**MAY CONTAIN SLIGHT SPOILERS*
"Point Pleasant" is a gothic soap opera created by Marti Noxon, best known as the woman who writes great depressing stories on The WB's "Buffy the Vampire Slayer". I am a huge fan of "Buffy" and "Angel", but I personally enjoy "Point Pleasant" better.
Now don't get me wrong. This show has serious problems, it's biggest one being that the pilot was specially designed to best ensure a pickup by FOX. It has many elements of "The OC" and FOX was right in thinking it would work best with "The OC" compared to the other shows on their schedule.
"Point Pleasant" has loads of potential. Everything is there. A great premise, capable actors, beautiful locations, character backstories, everything that was there could have become a huge ongoing battle between good and evil, with the forces of heaven and hell battling on Earth. And I do believe that's what it would have become if the writers were able to run with it.
What 13 episodes there are, however, are still good even with their faults. The actors aren't exactly award-winners, but they get the job done quite nicely. Elisabeth Harnois, our protaganist, is the perfect choice for the daughter of Satan and a God-fearing woman. She's beautiful, and usually angelic but can become overcome with her hellborn powers in an instant. Harnois is good at instant transitions and I love the scenes where her character knows that she's too weak to drown her evil nature but doesn't know what to do. Anyway, the series opens up on Point Pleasant, New Jersey, although we're not sure if this is Point Pleasant or the town of Point Pleasant Beach. There's a difference. But it's a nice day with hot girls sunbathing on the beach, but an otherwordly storm quickly gathers and runs everyone off the beach. Jesse, a young lifeguard, spots something floating in the ocean and swims out. It's Christina. He takes her to the Kramers since the roads are closed so the doctor can look at her.
Soon Christina is living with the Kramers, and befriends their daughter Judy, whose older sister died years earlier. Her mother still has not gotten over it.
The show begins to shed its allusions of "The OC" immediately, although it does not completely do so until about the fifth episode. We see the characters evolve. The town whore soon stops her ways and tries to make things right, the love triangles become actually important to the actual story, etc. The series uses LOTS of symbolism and is very, very smart with it, proving that it is not the shallow waste of time people claim it to be.
The character relationships and the things that happen are important to whether the townspeople will be on the side of evil or the side of good. Judy's mother realizes that she is not crazy like people believe, but she has a connection with the spirit world and may be psychic. We also discover that Jesse died as a child but came back, and he is destined to kill Christina, the Antichrist, even though they have an unbearable attraction for one another. This adds much flavor and promise to the show, as Christina does not WANT to be evil and tries fighting it, yet people keep having visions of what she's destined to do to the town, and it's not pleasant. (Pun not intended.)
As different as the two shows are, "Point Pleasant" could be compared to "Dark Shadows". Both are a part of an extremely rare breed. How many gothic/horror soaps appear on television? Not many at all. "Dark Shadows", both the 60s and 90s versions, are also favorites of mine. And the short-lived CBS horror drama "American Gothic" was similar in style to "Point Pleasant", so if you like those shows you might want to check out "Point Pleasant".
Other things I'd like to point out is the EXCELLENT music used in the opening title sequence. It was written by Danny Elfman, who also did the "Desperate Housewives" theme song and has done nearly every Tim Burton film. The music used throughout the show, while not written by Elfman, is also good and sets up the atmosphere nicely. The filmwork is also nice, and looks great in widescreen, and a blue film is used quite a bit and it can be effective.
Overall the show is good, but it's no surprise many "Buffy" fans were displeased, because the two shows are completely different. However, if you are into dark, religious themed shows and movies or you just like creepy supernatural adventures, "Point Pleasant" is definitely worth a buy or rent.

