Scooby-Doo Meets the Boo Brothers (2000) Review

Scooby-Doo Meets the Boo Brothers (2000)
Average Reviews:

How could any Scooby fan not like this movie. The action picks up within the first 5 minutes and never lets down. Some parts of this film actually are scary. Scooby and Shaggy encounter a headless horseman, a ghost wolf, caped skeleton, huge gorilla, and even a dead Confederate general (sporting the Confederate flag right there on hat). The scenery of the film is another characteristic that makes it great. It ranges from the haunted mansion to secret Civil War supply caves. The new movies that Warner Bros. are releasing are getting cheesier and cheesier. They need to write another script like this for a hit movie, and livin' "down south", you like this film even more.......

The Smurfs Season 2, Vol. 1: True Blue Friends (2009) Review

The Smurfs Season 2, Vol. 1: True Blue Friends (2009)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a single DVD with the following episodes on it:
S-Shivering S-Smurfs - An early winter comes to Smurf Village and Tracker is the only one prepared and saves the village.
Turncoat Smurf - Gargemel uses his dog to track down the Smurfs after finding Brainy's laundry.
The Smurf Who Couldn't Say No - Pushover Smurf is used to do all the work and puts out the Fox Fire awakening a monster.
The Haunted Castle - Johan & Peewit' meet a ghost in a drought filled countryside with the Smurfs help they end the drought.
The Black Hellebore - After the king is poisoned by the potion maker, to wake the king Johan & Peewit' need the antidote from Homnubus. The potion maker later uses the evil Hellebore flower to try and take over the kingdom.
The title sequence of each episode is the newest of the three opening sequences that I know of. The one on the Season 1 DVD's was something about Smurfs being good and Gargemel being Bad, the one from most of when I was growing up had Gargemel chanting "total destruction from mountain to shore", and this one was used when Peewit' & Johan were main characters has Papa singing while the dam is bing built. I don't know if there was an additional opening for when the Smuflings were in the show.
This DVD has the same issue that the Season 1 DVD's did where the menu is much louder then the episodes. I just wish that they would have continued to release the seasons, this was just a tease of what should have been released.

The Smurfs are a group of over 100 bluish, three-apple tall creatures who live in the mushroom homes of Smurf Village. They are led by 543-year-old Papa Smurf (who doesn't look a day over 530). Their lives would be perfect were it not for the villainous Gargamel, a wizard who spends his days trying to capture them to eat, turn into gold, or for other evil reason. Gargamel's cat Azrael adds to the menace, always looking for a smurfalicious snack.. Its Season Two, Vol. 1 of Smurf Adventures, the Emmy-winning animated series [Outstanding Childrens Entertainment Series 1982-83] that delighted Saturday morning cartoon fans for nearly a decade.

The dvd consists of 5 episodes. I do not understand why it takes months to release 5 episdes, at leasts with volumes I and II, there were 20+ episodes. I like this dvd better than the previous one- True Blue Friends, because Gargamel is at least one of the villians in 3 or 4 of the episodes. I would like for the next dvd to be Volume III consisting of 20+ episodes.

The pricing of these DVDs are ridiculous if you add up the total to get this volumes of a complete season of "Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?" you are paying more then you would just buying the complete 2 seasons on DVD. *See Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest (Season 1, Vol. 1) (2009) Review

