Scariest Places on Earth (2000) Review

Usually, when I see "haunted places" stories, they are the standard, lame fare of other people telling stories and no actual footage of these people in the haunted places. No proof in other words. This video is different. When I first saw it, I was rather excited at the concept. A family spends the night in a haunted place using scientific tools to measure changes in atmosphere and temperature. I watched, eager to see how this was going to unfold. Not only was I kept hooked to this story, but it was truly frightening in many places. For example, there was a doll that was sweating on its own, a piano that played itself (it wasn't a trick or the kind that is made to play on its own), furniture that moved on its own, voices that came from nowhere and screams that were not made by the visitors or the crew. I highly recommend this video. You won't be dissapointed!

Knights of Bloodsteel (2009) Review

I thought this was a pretty good fantasy epic made on a minimal budget. You can not really compare this to LoTR because LoTR was made on a nine figure budget were KofB may have been made on a couple million, if that. I think it was nicely made on the budget it was given, and it is also nice to see a fantasy adventure in a television world ruled by reality television and CSI clones.

Larva (2005) Review

In a small rural company town where just about everyone raises cattle for the local meat company, strange things have started to happen. Kids out cow tipping one night discover a dead cow. Soon there are others. The new local vet gets called in to look at the mysterious deaths. He can not see any problem until what looks like a normal parasite comes in contact with a drop of his blood. It grows and he sends it of for testing.
Soon the vet is convinced that something is very wrong and the cattle should be quarantined, an idea not met with much approval by the locals. Unfortunately the vet has a reputation for yelling fire prematurely.
The plot develops nicely and the suspense builds steadily. Effects and acting are better than most. The ending leaves a little unanswered but most won't notice it. All in all it was a very nice tribute to the great monster films of a few decades ago. Check it out.

Earthsea (2004) Review

Earthsea (2004)

First off, I am not a slave to the book when judging adaptations. I understand and appreciate that what often works in books doesn't always translate onto the big or little screen. BUT, having said that this is NOT an adaptation. Instead it feels more like the Ciff notes as written by someone who has never read the books. I know that movies have to leave out a lot of details, but "Earthsea" leaves out nearly every detail. Instead, it feels like a total strip down of the story; like Ms. Le Guin's discarded first draft.
As a fantasy by-the-books movie, I can recommend this only to people who are just looking to pass a few hours.
But, as has been expressed below by Ms Pamela Thomas, I am worried that people will see this and completely ignore the books. If I hadn't read the books and saw the movie my first reaction would be: "Oh boy, those Le Guin books sure are overrated." And that can't be further from the truth!
Skip the movie, read the book!

Based on Ursula K. Le Guin's multiple award-winning classic tale comes this richly imagined epic mini-series. In the magical world of EarthSea, the Amulet of Peace has ensured harmony between humans and dragons for centuries. But when the Amulet is broken and a piece of it disappears, it's up to a neophyte wizard to restore balance and stop a nefarious king from conquering EarthSea's islands.

The Triangle (2005) Review

The Triangle (2005)

Billionaire and shipping mogul Eric Benirall (Sam Neil)contacts four people (Eric Stoltz, Bruce Davidson, Catherine Bell and Michael Rodgers)with expertise in different from psychic ability to weather conditions with one skeptical reporter in the mix to discover why his ships keeping disappearing in the Sargasso Sea or the Bermuda Triangle. When a 747 goes down into the area and they investigate they discover the plane looks like its been submerged for fifty or sixty years. When they come back from the region they begin having strange experiences suggesting that reality has somehow been altered for them.
A fun diversion, "The Triangle" comes with a good pedigree; it's written by Rockne O'Bannon who created "Farscape" based on a story by O'Bannon, Bryan Singer (director of "The X-Men", "Superman Returns" and "The Usual Suspects")and Dean Devlin (co-producer and writer of "Independence Day" and "Stargate"). These three come up with a unique story that is an involving and fascinating puzzle.
Lion's Gate has the mini-series on two discs with a play all feature for the episodes. There's also a promotional featurette that ran on the Sci-Fi Channel included. The extras are disappointing to say the least with no commentary track, no featurettes on the production (outside of the promo one)or the visual effects on the show. The image quality of the series is top notch throughout most of the set although some of the night scenes could have used a bit more contrast.
Overall this is a fine mini-series with some top notch performances that recalls "The X-Files" in terms of the strong plotting and mystery. While the second episode felt stretched a bit the show is an entertaining diversion. This is a terrific set despite the lack of extras and well worth watching if you're a science fiction or fantasy fan.