I loved this film; I kind of wish it would get the Oscars; Unfortunately, it was originally aired on TV: You have these two boys born on the same day; One is black and the other is white; They hook up and become the best of friends; Yet, this is 1940s Georgia; And the black boy's sister gets pregnant presumably by her white employer, then someone turns up dead and things get right ugly. Dean Cain plays the sheriff, who just coming back from WW2, wants to see the right thing done, yet, the prejudices of the time seem to want to stay the same although clearly, times were a-changing; Maya Angelou has a pivotal role as a seer; You can't help but love watching her especially when she hollers "Justice Is Served" in the courtroom. Debbie Morgan, a great yet underrated actress has the role of the black boy's mother; And a performance she gives indeed. A good Hallmark movie indeed;

Unlike the earlier mis-titled "Season 1" DVD that was released in the US a couple of years ago, this Australian import actually contains all the episodes from the real first season of Baywatch when it was an NBC network series. There's no Pamela Anderson or Alexandra Paul. Instead we have former Miss USA Shawn Weatherly, the beautiful Holly Gagnier, and the show's original Playboy playmate, Erica Eleniak. Long-time viewers who miss the flamboyant characters of the later syndicated seasons will have to console themselves with David Hasselhoff's extremely gay hairdo, which was in full bloom even at this early stage. The six-disk set offers absolutely no extras (the episode titles appear in an unnumbered list on the case, and the only way to tell which disk each one is on is to count them off in groups of four), but the hard-case package is good. The quality of the 4x3 video is adequate, but this collection will be a welcome addition to anyone who was interested in the first season of the show.

MTV's Pimp My Ride - The Complete First Season (2004)

I disagree with Amazon's reviewer, this might be your mothers TV show too. My wife and I stumbled on this series one weekend last year. We were impressed how this hardcore looking rapper Xzibit chose people who didn't have the means to fix up there cars to pimp. After watching a couple episodes on TV I was hooked. The people they helped seemed like good people that deserved a break. I couldn't believe the transformation of these cars from mostly wrecks to major eye catching street machines. Now let me first point out that my wife and I are in our fifties and neither of us are fans of rap. It was Xzibits hysterical warm personality, the West Coast Customs unusual and funny crew, and the premise of what MTV and West Coast Customs were trying to accomplish that got our attention and kept it. Sure this is a TV show, but you can't help thinking they really are trying to do somehthing nice. I have even considered buying one of Xzibits CDs.
Does this show give Xzibit, MTV, and West Coast Customs good PR? You bet, but it goes a bit further. For example when one kids car was so bad off it was unsafe to pimp, they didn't say sorry we can't help you out, they bought him a new car and pimped it out. Perhaps this is all just an attempt for ratings, but a part of me wants to think they are really having fun and they enjoy helping people in the process. This first season set comes in a small neon green case and the DVDs are in very slender cases. Several extras, most which are fun to watch except for the one deleted scene of the car being driven around without doors for what seemed forever. I recommend this set to anyone young or old with an interest in cars. That or anyone it warms to see some broke student get their car customized to the tune of about $20,000 and not cost them a dime.
Now if we can just get them to do a spin-off where they pimp the rides of middle-class to upper income families on the East coast. I think they should call it "Pimp My Ride Too" or "Pimp My Parent". I realize my wife and I have good incomes in the computer and pharmacy industry, but we do help others and I'm sure our friends and children would tell you we are nice people. If you want to widen the audience base, you need to widen your demographics and selection of rides to pimp. I have a 2002 Grand Prix GTP that is in good shape so it shouldn't be as hard to fix up. Please Xzibit, "Pimp My Ride Too"!

In each episode of PIMP MY RIDE, rapper-turned-host Xzibit surprises an owner of an old, beat up car by telling them he’s going to "pimp their ride" and transform it into something completely different.Joining Xzibit are the West Coast Customs crew, consisting of founder Ryan, manager Q, accessories man Big Dane, interiors specialist Ish, creator of off-the-wall electrical concepts Mad Mike and wheel and tire expert Alex.Exteriors are painted flashy colors, holes in upholstery are replaced with brand new seat covers, installation of DVD players and video game systems, a goldfish tank, an espresso machine, a ping-pong table, a bamboo floor, and a karaoke machine are only a few of the crazy things that make each car unique. With the crew’s hard work and creative and original ideas, old, rusty cars are transformed into one-of-a-kind masterpieces. No longer ashamed to drive on the road, the owners drive in style in their uniquely customized rides.