The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest (Season 1, Vol. 1) (2009)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Warner Brothers finally decided to break out this gem. Before this DVD set came out the ONLY offering on DVD was a dinky single episode DVD (Escape to Questworld was the episode) with no stereo track or extras of any kind. This two disk DVD set gives you 13 episodes and a bonus interview/retrospective with the show's producers. Oh yeah... full stereo audio and English subtitles (you really can't expect surround sound for a 90's cartoon).
The Real Adventures of Johnny Quest is a re-imaging of the classic 60's television. Don't expect the same kind of format that the old one had to be here. It's not really even in the same spirit as the classic series. For one in the old series it was mainly the adults (Dr. Benton Quest and Race) who did much of the problem solving and Johnny was mostly an active spectator. This time around Johnny and his friends are the ones solving the problems. The problems are also not quite the same, but then again we already have the classic series to enjoy. This one may be different, but it stands on its own merits.
When I first watched this show I was a bit put off. One of the things that bugged me was the show seemed to try hard to be cutting edge with the use of some computer generated animation scenes that were used when anybody went into a virtual reality called Questworld. As off putting as this was at first when I finally sucked it up and just saw the show for how the plot develops it was clear this wasn't some flash in the pan production. Eventually the whole Questworld thing kind of phased out of the series in turn for more plots involving the real world.I won't go so far as to say it's as groundbreaking as the original, but I will say they were pretty creative with this show.
While I am glad to see the show finally get some DVD rotation I am disappointed that Warner Brothers went the cheap route and only made a partial release. Considering there are only 52 episodes created that amounts to not much more footage than a first season of shows like Heroes or 24. At this rate Warner Brothers will have to make two more collections for you to get the whole series. Why not put the entire series on one DVD set and get ALL of the fans on board the first time around? Testing the waters? Too scared to simply go for it? Too cheap or greedy maybe?
The Real Adventures of Johnny Quest has a lot of the same elements of the original shows with globe-trotting to exotic locales and brush-ups with high technology while at the same time having a very different look and feel. It's not a bad change, mind you. Fans of the original should still like this. The writing is much better that a lot of what was out there in those days and it's even better than most of what's coming out now.

What's New Scooby Doo is the first Scooby Doo sequal that equals the quality of the original "Scooby Doo Where Are You?" series. The animation style may be updated somewhat (the original was not great animation anyway), but the stories are just as good. If you only liked the first series and hated Scrappy & the others, I suggest you give this new series a try. The original gang is all here on their original rolls.

The Scooby-Doo Dynomutt Hour - The Complete Series (2005) Review

The Scooby-Doo Dynomutt Hour - The Complete Series (2005)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The 1976-1977 Saturday morning TV season saw the premiere of The Scooby-Doo/Dynomutt Hour. This show was composed of a half-hour Scooby-Doo episode and a half-hour Dynomutt episode. These were the first new Scooby-Doo episodes produced in 3 years, and the very first episodes ever of Dynomutt. In total, 16 episodes of Scooby-Doo and 16 episodes of Dynomutt were produced for this season. After only 13 airings of The Scooby-Doo/Dynomutt Hour, the show proved popular enough that it was expanded to 90 minutes and renamed The Scooby-Doo/Dynomutt Show, adding repeats of the original Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! episodes for the extra half-hour. The Scooby-Doo/Dynomutt Show aired the final 3 new episodes of each, and then repeated all 16 episodes of each for the remainder of the season. This is the ONLY season of The Scooby-Doo/Dynomutt Hour/Show, and so, YES, this DVD is complete with all 16 episodes produced for both Scooby-Doo and Dynomutt that aired under that title.
The 1977-1978 Saturday morning TV season saw the premiere of Scooby's All-Star Laff-a-Lympics, a 2-hour show composed of the half-hour debut of the Laff-a-Lympics, the half-hour debut of Captain Caveman and the Teen Angels, plus a half-hour of Scooby-Doo, and a half-hour of Dynomutt. The half-hour of Scooby-Doo aired repeats from The Scooby-Doo/Dynomutt Hour/Show, PLUS 8 new episodes. Similarly, the half-hour of Dynomutt aired repeats PLUS 4 new episodes as well. It's these new episodes of Scooby-Doo and Dynomutt that aired during Scooby's All-Star Laff-a-Lympics this season that some folks refer to as the "2nd season".
The 1978-1979 Saturday morning TV season gets even more confusing. 16 more new Scooby-Doo episodes were produced for this season. No new Dynomutt episodes were produced. The first 9 of these new episodes were first aired under the half-hour Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! show, complete with the original show's opening credits, just with new episodes. The remaining 7 new episodes (plus repeats of all 16) aired as part of the renamed Scooby's All-Stars, a 90-minute show composed of new and repeat half-hour episodes of the Laff-a-Lympics, new and repeat half-hour episodes of Captain Caveman and the Teen Angels, and new and repeat half-hour episodes of Scooby-Doo. It's these 16 new episodes of Scooby-Doo that some folks refer to as the "3rd season".
Now to add even more confusion, all Scooby-Doo episodes from these past three seasons, 40 episodes in total (16 + 8 + 16), were re-packaged together as The Scooby-Doo Show for syndication reruns. All Dynomutt episodes, 20 in total, were re-packaged together for both network and syndication reruns as Dynomutt, Dog Wonder. So most folks only know these episodes from the syndication repeats airing on cable networks like Cartoon Network, and not from their original airings.
As for the DVD, the GOOD news is that, YES, this DVD is complete with all 16 episodes produced for both Scooby-Doo and Dynomutt that aired under The Scooby-Doo/Dynomutt Hour/Show, from the ONLY season that the show aired. The video and audio are both great for a 30-year old show, with the Dynomutt episodes just a bit under par compared to the Scooby episodes. The bonus features are the best of any Scooby-Doo DVD set released thus far, particularly with the interviews with the voice cast: Casey Kasem, Nicole Jaffe, Heather North, etc.

