Paul Weller: Hit Parade (2007)

First off- all credit to the marketing and genius behind this one. Jam packed full of Weller's videos from 1977 to last years solo record. Every great single video from the modfather is here on a double disc dvd housed in a sturdy booklike case- from in the city to my ever changing moods to his solo breakthrough Wildwood. Of particular interest is the solo videos- many unseen in the us. For the Weller fan this is a dream come true. My only complaint is leaving out the promo videos for boy who cried wolf and heavens above( a great song and video). Other than that you get it all including top of the pop tv performances from the Jam(basically mimed tv performances) most of the Style Council highlights minus the aforementioned songs and all his solo videos. Great tunes great style and class videos. Proof that Weller is king is displayed on 60+ videos spanning his entire career. This is essential and a pure pleasure to watch- truly inspiring!!!!!

Best 25 Years of Pop - Prod By Trevor Horn (2005)
Average Reviews:

I was lucky enough to be at this show last year, and it was a wonderful evening. Very rarely does an opportunity arise for so many great artists to come together and perform on one stage, so it was moving to see so many acts, and fans, gather together to pay tribute to the talents of Trevor Horn, possibly the greatest producer of the last 30 years.
All the performances were of a high standard, including Trevors' own band The Buggles, who opened the show with two UK top 20 hits, "Video Killed The Radio Star" and "The Plastic Age". Other highlights included the reformed and newly fronted Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Yes ("Owner Of A Lonely Heart"), the divine Ms Grace Jones, vocal spot on and oozing charisma on "Slave To The Rhythm", and of course ABC. Martin Fry is a true showman and he was on top form for this performance.
For me, the highlight however was the duo DOLLAR. They reunited especially for this event - no mean feat given Thereza Bazar now lives in Australia. Dollar are a group who have never been given their rightful place in musical history. They were the first act who recognised Trevors producer potential from The Buggles records, and as such were the first to utilise him as a producer (and song writer). The result was 4 smash hit UK singles, two of which are included here, "Give Me Back My Heart" and "Mirror Mirror". It was the sheer magnificence of these records (most notably "Hand Held In Black And White") that attracted ABC to Trevor Horn. ABC of course became a global phenomena, opening the door for Frankie, Art Of Noise, Seal. You get the picture. Upshot is, had it not been for Dollar, you probably wouldn't have the chance to view this magnificent show, because a lot of these records wouldn't have been made.

YES, Pet Shop Boys, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Art of Noise, and many more. This DVD is more than two decades of epic Pop! The soundtrack of a generation. After 25 years in the making, here are the hits celebrating Prince’s Trust honoree and award winning music producer Trevor Horn. The only music producer to ever have simultaneous number one records in both the UK and the USA with two different acts.Trevor Horn’s groundbreaking musical career reads like a ‘who’s who’ of popular music. Starting with his own band, Buggles, and the timely legendary global hit, ‘Video Killed The Radio Star’, he then joined YES, first as band member, then Producer. His production career has continued with artists such as Frankie Goes to Hollywood, ABC, Godley & Creme, Paul McCartney, Seal, Simple Minds, Lisa Stansfield, Rod Stewart, Tatu and the list goes on and on.Uniquely, in the history of music, "Owner of a Lonely Heart" with YES and "Relax" with Frankie Goes To Hollywood resulted in Trevor being the only Producer to have simultaneous number one records in both the UK and the USA.His musical genius has created boundless worldwide hits and in the process, played a hugely influential role in shaping many artists careers as well as popular music culture. The $3 million HD production puts you in a front row seat.

Wow! THeese girls have talent like you can't find very often, anymore. They even play guitar, and write their own songs, but most of all they sing GREAT!!! Aly (Alyson Michalka) stars on a diney channel show called "Phil of the Future". A.J. (Amanda Joy Michalka) has reappearing roles and has guest-starred on many shows. I recommend buying their Album Into the Rush, also. On the concert DVD, there is behind the scenes footage, and several entertaining home videos from when the girls were younger.
They are Christians, and very nice people, which makes me like them even more.
BUY THIS AND THEIR ALBUM INTO THE RUSH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well...this could very well have been a 5 star review. I love that a new band that ROCKS is back on the scene, and if you turn off the TV and just listen to this live show through the stereo the performance, and the recording sound raunchy and ragged just like they should, which brings us to the problem. UNWATCHABLE...Whomever filmed, and/or edited this mess together should be shot with a ball of their own S@#T at sundown!!! The video cuts to a different camera angle so often that it virtual looks like still photos flashing before your eyes! I'd love a DVD of the same show with the video portion shot by somebody who knows what they're doing.

