!"
Not so craaazzzy. There are 13 doughnuts in a baker's dozen and the Three Musketeers had four members, Porthos, Athos, Aramis, and d'Artagnon. Gotta learn to think outside the box.
But, more to the point, the Twelve Girls Band is outstanding, especially, I think, for their masterful renditions of Bach and Beethoven. I had my doubts that European classical and baroque music could be played appropriately on Eastern instruments, but they quickly disabused me of that idea. I felt the same way about Bela Fleck playing Bach on the banjo, but he proved that good music could be played by talented musicians on any instrument and made to sound as though it had been written for that instrument. Terrific DVD...highly recommended!

Having just finished all 17 hours (!) of material, there is so much to digest. I hope I can give you at least an idea of what to expect.
First, I don't think there has ever been a documentary project of this scope in documenting the "History of Popular Music". Director Tony Palmer literally traveled the world to film thousands of hours of performances and interviews with the "key players", who shed light on all aspects of the "popular music" business. These interviewees are singers, musicians, agents, critics, record producers and composers. And the quotes that Palmer - who seems to actually be doing the interviewers in most cases are gems. Phil Spector in the mid-70s discussing his music while playing a guitar! (Have you ever seen Spector playing an instrument?). Producer John Hammond on racism in the industry. Hoagy Carmichael on his hit "Stardust", Pete Seeger on "what is folk music?". David Bowie saying "I never wanted to be a rock star." It's gems like these that make this essential viewing for anyone, of any age, who cares about "Popular Music". And Palmer conducted interviews with Bing Crosby, Rudy Vallee and Eubie Blake before they died.
Let me also point out that "Popular Music" as covered in the 17 chapters of this set means any music that is not "Classical". Presented mostly chronologically in the order that these musical styles occurred, there are Episodes devoted to Ragtime, Blues, Jazz Country, Vaudeville (and Music Hall, since this is a British production), Swing, Protest Songs and , finally - for the last four Episodes - Rock music. Actually the Rock sections are the weakest of the set as quite a few of these artists' careers went nowhere. And the set ends with Virgin Records founder saying, in 1980, that Mike Oldfield (whose "Tubular Beels" was a smash hit on Branson's label) is "the future of Popular Music".
It's also very important to know the background of the project. From 1976 to 1980 the 17 Episodes were broadcast on British TV and, to my knowledge, never aired in the US. So we are missing the last 27 years of pop music history. No Disco, no Punk, no Alternative and no Disney on Broadway. Younger viewers will be surprised to see all the long hair and sideburns, leisure suits and wide shirt collars. But this was the period when the interviews were done.. The series was recorded on film and, though the soundtrack has been remastered, the film stock was not restored. It looks dated. Palmer sometimes becomes quirky in his choices of visuals. The early "Vaudeville and Music Hall" Episode has some nice footage of Al Jolson and some British Music Hall performers but it also has a topless stripper from circa 1975. In the Episode on Protest Songs we hear a protest song while we watch some really violent footage of a Roller Derby! The authorities that Palmer enlisted to "write" the scripts are experts like Stephen Sondheim (show music), Paul Oliver (blues), Derek Taylor (the Beatles) and Ian Whitcomb and Rudi Blesh (Ragtime).
So, despite some missteps and a visual quality that looks like a 16mm print it's the interviews and the live performance footage that Palmer captured (mixed with lots of newsreel and TV footage) that make this set special. Knowing of the few moments of nudity and violence which is included, I feel that a copy of this belongs in every school and public library to act as a visual and aural history course on both American and British pop culture for at least the first ¾ of the 20th century.
It lost a "star", in my opinion, because of the film and sound quality but don't let that deter you from buying it. Nothing like this project will ever be attempted again, so this is the best we can hope for.
HIGHLY recommended!

Instant Star - Season 1 (2005) Review

Instant Star - Season 1 (2005)

Instant Star has been a popular teen favorite the past few seasons. Fans of the show will be pleased with the DVD release of the first season. The season one DVD includes the first 13 episodes of the show. The downside is that season one aired so long ago these episodes seem like light years ago. It would have been good if they would have released the first and second season together on DVD.
The first season chronicles Jude's semi rise to stardom. After winning the Instant Star competition she receives a record contract with G Major Records. Her producer is "Little Tommy Q," who used to be in a boy band named Boyz Attack. Tommy is all grown up now and he is her producer who she has a crush on it seems. Adding to the story is her close relationship with her male childhood best friend Jamie. At this time in the series, Jude is still in high school and living with her parents who are still married. Her sister Sadie is a little older than her but they attend the same school.
The first season is primarily about her recording songs for G Major and dealing with various unexpected trappings of sudden fame. First she has conflict with a fellow recording artist named Eden. Then she finds love with a rapper named Shay. Things really heat up when her and her producer Tommy share an unexpected kiss on Jude's 16th birthday. It's all not a smooth ride as she also has to deal with her parents crumbling marriage.
Instant Star is a television series packed with drama. It's a series that teens and adults will find intriguing and it was created by the same people who created the series Degrassi The Next Generation. Bonus features includes deleted scenes, bloopers, cast auditions, music performances and more.

The CD and DVD of Amazing Grace are just wonderful and very inspirational. The Issacs song "I Surrender All" is especially beautiful and touching. They are quickly becoming my favorite group. Bill Gaither just keeps putting out better collections of Christian music. We have most of them and this one goes right at the top of the list.