But, there is BAD news and REALLY BAD news. The BAD news is that the 2006 Hanna-Barbera DVD releases so far for this year, for both this DVD set, and for The Flintstones Season 5 DVD set, show the "cheapening" in production for the product packaging. Gone are the plastic outer covering transparent slip covers that were on all the 2004 and 2005 Hanna-Barbera animated DVD sets. The DVD discs themselves are now stored two to a page, with one on top of the other, overlaying half of the one underneath it. More likely to scratch one while trying to get to the one below it, especially with the two-sided discs. It does make for a thinner boxed set.

And the REALLY BAD news: I was fully expecting to see The Scooby-Doo/Dynomutt Hour episodes as they originally aired back in 1976 when I first watched them on Saturday mornings. That means with the original opening credits with the original Scooby-Doo/Dynomutt theme song, and with the original closing credits. Heck, even the back of the DVD box listed partial lyrics from the original theme song. I was even hoping to see the modified opening credits when the show changed from Hour to Show, which was also noted on the back of the box. Whoever did the text for the back of the DVD box certainly did his homework and knew his stuff. But, boy was I surprised when I watched my first episode, and each episode thereafter. What you get is the opening credits for the syndicated re-packaged The Scooby-Doo Show followed by the Scooby-Doo episode, followed by the closing credits of The Scooby-Doo Show, followed by the opening credits of the re-packaged Dynomutt, Dog Wonder, followed by the Dynomutt episode, followed by the closing credits of Dynomutt, Dog Wonder. This is NOT how these shows originally aired in 1976.

Overall, if you are a fan of either Scooby-Doo or Dynomutt, and want to add these episodes and bonus material to your DVD collection, you will greatly enjoy this collection. However, if you are a completist, and want the episodes as they aired on their original network airing, or want every episode that aired in the re-packaged syndication reruns, you will be disappointed.

I just purchased the second volume from the Saturday Morning Cartoons 70's collection. Let me just say that I am quite pleased with this collection. I watched many of these cartoons during the 70's and it brings back many happy memories from childhood. The Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Show and the Banana Splits were the primary reasons of my purchase. The bridging sequences including the introduction to both Bugs Bunny/Road Runner and Banana Splits were not restored. However, I can't complain too much. I am unable to get the Cartoon Network Boomerang channel where I live and have been wanting to watch many of these cartoons for such a long time. I hope Warner Brothers continues to release more collections in the near feature. More Bugs Bunny/Road Runner and Banana Splits please! Also, would like to see the New Adventures of Huckleberry Finn with Michael Shea (Huck) and Lu Ann Haslam (Becky Thatcher); really campy but from part of the Banana Splits series. Thanks again Amazon!

I give this five stars, as I believe this is the best way to see some of these 1970's shows. Most of these have not yet been released on DVD, and to be honest: one episode is enought in some cases.
Those that have been previously released on DVD are worth the entire sets.
1962's THE JETSONS feels out of place here, but it was still in network re-runs on Saturday Mornings. However I wish another 1970's show would have bene included. As this is "volume 1" I am sure the missing shows will see their way to DVD.
These were all produced by Hanna-Barbera.

