If you buy each season individually, it's CHEAPER than buying the set, and the set (based on the product details) doesn't come with anything different. I highly recommend buying the seasons individually like I did. For the record though, I do like the show. Particularly the earlier episodes actually.

Violentos Recuerdos / Violent Memories (2008) Review

(More customer reviews)This movie, which I saw on cable Video-on-Demand, was much better than what I expected it to be=- although I'm not sure what it was about.
It appears, on the surface, to be about a lady who was in an accident, has amnesia and can't remember any of the accident details-- nor anything else in her life-- and now is being held captive sort of (she doesn't try to escape and really has not reason to) in a psychiatric hospital. No one is mistreating her, but there seems to be some sort of foul-play going on behind the scenes. But what? As the story unfolds, it appears that something else altogether is going on. But what? For me, this saved this from being a dull south-of-the-border gore-fest. It was fun to look at, although the somber tones are clichéd. So, I won't mind having another go at seeing what on earth this movie about. Whatever it's about it's kind of fun to look at.
The movie's sinister air of ambiguity is reminiscent of David Lynch's "Mulholland Dr." (a movie that I would never have understood had I not read through all the Amazon reviews of the movie until I found an interpretation that explains the storyline. For fans of Spanish cinema, there are plot echoes of "La Ardilla Roja," although, as a whole, this movie hasn't a trace of "Ardilla"'s humor and beauty.

I never miss(ED) a program if I can (COULD) help it even if it's a rerun. So I was really happy to see it was coming out on DVD. I'm going to buy a back up set.......just in case anything happens to the DVD's I have.
2009-2010 UPDATE!!! - NO LONGER MY FAVORITE SHOW - IN FACT SINCE THEY PUSHED TIM OUT OF THE SHOW I DON'T EVEN WATCH IT ANYMORE. I FOLLOWED THE PROBLEMS TIM HAD VIA THE NEWSPAPER - TIM WAS FOUND NOT GUILTY OF THE CHARGE AGAINST HIM AND THE OTHER CHARGE WAS DROPPED BEFORE HIS TRIAL - HE'S SAID HE WANTS TO BE ON THE SHOW AGAIN - AND HE SHOULD BE - THEY SHOULD BRING HIM BACK AS A REGULAR. GOD KNOWS DOG CAN'T CHASE THE GUYS DOWN WITH HIS HIGH HEEL BOOTS - TIM AND LELAND DID THE MAJOR BULK OF THE CHASING - DOG - "MR. PEOPLE SHOULD GET ANOTHER CHANCE" CHAPMAN IS FULL OF IT. HE HIMSELF DID TIME IN PRISON A LONG TIME AGO FOR MURDER NO LESS (HE MENTIONS THAT A LOT), AND THEN HAD A MAJOR FLAP A YEAR OR SO BACK DUE TO HIS PERCEIVED RACIAL COMMENTS, AFTERWARDS HE SUCKED UP TO SOME PEOPLE FOR A WHILE AND HE WENT ON AS IF IT NEVER HAPPENED - HE SHOULD HELP HIS "BROTHER" TIM GET BACK ON THE SHOW (HE WAS THE MOST FUN TO WATCH ANYWAY!!) HE SAID THAT ON THE SHOW LONG AGO - NOW THAT WAS A DUMB IDEA. REALLY DISGUSTED WITH THAT FAMILY. THEY TALK ON AND ON (AND ON) ABOUT GIVING SECOND CHANCES TO EVERYONE ESPECIALLY TO THE CRIMINALS THEY'RE TAKING TO JAIL, BUT NOT ONE OF THEIR OWN? DISGUSTING. THEY'RE SO PERFECT!!!NOT!!!!!!! DISAPPOINTING SHOW AND REALLY DISAPPOINTING "FAMILY".
INSTEAD OF GIVING TIM THE SUPPORT THEY SHOULD HAVE, THEY LET HIM DOWN IN A BIG, BIG WAY.
I WOULD HAVE DUMPED THE DVD'S THAT I HAVE OF THE SHOW AND I HAVE A LOT, BUT TIM IS IN THEM - THAT'S THE ONLY REASON I KEPT THEM. GOOD LUCK TIM!