Gormenghast (2000) Review

Gormenghast (2000)
Average Reviews:

I've seen this in England, and I can faithfully vouch for the fact that yes, the first two volumes of Mervyn Peake's masterpiece trilogy have finally been accorded their due on the screen. I should start by warning fans of the novels that the Gormenghast realized here is much prettier than you would expect; perhaps the film's producers were worried that a vision of the giant castle and its environs as decayed and yellowed as Peake imagined might be too offputting to anyone but fans of the novels? As a result, Gormenghast is slightly too pretty at times to convey the sense of Gothic dissolution Peake intended: even the campsite of the carvers seems gussied up in pretty green decor. And in the central role of Steerpike Jonathan Rhys-Meyers looks smashing and works hard, but fails to turn in the truly bravura performance the part requires (in part because he lacks tremendous physical presence, despite his sneering beauty).
On the other hand, so much is given to us in this version that it would be churlish to complain. Celia Imrie steals the show as the brutally abstract and terrifyingly towering Countess of Groan: she has both the presence and the ability to play the role. The great Fiona Shaw transforms herself exactly into Peake's sketches of Irma Prunesquallor, and Zoe Wanamaker and Lynsey Baxter do something very original and believable as Titus's half-witted and murderous aunts. The special effects are at times jawdropping, and at times the director allows for the off-kilter camera angles--and yes, even the Gothic atmnosphere otherwise missing--that brings you back to Peake's original vision (the library sequence is particularly smashing). This is the kind of adaptation that, even with its few flaws, one would never have dared hope to have seen.

Beginning with a comical account of how the USA's government agencies "keep the faith" of the people,(i.e killing off anyone who can be seen as dangerous), Lexx fans are reunited with Prince, the evil ruler of the planet Fire from Season 3. Now an ATF agent, Prince basically controls the presidency (as well as the entire counrty) and characters from seasons 2 and 3 are once again resurrected (remember Brock from Gametown and Prince's stooge Priest?) to start off the fourth season. Highly entertaining and incredibly funny, the show picks up right where it left off.In "Little Blue Planet" Priest becomes the president of the United States, Lexx eats a South American rain forest, and Prince sends three Russian killers, who are obsessed with fingernails, up to the Lexx. In "Texx Lexx" Kai and Xev get separated on Earth, while Stan underestimates Prince and ends up a prisoner of the ATF. Xev is so desperate she's willing to have sex with even the grungiest of old men and Kai runs into a goofy cult. In "P4X" Xev is seuxally exploited by that weird girl from Twilight (Season 2), later is rescued by Kai, and Prince tries to get the key from Stan with a rather interesting result. Stan finally escapes in "Stan Down" with the help of Priest, who wants the presidency for himself and is sick of his wife's complaining. His wife (think Love Grows and, I think, Twilight) finds out the hard way that Prince is not to be reckoned with as Prince, Priest, and the first lady all go for a nice ride on famous little street in Dallas.

This DVD of a comedy show was somewhat raunchy, but very funny. Monique was a little over the top with the "n" word, especially in the beginning. If that bothers you, then you might not like thid DVD. Its not used super liberally as far as I can remember, and all the comedians on this DVD are bright and very funny. I enjoyed this very much. Probably not for kids under 15 though because of sexual nature of some jokes. One comedian makes some very good points about African American culture that is quite serious and is controversial, but sure is thought provoking. Good DVD.