"Saturday Morning Cartoons: 1960's Volume 2" is kind of like that huge "sampler" tin of chocolates your family gets for Christmas every once in a while. There's a lot of variety, plenty for everybody, and the contents range from fantastic to gag-inducing.
This set, like the previous volume, collects a wide variety of cartoon series from the 1960's, and attempts to present them as closely to their original TV presentation as possible. It's a great idea on Warner's part, as it brings together material that may not warrant a complete box-set release by itself (or hasn't yet) in an affordable and enjoyable way.
The bulk of the material included here is of the Hanna-Barbera variety, and it's interesting to compare earlier, better material like "Quick Draw McGraw" to later efforts like "Atom Ant" and "Wally Gator". Towards the end of the 1960's, Hanna-Barbera had been cloning their "funny animal" formula so often that it grew even more stale with every new attempt. H-B eventually began focusing on "action" cartoons, and unfortunately the examples of these included on this set are among the weakest.
The collection opens with an episode from "The Quick Draw McGraw Show", nicely restored with its original opening theme song and supporting segments, "Snooper and Blabber" and "Augie Doggie". The animation on this show is limited and low-budget, but the writing and humor hold up extremely well, thanks in large part to writer Michael Maltese. Quick Draw is a Wild West hero who just happens to be a horse, Snooper and Blabber are a cat and mouse detective team, and Augie Doggie is a brainy sitcom-style kid living with his fater, Doggie Daddy. This episode, along with a second episode focusing on Quick Draw's famous alter-ego, "El Kabong", really makes me wish Warner had released the Quick Draw show as a standalone series collection.
Next up is a show that should be avoided at all costs. Though an interesting curio, there is absolutely no entertainment value in "The Space Kidettes", a show about a group of annoyingly cute space-age kids in a Jetsons-esque setting who are being stalked by a space pirate named Captain Skyhook. Its supporting segment, "Young Samson", is even worse, about a teenage boy named Samson and his dog, Goliath, who can transform into a superhero and a lion, respectively. How does a dog turn into a lion? That is a mystery I do not want to uncover...because to do it, I would have to watch more episodes! This show sucks, and is largely unheard of for VERY good reason.
"The Bugs Bunny Show" is a nice surprise, including the original "This Is It" title sequence and some long-lost bridging footage. Mac and Tosh, the Goofy Gophers, are the hosts, but end their incessant polite disagreement forces Bugs himself to introduce the cartoons to keep the show going. There is some footage missing, but everything is in color and presented as it would have aired in Saturday Morning reruns. All three cartoons (minus titles and credits, as they originally aired) look fine: "Big House Bunny' and "Canned Feud" are the restored "Golden Collection" versions, "Home Tweet Home" is not, but it's a better transfer than I've seen before.
"The Porky Pig Show" compiles three more Warner Bros. classics with the original opening, closing and several bumper segments from that TV package. An interesting "skit" that probably originated on the "Bugs Bunny Show" has Bugs Bunny playing piano on stage, in animation re-traced from "Rhapsody Rabbit", to introduce the musical short "Baton Bunny". The other two shorts included are "Scaredy Cat" and "Feather Dusted", and all but the third are restored. "Feather Dusted" is at least uncut and is a perfectly acceptable copy.
Next, we get another "lost treasure" from Hanna-Barbera, entitled "The Adventures of Gulliver". A young man named Gulliver and his father go on a sea voyage with a treasure map to a lost island, a creepy stowaway thug knocks them out, steals the map, and Gulliver wakes up shipwrecked with his dog on the island of Lilliput. What follows is little more than a loosely updated knockoff of the old Jonathan Swift tale "Gulliver's Travels". It will probably be of interest only to those who recall seeing it as kids. No flaws in terms of print quality, picture or sound here.
"The Wally Gator Show" is a fondly-remembered 3-cartoon variety show featuring "Wally Gator", "Touche Turtle", and "Lippy Lion and Hardy Har-Har". Unfortunately, it was a hastily-produced and thoroughly lackluster series, aimed squarely at children. Wally Gator longs to roam free in the Everglades, instead he's stuck in a zoo with a nagging zookeeper named Mr. Twiddle. Touche Turtle is a diminutive do-gooder voiced by Bill "Droopy Dog" Thompson, who dresses like a French musketeer and tries to help people (in this case, Captain Ahab) along with his aptly named dog sidekick, Dum Dum. Lippy the Lion and his depressed, sad-sack hyena sidekick Hardy Har Har (brilliantly voiced by Mel Blanc) are easily the best of the bunch, but they, too, seem cookie-cutter and forced. If these cartoons have not aged well content-wise, they have fared even worse physically. Originally mastered on cheap film, they look muddy, scratchy and at times out of focus. For those nostalgia buffs longing to see this stuff beautifully restored, you won't find it here!
