I was at the Cape Cod Melody Tent August 14th 2008 show where the DVD was taped. The DVD does a great job capturing the atmosphere. The Melody Tent in Hyannis, MA is a great place to see a Saw Doctors concert, the energy from the crowd and the band is incredible. Not sure who enjoys the show more, the audience or the band! The live CD recording is also very good

The new Saw Doctors DVD is entitled Clare Island to Cape Cod and features a sixty five minute documentary film on The Saw Doctors by Steven Lock. The documentary includes some amazing live footage of The Saw Doctors concert at The Cape Cod Melody Tent in Hyannis, MA, last August. Steve Lock employed nine cameras including two Jib Cameras to capture the full on atmosphere and response of the Bands fans in the 2,000 capacity marquee - The Saw Doctors played on a rotating stage in the middle of the Tent with the audience banked up on all sides around the Band. The stage rotated 360 degrees every ten minutes and the concert footage captures the intimacy and excitement of Davy, Leo and the rest of The Saw Doctors playing to different sections of the crowd over the course of two hours of the show. Also included in the documentary film are exclusive interviews with Davy Carton, Leo Moran and the rest of The Saw Doctors who look back over the Bands 20 year history - back in 1988, Mike Scott of The Waterboys discovered The Saw Doctors playing in the back bar of The Quays Pub in Galway. The documentary also includes video footage of The Saw Doctors playing their Number One hit, About You Now, and hilariously evedrops on the Bands party in Galway to celebrate their first Number One in seventeen years. Leo Moran writes:The Melody Tent in Hyannis in Cape Cod has been a celebratory venue for The Saw Doctors for a few years now. Every August we park the bus out the back, enjoy the sunshine and the hospitality and play in the spectacularly theatrical enclosure that is The Melody Tent, completely surrounded by banks of exceptionally enthusiastic and charged-up fans and friends. Often we ve said we should film the show for its unique atmosphere and intensity, and every time we forgot until the bus was parking up again, another twelve months and a hundred gigs past. The Music Tracklisting for the new DVD is as follows:Clare Island to Cape Cod - The Saw Doctors in ConcertRepriseHay WrapWill It Ever Stop Raining?Galway and Mayo including Maroon and WhiteAbout You NowOut For A SmokeClare IslandThe Winter is LongTo Win Just OnceGreen and Red of MayoJoyce Country Céilí BandTommy KN17Reprise

Seventh Stream (2001) Review

Seventh Stream (2001)

An ill-fated love story set against the backdrop of a rustic Irish fishing village. Owen Quinn (Scott Glenn), widower and fisherman has been living a solitary life since his wifes' death five years ago. That all changes when an enchanting and mysterious woman with no name (Saffron Burrows) arrives in the village. She reaches out to him for help and he responds by taking her into his home. She takes the name Mairead and before long her kind and gentle ways heal his loneliness and pain.
However their love is not to be, for she is not what she appears to be. She is a seltie, one of the mythical seal people mentioned in Irish legend and lore. Her human form is only temporary, soon she must return to the sea or perish on the shore.
This may be a Hallmark Hall of Fame feature made for television, but you wouldn't know it from the production values. This is a wonderfully done film, one of those old-fashioned romantic tearjerkers that will stay with you for a long time. It also contains some of the most breathtaking scenic shots of the Irish coastline you'll ever see.
Scott Glenn delivers a strong performance as always, while Saffron Burrows plays the part of the mythical woman/seal to absolute perfection. This is a film that can be watched over and over again without ever losing its emotional impact.

Gaelic Storm - Live in Chicago (2005) Review

Gaelic Storm - Live in Chicago (2005)

Since I "discovered" Gaelic Storm a bit over three years ago, I have made it a "must" to be in the crowd anytime this exciting and talented crew is anywhere in my area (West-Central Ohio). So I have been privileged to hear GS live 15 - 20 times.
Let me promise that the performance captured in Chicago on this DVD is the REAL THING. It captures the spirit, and the lively, and lovely, enthusiasm and driving Irish music that Gaelic Storm presents every time out! Watching that DVD in my living room (I wasn't in Chicago when it was recorded) frequently has me on my feet clapping (and yeah, sometimes even jumping up and down)with their amazing music. Gaelic Storm is the ONLY band that has the power to make me jump up and down since I was 17 - - - and I am now 72. The magic of their music ALWAYS draws me to the front of the stage with the teens (and some others)who comprise a most enthusiastic, yet gentle, mosh pit. I just cannot keep from jumping with the kids on such GS bell-ringers as "Courting in the Kitchen" or "The Hills of Connamara", or "Tell Me Ma", or "Beggarman" and so many others.
Yep, this DVD presents a true picture of the electric atmosphere that is generated by a Gaelic Storm concert. I wouldn't part with my copy for $100.