Foyle's War - The German Woman (2003) Review

(More customer reviews)PBS's ExxonMobil Masterpiece Theatre introduces Foyle's War; a four-episode murder-mystery series set in historic Hastings, England (i.e. The Battle of Hastings) at the onset of World War II. This is a much welcome installment for PBS Mystery! devotees as corporate sponsors have, unfortunately, been few-and-far-between in recent years. Detective Chief Superintendent Christopher Foyle is perfectly portrayed by Michael Kitchen, a Masterpiece Theatre alumnus, and he lends an easy-going charm and compassion to the serious and determined Foyle, who calmly tracks down the assorted murderers.
"The German Woman" starts the series off with a flourish (and two murders). It boasts an enviable cast of redoubtable British actors (Edward Fox, Robert Hardy, David Horovitch, Dominic Mafham, Rosamund Pike, etc...) and contains wonderful production values, so that the period atmosphere of English village life is fully evoked. The plot concerns the murder of the German wife of a wealthy Englishman and, despite powerful anti-German sentiments, Foyle focuses on treating the case as he would any other murder inquiry -- by rooting out the murderer and bringing them to justice. This is Foyle's strength and his Achilles' heel. As Foyle is so intent on justice, his superiors will not release him from his civic duties -- much to his chagrin. Foyle would rather be supporting the war effort by fighting in the front lines. To complicate matters, Foyle's son, Andrew, has signed up with the RAF as a pilot. Foyle's world is quickly unfurling through events that he cannot control, yet, ironically, he must maintain control in his district -- else chaos ensues. This intelligent and thoughtful series, and especially this premier episode, is highly recommended for viewers who enjoy a well-crafted mystery. In addition, they will be transported back to an incredibly dangerous and courageous time in world history by this realistically produced series.

