Dirty Tricks (2000) Review

Dirty Tricks (2000)

A BBC story outrageously funny. Strong casting, plenty of Brit stars, with twists that keep you watching like a Midsomer Murder. But it is a Martin Clunes, before his superlative Doc Martin series, that pulls the dirty tricks. How can this DVD be compared to that super-level of comedy in Doc Martin? Close, but not quite.
Clunes, as Edward, begins the tale explaining to viewers he is avoiding CID Moss (James Bolam-yes, `the' Beiderbecke) and heading out of the country to avoid arrest for a double murder. Moss investigates just like in the Beiderbecke series. Edward didn't do it, he says. It's technically true, and he begins the explanation from 2 years previous.
A crazed adulteress, Karen (Julie Graham-`Bonekickers' see it), tags Edward as her unlikely victim and begins numerous assaults to his person using every room of her home, but only when her hubby, CPA Dennis (Neil Dudgeon), is nearby. Kinky? The tan-less skin, vocabulary, and graphic activity is overdone, but there was a warning on the box. Get by the overexposure and the plot gets comic.
There are some unfortunate accidents, resulting in death, but also financial opportunity for others. Thus, the plot to twist the truth into a profitable outcome turns up the hilarity. Another female, twists the mix, using Lindsay Duncan (Under the Tuscan Sun; Rector's Wife) as Edwards new flame as he tries to put the loss of his first love onto innocent Clive, well not so innocent in all things.
Strangely, found the musical score quite appropriate and nice. Some great visuals of England and Wales. The drama is based on a Michael Dibdin book. Writing caused it to get the Int. Emmy win. Martin Clunes has soared upward in comedy excellence since this 2000 role. Perhaps he's as good playing Edward, as he is playing Dr Martin. He did a very good job as Edward playing a bad actor trying to avoid a murder trial. Perhaps it's just the level he has obtained in current TV episodes that makes this DVD seem less. Bottom line, even with the overworked lust angle, the 2 episode show brings on laughs out loud.
SUBTITLES included. Dibdin bio and 5 filmographies included.
As for the sensual, mystery, relationships, and blame...one must define "DIRTY" and "TRICKS" for each aspect.

"Hilarious (and decidedly naughty)" --The Daily Telegraph (U.K.) "Thriller with a sharply comic edge" --The Mirror (U.K.)
Martin Clunes in an award-winning black comedy seen on BBC America
Part bawdy bedroom farce, part zany crime caper, this saucy British romp stars Martin Clunes (Doc Martin, Men Behaving Badly) as a charming underachiever on the run from the law. Sure, he\'s manipulative, moneygrubbing, and completely amoral. But is he a murderer? Absolutely not, he insists--despite the pesky corpses piling up.
After befriending an accountant (Neil Dudgeon, Life of Riley, Midsomer Murders), he beds the man\'s randy wife, Karen (Julie Graham, At Home with the Braithwaites), before a wealthy widow (Lindsay Duncan, Traffik, Alice in Wonderland) next catches his eye. When Karen meets an untimely demise, a plodding police detective (James Bolam, New Tricks, Beiderbecke trilogy) gets involved, and things take a decidedly dicey turn.
Winner of an International Emmy® for best drama and based on the book by Michael Dibdin (the Aurelio Zen mysteries), Dirty Tricks sends up modern marriage and mores with wit as crisp and intoxicating as the best British gin.
Contains nudity, strong language, and graphic sexual situations

The humor is timeless and some of the best comedy I've seen in a while. I love British humor, but somehow never heard of this series until recently. Catch some of season 3 or 4 on YouTube if you want an idea of what it's like. Each year gets better and better!

Beyond the Fringe (2005) Review

Beyond the Fringe (2005)

Inspired by The Goon Show, inspiring "At Last The 1948 Show", "Do Not Adjust Your Set" and "Monty Python's Flying Circus", a film of the original "Beyond The Fringe" surfacing is cause for celebration of British Humor the world over!!!
This presentation has the complete West End/Broadway show, and runs a side-aching 116 minutes. *Very* funny stuff, this!
However, despite the box's claims, this *not* the first released, nor the *only* filming of "Beyond The Fringe." As any maven of early '80's U.S. Midnight movies knows, that honor goes dubiously to the poorly filmed and terribly recorded document of their Royal Command Performance reunion with Monty Python's Flying Circus at Prince Albert Hall from 1972, released in the U.S. as "Monty Python Meets Beyond The Fringe." U.S. filmgoers (at any rate)left the theatre badly puzzled: The audience knew all the punchlines, and began laughing at them, and shouting at them before they were even uttered, drowning the actors out on the film's soundtrack. That Command Performance has mercifully remained unreleased on Videotape and DVD, THIS performance fortunately is MUCH better! It is hilarious!
This is the 1964 farewell performance from London's West End. It is well enough recorded, sonically speaking, although sometimes some castmembers seem unevenly miked or undermiked, or worse have a microphone drop-out for a second or two. Furthermore, it *is* in Black & White, which the product review doesn't seem to mention in any prominent way. Putting on the subtitles will help you with the occasional mike drop-out, but the B&W format does not contrast the stage set very well, and may seem a bit drab to the 21st century viewer. However, don't let these details scare you away: this really *was* (and remains) one of the funniest things seen on stage since the Marx Bros. "Animal Crackers" in 1929!!!

Before The Daily Show, before Saturday Night Live, even before Monty Python, there was Beyond the Fringe-the 1960s West End and Broadway hit revue that reinvented comedy. While another Fab Four was revolutionizing music, Alan Bennett, Peter Cook, Dudley Moore, and Jonathan Miller were giving birth to the British satire boom. With nothing but their brilliant writing and inspired performances, they created side-splitting comedy that held nothing and no one sacred. In the process, the four performers became international stars. It was long thought that no filmed record of the original cast existed, until this gem was discovered in a producer’s vault. A 1964 gala farewell performance in London, it features the troupe’s classic sketches, including "Man Bites God," "Aftermyth of War," and "One Leg Too Few."

How Clean Is Your House?: Seasons 1 and 2 (2005) Review

How Clean Is Your House: Seasons 1 and 2 (2005)

The DVD's for sale are produced by Lifetime TV, not BBC, and are episodes made here in the United States, not the ones made in Great Britain. These are just as good as the British episodes. It was great to have epsiodes to watch I had never seen before, and fun to see my hometown in one. Although I was expecting the BBC version, the American ones are worth the price as well. You get thirty-five shows on four discs. Kim & Aggie's charm translates just as well over here. Grime & clutter know no boundaries. I was tickled pink to see these DVD's available & will glady purchase more seasons, BBC or Lifetime.

Kim and Aggie, the unstoppable hygiene experts, invade the U.S. to see inside some of the dirtiest homes imaginable and meet the occupants. Can they stop the rot? How Clean Is Your House? is a hugely successful international home make-over show with a difference, fighting filth and dishing the dirt on grime!