Live Revolution Rock (2008) Review

Live Revolution Rock (2008)
Average Reviews:

There's some great stuff here, to be sure, but VERY few complete performances. Songs get thru two verses, then get jammed into some lousy graphics or a voice-over that gives no real input into what we're seeing. Why cut off "White Man In Hammersmith" two lines from the end? Why not have the full performances from The Tomorrow Show instead of chopping them off right before the climax? There's already a perfectly good Clash documentary out there ("Westway To The World", highly recommended if you've not seen it), so the only real reason to pick this up is to see some new footage and hear how powerful the group's live performances were. And this doesn't achieve that. Hang on to your bootleg DVDs, your VHSs taped off late night TV, the clips downloaded from wherever... That's still (sadly) the only way to get the best of "the only band that matter".
So in short, the tracklist looks good, but the product falls very flat. Only for the true completist. Sad, but true.

The Moody Blues Hall of Fame - Live From the Royal Albert Hall (2000)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For the casual fan of the Moody Blues, this DVD (and the accompanying CD release) is just fine. It shows you where the Moodies are on the Threshold of a New Millennium.
But for a long time (33 years) fan such as myself, the DVD is a disappointment. Technically, the DVD is fine; sound and audio are great. The band looks great, and sounds wonderful.
Having seen the band on tour in '99 and 2000 in support of the Strange Times CD, I am too keenly aware of what was LEFT OFF the DVD: 1. Graeme Edge's spoken word coda to the orchestral overture. This has been a staple of the Moodies' concerts over the last decade, and to eliminate it was a bad artistic decision. 2. Graeme's moving song from Strange Times, "Nothing Changes." In many ways this song is the summation of the Moody Blues from 1967 to 2000 and should've been included. 3. The exclusion of "For My Lady," which is the only other song Ray Thomas does in concert anymore. The other song gets discussed... 4. ...now. As an earlier reviewer noted, how and why in the world was the instrumental break from "Legend of a Mind" edited out? This amazing exchange between Ray and keyboard whiz Paul Bliss is often the musical highlight of a Moodies show. It's unthinkable that this would be cut from the video.
As noted by another reviewer, the DVD is only 80 minutes long. Since we know that one side of a DVD can hold nearly 3 hours of material, it makes no sense to this fan why these cuts were made.
Strange Times, indeed.

Andre Rieu: Radio City Hall Live in New York (2007)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Taped in July 2006 at the Radio City Music Hall, this exuberant concert starts with a grand entrance set to "76 Trombones." The glittering show is occasionally interspersed with wonderful scenes of New York in Summer, with its amazing diversity and energy, and the "Godfather Theme" includes some sunny footage from Italy. The superb musicianship of Rieu (who now plays a 1732 Stradivarius), along with his unique and terrific Johann Strauss Orchestra and Chorus, always keep a light heart and a touch of humor while they perform pop and classical favorites. Guest artists are the Harlem Gospel Choir and 5 year old child prodigy Akim Camara.
The old time razzle dazzle aura of the Radio City Music Hall is a perfect setting for Rieu, who has perfected the fine art of schmaltz down to the last note, and never fails to delight us with his entertaining offerings. The concert includes the following numbers:
"76 Trombones"
With Akim Camara: "Dance of the Fairies"
With the Harlem Gospel Choir: "Amen," "I Will Follow Him," "Nun's Choir," "Oh Happy Day," "When the Saints Go Marching In"
"The Life of the Artist"
"Blaze Away"
"My Way"
"Godfather Theme"
"Singing in the Rain"
"The Washington Post"
"Music of the Night"
"Don't Cry for Me Argentina"
"Hallelujah Chorus"
"Radetzki March"
"A Bright Young Man"
"America the Beautiful"

Eric Clapton: Layla (2007) Review

Eric Clapton: Layla (2007)

If you have a few Clapton DVDs/Videos then you've seen small parts of some of these interviews. What is interesting here is you get the entire session on some of these. You see Eric interacting with the interviewers as if the camera is not on. Plus there's a few interviews, like some looney UK TV show, that people in the US wouldn't have seen.
The portrait displayed is of a genuine man. It's very cool, while I'm sure EC isn't entirely off his guard, he is very casual.
And while the only music is supplied by a 'TV show band' playing a bad rendition of Layla for 10 seconds, this is well worth it for the EC fan.
And yeah, it does say 'INTERVIEWS' on the box. Couldn't be clearer!

Don't let the April 28 posting deter you. With all due respect, it was based on the 20 minute Amazon clip, NOT a viewing of the actual DVD.
I purchased the European (PAL) version of this DVD last fall (Virgin Records has a tendancy to release the good stuff in Europe first, then it comes to the U.S.). Based on the cover art and Amazon description, this is the U.S/Canada version (i.e., Region 1) of the European release. Thus, it is the COMPLETE video collection PLUS the A Kiss Across the Ocean concert.
It is an excellent compilation with all of the classic music videos and more. I had never seen the videos for Victims, Mistake No. 3 (check out that GIANT wedding cake!) and The Medal Song.