Power Rangers SPD - Joining Forces (Vol. 1) (2005) Review

(More customer reviews)Let me start this review off by saying that if you've been disappointed in the past with the lack of Power Rangers DVDs, their content, and the quality, you have no need to fear any longer.
The plot: The year is 2020 and Earth is now home to humans and aliens alike. While 99% of the aliens live in peace, there's always 1% that can't. To deal with them, Earth enlists the help of a "Galactic Police Group" known as S.P.D., or "Space Patrol Delta." Early on S.P.D. is faced by an invasion force, and sends their A-Squad to the front lines, leaving only their B-Squad cadets to defend Earth.
As one would assume, the B-Squad Cadets are then given Ranger powers and the real story begins...
The show is well done from both a technical and artistic point of view, especially for a Power Rangers series. In the first episode simply titled "Beginnings" which is an hour long, we see three cadets who are still green behind the ears. These guys are not your perfect little Power Rangers the way they were in the older shows. One is fairly nervous, one is a bit ditzy, and one is naïve and obnoxiously arrogant. Likewise the final two Power Rangers aren't even your standard "goody-goody civilians" as in past years - they're street thieves! Clearly this group has its' vices, and they make the character's seem more realistic.
Following "Beginnings" (a 2-part episode) we see episode #3 which is called "Confronted." This episode is probably one of the weaker entries into the series, but it does have some high points, such as the Red and Blue Rangers' constantly locking heads. I mentioned an arrogant and naïve character before; that's Sky, the Blue Ranger. While his counterpart in Red isn't quite perfect either, he's far less obnoxious.
The next episode is called "Walls." While I find the episode interesting, and highly enjoyable, I repetitively find myself wanting to scream the words "SHUT UP SKY!" at my TV. Apparently this was the director's intent as the final scene of this episode has him scrubbing the outside of the Ranger's base with a toothbrush a la boot camp. I enjoyed that scene quite a lot, especially after Sky's constant kvetching about not being the Red Ranger.
The last episode on the disc is titled "Dogged." While it had the potential to be the worst episode of the season, it's just the opposite. It's funny, it's tragic, and it's one of the most well filmed and well-written episodes in the shows' history. The moral too the story is done in a very subtle way and looks more like a plot from "Star Trek" than from Power Rangers.
Technical Features: The menus on this DVD are better than that of past Power Rangers DVDs. Last season's menus were probably the worst I've seen in awhile. Disney owed us and they came through. The motion menus on this disc rival those of major motion pictures, including the new Star Wars Trilogy DVD Box. The average DVD Collector would be pleased.
In addition the Disc is encoded with Dolby Surround Sound. Playback on my TV through an S-Video cable using 4.1 THX Certified Speakers really pulls the surround sound to the foreground and shows how well this disc was made.
Extras: If you bought the early Power Rangers Ninja Storm DVDs, you probably scoffed at the extras, which were a bit of a joke, even for the target demographic. If you bought the Power Rangers Dino Thunder DVDs you probably felt the same way and wondered why two episodes of the previous season were deemed "extras" rather than a new disc. With Power Rangers S. P. D. however, the extras are pretty good. The first is based on those old "Join the ARMY" PSAs, and relates to joining S. P. D. - Disney includes a website URL for anyone interested. This is fairly humorous and I confess, I did enjoy it. The second extra is a "Zord Simulator," which is similar to an arcade style video game. Most people will probably complain that we still don't have deleted scenes, or "standard" extras, but given the target audience, this is probably a nice extra, and it beats the Dino Thunder virtual trading cards that couldn't be traded with anyone.
Packaging:
This is admittedly this DVDs weak spot; the packaging isn't even on par with what some fans have done for their collections. It looks like a five minute Photoshop job and for such a well-done DVD I would have expected better. In addition my first copy of this Disc (I purchased two of them.) was loose in its' case, a common problem with Buena Vista Home Entertainment DVDs. Especially Power Rangers DVDs which I've had to return on five occasions due to the disc not being pushed all the way into the center hub and being scratch upon purchase. Disney should fix this on future releases. Shake the case when you get the disc or you may find a nasty surprise when it's all scratched up as you open it. (Disney will replace the Discs for free though if you call them and pay for the shipping as well so it's not so much a loss as it is a nuisance.)
Additional notes:
When watching this DVD, long-time Power Rangers fans should be ready to look for some serious "in-jokes" - younger fans will appreciate them too if they view the Power Rangers Generations block on ABC Family. Here are a few things to watch out for:
- The A-Squad Power Rangers have the helmets from Power Rangers in Space with a slight modification made to them.
- Fans of the shows' Japanese counterpart will recognize the character of "Doggie Cruger" as a nod to his Japanese counterpart, "Doggie Kruger."
- The same man who wrote the original Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers theme song, Ron Aaron Wasserman, composed the theme song.
The Good: Five episodes on the first DVD for once. The show is excellent, and the DVD is better than I expected.
The Bad: Disney is still making "Mini-movies" rather than standard episode. The opening and ending credits have been lifted from every episode with the exception of Beginnings (opening credits) and Dogged (ending credits) having one set of credits. This is really a style issue, but it annoys me.
The Ugly: A packaging issue that has been a problem since Prelude to a Storm was release is still plaguing Power Rangers DVDs. I seriously hope Disney is trying to fix this, as it's a pretty common flaw.
Final verdict: If you're a Power Rangers fan, buy this DVD. If you're a parent, you won't be disappointed and you may find yourself enjoying this disc as well. DVD Collectors will most certainly have mixed feelings on this disc though, while young children and teenagers will most likely enjoy it. This is the best Power Rangers DVD release to date, satisfying younger and older fans alike. If you like this series, I recommend checking out Power Rangers Time Force which amazon.com also has for sale. It's only on VHS, but it's similar in style to Power Rangers S.P.D.