Get Smart: Season 2 (2009) Review

Get Smart: Season 2 (2009)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Smart. Maxwell Smart. The dumbest spy in the world, who fights on behalf of the forces of goodness and niceness, and succeeded in making democracy vs. communism a lot more entertaining. And the second season of spies, lies and kookiness only gets funnier, with Don Adams and Barbara Feldon continuing to save the free world.
Don Adams is Agent 86, Maxwell Smart, a not-so-bright spy with an endless arsenal of strange devices and odd sayings. The bumbling spy at a top-secret government agency called Control, which tirelessly works to keep the free world free. He's accompanied by his capable partner/love interest Agent 99 (Barbara Feldon), and overseen by the long-suffering Chief (Eward Platt) who puts up with Smart's constant mistakes.
The second season starts off rockily, with KAOS reprogramming Hymie to murder the Chief, and soon they step up their attacks against CONTROL: KAOS's new leader Siegfried (Bernie Kopell) kidnaps the Chief, and Max responds by kidnapping KAOS's top assassin... unfortunately sparking off a bunch of revenge kidnappings, until nobody is left at either organization.
As the season goes on, Max encounters new obstacles and plots against the free world -- he fakes his death, impersonates a safecracker, goes to Casablanca, tries to solve serial killings in the tropics, works in a circus, suffers amnesia, and is pursued by an evil big game hunter, a la "The Most Dangerous Game."
And what's more, and 99 have to deal with art thieves, submarines, mummies, beauty pageants, Arab princes, mouthy KAOS parrots, CONTROL being closed down, smiling killers, bronze paint, the Choker, going to jail, and a seductive woman who may be the dismantlement of Hymie.
The important development of "Get Smart's" second season is that Max finally gets a regular nemesis. As Holmes had his Moriarty, so Max has his Siegfried: a heel-cracking German with an exuberant sidekick, and a catchphrase of his own ("Ve don't ____ here!"). Siegfried isn't in every episode, but he crops up often enough to be worth noting.
Basically, the second season polishes up the kooky spy antics of the first, with more slapstick antics, delightfully weird problems (Max as head of the CONTROL workers' union?), and movie homages ("Goldfinger," "The Most Dangerous Game," "Casablanca"). Not to mention those wonderfully improbable gadgets ("Why hide a tape recorder in a camera and a camera in a tape recorder? Why not just take pictures with the camera, and record with the recorder?" "Because my mind doesn't work that way, that's why!").
Don Adams is the heart of the series, with his quirky face, nasal voice, odd body language and confident catchphrases ("And loving it!"). Max is not your usual inept spy -- he's confident that he's suave and competant, and somehow this carries him through to the end. Barbara Feldon plays a wonderful straight woman to Max's goofiness, while Edward Platt is just wonderful as the long-suffering Chief.
As for the new characters: Kopell is hysterical as "Zigfried," an excitable Germanic KAOS agent who is constantly thwarted by Max, which tends to upset him. David Ketchum is introduced as the aptly named Agent 13, an unlucky guy who is always hiding in tiny unpleasant spaces (garbage cans, freezers).
"Get Smart" didn't get smarter in its second season, but it definitely got better, especially with the introduction of Siegfried. Definitely a must see, for fans of spies and madcap comedy.

Threshold - The Complete Series (2005)
Average Reviews:

"Threshold" reminded me of something Norm from Cheers said in an episode; "It's a dog-eat-dog world and I'm wearing Milkbone underwear". The networks put Milkbone underwear on a lot of their TV shows metaphorically speaking and if they can't get a large audience they get thrown to the dogs. CBS cancelled the show far too soon as the show only aired 8 of its 12 episodes (the pilot was a double length episode). The good news for fans is that when the producers found out the show was being cancelled they were in the middle of shooting the last episode ("Alienville")and this allowed them to rewrite the ending to provide a conclusion (of sorts)to the series.
**Caution some minor spoilers ahead for those who haven't seen the show*** Skip the next three short paragraphs. For those that haven't seen the show the premise is very powerful allowing for suspense and very effective; an alien probe with 4 or 5 dimensional properties shows up. It's signal effects the crew altering their DNA from our normal double helix rewriting the DNA of the crew into a triple helix. It's an alien invasion done by making US the aliens.
Dr. Molly Caffrey (Carla Gugino best known from "Spy Kids" and "Sin City")created a protocol for first contact including hostile first contact. She assembles a team of top notch scientists in their field including Dr. Nigel Fenwya (Brent Spiner of "Star Trek:The Next Generation"); Lucas Pegg (Robert Patrick Benedict from "Felicity") a brilliant physicists and designer for NASA; Arthur Ramsey (Peter Dinklage "Elf" and from the film "Find Me Guilty")a brilliant mathematician and linguist and covert ops agent Sean Vavennaugh (Brian Van Holt from "S.W.A.T." and "Black Hawk Down"). They form the basis with Assistant Secretary of Defense J.T. Baylock (Charles S. Dutton)of "Red Team" whose job is to identify the threat, find out the aliens agenda and neutralize them.
The USS Big Horn's crew is infected with many of them dying while others develop superhuman strength, rapid healing abilities and all share a dream of the alien world and race that wants to "Bioform" humanity and terraform our planet for their own purposes. Suddenly Red Team has an outbreak on their hands and they must capture the sailors before they can infect others. The fact that the sailors choose multiple paths of infection make their job that much more difficult. When various members of their team accidently experience some level of infection it gives them a link to the aliens but also could potential pose a danger to the team.
**End of potential spoilers***
Well written, with top notch acting, writing and direction the show may have suffered from an inconsistent tone as the show was looking to establish its identity but towards the end of the run the show truly did find its voice. Unfortunately the best episodes of the series (the last four) never aired at all and fans of the series are in for a real treat. It's a pity this show wasn't given a chance (the producers had a three year story arc planned out)but what we do get provides for a marvelous and entertaining "mini-series".
The DVD comes with some very nice extras for such a short lived series. We get a four part documentary on the making of the show from the origin of the concept, through casting, the planned story arc and other elements. We also get a good featurette on the visual effects of the show. There's also an Easter Egg. Finally we get a very good featurette with science advisor/producer/writer Andre Bormanis ("Star Trek: The Next Generation") discussing the fractal geometry of the alien "message" that coverted people over and its real scientifici basis. He also discusses real efforts to work on adding a third strand of DNA to the double-helix in labs to modify food, etc. We also get a commentary track on the pilot by producer/director/writer David Goyer ("Blade")and Brannon Braga ("Star Trek: The Next Generation", "Enterprise"). The fact that the show was able to attract some top notch film directors/TV directors (Peter Hyams, Bill L. Norton, David S. Goyer among others) and writers is a pretty good sign of the high quality of the show.
An excellent series "Threshold" was the best of the science fiction shows that appeared in 2005 and one of the best (by its end) of the new crop of shows on the air. It's a pity it was cut short. The show is spread out over four discs and housed in individual slimline cases with two discs in each set.
I'd highly recommend this underrated show that was cancelled far too soon.

