Caribbean Workout: Aerobics (2005) Review

Caribbean Workout: Aerobics (2005)

I picked this DVD up at a local Ross store for $6.99. It came with the Kickboxing DVD. For the price, it was a great buy. Each DVD has four 20 minute workouts. The Aerobics DVD has two low impact and two high impact workouts. They include athletic (rather than dancy) moves that are easy to learn. There is some repetition and overlap (the workouts have some similar moves) but it doesn't get tiresome. The moves can be easily modified to make them higher or lower impact.
The music is club-ish, I've heard it in Karen Voight and CIA workouts. The scenery is gorgeous, and Shelly has a natural, easy manner, as do her background exercisers. This DVD would be good for someone looking for short workouts, and would be considered intermediate, though I think you could make it easier or harder if you wanted. There are cuts where the commercials would be, but when they "return," the exercisers are still doing the same moves so the cuts aren't too bad.
My only complaint is that this DVD isn't chaptered, so if you decide to do two of the workouts, you end up doing two warm-ups and cool downs. You can fast-forward through them though.

Denise Austin: Mat Workout Based on the Work of J.H. Pilates (2000) Review

Denise Austin: Mat Workout Based on the Work of J.H. Pilates (2000)

First, I want to tell every advanced exerciser who is terrified of buying a Denise Austin video -- FEAR NOT. She is not cloying in this video. I have seen Denise on TV and cannot handle how she talks down to her audience (in her kind, well-meaning way) and refers to abs of "tummies" and to cardio as "burning butter." But I could handle Denise here. In fact, this is a reasonably challenging workout and Denise Austin is somewhat sedate in her presentation. What's better, she has created a great workout for those brand-new to the Pilates scene.
But let me get to the real point: I don't care if you call it pilates or yoga or Denise Austin's matwork. This video just plain works. If nothing else, everyone should buy this video to prevent back problems. This video's focus on the abs and back (stretching/core stablization) has helped me eradicate some lower back tension that has been nagging me for years. The workout is gentle yet very effective.
My only other exposure to Pilates has been through the well-known introductory pilates video, The Method: Precision Toning. I find that Denise Austin's Pilates workout is more interesting and even more challenging for me than the Method's. Sorry if this offends classic Pilates crowd. That's just my experience. What's more, Denise's video is broken down into two 20-minute segments. That works for me! I'm more likely to do a 20-minute pilates/yoga workout than a 45-minute one.
So a bouquet of roses goes to Ms. Austin. She's created an interesting, informative and effective routine of yoga and pilates and made it accessible to busy people new to pilates. I hope she continues to produce more videos along this line.

Denise Austin: Get Fit Daily Dozen (2008) Review

Denise Austin: Get Fit Daily Dozen (2008)

This DVD is just perfect for me, a mom of three little ones. There are six 12 minute "daily dozens," such as Yoga Stretch and Cardio Kickboxing Burn. There are 12 moves in each daily dozen segment lasting a minute each. I always followed Denise Austin on her Lifetime TV half hour program, but when it was cancelled was at a loss for a short program I could do daily. Now, I pop this DVD in an am able to select one twelve minute workout, or several, lasting longer if I have the time. I would say the workouts are easier than some of her other workout videos, pretty much because once you get tired of one move, she is already onto the next. I would describe myself as a beginner to moderate "work-outer." Denise Austin, as always, is just an absolute sweet and encouraging person: I don't like to work out without her cheering me on! I have so many of her workouts already, and she has been doing this for years and years for a reason!

This is an excellent workout video. As someone over 70, I find that I can do all the exercises at one of the three levels. It would also be very useful to anyone with an office job. All major muscle groups are worked as well as emphasis on improving balance, posture and relaxing tension. Highly recommended.

The Biggest Loser Workout, Vol. 1 (2004) Review

The Biggest Loser Workout, Vol. 1 (2004)

This DVD has 5 different programs. You get 2 cardio segments 20 minutes a piece, a weights segment also 20 minutes, a bootcamp segment also 20 minutes, and a stretch segment which is only 10 minutes. The workouts are actually pretty challenging. The quality of the workouts are good, but there are a couple of reasons why I give this 4 stars instead of 5. This is very high impact. If you have joint problems this is not the DVD for you. There is ALOT of jumping. Also, this must have been recorded before the finale because the cast of former contestants were visibly unable to keep up on some of the exercises. Also, sometimes they would be going at a different pace, or be on a different foot, than Bob the trainer. These things can be pretty distracting. The versatility of this DVD is a big selling point. You can choose just one segment, or you can mix & match. Its really very user friendly. So, for the intensity of the workouts & the versatility of this DVD I give it 4 stars.