Undertaker Vs. Hulk Hogan (WWE Championship) - The Undertaker wins his first WWE title after being in the organization for only a year! Guest appearance from "Nature Boy" Ric Flair.
Undertaker Vs. Yokozuna (RIP)(WWE Championship Casket Match) - This ends up being more of a gang mugging as several WWE stars help out Yoko! Still significant as it shows the fighting spirit of UT in a losing effort.
Undertaker Vs. Diesel - This was from WrestleMania 12 and one of Kevin Nash's better bouts!
Undertaker Vs. Mankind (Buried Alive Match) - Foley, as usual, takes a beating from UT! UT wins the match but ends up getting buried alive by Mankind, The Executioner (Terry Gordy in a mask/RIP) and several other heels!
Undertaker Vs. Mankind (WWE Championship Match) - Undertaker had just won his second WWE title a month earlier. Foley takes another beating including a head first dive into a table!
Undertaker Vs. Bret Hart (WWE Championship Match) - "HBK" Shawn Michaels is the special referee in this one as this was otherwise a classic bout! Guest appearances from Paul Bearer, Owen Hart (RIP) and Brian Pillman (RIP). The ending leads up to the brief but brutal Michales/Undertaker feud!
BONUS MATCH: Undertaker Vs. Bret Hart from One Night Only in England! Awesome bout! Perhaps better than their Summerslam encounter.

Housewife, 49 (2006) Review

(More customer reviews)This drama is based on the diary of Nella Last, a Lancashire housewife who wrote for the Mass Observation survey, a social studies unit which still exists to this day with the aim of recording the daily lives of British citizens. At this time in history the project was new and advertised for candidates in the British Press, This is were the drama begins, with Nella wondering if the advert might of interest or use to her. Victoria Wood stars as Nella and is also the script writer for this drama. Better known in the UK for her compelling, sharpely observed, comedy, Wood clearly demonstrates her abilty to convey the complexity of historical life in both her writing and acting here (much as British audiences have seen in her focus on modern life in her varied comedy enterprises such as "As Seen on TV" and "Dinnerladies").
Nella Last is drifting at the start of the War, unhappy, roleless, with hints that Mental Breakdown have been part of her past and that she is confined by a stayed, emotionless marriage. The War changes her life in terms of giving her a means to express her emotional world in her writing, alongside finding a role as a volunteer in the WVS (Women's Voluntary Service, which has since become the Women's Royal Voluntary Service as a result of it's sterling WW2 work). The drama beautifully explores so many complexities of Nella's life, British social life in the 30's -40's and the massive amounts of change brought to so many lives as a result of WW2, particualrly the lives of Women. Of particular note in terms of the developing drama and human interest in the story are Nella's friendship with the WVS leader and the struggle Nella and she have to reconcile a genuine warmth and respect for each other alongside their differing class backgrounds and the power based struggles these divisions would normally dictate. Then there is the highly poignant and changing relationship she has with her son Cliff, a tender, loving relationship which becomes tainted by grief, loss, misunderstanding and the growing distance the war places between them. Excellent stuff and a real, gritty and honest exploration of the every day burden and far reaching effects of War on ordinary lives.

Bratz: Kidz Sleep-Over Adventure (2007) Review

(More customer reviews)This was WAY too Scary for little kids! The movie is about each Bratz telling a very scary story at a sleepover. It is deceptively packaged like it's about young kids and their fun first sleepover adventures, and isn't clear that this is all about being SCARED. Adult scary. My 4 year old who loved the other Bratz movies, HATES this movie & even told me to throw it away after she saw it. She thought this movie would be great since it was about "Baby Bratz." She adores Scooby Doo, so there is a big difference in this movie.) She has never said that about anything else. Just what we needed, new frightening thoughts - your image in the mirror pulling you in and trapping you, etc. It may be fine for older kids who don't have any fear issues, but if you have any trouble with your little ones fears, particularly if they are starting to sleep alone, get scared at night or have anxiety about their first sleepover, please pick something else! It may have a moral somewhere, but they are so terrified, they'll never figure it out! What were they thinking?

