I found the "Best of Filipino Food Vol. 1" was an excellent introduction to cooking Filipino Food. It reminded me of my favorite Filipino dishes that my Mother, Father, aunts and uncles cooked during my childhood.
Unfortunately, the DVD did not include a recipe booklet. So I had to pause the video to write down the ingredients list then write down the cooking instructions as I watched the video, but the resulting dishes always turned out great.
I'm really hoping there is a "Best of Filipino Food Vol. 2" coming out soon!

Me and my husband absolutely love this program. My husband especially likes the Phillipines because the people are friendly and they have good food. I like the one in Morocco, because I laugh over and over during the scene when he eats putrid meat, and hits his head with his hands. We enjoy it repeadedly.

Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations - Collection Four (2009) Review

Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations - Collection Four (2009)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Season Four of No Reservations is where I think the show really started to pick up steam on the entertainment side of the house. Whereas the show used to revolve simply around Tony going to various locations and eating food, this is where the Travel Channel really started figuring out that Anthony Bourdain is probably their biggest star asset.
If you're a food show purist, you will probably be a little annoyed with the increased frequency of the "Tony, go hurt yourself," skits in the various locations. Season Four includes the zip lining and cave diving bits as well as the Greek shipwreck party and the night out at Kilauea. The entire episode focusing on Anthony going back into the kitchen at Les Halles will probably irk you too as there is little to no actual food tasting being done.
If you're a Bourdain fan, this will most likely be one of your favorite seasons; probably because of the Les Halles episode (and lets be honest, Eric Ripert makes everything better). This season is a very introspective one and it seems like Tony's really taking the time to figure himself out during the course of the season. You see a lot less of the old "A Cook's Tour" and "No Reservations: seasons 1 and 2" Bourdain - the smoking, drinking, swearing version of Tony. Yes, he still swears a lot, but as he made his transition into fatherhood, the mantle of responsibility was almost palatable (no pun intended). This led to some great personal moments in the Uruguay episode with his brother Chris, trying to reconnect with their family's history. Serious items aside, there's the great Southwest road trip episode with Alice Cooper and the always entertaining Ted Nugent.
If you're a foodie, there is so much to drool over in this season. There is a cavalcade of culinary giants showing up in these episodes: the before mentioned Eric Ripert, Masaharu Morimoto (Your Iron Chef!), Marco Pierre White, and he finally buries the hatchet with Emeril Lagasse. The entire episode on Spain is nothing but pure, unadulterated food porn. As always, Tony's love of Japan really shows through every time he visits the country, and this time is no different.
One of the things that makes No Reservations such a great show to watch is the fact that you're not just sitting there watching Tony eat multi-hundred dollar meals, but instead he's getting down at street level, attempting to eat what the locals eat. If you're lucky enough to have Tony visit an area or country where you grew up in an episode, you come away thinking that he has somehow managed to truly capture a little bit of your hometown. Now imagine that he's doing that for each and every location that he visits and you get an inkling of why this show is so great.

Anthony Bourdain, the intrepid TV host, culinary adventurer and self-proclaimed hedonist, uncovers a fascinating side of countries that many tourists never see. By sharing meals with local families, participating in their celebrations and indulging in their sometimes unusual pastimes, Tony experiences different lifestyles and locales at their most vibrantly authentic. If you want to get a taste of the beauty, magic and quirky delights found off the overly traveled tourist path, take a trip with Anthony Bourdain!
Vancouver, British Columbia: Home to a thriving film industry, gorgeous scenery and an evolving food scene. For a change of pace, Tony tries ziplining, and he lands a small film role.
New Orleans: After the impact of Hurricane Katrina, Tony sets out to prove that New Orleans is still a vibrant and spectacular town. He meets up with restaurateur Emeril Lagasse and takes in a down-home New Orleans cookout.
London / Edinburgh: Tony goes on a renegade deer hunting trip with famed chef Marco Pierre White and then heads to St. John, considered one of the best restaurants in the world. In Scotland, Tony meets up with one of his literary heroes, best-selling crime author Ian Rankin.
Greek Islands: Tony experiences an - ofto, a huge festive picnic during which men slaughter a lamb and roast its meat over an open flame. Then he arrives at Shipwreck Beach to join a local family in their festivities.
Jamaica: Tony explores areas of Jamaica not so well-known to tourists - the bustling marketplace known as Coronation Market and the caves so plentiful on the island. He also gets a lesson in coffee growing and shares a traditional Jamaican Sunday dinner.
Hawaii: Tony gets a taste of paradise, sampling such local favorites as the Puka Dog and a variety of SPAM dishes, ranging from sushi to chili. He also takes off on a jet ski and pays a visit to Kilauea, the world's most active volcano, before participating in a fun-filled luau.
Into The Fire: After so many years away from the kitchen the big question is....can Anthony Bourdain still cook? He tests that theory himself when he sets out to work a double shift on ""the line"" at his old haunt, Restaurant Les Halles. Laos: Tony finds himself in Laos, a land with picturesque landscapes and mountains, exotic cuisines, and a mysterious history.
Tokyo: Famed Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto joins Tony in an examination of Japanese food ranging from the simplest of soba noodles to the sophistication of the traditional Kaiseki meal.
Uruguay: Tony and his brother, Chris, are on a mission to connect with their family in Uruguay after learning of Bourdain roots in this tiny South American country.
Colombia: Tony witnesses the amazing changes that have transformed this country. He pays a visit to the city of Medellin, once plagued with drugs and murder, but now home to families, laughter and great food.
Spain: Outside of Asia, Spain is the single greatest location for culinary achievement in the world, according to Anthony Bourdain. And Tony is out to explore and discover the culinary gems that make Spain great.
Egypt: Tony visits with locals to get a taste for what it means to be Egyptian. He spends an evening smoking shisha at a men's cafe, takes a boat ride down the Nile to spend the day with a local family and sleeps under the desert stars with a group of Bedouin men.
Saudi Arabia: After a nationwide casting call, No Reservations FAN-atic Danya Alhamrani was chosen to show off her hometown of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Tony explores the Saudi Arabia that most Westerners have never seen.
Washington D.C.: Tony samples fare from the popular Ben's Chili Bowl, hits up Peruvian chicken joint El Pollo Rico, and visits the D.C. Central Kitchen.
US Southwest: Tony meets with rocker Alice Cooper at a Phoenix hot dog stand that bears his name and tries out Texas-style fun with rock legend Ted Nugent.

