Brum - Stunt Bike Rescue and other Stories (2004) Review

Brum - Stunt Bike Rescue and other Stories (2004)

My kids (1.5 yrs and 3.5 yrs) learned of Brum one early morning when we chanced upon it on the Discovery Kids channel. It's really amazing. I am not sure why they love it, but they do. All about this little antique car that 'saves the day in big town' in each episode (his name is Brum), the episodes are all live-action (ya gotta love that!) and filled with music. Oddly, I saw BRUM on sale at a radio shack store as a radio-controlled car, so I bought one for the kids. It's one of those shows they ask for in the morning now, so I was thrilled to see the videos hit the shelves.

The Baby Whisperer (Vol. 1) (2002) Review

The Baby Whisperer (Vol. 1) (2002)
Average Reviews:

While Tracey Hogg has some wonderful advice in her book - of the same title - about how to interact with your newborn, the video seems to gloss right over it. It seemed like whole chapters were presented in mere minutes and important sections were left out. Plus, the sections that featured questions from real parents seemed canned and corny. All this being said, the book is terrific. Skip the video - read the book instead.

In this groundbreaking Video, Tracey Hogg concentrates her vast knowledge (and huge dose of common sense) into simple, accessible programs that parents can begin after the baby is born.Reassuring, down-to-earth, and often flying in the face of conventional wisdom, "The Baby Whisperer" promises parents not only a healthier, happier baby but a more relaxed and happy household as well.

Signing Time Vol. 1: My First Signs DVD (2002) Review

Signing Time Vol. 1: My First Signs DVD (2002)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'd like to correct the reviewer who said that the Signing Time videos don't teach the words "please" or "thank-you". I own all three DVDs in the set, and I know those words are taught. Volume 2, "Playtime Signs", teaches both of those words. It even includes a song about them, called, "Magic Words". Currently, the desciption of the Volume 2 DVD on Amazon.com lists the wrong words, so don't trust it. For accurate information about the videos, visit the Signing Time website at www.signingtime.com. You can also see video clips there.
A strong point of the Signing Time videos is the fact that each word is demonstrated by several different people. This is important, because everyone signs a little differently. Other videos, which generally use only one demonstrator, have left me wondering how exact I have to be in imitating the sign in order to have it recognized as the intended sign.
This video is the first one in the series, and was made a year or two before the latter two videos. The producers appear to have learned a lot from making the first video, and the latter two are even better (they've added songs, present words in groups, have better filming, and moved the "Introduction" by Rachel into it's own segment, so you don't have to watch it every time you play the main feature). The latter two videos also include more words - about 30 each, instead of just 18, as in this video.
One thing that has disappointed me about the Signing Time videos is that they leave out a lot of important words that are commonly used with babies & toddlers (which is why I only rate it with 4 stars). I would rather learn "diaper" and "bottle" than "fish" and "bird". Happily, I discovered the "Baby See 'N Sign" videos, which do a great job of filling this gap. I would recommend "Baby See 'N Sign" to all serious baby-signers, in addition to the Signing Time series. The second "Baby See 'N Sign" video was made specifically from words that were requested by parents. The "See 'N Sign" videos aren't as cute as the "Signing Time" videos, but they are well-done, and they still hold my baby's attention. They also cover A LOT more words (60+ on the first video, and 100+ on the second). They're only available on VHS, which was a slight disappointment for me, but they are well worth having. Currently, Amazon.com only sells the first video, but you can order the second one from www.babyseensign.com.
I certainly hope the Signing Time people keep making more videos. It would be great if they would teach simple phrases, like "come here" and "I'll be right back", instead of just single words. I would also like to see more video snippets of children using signs as they play together, or interact with their parents, instead of just seeing children doing a single sign by themself. I also think they should show the object being signed in the same picture with the person who is doing the sign, instead of showing the sign, then the object, then the sign - each in separate clips. (To be fair, there are a few examples of someone doing a sign with the object present - but most of the time, that is not the case - and in some of the cases, they show a cartoon of the object instead of a real object, which I think isn't as effective.)
Overall, the Signing Time videos are well worth having, since the manner of presentation is very engaging, and they do an excellent job of holding a baby's attention.

