Empire of the Nude is an episode of the BBC series "Omnibus", produced to accompany the recent exhibition and book "Exposed: the Victorian Nude." The film explores the history of the nude in 19th-century British art and its connection to visions of Empire. It also makes clear that the Victorian era, despite its reputation for repression, was a time of freedom and exploration of sexuality, art, and the body.

Though today the Victorian era is considered extremely prudish, theartists of that period created a tradition of the nude in British art, drawing upon Greek andRoman classicism to affirm Britain's superiority at a time of skyrocketing pornographyand prostitution. This fascinating insight into the art, mores and psyche of a bygone ageincludes a wide variety of images from painting, photography and film, including worksby such noted artists as William Etty, Lord Leighton and George Frederic Watts.
