Yoga Zone: Strengthen and Tone (2003) Review

Yoga Zone: Strengthen and Tone (2003)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There are lots of them to pick from and I have a small handful myself, but Strengthen and Tone is my favorite. Jen Monness leads both 20 minute sessions, one for upper body, the other for lower body. Jean Kerner assists in both sessions and demonstrates the postures for the more experienced yoga practitioner. The setting is at the Grand Lidos San Souci resort in Jamaica, wher many of the Yoga Zone videos are filmed.
In the first session you will strengthen the lower body in a variety of poses. You start out in downward facing dog and hold this pose for a bit, this pose strengthens the back of your legs as well as stretches them. Next you move into lunge position on one leg, then you test your balance by lifting one arm then the other, then you switch legs and do the other side. Then you move into downward facing dog again, this time you should notice a little difference that you can go a bit deeper into the pose. Next you move on to warrior 2, then right angle pose. Jean demonstrates a more advanced modification for right angle by reaching her hand to the floor, then you repeat this on the other side. After this you move into one last downward facing dog, stretching out the legs even more. Then you move into rag doll which is a forward bend with your elbows folded. After that you will move into chair pose incorporated with forward bends, Jen will have you repeat this sequence 3 more times, along with a "Sun Breath". Next are some poses where you balance on one leg. You stand on one leg while lifting the knee of the opposite leg, then for more advanced you can extend your leg out straight. From this you will move into warrior 3 which is another balancing pose. You will balance on one leg while lifting the other leg behind you and bending over, like you are in a "T" shape. This is then repeated on the other leg. Then it's time to stretch a bit, Jen shows you lizard pose which is a lunge pose with both hands inside the front leg, you have the option of bending the elbows for a more intense stretch. Then you move into a hamstring stretch, straightening your front leg and shifting to the back leg. Next is cat pose combined with more downward facing dogs in a moving vinyasa, you repeat this for about 30 seconds. Finally you will lie on your back and stretch some more before the final pose where you sit in a cross legged seat.
The upper body session is a little more challenging, you start out with seated spinal twists then you will stretch the triceps. You will start with reverse plank pose, then move into active cat which is cat pose incorporated with little pushups. Then you move into plank pose, here options are given to either do these on the toes or the knees, then you will move into Chataranga lowering yourself to the floor, then upward facing dog holding this pose for a bit before going into downward facing dog, again held for a few breaths. After this series you will move into childs pose, then you will do a sun salutation starting in mountain pose with hands in prayer position, then you lift your arms side and up before moving into a forward bend, then you will move into Chataranga again, then upward facing dog and finishing out with downward facing dog before coming back up to mountain pose. This is repeated one more time. Following this you will see fan posture on each side, then you move to the floor and into headstand prep which I really liked. Headstand prep sort of resembles downward facing dog but it's done on your elbows and your legs in a piked position. From here you will move into dolphin pose which is a plank done on your elbows, which I found challenging. After that you will move into sphinx pose which looks like a cobra before moving into extended seal. You finish out the upper body session with side lean pose done on each side, a nice way to end the program.
In each session there are brief commercial breaks, where Alan Finger, founder of Yoga Zone appears and offers tips and information. These breaks are short maybe lasting 20 seconds each, some might be bothered by this, but I didn't find it distracting at all.
Jen Monness does a nice job in this video, she is pleasant and does a decent job with breath cueing, she is my favorite Yoga Zone instructor. This video is best for beginner and intermediate levels, I found it to be interesting and not boring, plus it was nice to see some poses I have never seen before, such as warrior 3 and headstand prep. I have only been practicing yoga for a short time so I am still learning and improving, but I would recommend this as one of the better Yoga Zone videos I have tried.