Brainy Baby - Spanish (2002) Review

Brainy Baby - Spanish (2002)

When I saw one of the very negative reviews, I thought this person was exaggerating given that I had bought the Brainy Baby for French DVD and thought it was really good (quality and all), but I needed to buy an educational DVD for my 18 mo. old daughter in Spanish since is too my very first mother tongue. I decided to buy this DVD, specially because there are not many out there of this kind. When I saw it, I thought it wasn't that bad. It does have accents where there should be, and question marks (Did this person referred to an old version?) However, they did use a couple of words that I would not use in spanish so it's useless to teach a toddler words she would not use, like the word for ball (pelota), they used "bola". I think pelota is more widely used, not just in Mexico. That is my only criticism; they should have used a term that is common for many countries, so I think they should have done a little more research and the narrator would be fine. Her pronunciation is fenomenal (regardless whether or not she is a native speaker, it doesn't matter!). The content of the video is great, just what a toddler needs to learn a language in a fun way. My daughter enjoyed this DVD from beginning to end. It's just good enough to entertain my daughter without mindless TV cartoons.

From Conception to Birth (2005) Review

From Conception to Birth (2005)
Average Reviews:

At 7 months pregnant with my second child, I enjoyed this movie until I got tired of how often they reiterated how painful, practically impossible, and scary pregnancy and childbirth are. I mean, "Childbirth is like trying to fit a softball down your throat?" And they went on and on about how it should be physically impossible, how painful it is... all while showing moms in labor lying on their backs in hospital beds, hooked up to IVs and fetal monitors not being offered any pain relief (like walking around or being massaged or having a shower or a bath or any other comfort measures) until they finally "give in" and have the epidural... It's another ridiculous example of how our media distorts birth and helps cause our high cesarean rates and poor fetal outcomes. My young son was with me, and even he had the sense to say at the beginning, when they took a baby away from the mom immediately, "hey! that baby wants to be with its mother." I do have to say the images of the babies in the moms' bellies while they walked around were pretty awesome. But there was hardly any of that, unfortunately, and the rest of the video isn't worth watching to get to them.

Flannel Pajamas (2007) Review

Flannel Pajamas (2007)
Average Reviews:

Perhaps because I'm in middle age and have gone through a few relationships I could see the mistakes Stuart and Nicole were making all along the way to sabotage their relationship. I admired that in some ways the film was very honest. For instance it is not self-conscious about nudity and sex. When the couple begin to explore sex they simply take off their clothes. They don't walk out of the bathroom wearing bathrobes, the camera doesn't start hiding behind the furniture, etc. At a certain point the film politely draws the curtain, which is appropriate and preferable to the fake sex scenes we usually get in Hollywood movies. Unfortunately, the film's honesty is not enough. I found myself unable to care enough about Stuart and Nicole to stay engaged as their marriage gradually came apart. I found Stuart in particular quite unlikeable. His need to control and his air of self-importance put me off. Neither Stuart nor Nicole reaches out to anyone who could possibly help them. What is the point of Stuart talking to Nicole's girlfriend who doesn't believe in marriage and commitment, or Nicole's mother who has never liked him and tells him bluntly that she won't help? Given that they supposedly care about their relationship is it realistic that they do not reach out to anyone who really might be able to help - a counselor, therapist, minister, rabbi? Perhaps some people allow their relationships to crash and burn in this way, but it ain't pretty and I can't recommend watching it, except perhaps as a cautionary tale.

My Baby Can Talk - First Signs (2004) Review

My Baby Can Talk - First Signs (2004)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am an experienced signing parent, having signed with my second son and am currently signing with my 20-month-old daughter. I have seen many signing videos over the last four years, both as a parent and as a professional in the baby signing industry. Upon viewing My Baby Can Talk™ - First Signs DVD for the first time, I was very impressed for a number of reasons.
For starters, the movie itself is extremely engaging. I have my own little group of testers here in the house (three children) and I gauged their reactions carefully. My little girl, the youngest at 20 months, watched it the whole way through the first time with me by her side. She was able to connect the signs with the images on the screen quite easily with a little help from mom and genuinely enjoyed the footage of the animals the best (the panda having a snack is her favorite). I have not seen my daughter love a movie as much as she loves this one. She wants to watch it every day.
I also thought that it is really great to show both an adult as well as a baby signing every sign. This is helpful in more than one way - children get to see another child in their age group signing and they also get to see the sign signed with more precision by an adult. The repetition in the movie is perfect as well as the variety of images shown. It really reinforces the sign.
Love the classical music score, love the images, love the variety of signs ... all in all, 5 stars!