Sunrise Earth: Seaside Collection (2007) Review

(More customer reviews)I've been a fan of Sunrise Earth since I discovered it a few years ago on Discovery HD. Back then I used to try to save as many episodes as I could on the HD cable DVR. That proved to be stressful because HD shows eat a lot of space, even with the external hard drive. It was hard to decide which ones to save and let go.
Now it has arrived on Blu-ray in all its 1080 HD glory. On my Sony 46" LCD, the shots look slightly cleaner on disc than they do on the channel (no compression or pixelation). It is 5.1 surround-sound camera mic recording too. Great photos on each disc in the collection too.
When there's a movie or a show you really love, nothing's better than owning a physical copy of it in the best resolution possible!
They is another collection called "Sunrise Earth:American Sunrises"! It was released in late 2007. I will be looking forward to getting that one on Blu-ray too. For some reason it's DVD format-only at most places except the Discovery website.

The DVD release is a show hosted by comedian/musician Demetri Martin. In February 2009, "Important Things with Demetri Martin" scored Comedy Central's most watched premiere for the network with 2.4 million total viewers since 2003 ("Chappelle's Show" drew 2.5 million). The show is produced by Jon Stewart's Busboy Productions and One Verse, Inc. and is probably one of the freshest comedy half-hour comedy show I have seen in a long while.
Demetri Martin, known for his deadpan humor starts off his show with jokes (stand-up comedy) but then integrates sketch comedy segments with other actors, animation and he's also a talented musician who can play the guitar, keyboard, harmonica and who knows how many other instruments and also, you get actual sketches, word play and other things that you probably would never imagine seeing in a show. Sure, "Saturday Night Live" may also have similar type of things that we see on "Important Things with Demetri Martin" but its the execution that makes this series quite entertaining and fun.
The show is built around a certain topic and for the first season, there are a total of seven episodes (each episode are 21 minutes long) that are featured on this DVD. Included are (spoiler-less summaries):
* Timing - The topic of the episode is timing and stand-up comedy that revolve around timing. Sketch comedy include a scene featuring Amanda Peet and Demetri Martin in which Martin has trouble showcasing his anger during a drama scene but off-camera he has a lot of anger, a police officer who raids the wrong home, "What?" Slam Poet Champion, Jerry Pappas: Time Gigolo (a gigolo who uses a time machine and using his knowledge to get with women in the past), a guy early to a rave and two guys in a dungeon. Also, included are Demetri's drawings and one of the coolest music performances by Demetri Martin (playing a guitar, harmonica, bells, keyboard, tambourine while showcasing jokes on a tablet).
* Power - The topic of the episode is about power and stand-up comedy revolving around power. Sketches include Parking War - two men arguing over a parking spot, a yellow belt opening a package of headphones and another with the yellow belt fighting depression, a superhero sketch titled "Revenger", Creedocide (how to kill rats in your home) and Demetrocles. Drawings plus a musical performance by Demetri.
* Brains - The topic of the episode is about brains and stand-up comedy revolving around brains. Sketch comedy include a man who gets to eat at T.G.I.F. with Benjamin Franklin, Shakespeare and Galileo, "What?" Slam Poet Champion, Dadz, a genius and an idiot, Early Important Fairy Tales - The Royal Food Taster and Demetrocles.
* Games - The topic of the episode is about games and stand-up comedy revolving around games. Sketch comedy segments include Devin Cottonfield - Emotional Escape Artist, Annihilator board game, Men's passive aggressive race, humans pranking birds in "Nuthouse" and Da Mici.
* Chairs - The topic of the episode is about chairs and stand-up comedy revolving around chairs. Sketch comedy segments include Employees talking bad about their bosses at the urinals (while their bosses are in the toilet overhearing them), a yellow belt trying to relax on a beach chair and another segment with the yellow belt fighting gravity, a man who must make a decision - sit with the beautiful woman or next to old man, Demotrocles and the origin of gum found under a chair.
* Safety - The topic of the episode is about safety and stand-up comedy revolving around safety. Sketch comedy segments include Spring Haven - Home for the Elderly, An S&M Couple whose safe word is..., pube-safe home security, Health Class 1231 A.D., a man with a neck brace, a scientist who needs to deactivate a proton accelerator but forgot to bring his security ID and Early Important Fairy Tales - The Royal Food Taster.
* Coolness - The topic of the episode is about coolness and stand-up comedy revolving around coolness. Sketch comedy segments include Hoodwinkers Inc., dadz, man with a dragon tattoo on his face, the shower cap with hair, Da Mici and two men in a dungeon. Also, a musical performance by Demetri Martin.
VIDEO & AUDIO:
"Important Things with Demetri Martin" is featured in full screen and audio is in Dolby Digital.
Video quality is a mix bag as some scenes are shot with a variety of video. But for the most part, the video quality is well-done and the audio is clear and understandable. For audio, my preference for my receiver setting was stereo on all channels and as a comedy DVD, it was good to see the audience responsive to the jokes.
There are no subtitles included on this DVD.

