The Statler Brothers: Farewell Concert (2005) Review

The Statler Brothers: Farewell Concert (2005)

My first complete introduction to the Statlers was their Nashville TV Show that ran for 7 years. It was a great variety hour that showcased many new and veteran entertainers and unique acts with jugglers, magician's, etc. But the famous singing group got started with a Johnny Cash tour.
The concert was filmed live in West Virginia, October 2002. Unfortunately, it is not in stereo, but monotone. Picture and sound are crisp and clear.
Anymore, a Farewell Concert doesn't imply complete retirement. The Statlers will continue to make music and some will be writing books, as a memoir is due in 2006. They have just simply retired from touring.

What I like about the Statlers performing live is that they always keep the songs true to the original recordings. Each man lends a different voice that harmonizes so well. And as corny as Harold can get, he is always funny to me. His humor is interjected. The men pay tribute to the All American Band, their families, the office staff, road crew etc. They didn't leave anyone out.

They included wonderful hits from their gospel side with "How Great Thou Art, "This Old House" "Thank You World" and "Amazing Grace".
The Statlers have either written or chosen, very good music with meaningful lyrics. Each time your listen to these storytelling songs, you hear something more, something refreshing and the lyrics are vivid and memorable, such as the endearing classic "Do You Remember These"; "Class Of '57"; "Randolph Scott"; and "Susan When She Tried"; "Elizabeth" and "More Than a Name on a Wall."
I have loved their version of "Memories Are Made of This"; "Moments to Remember" and "The Great Pretender." They sang their first hit, "Flowers on the Wall"; and a beautiful song, "Too Much On My Heart", plus "Bed of Roses".
Also included are "Do You Know You Are My Sunshine"; "Oh Baby Mine"; "I'll Go To My Grave Loving You", and "A Place On Calvary."
This is a keeper DVD for a night of great music.....Rizzo

Johnny Cash Christmas 1977 (2007) Review

Johnny Cash Christmas 1977 (2007)

By the mid-1970s, Johnny Cash was a veteran TV performer, and new how to keep a show humming. This disc follows an earlier show from 1976 that featured Johnny and June Carter Cash hosting a folksy, round-robin "guitar pull" in their spacious Tennessee ranch house.
The following year, Cash had a much glitzier, punchier production, trading his funky ranch home vibe for a big, shiny soundstage, decked out with a gigantic golden holly wreath and twenty-foot tall panels of frosted-glass snowflakes. This show, which broadcast on November 30, 1977, was also a tighter show, mainly featuring the seasoned cast of Cash's long-running road show: June Carter Cash, the reconstituted Carter Family, Carl Perkins and the ever-jovial Statler Brothers, and another appearance by Roy Clark, who helped anchor the previous year's Christmas show. Although there's plenty of holiday music and seasonal cheer, there's also a wealth of secular music -- Johnny and June sing a duet of "Darling Companion," and the second half of the show is devoted to a tribute to Elvis Presley, who had passed away a few months earlier. Along with Carl Perkins, Cash hosts other buddies from his Sun Records rockabilly years -- Roy Orbison is in fine form on "Pretty Woman," while Jerry Lee Lewis tears it up on a modernized "Whole Lotta Shakin' Going On," then slows things down for a sentimental reading of "White Christmas." Surprisingly, the Carter Family is kept mostly in the background -- Mother Maybelle wasn't in the show at all -- while Anita and the sisters only sang as part of a larger chorus. All in all, this is a lively, well-paced TV show, with a very sincere religious emotional core, sure to be a delight for Cash fans and country Christmas enthusiasts everywhere. Recommended! Johnny Cash was a unique figure in the turbulent 1970s, outspoken enough to be embraced by the counterculture, and yet conventional enough to be safe for middle America. It was in this latter mode that Cash devised one of his most successful forays into television ever: The Johnny Cash Christmas Special. Now for the first time since the original airing on CBS is the Johnny Cash Christmas Special 1977 Program Listing 77: Christmas Time's A Comin' - Johnny Cash Darlin' Companion - Johnny Cash & June Carter Cash This Ole House - Johnny Cash & The Statler Brothers Blue Christmas - Johnny Cash & The Statler Brothers Here Comes Santa Claus - Johnny Cash & Roy Clark Frosty The Snow Man - Johnny Cash & Roy Clark Rudolph, The Red-Nosed Reindeer - Johnny Cash, Family & Friends Big River - Johnny Cash Blue Suede Shoes - Carl Perkins Oh, Pretty Woman - Roy Orbison Whole Lot Of Shakin' Going On - Jerry Lee Lewis White Christmas - Jerry Lee Lewis This Train Is Bound For Glory - Johnny Cash,Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison & Carl Perkins Silent Night - Johnny Cash, Family & Friends O Little Town Of Bethlehem - June Carter Cash Hark! The Statler Brothers: Best of the Statler Brothers (2007) Review

The Statler Brothers: Best of the Statler Brothers (2007)

First some history to those who never heard of "The Statler Brothers". The Statler Brothers got their start working with Johnny Cash (the man in black). Only two of the group are actually brothers (Don and Harold). Yet the original group (Lew DeWitt & Phil Basley) were close friends from same small town of Staunton, Virginia. Lew actually wrote their first big hit "Flowers On The Wall". Due to an illness, Lew DeWitt had to leave the group and Jimmy Fortune was hired on.
I missed watching their TV shows and the concerts. Great family entertainment! Yet, I can understand them wanting to stop and enjoy retirement life. You don't have to now! Just watching these reruns until a new one comes out on the market.
Harold is funny! He could have made it back in the days of Red Skelton, Jack Benny, etc. were on TV. Yet, he is at his best like George & Gracie Burns when preforming with his brother Don.
I can't watch very many of the new TV shows and/or movies now. Too much violence and dirty language. This is something that you can sit down and not have to worry about what your little ones hear and/or see.