THRESHOLD is a suspenseful drama about a team of experts who are assembled when the U.S. Navy makes a chilling discovery: an extra terrestrial craft has landed in the mid-Atlantic ocean. Armed only with her hypothetical strategy to address the appearance of aliens on earth, Caffrey now finds herself thrust in the midst of a global crisis. Not to be confused with the 80s movie of the same name, "The Monster Squad" was a fond memory from my childhood. This 70s NBC Saturday morning show featured a pre "Love Boat" Fred Grandy as Walt, a night watchman at
a Hollywood-type wax museum who was also a criminology college student during the day. He built a "Crime Computer" to monitor police activity during his shift. The computer somehow brought to life the statues of the Frankenstein Monster, Dracula, and the Wolfman(not Laurence Talbot, but Bruce WW. The initials stood for WereWolf). To make up for past misdeeds, the three use their unique abilities to fight crime. The show featured "special guest villians" like Marty Allen, Alice Ghostly, Jonathan Harris, amoung others. If the show reminded you of the 60s "Batman" tv show, that's because both shows were produced by the same people. I can't wait for this DVD, and I still think an updated version of this show would work today.

Rain Shadow: Series One (2007) Review

Rain Shadow: Series One (2007)
Average Reviews:

Six episodes are not enough. It's that good. The views of the rain shadow country alone make the viewer desire to experience the ruggedness, even overcome the hardships. This Australian drama was filmed in southern Australia, rain shadow country. A rain shadow is an arid region on the lee side of mountains allowing little rain to cross, like Nevada. It creates a setting as tough, as desperate, and as determined as the veterinarian Kate McDonald living in fictional Paringa.
Dr. Kate (widowed 10 years) is played by Rachel Ward. Ward turns from her more recent directing and writing activities to lead the cast with her superb acting portrayal of a woman who has taken charge of her life caught up in extreme harshness located an arid region and a struggling community. Driving into Paringa, is the newest arrival in a long string of attempts to secure an assistant, in the person of Dr. Jill Blake (Victoria Thaine). Her own extraordinary performance adds to the off-again, on-again, personal and professional relationship between the two vets that have a community animal health situation to deal with as well as their own secret lives. It's a powerful combination as intriguing as the interacting lives of the rest of Paringa's citizens.
Move aside, James Herriot, make room, as Rain Shadow has rekindled interest in a country veterinarian's life. Dr. Jill is new, not nearly as tough as Dr. Kate McDonald--YET! And the viewer is as confused about the history and personality exchanges of Paringa as Jill. The community seems to have it's own definitions for integrity and law. For example Larry Riley's (Gary Sweet) unexplained wealth in a struggling location. And, why were so many other newly arriving vet assistants driven off so fast?
This is a contemporary wild country, gritty, survival-of-the-fittest story; not altogether unlike some old tales of the US Wild West. Rain Shadow is gripping drama that, although it ends satisfactorily, it leaves itself open for a reunion and an additional series. Hopefully writers Tony Morphett and Jimmy Thomson will comply. I for one would like to spend another six hours with the lady vets' adventures.
Viewing ladies will like the assertiveness (to the point of big, bad, boldness) of the pair of female Paringa vets. Men will wonder if they would have the fortitude to stick it out, like the courageous young and old men of the Rain Shadow. At what lengths would you go? At what point of endurance would you fold it in? IN REALITY, how much longer can you wait to see this stunning story of those determined to live through the drought, persevere, and conquer the outback?
Each of the 6 episodes of Rain Shadow is equal to a 5-star movie.

