As someone who worked in the Alaska commerical fisheries for years, and on crab boats in the Bering Sea out of Dutch Harbor during the early 90s, I really appreciate this series which has given this worthy, but dangerous, occupation the notoriety it deserves. This was the hardest, most dangerous work I ever did, inclusive of my period of military service, in which several of my friends lost their lives; it is an occupation that all who have participated in can have great pride in. One point needs to be made, however, which is that conditions are a little safer than they were before with the advent of the quota system which lets boats choose their weather some (although I think the TV producers may be goading fishers to push the limit more than they otherwise would). Previously it was a free for fall that started on January 15th. A good book to read in conjunction with viewing this series is Spike Walker's "Working on the Edge."

I love this show and to be honest I'm really not sure why. I'm not a big fisher, crabber, or boater, but I absolutely love this show and the guys on this show. I also like that Mike Rowe narrates the show. Deadliest Catch has knocked my other favorite shows out of the way. I press the "pause" button on my life when the show comes on, nothing keeps me from watching......... I'm hooked !

I am a huge fan of this show, and this is where it all started. The first season is sort of different than the rest of the series, but it includes some in-depth coverage of a disaster at sea when a boat goes down and most of the crew is lost. It is very compelling, and after watching it I was immediately hooked on the show.

Join Captain Rick Mezich and the crew of The Fierce Allegiance as they work the frigid waters between Russia and Alaska during the brutal '99 snow crab season, a season that took the lives of seven good men. Crab fishing in the middle of winter off the coast of Alaska is extremely dangerous. On average, one man will die every week, sent to a watery grave by rogue waves and sinking ships. Why do they do it? Perhaps because crab fishing is thought to be one of the last great gold rushes in the world. In a good year, an experienced deck hand working the short, eight-week season can bring home almost $50,000. But this isn't easy money. Crushed fingers, crippled hands, cracked ribs and broken feet are common in this working environment where the injury rate stands at almost one hundred percent. Now the hair-raising reality adventure comes to DVD in this thrilling 5-DVD set containing all 10 episodes.

Fans of the show will definitely want to add this season to their collection. Don't worry if you haven't watched the show before; Mike Rowe's narration adds enough information about the crews, crab fishing, and their past experiences to keep a new viewer from getting lost.
It's all here; Blake's rookie season, Phil's frustrations with his ships AND his offspring-turned-crew, the breathtaking Man Overboard rescue by the Time Bandit....
"Deadliest Catch" is reality tv at its best. We're given working-class heroes as a "cast" instead of what a network thinks is hip and photogenic, and VERY REAL danger. The tragedies of the ships Big Valley and Ocean Challenger make the title more than "watch this kids" melodrama; good, ordinary people have lost their lives. (And, lest anyone think this is exploitive - far from it. The tragedies are shown by the filmmakers for what they are - heartbreaking grief and loss).
I never thought about the danger and backbreaking work it took to get that seafood dinner onto my plate. As you watch the show, be sure to say a prayer for the men and women who have made the sea their life and career.

Deadliest Catch: Season 2 (3pc) (2005) Review

Deadliest Catch is one of those shows that rapidly becomes compulsive viewing. The way the show is done is anything but repetitive, even though the goal is always the same - crab. In this season, we get to watch the interplay between the crews under extremely icy conditions; and thankfully it is nothing like the so called "reality TV". This is true to life stuff, nobody is trying to be a hero and some don't even quite make it. The harsh realities of this deadliest job keep you on the edge of your seat for hours on end, and you'll find yourself laughing at moments such as the FV Time Bandit effectively going surfing. What you are really observing is a fascinating insight into these guys' lives, and just what they do to make a living. Alot of people will warm to the personalities of people like Sig Hansen and his brother Edgar; for some inexplicable reason everyone loves the FV Northwestern. Mike Rowe does the narration for this series as usual (also spawning millions who all say in their deepest voice "The vast Bering Sea"), and as usual the narration explains very well what is happening. Good choice of background music which adds to the tension of what is happening. Overall, thoroughly enjoyable. I watched 5 minutes of this show on TV and changed the channel, the next week I watched it and was completely hooked. Can't wait for season 3 to be released now.
