Miffy and Friends: Miffy's Playtime (2004) Review

Not to imply that television needs its own introduction for children, but since the TV was crafted, human's have been watching it. Everyone needs a half hour or so to sit and either be informed, entertained and in todays world even shocked in the comfort of their own home. There's nothing wrong with watching TV and the time in a day is very long for a toddler, even longer for the parent chasing after one. So if you need to prepare dinner, read the paper, or even just sit down and day dream, this is the perfect video to get that slight, however much needed break from finger painting and reading that one book twenty times. First, I believe this is called stop animation, which is more enjoyable and easier for children to watch rather than the fast flashing of most cartoons. Then there's the narrartor, a soft, pleasant woman's voice which tells each story in the right of amount expression, like Alec Baldwin's voice in the Thomas The Tank Engine series. The same, familiar, sunny voice that draws children to the story. Also the stories are short, the music is happy, the characters are diverse and very thoughtful of each other. The little animal families are ones all children will relate to as there's the only child, Miffy, with her mother and father, Grunty the Pig who lives with his Aunt Poppy, Boris and Barbara Bear who are married, but with no kids and all of Miffy's classmates and friends.
Then there are the brief breaks between each story which poses more of a word problem, for example, instead of just counting three flowers, three birds and three worms the child is asked after counting three flowers and three birds, if there's one worm under each flower how many worms are there. Which isn't going to make your child a wizard at math, but for a childrens video, I feel this is a more creative approach to the vidoes educational value.
Nothing is more important that reading to your child and taking your child out to the park or your neighborhood recreation center to educate and stimulate your childs mind. But I will admitt I'd rather my young child say Miffy is their favorite program than that big, purple, goofey and borderline frightening phoney dinosaur. Just for an option.

Nick Jr. Favorites - Vol. 4 (2004) Review

Nick Jr. Favorites - Vol. 4 (2004)
Average Reviews:

"Nick Jr. Favorites 4" is the fourth in this continuing series and features six Nick Jr. programs. It's another great selection overall, dampened only by the usual lack of special features.
Seen on this DVD:"The Backyardigans"
Pirate Treasure
A great selection from this wonderful, colorful, musical Nelvana serie that will soon be featuring more new episodes on Nick Jr. In this absolutely classic episode, the Backyardigans pretend to be pirates, and as everyone knows, pirates say "arr." Like most of the episodes of the show --- this one features four of the characters, and this is one where they're split up into two groups. Captains Uniqua and Austin hunt for treasure, followed closely by Captains Pablo and Tyrone. Both pirate teams have half a map --- but with only half each, how will either find the treasure?"Blue's Clues"
100th Episode Celebration
A great choice. This celebration episode consists in large part of clips from past episodes, but it's well put together. It also features a special visit from Steve. He's wearing a top-hat in this episode --- nobody knew it at the time, but as recently announced in the behind-the-scenes special, one of the main reasons for him leaving the show was that he was losing his hair. This special was a perfect way to have him back on for a bit, and the hat, of course, appeared perfectly normal!"LazyTown"
Prince Stingy
This was one of the few episodes of the program I hadn't seen, so I was pleased that it was on this DVD. When Stingy fantasizes about being a prince, Robbie Rotten concocts a scheme to make his dream come true. But Robbie's rotten plan comes with some strings attached --- such as making up rules to get rid of that "blue elf" --- *FOREVER!!!*"Little Bill"
Racing Time / All Tied Up
If there's any one reason to get this DVD, this is it. "Little Bill" no longer airs on Nick Jr. and with CBS no longer airing Nick Jr. programming starting September 2006, "Little Bill" may very well be off the airwaves. So it's wonderful to see this on the DVD. In the first story, Little Bill learns how to get to school on time. And in the second, he gets help tying his shoes. Also included on this DVD are "Dora the Explorer" and "Max and Ruby." I don't think much of either show, but I know they're pretty popular. The "Dora" episode is "¡Rapido, Tico!" and "Max & Ruby" features three stories --- "Max Cleans Up / Max's Cuckoo Clock / Ruby's Jewelry Box."

Nick Jr. Favorites: Animal Friends (2009) Review

I love that Nick Jr. puts out these dvds that has a variety of their popular kids shows on them, rather than buy one dvd all of the same show. My 2 & 1/2 year old has broadened her horizons by watching some of these 'new to her' shows, and now she likes many more things besides Barney and Blues Clues.
This particular dvd gets a lot of play time at our house, it's often what she asks for when she gets tv time and I think it was very reasonably priced for what you get - money well spent.

Blue's Clues - Blue's Big Musical Movie (2000) Review

Blue's Clues - Blue's Big Musical Movie (2000)

I bought this DVD about a month before my son's 2nd birthday. From day 1 he loved it. He doesn't much care for Joe so I bought this is Blue's Clues Classic clues (wich he's only watched a few times). This is his absolute FAVORITE movie (he's watching it right now as we speak). My son's a High Energy child and rarely sits still to watch tv. He sits through this ENTIRE movie from beginning to end with very little movement (sometimes I want to put a mirror under his nose to make sure he's still breathing, LOL) He adores the music and the basic Blue's Clues plot. He loves screaming A CLUE A CLUE! and of course the music. His favorite is "The Show" song wich he sings everytime it comes on. I like the Ray Charles part the best and my son enjoys it to, he just says "Hey Hey, shooba dee day. Bee bop bay, hey hey. I can't tell where it comes from but when you sing SING sing there it is. The reason i love that is because MY SON DOESN'T TALK ALOT, LOL. He CAN talk he just chooses not to most of the time (wich is why I'm grateful for ASL but that's another review). This movie was worth every penny and I'd buy it again in a heartbeat. Money well spent!