Two women fight for the future of their outback community After a decade of drought, a devastating sheep disease strikes the small Australian farming town of Paringa. Tough-minded veterinarian Kate McDonald (Golden Globe®-nominee Rachel Ward, The Thorn Birds) struggles to save her community with the help of a feisty new assistant (Victoria Thaine, The Caterpillar Wish) -- who is just as determined to unlock the mysteries of Kate’s past. Filmed entirely on location in a natural rain shadow region in the Adelaide Hills, this poignant drama features stunningly stark vistas and exceptional performances. Hostility and hope, determination and despair mix in a combustible series that pits two strong women against the odds and, oftentimes, against each other. I greatly enjoyed this rendition of Sir Walter Scott's famous novel. Although there are significant plot deviations, the series is well acted with fantastic costumes and sets true to the period. The theatrical talent of every single actor in this series was simply outstanding and their great performances made the characters multi-dimensional in scope expressing all the nuances of human nature.
Steven Waddington plays a very strong role as Ivanhoe: champion of the absent Richard The Lion Hearted and fiancee of Rowena (Victoria Smurfit), his dear once betrothed who's now promised by his father to Lord Athelstane. Ciar'n Hinds ('Excalibur', HBO's 'Rome') gives probably the best performance as Sir Brian De Bois-Guilbert, the evil Templar knight whose hatred for Ivanhoe is as great as his passion for Rebecca (Susan Lynch), the Jewish healer. Lynch as Rebecca herself delivers one of the best performances as a woman whose forbidden passion for Ivanhoe saves the kingdom from the Templars and Prince John. There's even a brief appearance by Sian Philips (I, Claudius) as Elenore D'Aquitaine, the queen mother who comes to arbitrate between her feuding sons John and Richard. Another outstanding performance was by Christopher Lee (Scaramanga in Bond's 'Man with the Golden Gun) who makes his first performance for the BBC in over 50 years. His role as the sadistic and zealous Grand Templar is convincing enough to give anyone the creeps.
The costumes and armor properly depict the armaments and fashion of the 12th century. The series is filmed on location in Wales showing a few of the many medieval churches, abbeys, manors, and castles that dot its landscape thereby adding to the film's feeling of authenticity. The film is perhaps graphic in violence but this captures the brutality of medieval warfare quite well. Alltogether a great mini-series that has more positive qualities than shortcomings. The story is fluid and the acting is excellent. Definitely worth owning.

Greg the Bunny returns in this two disc collection of his parody series on IFC> If you are a fan of the FOX series or just Greg in general, then you will want this collection. It has many many funny moments, but it definitely ISN'T for the young. It is nothing like the FOX series when it comes to content. Not only does it have drug use and nudity, it has a heaping helping of cusing. Overall, if you are a fan of the FOX series, this is a have to have only if you aren't offended by adult material. My favorite sketch is the Pulp Fiction parody. They are great!

Supernanny - Season 1 (2005) Review

Supernanny - Season 1 (2005)

I have a toddler who just hit "terrible twos". I've heard a lot of good things about the "Supernanny" show but never watched it, so I decided to buy a DVD. I'm glad I did!
The Supernanny provides very clear instructions on her parenting techniques. First we see her doing the technique, then the parents. Then it goes in detail in what the parents did wrong when implementing the technique, and shows again how to do it correctly. This repetition really helps to finally "get it".
I read lots of parenting books, but watching this DVD beats mosts of these books hands down! What you read in books can be interpreted in many different ways... most of which are wrong ways. Watching the DVD allows you to SEE exactly what to do, and HOW to do it.