JUDGMENT CALL:
This is probably one of the most entertaining Comedy Central DVD's that I have had the opportunity to review.
What I enjoy about Demetri Martin's comedy is his deadpan humor. The man is a quick thinker and for those who have caught his comedy routines, his improvisation on stage is very cool. But what makes "Important Things with Demetri Martin" is that he and his writers really think outside of the box in trying to present a show that is different from what anyone has seen before. Granted, I'm sure coming up with topics can be challenging but for the most part, he is able to pull it off.
The whole execution of the show was fun to watch. The stand-up comedy, the drawings, the music and of course the sketch comedy segments are hilarious but also included are these short segments that take place before or after a commercial which are cool and also during the stand-up comedy, you will see text written on the audience. It's just something that is quite different and for the most part, the presentation is quite fresh. Even the sketch comedy, these are topics that you won't see on "Saturday Night Live" or other shows.
The DVD is full of bonus features and after watching the bonus features which some include outtakes, I was surprised to find commentary for many of the episodes and that was pretty awesome. One of the things that surprised me was listening to the commentary and hearing that some jokes are conceived on the show within minutes of the show starting or created during a break. But also to hear some of the behind-the-scene commentary on how the sketch comedy scenes were conceived was quite fun to listen to. Especially learning why Demetri Martin wears the same clothing, mainly because some segments work with the audience and some don't and they can shuffle scenes around for different episodes if needed. And some of those scenes that didn't go so well with the audience make it into the special features segment. Another interesting thing, maybe not so major but pretty cool to see, is that the menu is interactive (which Demetri Martin makes comments during a selection) which was pretty cool.
"Important Things with Demetri Martin" is definitely one of the best Comedy Central DVD's that I have ever seen (and I have seen many). Seven solid episodes, a lot of special features and bonus items and pretty much, a complete DVD that doesn't really skimp on anything.
Fans of Demetri Martin or those curious about this DVD, you will not be disappointed and frankly, you'll be getting your money's worth with this DVD release. "Important Things with Demetri Martin" is highly recommended!