Skinny Bitch Fitness: Body (2008) Review

Skinny Bitch Fitness: Body (2008)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this out of curiosity. I had not heard of the instructors prior to seeing the DVD's come out last week.
There are a couple reasons I say it's not for everyone.
1. If you find the title offensive there is more of the same language used throughout the video. You definately wouldn't want children around when watching this.
2. There is very little focus on queueing and form. They frequently change the step without any warning and if they do mention the change they are 2 to 3 steps into the sequence before they do. They like to talk a lot about how much it's hurting or how sweaty they are and occasionally promote eating healthy.
There are some positives which is why I gave it a 4, although I'm sure many will disagree with this rating.
1. From what I gathered neither Rory nor Kim are professional instructors, and if that is true then they did an excellent job for their first time at this. I've studied to teach group classes and it is a lot harder than it looks. I give them kudos for even taking this on.
2. All the workouts are done entirely with your own body weight. No weights or bands required. This is rare these days, but might be appreciated by someone just getting into working out in their home.
3. There were a lot of new moves I've never seen and I've been taking classes and working out to DVD's for years. The workout is choreographed by Patrick Goudeau who is a pro. Even though the queueing is almost non-existant, the choreography is such that you're always able to see the screen and the moves are simple to pick up.
4. I have bad knees and typically any kind of all body or leg workouts include a lot of lunges and squats that kill my knees. There are some lunges and squats in the workout, but they are performed in such a way that I didn't feel any stress on my knees.
5. Overall the production is not bad. The music got to be a bit annoying to me a couple times. For each section they repeat the same beats over and over. Thankfully it is very faint. Lighting and camera work are good. I was always able to see what I was suppose to be doing.
A bit of an overview of each section (by the way, the package says they are 20 minutes each, but it's more like 15):
Abs - very pilates like. There's a tiny standing warmup then it's all mat. If you can imagine doing pilates without any instruction on correct form, and doing the moves faster that's a good description of the abs section.
Arms - Your arms will get tired. Think of arms circles for 15 minutes. There are a lot of variations and some weird boxing like moves that take a bit to catch on to. There's also some foot movements that don't really sync up well with the arm moves, but they're doable.
Legs - Think Jane Fonda and Pilates combined but again, no focus on form and moving pretty quickly. These exercises seem more for your glutes than legs.
Glutes - (they use "A**" in the DVD) Mainly standing moves; this is where some of the lunges and sqats come into play, but the movements are very fast, like plyometrics. While not difficult, I found this workout least memorable.
To summarize I would recommend this for someone who has no objection to profanity, is in reasonably good shape (gets exercise walking or in their day to day activities and has no health problems) and wants to start exercising in their home. The reason I say no health problems is that there is very little mention of the proper form. If you're just looking for something to get you moving, want to feel like you're working out casually with a group of girlfriends and are generally laid back you'll like this DVD.
I would not recommend this if you're a serious exerciser looking for a challenging workout... even though they were complaining of sweating, I didn't break a sweat and didn't find this to be a particularly challenging workout. There are also sections where they don't seem to be working out to the beat of the music which will annoy an experienced exerciser.

This is an excellent workout video. As someone over 70, I find that I can do all the exercises at one of the three levels. It would also be very useful to anyone with an office job. All major muscle groups are worked as well as emphasis on improving balance, posture and relaxing tension. Highly recommended.

The Biggest Loser Workout, Vol. 1 (2004) Review

The Biggest Loser Workout, Vol. 1 (2004)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This DVD has 5 different programs. You get 2 cardio segments 20 minutes a piece, a weights segment also 20 minutes, a bootcamp segment also 20 minutes, and a stretch segment which is only 10 minutes. The workouts are actually pretty challenging. The quality of the workouts are good, but there are a couple of reasons why I give this 4 stars instead of 5. This is very high impact. If you have joint problems this is not the DVD for you. There is ALOT of jumping. Also, this must have been recorded before the finale because the cast of former contestants were visibly unable to keep up on some of the exercises. Also, sometimes they would be going at a different pace, or be on a different foot, than Bob the trainer. These things can be pretty distracting. The versatility of this DVD is a big selling point. You can choose just one segment, or you can mix & match. Its really very user friendly. So, for the intensity of the workouts & the versatility of this DVD I give it 4 stars.

Body in Numbers (2008) Review

Body in Numbers (2008)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Body in Numbers" is a really interesting, informative, and innovative dvd. It strives to inform its viewers about the workings of the human body, by utilizing number amounts of everyday objects as comparisons. It relates specific information on many various parts and stages of our bodies...but at the same time, it manages to capture/maintain your interest while doing so. Because of this, it appeals to both young adults and older adults...it is actually enjoyable! In many ways, it seems somewhat similar to the "Eyewitness" science videos...except that this dvd is obviously targeted at more mature audiences. In fact, I plan on showing portions of it to my Living Environment high school classes...it's great to find a dvd that will enable students to enjoy, while also learning. I highly recommend it to anyone who has an interest in learning about how and why our bodies function the way they do. You'll be astonished, and amazed by what you learn!

More advanced than a computer yet more versatile and resilient than any machine is the amazing miracle known as the human body. From the thousands of breaths we take each day to the millions of receptors our eyes use to see, our bodies are an intricate and astonishing collection of working parts. In these four fascinating programs, we analyze the human body, from conception through old age, and decode the body's vital statistics in a surprising way that will completely change the way you think about yourself. The Miracle of Life We bring the miracle of conception to life in a brand-new way, illuminating the process with sheer numbers. For example, did you know that sperm must swim the equivalent of the width of Lake Superior to reach the female egg? Childhood This episode follows the evolving journey of our lives - from one-year-old to the age of 10. We look at how our muscles and bones develop, examine how we are able to learn so much so quickly, and analyze the incredible power of our senses. Becoming Men and Women This episode explores the numbers in the lives of our bodies from the age of 10 to middle-age. We see how a boy's testosterone levels soar 50 times over to transform him into a man and follow a girl's remarkable journey through puberty. Our Life in Numbers In this final episode, we look at the whole sweep of our body's journey through life, how it keeps going and what it's capable of producing during the course of a lifetime. For one person alone, the numbers climb into the trillions.