Disney's Little Einsteins - Rocket's Firebird Rescue (2007) Review

Disney's Little Einsteins - Rocket's Firebird Rescue (2007)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is one of the best Little Einsteins DVDs yet for exposing kids to classical music. Twice as long as a regular television program, its 51-minute main feature, "Rocket's Firebird Rescue," will really make children familiar with Igor Stravinsky's "The Firebird."
Just about the perfect length for many youngsters' attention spans, the program tells the tale of the Firebird, a mythical crane that spreads music throughout Russia until a mean, magical ogre traps it. It also introduces kids to the painting "Improvisation" by Wassily Kandinsky, the amazing eggs of Carl Faberge, Russian nesting dolls, even St. Basil's Cathedral and the Baikal freshwater seal.
It's even better if you view it with a home theater set-up, as the Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack includes the kids' "Rocket" flying machine zooming around you as it travels.
The DVD also contains a regular episode of the Little Einsteins television series, 2007's "Rocket Soup," in which the kids fill up their transporter with its favorite food, a mix of cheese, peas, and jumping beans. It features Antonin Dvorak's catchy "Humoresque No. 7" (you'll know it when you hear it) and the painting "Moonrise" by Paul Klee.
There is just one bonus feature, "Magic Mission," which plays the main feature with "hidden" pop-up cards. When selected with a remote, each leads to an animated fun fact.

This is the second Baby Einstein video I bought, the first being Neighborhood Animals. It is so colorful and eye catchy to young children. My child is 28-month's old with Autism. She normally does not like to watch videos for more then 10 minutes, but this one captivates her for the entire 30 minutes. Do not let the 101 minutes on the label fool you, that is 30 minutes of video and 61 minutes of music you can listen to like a CD. The animals are: Tigers, Elephants, Tropical Parrots, Giraffes, Dolphins, among many others all beautifully filmed in action. It is much like a really good PBS Nature show, but with each animal on the screen for no more then 5 minutes. In-between the animals segments there are puppets playing and some toys to watch- all animals of course. We love this video and it looks incredible on DVD! A must have as well as Neighborhood Animals. I just bought some more Baby Einstein DVD's and will review those as well, but the animal ones are by far the best.

Baby Einstein - Baby Galileo - Discovering the Sky (2003) Review

Baby Einstein - Baby Galileo - Discovering the Sky (2003)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I don't quite understand what is so horrible about Baby Galileo. Reviewers are saying how aweful it was, but are giving no explanation as to why, so I'm going to explain why it worked for me and my child.
I was extremely pleased with the Baby Galileo video. My daughter is three and a half years old and soaks in anything she sees. Although she is on the older end of the suggested ages for these videos, she still is learning from them and enjoying them. This video was a great way for her to learn the general ideas about the sky. The video opens with puppets, which are a trademark in Julie Clark's videos. There are narrations by children, and 15 different pieces of classical music ranging from Claire De Lune to Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. There are several chapters in the video introducing a new concept- those being the sky, the sun, the clouds, the stars, the moon, the planets, the galaxy and space. There are real pictures and video of the sun, moon and others while they are supplemented with toys, graphics and music that go along with the sky/space theme.
I am an early childhood educator, and I see these videos as being some of the most developmentally appropriate videos out there for children to watch. The video expresses many subjects, textures, colors and most of all, beautiful classical music to soothe your child and spark their interest and attention. I'm not quite sure why these videos haven't worked for other parents, but they've been successful in my family and many others that I know. I highly recommend the Baby Einstein collection- at least try them, especially Baby Galileo.

