(More customer reviews)Gunsmoke - The Third Season, Volume 1 continues the release schedule for one of television's alltime greatest television series. Beloved and revered, this series will always be considered one of the alltime best. Yes, because of its' longevity, but also because of the great acting, directing, and writing displayed on the series.
But still, I cannot recommend these sets. There is no excuse, no justification the studio can make for splitting a 20-season series up and dividing each season into multiple sets. It's greed, shortsighted, fear of producing full season sets that won't sell - maybe one or more or all of these things. But the Western lover, loyal as we are to our favorite stars, our favorite movies and series, are being made to pay a price that is way too high to pay. To think how long it may be before the entire series is released is too painful. Suffice it to say that it will be WAY TOO LONG at the current rate.
At this point, it is probably too much to expect the studio to come to its senses. But it is worth it to say that they need to come to their senses, and soon.

(More customer reviews)John Bromfield stars as Frank Morgan in this violent, modern-day (1950s) Western set in Arizona. For the first two seasons of the series (1956-58), the show was titled "Sheriff of Cochise (a/k/a "The Man from Cochise") in which Morgan was the Sheriff of Cochise County. During the series' final two seasons (1958-60), Morgan became a U.S. Marshal for the state of Arizona and was based in neighboring Tucson in "United States Marshal." The show was more of a crime show with a Western setting and Morgan's transportation of choice was not a horse but rather a station wagon equipped with a rifle mounted on the inside of the driver's door. The episodes included on this DVD include plenty of early performances by future television and movie stars, including Charles Bronson (The Dirty Dozen, Death Wish series), Michael Landon (Bonanza, Little House on the Prairie), Mike Connors (Mannix), Martin Milner (Route 66, Adam-12), Robert Fuller (Laramie, Wagon Train, Emergency!), Jack Lord (Stoney Burke, Hawaii Five-0), and Donna Douglas (The Beverly Hillbillies). The series's star, John Bromfield, effectively retired from acting at the conclusion of this series.
Platinum Disc Corporation's DVD is a real find as this series has rarely been seen since its original broadcast and was difficult to find on VHS tape. Quality wise, you'll find some film specks and scratches and Platinum's logo which appears from time-to-time in the bottom right hand corner of the screen but, generally speaking, these episodes look and sound good . . . just don't expect modern "high definition" quality. Some of the information included on the DVD cover is incorrect. For starters, the DVD includes 9 episodes rather than the 8 listed on the cover. Some of the episode titles are incorrectly listed and, finally, episodes are said to be 39 minutes long when, in fact, they run approximately 26 minutes each (without commercials) and were produced for a half-hour time slot. These errors aside, kudos to Platinum for releasing episodes from this hard-to-find series, as well as episodes from other Westerns from TV's golden age, including "Stories of the Century" and "Shotgun Slade."
Except as noted, all episode titles are from "United States Marshal." The corrected episode titles include:

Everything about the production and marketing of this DVD is of high quality, which means you really get a lot for your money.
However there are no subtitles for the hearing impaired or for any foreign languages, but then again you rarely do for any vintage or classic TV Show!
The Main Menu has access to a very extensive catalogue listing, as well a previews of other titles available from Alpha Video Classics.
This is most probably why there are only 4 episodes per disc in this five disc collection.
The picture quality is excellent throughout each episode, as they really did a good job on lighting every scene in those days, so all indoor scenes and outdoor shady scenes are viewable, and the fast paced action scenes are of top quality.
These horse riding and shooting scenes are always a real treat, and would be just as exciting for the young ones today as they were for the young ones back in the 50's, 60's and 70's.
The sound quality is excellent also!
I have watched every episode on all 5 volumes of this collection, and there is absolutely NO fault in picture or sound on any episode, which helps make this series on sale most enjoyable to sit back with the entire family and relive the old days of television.
In case you are wondering each episode has the Annie Oakley Signature Intro and credits, with Annie doing her world famous stunts and shooting a neat hole in the centre spade of a nine of spades playing card being held up by Lofty, while Annie is standing upright on the saddle on Target her trusty Palomino, who is racing past Lofty at high speed!
You just can't get anything better than that!

I loved this series when I was a kid.
I have lived in Australia all my life.
I was born in 1954.
Back in the 1960's we were inundated with great TV Westerns from the US, and Annie Oakley is one of the best!