I love this one! This is the one where she visits Jimmy Carter. Except on this dvd version they show "edited" pieces of the interview that that they couldn't show on t.v. Also, it's the one where she cooks the blueberry coffee cake on her pourch. One neat part of the "Extra spoonful of Paula" she shows you the house that she and Michael are building as it's being built as well as some other things. She also makes soup and sandwhiches. If you love Paula you'll love this one! But, The real retail price is $15.00, not this high amount.

Beware! Content of this DVD collection is great. However, beware! The production quality of the DVD collection is extremely poor. The programs blur or stop altogether. The commands do not operate. Sometimes you are able to play a program, other times they will not play. Very inconsistent and unreliable. I ordered this collection twice to be sure that I did not just receive a defective disc set. The same unreliability and play inconsistencies applied to the second collection, which Amazon sent to me free of charge to replace the first ordered collection.
I certainly hope the production quality improves with the next collection offered for sale.

Best Baking Recipes: America's Test Kitchen (2007)

This is not a must have DVD. It covers 9 recipes. Summer fruit tart, deep dish apple pie, classic white layer cake, chocolate mousse cake, corn muffins w/variations, creme brulee, classic brownies, spritz cookies, and molasses spice cookies.
We got this for the creme brulee recipe. and it looks great. We will try it soon and know it will come out fine because everything we have done from America's test kitchen does.
So it comes down to, are 9 recipes worth 11-18 dollars? Unless you need constant instruction every time you cook something, We don't think so.
Most of these recipes are available on their website or their subscription cooksillustrated website. not to mention their myriad volumes of cook books.
The equipment reviews seem to be pointless for a DVD. In 10 years none of the products will exist.
The printable recipes from your computer worked just fine from my OSX machine. which are all accessible through a HTML file that navigates well. Acrobat required to view/print recipes.
Bottom line. If they supplied more recipe content unique to the DVD and eliminated the pointless equipment reviews. this would have been a better product.
If you can get it from the other sellers for less than 5 bucks get it. But Its not worth 20

My mother taught cooking - first in our home, then in a shop/school/restaurant she opened back in the 1970s. It was not unusual for me to eat sweetbreads or calves brains or raw meat back then - which gave me my foundation for a love of indigenous foods. That may have a bearing on why I just adore Andrew Zimmern and his series Bizarre Foods. He has a love of culture and treats the people who host his tours of different countries with such honor and respect. At the same time he fun, witty and charming. I find every episode of this collection as well as the first one exciting to watch. I cannot say enough nice things about the show itself as I feel there is an importance to people understanding true local foods and cultures that have not been tampered with by refined foods that frankly -are not doing us any good at all. I would rate this series 10 stars if I could. Who knew watching a man eat fish eyes could be so much fun!