A classic "Jetsons" episode entitled "Elroy's Mob" rounds out the first disc. Young Elroy gets mixed up in a crime, and in typical 60's sitcom fashion, hilarity ensues, followed by a happy ending. It looks and sounds great, probably the same version used for the original series DVD set.
Disc Two begins with Quick Draw McGraw again, this time in the guise of "El Kabong", a masked, Zorro-like alter-ego who fights villains by bashing them on the head with a guitar. Once again, this does not disappoint, with razor-sharp humor and charm that can be enjoyed by young and old alike. Snooper, Blabber, Augie Doggie and Doggie Daddy once again hold the supporting segments, and are also worthwhile, "Augie" especially. As with the episode on Disc 1, everything from the opening and closing titles to the cartoon shorts in between look and sound great.
Following Quick Draw, we again descend into the abyss of Hanna-Barbera's decline with one of the strangest cartoon characters ever created: Peter Potamus. Peter is a fat, purple hippo who travels the world in a hot air balloon with his monkey pal, SoSo. In this episode, Peter gets caught in the middle of a fight between cowboys and Indians. The one highlight of this exercise in blandness is the voice work of Daws Butler, Don Messick, and Mel Blanc, but since the endless stream of talk is all there is to it, it gets boring in a hurry. When Peter (not to mention the audience!) has had enough, he dispatches his tormenters with his "Hippo Hurricane Holler". Translation: he screams loud enough that it literally blows everyone away. Supporting segments include "Breezly and Sneezly", a polar bear and a seal who have nothing better to do than annoy the soldiers at a military outpost in the Arctic, and "Yippie, Yappie and Yahooey", three dogs who serve as inept guards to a fussy Medieval king. It's hard to imagine anyone getting excited about any of these goofball critters, and though they have their moments, they pale in comparison to earlier H-B efforts and will probably bore kids and adults alike. The show's original opening and closing are included, and are in pretty rough shape, but the cartoons themselves look fine.
Once Peter and pals get the blandness out of their systems, we get an episode of "The Road Runner Show". I was really looking forward to this, and was very disappointed with the results! The original opening, closing, a rarely-seen animated bumper segments are included, as are the title cards created exclusively for this iconic package of Warner classics. The bumper segments are not to be missed: director Robert McKimson created these after the departure of Chuck Jones from the Warner Bros. animation studio, and while low-budget, they are extremely funny. Where the folks at Warner compiling this DVD collection went wrong, though, is evident in the cartoons themselves. Whereas the "Bugs Bunny" and "Porky Pig" shows mixed the old, worn-out TV bridging footage with nice, clean copies of the actual cartoons, the "Road Runner Show" gets a little TOO "authentic", using copies of the cartoons from the same old TV masters as the bridging animation. The results look terrible, especially the opening short, "Zip N' Snort", which looks so bad that Chuck Jones is probably turning in his grave over it. The other two cartoons included, Sylvester and Tweety in "The Jet Cage" and Road Runner, Wile E. Coyote and Speedy Gonzales' race-off "The Wild Chase", look just as awful, and there is absolutely no excuse for that. They are faded, scratchy and blurred. Why would you drink spoiled milk when you have a fresh, unopened carton in the same fridge? Maybe I've been spoiled by the wonderful restorations Warner released on the "Looney Tunes Golden Collection" DVD series, but these cartoons look worse than I've ever seen them, and including them in this manner is disgraceful.
Next comes "Atom Ant", another Hanna-Barbera series about a little ant with super powers. The title character is a snooze, but the supporting segments, "Precious Pupp" and "Hillbilly Bears", prove more entertaining. "Precious" isn't particularly funny, but he is an ancestor of one of H-B's most memorable and entertaining creations, Muttley. Precious shares Muttley's mumbling voice and wheezy laugh, but instead of Muttley's villainous master, Dastardly, Precious' companion is a sweet little old lady. The segment is not particularly clever or funny, but it's a nice try. "Hillbilly Bears"...Read more›