Baby Einstein - Baby Van Gogh - World of Colors (2002) Review

Baby Einstein - Baby Van Gogh - World of Colors (2002)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We have all of the video products of the Baby Einstein Company. This video is more similar in format to Baby Shakespeare than the Baby Mozart / Baby Bach videos. Nevertheless, I would say that Baby Van Gogh is a better attention-getter and -holder than Baby Shakespeare. The visuals are much more professional and entertaining - the main content being color and art, as opposed to poetry readings.
If you are new to the Baby Einstein Company's products, I highly recommend them over the products of the competing companies (we have a VERY extensive childern's video library). The live-action visuals are far more engaging to infants and toddlers than the computer graphics and animation of other videos. In this respect (visually), Baby Van Gogh is even more dynamic than some of the earlier Baby Einstein productions - and certainly has a bit higher production quality. For babies under 6 months, however, I would recommend Baby Mozart as the best 'starter' in the series.
As with Baby Mozart, Baby Bach and Baby Einstein, my daughter (now almost nine months) cannot get enough of this video.

We used the baby Bach and baby Mozart videos when our 7 month old was younger and she loves them, but Neighborhood Animals is her all time favorite. She sits in her walker and watches the animals and even tries to talk to them. She gets excited when the pupets/animals make sounds and loves the music. She smiles and starts making her little baby sounds everytime she see Pavlov the dog. We used to put her in her swing and let her watch Bach or Mozart while we get ready for work in the A.M. But with this video she got so excited in the swing that we had to put her on the floor or in her walker! Even though the age recommendations are 1 yr to 4 yr I highly recommend it for younger babies. I took the video over to the sitters and she said all the kids liked it and watched intently. (the ages are 8mth, 7mth, 5mth and 2 years!) I'm not a big fan of sitting my daughter in front of the TV; however, when both parents work and you need to buy a little time in the morning this is the greatest! I hope your children love it as much as my daughter does!

would do what they did. Disney went and tried to make the videos better. Lots of animation, loud music and fast moving things. They did keep some of the old (simple) concept but they added to it and made it more like most other kids videos. It was so peaceful to watch the old ones. I have all of the other Baby Einstein videos and love them and both of my kids love them. I bought this one because of the reputation of the original company. Now, that Disney owns them I guess I'll be thinking twice before I buy the next one that comes out. I was wondering if they would try to improve on something that worked so well just like it was. There are also no children in this video and the puppets are limited. These were my daughter's favorite things in the other videos. It certainly isn't a bad video but it's just not as good as the others. So, if you really liked the others you might be disappointed in this one also. And, to be fair, my daughter asked to watch it a second time right after watching it so it can't be all bad.

Orangutan Island - Season 1 (2008)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I love monkeys and apes, I'll be the first to admit. But bias aside, this is, I think, one of the BEST shows that was on TV. And the whole family can enjoy it!
Orangutans, one of our closest living relatives, are critically endangered. Deforestation and poaching are bringing their numbers dangerously close to a point of no return. When a parent dies, usually the young orangutan would follow shortly after. However, the classmates of Nyaru Mentang have been rescued and are raised by humans in hopes of releasing them into the wild. This is a long process, as the dependency period of a baby orang on it's mother is the longest in the mammalian family, aside from humans.
The show is always good for a laugh, and I find it always makes me smile, no matter my mood going into it. Most of it is pretty happy, though there are sad parts of the episodes, and some of the stories about the orangutans are heartbreaking. Take Bonita for instance - poachers shot her mother out of a tree, and she clung to her mother's hair on the way down. After mother and child hit the ground, the poachers came and literally ripped her away from her dead mother, most likely to be sold into a life of solitary confinement in a cramped cage.
Within a couple episodes you'll get to know the orangutans, and learn to appreciate and understand their complex social structure, and their quirks. Each is very distinctive and has a readily discernible personality.
Watching them, one can't help but feel like you are looking at people. They think, they plan, they ponder, they trick, they scheme, they cry, they laugh, they love (two romances start up during season 1!!). These intelligent and gentle creatures will easily capture your heart, and you'll find that each episode ends much too quickly.