(More customer reviews)"Unscripted" was shot periodically throughout 2004 aired on HBO in early 2005, featuring snapshots of life-everything from the mundane to the comic relief-- life of its three actors (Krista Allen, Bryan Greenberg, and Jennifer Hall.
The first five episodes of "Unscripted" were directed by George Clooney, and this part of the series more closely mirrors reality, while the last five are directed by Grant Heslov and have more of a narrative flow. The last five episode feel aware of themselves; they make a conscious effort to tell a story from start to finish and not just follow around three separate individuals. However, instances here are created and therefore feel fictional and almost forced. HBO audiences, although thought of as smarter than your average sitcom audience, still had trouble figuring out which parts of "Unscripted" were real and which were fake. It feels like a reality show, but it is not one; the actors all play charicatures of themselves. Character actors like Jane Lynch even guest star in roles other than themselves. "Unscripted" blurs the line and does it efficiently...it's just a shame more people didn't understand that.
The problem audiences seem to have found with "Unscripted" is the fact that the show is not airbrushed by the glittery, glamorous Hollywood lens is where people will be surprised. Since it is a Section 8 endeavor, the shots are each highly stylized: the handheld camerawork and corner frame shots all scream with Soderbergh's influence. The dialogue is all unscripted but based on actual situations, so early comparisons to "Curb Your Enthusiasm" were made. And because of that, audiences will undoubtedly tune in and expect a half an hour over-the-top comedy about struggling actors. They will want overly dramatic situations and laughable one-liner responses by the heroes. And while there are some funnier moments (such as when Greenberg is caught by a Casting Director who cast a pilot he claims he was in), that is not what they are going to get. And that does not make it a boring show: such is life. This is a hard hitting, gritty, behind-the-scenes look at show business, and it's not always pretty or ideal. These actors are struggling, and sometimes suffering because of it, and we are brought along for every voyeuristic minute of the silently painful ride.
Saying nothing is profound, and Clooney found pure gold: to watch Krista's face rise and then fall as she realizes the perfect part she thought she was getting she is not, and then rise again, as guest star Garry Marshall says he wants her son for a role in his new project, is just priceless. No words are needed; the range of emotion (from excitement to disappointment to pride) on her face says it loud and clear. And if your heart doesn't break just a little for her in that moment, you have no soul. For someone who has been working for ten years to rid herself of the "sex symbol" role and be taken serious as an actress...well, "Unscripted" proves all she had to do was be herself.
Whereas, the general audience is used to sugarcoated doses of "celeb-reality" such as "It's Good To Be" or "Entetainment Tonight," "Unscripted" does not showcase superficial benefits to stardom. Actually, it is the exact opposite: so audiences might feel like they are being cheated, and perhaps they are. They are being cheated of that façade that everything is perfect and every actor is a multi-millionaire. The one small disappointment for this reviewer is that they decided to cut out most of the anti-Rumsfeld material shot. But still, to me, that kind of honest look at the industry is the very reason the show is a success.
Furthermore, Frank Langella, playing the trio's acting teacher, offers most of the show's voice over, and if his words sound like the words of the God of Acting...well, they should. Clooney allows Langella to flow with guidance because he is the type of teacher we all wish we could have had in school (and the lucky ones did have). He is the Mr. Feeny for today's generation: his seasoned advice applies not only to acting, but to life in general, and every viewer can take away some of his wisdom and apply it to his or her own life. Langella keeps Allen, Greenberg, and Hall grounded and focused, proving that acting is a profession that needs work, just like anything else.
If this show teaches you nothing about Hollywood-its inner workings or its image-it teaches you that actors are just people, too, and at the end of the day, they need to feel good about the work they do. "Unscripted" is a refreshing change for Hollywood, in that regard: it has single-handedly torn down the unattainable barrier between the "actor" and the "regular person." All three (Allen, Greenberg, Hall) have the audience rooting for them to succeed. "Unscripted" (re?)humanizes the way we think of the famous.

If one is interested in becoming a victor instead of just another victim, I strongly urge you to get and watch this video.

Many of the mystical/magical episodes are framed as a mythology or as the characters jumping into a book. This DVD does not present it that way. The first episode is longer and strongly magic themed, the other two are not.

Diego's Safari Rescue: Elephants are turned into stone by a mosquito-turned-sorceress. Diego, Alicia and Baby Jaguar go to Africa to help Juma find a magic drum to turn them back. In the English version the episode has mixed in Spanish and Swahili words which seemed to be too many. My toddler was getting used to learning the Spanish words, but an extra language as well as the Spanish seemed a little overwhelming--he didn't repeat either language that episode.
Panchita the Praire Dog: Diego and Alicia help a prairie dog find a place to resettle her family.
Jorge the Little Hawk Learns to Migrate: Jorge the Hawk gets separated from the adult hawks; so Diego helps him out with his Hawk plane.