Don Henley Live - Inside Job (2000) Review

Don Henley Live - Inside Job (2000)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
You all know Henley so I'll spare the career retrospective. This DVD was taped May 25, 2000 at Fair Park Music Hall in Dallas. From the opener of Dirty Laundry through the entire set and closing with Hotel California, this is a great show by a fantastic song writer. Don's voice sounds great on this night and his back-up band is very sharp. Not a lot of talk between songs, but one great tune after another. The other songs include Sunset Grill, Workin' It, Taking You Home, The Boys of Summer, Lilah, Everything is Different Now, The End of the Innocence, All She Wants to Do is Dance, New York Minute, Talking to the Moon, They're Not Here (They're Not Coming), The Heart of the Matter, Desperado, The Long Run, and My Thanksgiving.
That covers the show, now on to the DVD features... well, there really aren't any. The sound quality is excellent and the production is flawless, but no multiple camera angles, no extras, no videos, just a short intro then on to the show. I'm not complaining as the show is fantastic, but if you like whistles and bells look elsewhere. If you love Henley, the Eagles or just great music then you'll still love it.

Lifehouse - Everything (2005) Review

Lifehouse - Everything (2005)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It seems pretty short considering how much is on this DVD. Would've been nice if they recorded a show but we got some music videos and some live stuff but they did forget one thing oddly enough.
Hanging by a Moment: This is NOT the version MTV went nuts on when the song was first released. It's compiled from live footage. It's kinda disappointing since the original's not on here.
Sick Cycle Carousel: A more ambitious video with the band performing and some kid climbing stairs and encountering a maze and I don't know it's pretty odd. Song's good though.
Breathing: It's one of those bit players sing the song videos where Jason's in a taxi passing by people who keep singing the song. It's a nice song but it's not a particularly inventive video.
Spin: If you get motion sickness easily, don't watch this. They took the concept of spinning literally as the camera is constantly turning clockwise except for one section. I like the song, so-so on the video.
You and Me: The band performs in a subway station with a guy and girl trying to meet each other only they keep missing. It's a nice video, well shot so the video is good for the song.
Blind: I don't remember much about this video except one thing: his eyeliner. Ugh, it's like he's trying to be Brandon Flowers from the Killers or Billy Corgan Machina-era.
We got 4 live performances: a little underwhelming performance for Everything(the vocals are off I find) and Come Back Down, Days Go By and You and Me. They're not bad but a full set would've worked better.
It's a good set for what it is but you get the feeling they could've added more to it.

The Allman Brothers Band - Live at the Beacon Theatre (2003) Review

The Allman Brothers Band - Live at the Beacon Theatre (2003)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
An excellent live concert release from one of the original jam bands. Here The Allman Brothers Band present an uncut 2 Hour and 48 minute concert recorded in March 2003 at The Beacon Theater in New York. Although a few Allman Brothers classics like Ramblin Man, Jessica, In Memory of Elizabeth Reed, and Revival are not here they are included on other video releases and what is included here is excellent and worthy of 5 stars. The 5.1 sound and video quality are excellent and the band is as tight as they have ever been. This version of the Allman Brothers Band (Founding members Gregg Allman, Jaimoe, and Butch Trucks, along with longtime band members Warren Haynes, Marc Quinones, and Oteil Burbridge, and more recent addition Derek Trucks doing a good job filling Dickie Betts' shoes) seem to be really enjoying themselves on stage and it comes through in the quality of the music.
Besides the concert, the double DVD release also includes approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes of interviews and behind the scenes footage. There is a also a very good dressing room performance of Old Friend by Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks along with a photo gallery and discography.
Here is the Track Listing:
1. Ain't Wastin' Time No More
2. Black Hearted Woman
3. Statesboro Blues
4. Woman Across The River
5. A Change Is Gonna Come
6. Maydell
7. Come & Go Blues

14. Leave My Blues At Home
15. Old Before My Time
16. The Same Thing

I'm a big Santana fan, and bought this DVD with a Dolby Digital insignia on the back of the label at Best Buy, expecting that the format was DD 5.1, and why shouldn't it be?
But once I got it open and in the DVD player I discovered that the format was - PCM ONLY! There is no "setup" option in the menu and no audio format choice - NO DD period.
Companies like Sony/Arista spend millions on PR combatting piracy. But piracy works both ways - in this case Arista (Sony) took my money and fraudulently fobbed-off this poorly produced product.

This is 2006 and to produce a music DVD that is "PCM only" is nothing short of idiotic.
Don't buy this video expecting that the producers have made any effort to give you value for your money, because they haven't.
Aren't these guys ever accountable?
This shortchanging of consumers is becoming all too common. For instance,"The Island" was distributed in Canada with DD5.1 in french, but only DD2.1 in english.
Even after the mistake came to light and buyers realized they had been fleeced, the producers made their customers go through all kinds of hoops to obtain the correct DD5.1 english copy.
The distributors even refused to replace copies, that were sold to video stores, with the "authentic"DD5.1 version, seemingly willing to commit fraud with every rental.