My Boy Jack (2007) Review

My Boy Jack (2007)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
2007's "My Boy Jack" is an extraordinarily good drama for television, featuring an excellent cast and a compelling story about the First World War, based on a play and a screenplay by David Haig.
When Britain goes to war with Imperial Germany in 1914, young men sign up in droves for the military. John "Jack" Kipling, son of famous writer and British Empire advocate Rudyard Kipling, is anxious to serve in uniform but rejected due to poor eyesight. Overruling the concerns of his wife and daughter, Kipling Senior pulls some strings to get Jack a commission in the Irish Guards. Jack works hard to overcome the challenge of his eyesight, in the process becoming a competent lieutenant and earning the respect of his platoon. All too quickly, Jack ships out for the Western Front, where he goes missing in action in his first mission "over the top" from the trenches at Loos in 1915. The family will spend agonizing months trying to learn his whereabouts. A shell-shocked member of Jack's platoon will finally bring word of Jack's fate.
David Haig is uncanny as Rudyard Kipling, Jack's father, a superbly talented storyteller and novelist, now a government propagandist trying to make sense of hideous casualties. His efforts to enable his son to "do his part" will be a source of immense guilt when Jack goes missing. Kim Cattrell is astonishingly good as Carrie, Jack's American mother. Haunted by the loss of another child, Carrie advocates for a position of less danger for her son, whom she fears will be at additional risk due to his poor eyesight. When Jack goes missing, Carrie is relentless in tracking down clues to his possible fate. Carey Mulligan is very effective as Elsie "Bird" Kipling, Jack's sympathetic older sister, who shares with him the stifling burden of living in the shadow of a very prominent father. Daniel Radcliff is absolutely credible as Jack, whether braving the challenge of military training or sneaking cigarettes with his sister.
At the core of the drama is the haunting question of whether Jack should have gone into service in the first place. The family argues over Kipling Senior's efforts to get Jack preferential treatment, but the story makes clear that Jack is very much a volunteer. Moreover, it is apparent that Jack, out from under his father's shadow, is transformed by his few months in uniform from boy to man, performing with exemplary bravery and with compassion for his soldiers.
Production values are exceptionally good for a television movie. At least some filming was done at Kipling's home of Bateman in Southern England. Period costumes and manners are spot-on. The recreation of the Western Front is appropriately wet, muddy, and terrifying. The closing scene, in which Rudyard Kipling comforts King George V for the unexpected loss of his own child by reciting a moving poem, is a perfect ending for the movie.
This movie is very highly recommended as compelling period family drama.

Its 1915 and World War I has been declared. Aged only 17, Kiplings son, like most of his generation, is swept up in the enthusiasm to fight the Germans, a mood stoked vigorously by his father. Jack is cripplingly short sighted and the army has rejected him twice, rendering him too myopic even for an army suffering thousands of casualties a week and desperate for recruits. Yet Rudyard is undeterred, determined that his son should go to the front, like countless other sons, and fight for the values that he, Kipling, espouses so publicly. Using his fame and influence, Kipling persuades Lord Roberts, on his death bed, to get Jack a commission in the Irish guards. This intervention is barely tolerated by Carrie and daughter Elise (Carey Mulligan), as they disagree that Jack is fit to fight and fear for his safety on the front line. Jack is instantly popular with his troop he is a great leader and trains tirelessly to overcome the disability that is his eyesight. Six months later Jack sails to France as a lieutenant. Jack went missing in action during the Battle of Loos and his mother and father carried out an increasingly desperate search for him, spanning many years and many miles.DVD Features:Deleted ScenesInterviews

The Best of So Graham Norton (2001) Review

The Best of So Graham Norton (2001)

Right up front it must be confessed this is humor from the high school boy's bathroom. But what's wrong with that? If that's not your speed, pass. But if you can tolerate a reminder of that brand of humor that stroked your funny bone when you were a teenager, then this is the ticket. Norton is a fast-witted, outrageous, flamboyant, extroverted class clown, and about the best at this particular game (low-brow sexual humor). The star-studded guests, including Elton John, Cher, Dolly Parton, Dustin Hoffman, Ozzy Osbourne, etc. the list goes on and on, are fun to watch in their unguarded moments when they use dirty words and talk about things that just aren't talked about on other talk shows. Nothing sophisticated here, but still worth your time. Will cleanse you of a dozen different sexual hang-ups.