(More customer reviews)Fans of the show will definitely want to add this season to their collection. Don't worry if you haven't watched the show before; Mike Rowe's narration adds enough information about the crews, crab fishing, and their past experiences to keep a new viewer from getting lost.
It's all here; Blake's rookie season, Phil's frustrations with his ships AND his offspring-turned-crew, the breathtaking Man Overboard rescue by the Time Bandit....
"Deadliest Catch" is reality tv at its best. We're given working-class heroes as a "cast" instead of what a network thinks is hip and photogenic, and VERY REAL danger. The tragedies of the ships Big Valley and Ocean Challenger make the title more than "watch this kids" melodrama; good, ordinary people have lost their lives. (And, lest anyone think this is exploitive - far from it. The tragedies are shown by the filmmakers for what they are - heartbreaking grief and loss).
I never thought about the danger and backbreaking work it took to get that seafood dinner onto my plate. As you watch the show, be sure to say a prayer for the men and women who have made the sea their life and career.

I'm Puerto Rican and I think Mencia is hysterical, especially the way he rants against stupidity without regard to race, creed, color or national origin. He and Chapelle are cut from the same cloth, but their styles are distinct.
Yes, he is not afraid to offend, very refreshing in an era of bocorrectness, and joins the ranks of Lenny Bruce and Richard Pryor, who raised many an eyebrow. I'm anxiously awaiting season two.

Not Only but Always... (2005) Review

(More customer reviews)It's hard to know where to begin discussing this film. It's supposed to be a biography of Peter Cook and Dudley Moore, one of Britain's finest comedy double acts, but anyone not already familiar with their life and work together will have little idea what is going on. Understanding is not helped by the director's artsy (and somewhat lazy) device of using the duo's black and white tv personas Pete 'n Dud to narrate the film and vainly try to fill in its many gaps. In the end, we have a somewhat limited impression of the two men, highlighted by elaborate and rather good impersonations of them, but not quite total performances.
Cook and Moore first found fame in the early 60's as two of the four performers of the ground breaking satirical revue Beyond The Fringe. The two of them continued to work together for a number a years, most notably on British television but also in films and occasional two-man theatre shows that were basically re-workings of their established routines. I remember seeing them in Washington in the 70's when they were doing their "Good Evening" tour. It was a wonderful performance but even more remarkable if we are to believe what this film shows going on behind the scenes at the time.
Like too many "biopics", this film pushes the comedians' actual work into the sidelines and prefers to concentrate on the tired old "tortured soul beneath the comic mask" theme. Thus it becomes hard to see why these two performers should be remembered at all. The film is a curious paradox of, on one hand, trying to cram too much in and, on the other, leaving so much out. We have only the briefest of glimpses of their work (and, it must be said, the routines are not re-created with any of the original magic). Entire chunks of their careers are overlooked - they would appear never to have made any films together other than "Bedazzled", Moore's musical career is completely diminished to a brief onstage bit but otherwise his piano playing seems only to be a way of pulling the birds, Cook's subsequent solo career is largely ignored. And yet the Derek And Clive phase seems to be given far too much prominence. Other personalities are merely hinted at in passing or else awkwardly pop up at odd moments ("Hi, I'm Blake Edwards").
Probably the film's best ingredient is the uncanny performances of the two leads - Rhys Ifans as Peter Cook and Aidan McArdle as Dudley Moore. They all have the speech patterns, mannerisms and body language down perfectly (although I felt Ifans lacked Cook's mischievous twinkle in his eye) but the disjointed script doesn't give them much chance to develop any real characterisations. Motivations such as why Moore put up with Cook for so long (assuming he was the monster the film portrays) are left unanswered. Other performances of well-known figures are basically caricatures with Jonathan Aris as Jonathan Miller particularly going over the top. Jodie Rimmer as Cook's wife Wendy manages to elicit a bit of sympathy in a largely two-dimensional role.
In the end, the film is vaguely interesting but hugely disappointing. Back in the early 60's, recordings of Beyond The Fringe (and The Goon Show) were my introduction to the weird and wonderful world of British comedy. The cliche that all those comic geniuses were tortured souls underneath may well be true. But it's the comedy that lasts, not the tantrums and squabbles that went on behind the scenes. For anyone interested in Peter Cook and Dudley Moore, I would suggest seeking out their actual work rather than this sad shadow.