The shows are excellent. I found the quality of the production to be very good. The recipes are great, the episodes are fun to watch and they are often humorous. I personally would prefer more cooking and less equipment and product taste testing, but that is just a personal preference.
[Note: There are no recipes included on these DVD's - of any season - until Season 9. Season 9 does have recipes. Presumably they will be included in future editions, as well. Clearly they wanted to sell the recipes either in the companion book or online, so it is to their credit they have started including the recipes on the DVD's. Also, there seem to be parts of episodes missing from the DVD's that were part of the actual season. The web site has all the episodes listed with each and every recipe they did.]
I have copies of all seasons and I would recommend them in spite of these issues because they are very helpful, instructive, and fun to watch.
You can get all old seasons on their web site for 50% off and with quite reasonable shipping costs.

I would have given more stars, what is lacking is an INDEX of the contents and WRITTEN recipes. Often they forget to mention quantities on the video, hence the need for the written recipes. You would think they would have been included with the DVD set, without having to join www.americastestkitchen.com to obtain them. Also noticed that not all episodes/recipes shown on http://www.americastestkitchen.com/episodelist.asp?iseason=2 are not on the DVD's, see my index below of Disc 1.
But, I have learned a lot from the videos, just wish they would have included an index and recipes.

since we aren't blessed enough to get DVD releases of Gordon Ramsay over here in the States, at least we have local bad boy foody Tony Bourdain! i absolutely LOVE this guy! i could go on and on and gush like a giddy schoolgirl, but i won't ;)
what i will go on about is why they aren't releasing the COMPLETE SEASON!? i've contacted Image Entertainment, and no answer... so this really sucks! also, i wonder if we (in the U.S.) will get the uncensored EXTENDED Euro-versions? i'm already not going to buy this set because it's NOT complete, but if we don't get the extended versions, i'll be really annoyed, as i know for a fact there is extra footage shown in Europe that doesn't make it over here. i record the Travel Channel episodes to a set-top Digital Video Recorder (harddrive) and i have ALL seasons 1, 2 and now starting 3 burned to DVDR, so unless they are releasing EXTENDED VERSIONS, with COMMENTARIES, EXTRA INTERVIEWS, OUTTAKES, etc. i'm happy to just watch my DVDRs of the broadcast versions if there's nothing EXTRA for spending money.
anyway, let's hope there will be a EUROPEAN DVD release of the complete season 1.
oh, and whoever owns the rights to "A Cook's Tour" -- PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE release those Season sets!!!

Jamie Oliver - Happy Days Tour Live (2002) Review

Jamie Oliver - Happy Days Tour Live (2002)

Jamie Oliver is a highly creative cook who inspires cooks everywhere and even inspires people who have never cooked before. To say he is entertaining would be an understatement. I have yet to see anything like the Jamie Oliver Tour. He includes just about every element of entertainment possible in one show. It is a game show, cooking class, cooking competition, music gig, sports event, comedy show, talk show (he almost interviews some of the audience members), magic show and sing along. Basically this is Jamie Oliver's mind on cooking and he is in constant motion, meeting every challenge and even batting oranges into the audience to select people to join him on stage.
The recipes are simple to make and after watching this show you might find yourself trying out something new, and not even measuring anything. I tried his idea with the foil bag to cook fish and it was one of the best dinners I've ever made. The ideas transcend recipes and enter the arena of creative exploration. You can cook with what you have in the kitchen. Don't have leeks? Try onions and potatoes. Want to learn to make your own pasta? Is it really as simple as eggs and flour? Watching Jamie Oliver maker pasta is like watching an artist create. Where he excels is in how he transfers his knowledge to the audience members and they to learn to make pasta, right on stage and he turns it into a competition.
While fast paced and wildly funny, there are a few casual moments to relax. Jamie challenges himself to make Pizza before the Pizza guy arrives. He orders pizza and then tosses flour on the counter and begins to make pizza dough from scratch. His ideas about sun dried tomatoes and fresh mozzarella will make you wish you'd been to the store for the ingredients. In fact, you might want to stock up on ingredients and cook along with Jamie. He really helps to make life less ordinary and more extraordinary.
The new apartment is the entire stage and the set is filled with surprises to entertain. You will start to wish you had a kitchen computer. Jamie leaves the set now and then and there is a screen showing a night out on the town, what it is like to cook in a restaurant kitchen and his wife checks in with him to find out what he is making for dinner. He even makes a cheesecake and then delivers it for a birthday party.
By watching Jamie cook, you can learn basic techniques, time saving tricks and creative uses for herbs and spices. Everything he has taught me to make through his shows and this DVD has turned out to be absolutely delicious and I love the fact that a lot of the things I learn don't require me to measure ingredients.

Martha Inc (2003) Review

I purchased this movie thinking I really wasn't going to enjoy. Boy, was I wrong! Cybill did an outstanding job portraying Martha Stewart. The actors and actresses brought the characters to life in this movie. Though the movie may not be 100% factual, it's a must to add to your collection. You will see a woman working hard at any cost to get where she wants to be in life, but also realizing MONEY isn't everything!
