Whenever one of these young superstars comes shooting to the skies almost from one day to the next, one must inevitably ask oneself whether it's just all hype, or they are actually worth the fuzz. I have myself had a casual acquiantance with Justin Timberlake's music for the last couple of years - after all, anybody who does watch MTV just once every year will have stumbled into hits like Rock Your Body, Cry Me A River, Sexyback or What Goes Around (Comes Around) - and so, when Justin stopped by Copenhagen this year, to play for a whooping 54.000 people, I decided to give it a try, just to see what it was all about. And I must admit that back then, I was quite blown away. Not that everything was perfect on that occasion, but he just delivered a show that left no doubt that this was a power to reckon with, in showbiz and in music.
Therefore, when this DVD was announced, I decided to give it ago - to relive what was a great night of fun and music, and to see whether it could stand the test of return to subject. And I must say that overall, this does stand very well the test of time, at least so far. Again, it's not perfect, but it's pretty damn good, and more important, it's a very honest release.
The DVD opens with an interview section with Justin and band, which seagues into opening sequence and title track FutureSex/LoveSounds off latest CD - which also happened to be one of the strongest moments on the CD, and I must say that here perhaps the show falls slightly flat. I will emphasize and give credit to the fact that the songs are not just reproductions of the album tracks, they are fully interpreted in terms of being played live, and this quite stripped down version of the track perhaps falls somewhat short on the vocal part. I would like more presence of Timberlake in the song - large parts are delivered only by the multi-member back-up team, which is a bit of a shame. The same is true for second cut Like I Love You, and although both performances have all the groove one would expect of cuts as solid as these, the DVD does not come off on the best footing in my oppinion.
From third cut, My Love, Justin starts to step more into character, but I'll say his voice really starts to shine from Señorita and Sexy Ladies and onwards. It is evident that Timberlake doesn't have the strongest voice in the bussiness - one could argue that his voice is capable, but nothing more than that - but I will say that he does get the best of what he has got, which is sometimes as important as being talented when it comes down to showmanship. The vocal arrangement leans heavily on the backing section, but Timberlake does more than just lip-synch, and I appreciate the fact that whenever he sings, he sings genuinely live, and once he's started does that better than what I would have expected - and he certainly proves that his smooth falsetto is not just a studio-infused feature. Also one should add that he does a lot of movement on stage - dancing, and running (more about this later!), which naturally takes focus away from the vocal - not necessarily a good trade-off in my oppinion, but I guess that's part of the show, take it or leave it.
The tempo is decreased with the unset of ballad Until The End Of The World from the resent album - not my favorite cut of the record, but Justin does a blistering performance here, which is probably why this track has also been released as live video to promote the DVD release on music TV stations. Next up, however, is major smash hit What Goes Around (Comes Around), which clocks in at a whooping 10 minutes and is one of the absolute highlights of the concert. This is one of the great examples of how they rework the songs in the live setting: The song opens with a beautiful piano intro (the man himself at work here), and I must emphasize here the great sound on this release, which retains the full dynamic range of the music as it was played: The piano section opens quietly, and then halfway through drums, keyboard and guitar sets in to form a roaring crescendo. Amazing, and the song has not even kicked in yet. The song proper is pretty faithful to the album version, which is not a bad thing at all, but also adds a much rougher edge with more dominant guitars, and I must admit that this particular track really wow's me. The final cut before the intermission is the funky Chop Me Up, where Justin is joined on stage by name-sake Timbaland, producer, songwriter et al.
Blissfully cut out from this feature is the overly long and self-indulgant Timbaland-tribute-DJ-section featured in the interlude. This was both overly long and bordering on embarrasing, so I whole-heartedly support its omision. Instead we get a short interview with the two Timbers, before going into the opener of second set, Rock Your Body. I should mention here ther generally very well-structured set, which is a deffinite pro of this concert: Ballance is very well retained between old hits, new hits, and new unknown tracks, and the music flows very well, sometimes uninterrupted, from one track to the next.
The major weakness of this tour, however, is also displayed in this next part: With only two albums in his catalogue, Timberlake has only a limited number of songs to pick between, the next handful of tracks therefore moves far into what I consider banalities: The acoustic medley featuring a couple of N-Sync songs (Gone, Take It From Here, Last Night) is downright boring, whereas the dull Damn Girl from the new album is presented in an overly long version, complete with semi-naked girls which does nothing for Timberlakes musical credibility.
Things turn better, however, with the groovy ballad Summer Love and the almost gospel-like Losing My Way - one of my odd favorites from the recent album, here delivered as a sing-along over playback choir which I think is a wise choice, as the gospel singers form an important back-droping to Justin's fragile voice here. Speaking of back-droppings, I should also mention the ingenious scene-design here: Scene is placed in-the-round, i.e. audience is all around the stage. To solve this problem, semi-transparent fabrics are lowered at different parts around the stage, and works at the same time as giant screens for those who cannot see the man (because of distance, or simply because he's on the other side of stage!) and at the same time as emphasize of the light show. In this particular track, Justin is surrounded on all sides by images of the gospel singers, thus hiding him almost completely from the audience, and vice-versa, making a nice reference to the song catch line "Is anybody out there?". I should also say that Justin does an admirable job in moving around the stage, getting out to all parts of the audience, something which is not a small feat in a venue of this size with a 4-sided stage.
The final part of the set consist of a safe pick of major hits, and nothing to complain about here: Firstly, a surprisingly gritty delivery of Cry Me A River (no mention of Britney here!), this seagues into the funky Lovestoned / I Think That She Knows, which again seagues into a surprisingly gritty, at times almost sonically dirty version of Sexyback. Again I must compliment the man for his courage to rework his own songs, even if they are still true to the album versions, the live versions deffinitely has a character of their own, making this release worth having not only for the visiuals. Indeed, I'm somewhat surprised the package does not come with a CD with selected cuts, like similar releases from other artist (I will take the liberty to recommend Kylie's Fever Tour CD/DVD release and Madonna's Confessions Tour CD/DVD releases, both excellent releases).
A bit surprising for me, when I saw the show in Copenhagen, was the choice for encore, (Another Song) All Over Again. This song never did much for me on the album, but the intimate setting here, with Justin sitting alone at the piano, was amazingly strong, forming a nice contrast to the loud inferno of Sexyback. And the boy sings his heart out here! Since the concert here, this songs stands especially strong for me, and I must say it's a surprise highlight of the DVD, and brings the concert to a worthy conclusion.OVERALL RATING 8/10
Final Comments:
Considering that the man only has two CDs in his bag, this offers both a very satisfactory overview of his career and a surprisingly robust selection of tracks - even though some of them could have been left out, had one had more material to pick from (Sexy Ladies, Damn Girl, and the acoustic medley comes to mind).
Technically, this is a pleasing release. Sound is perfect, and picture is great - and the editing is not too jumpy, as is often the case in concert movies. I could have gone without the cut-ins of interview snippets or comments a couple of places, but overall nothing really compromising.
On the bottom line, I must say that with this, Justin seems to emphasize that he is indeed a name to be taken seriously in the music bussiness. He might not be the worlds best singer, but as an entertainer, he's on the top.

this is a great story as ESPN cameras follow the streetballers from city to city....I like the stories about the guys where they started and grew up playing streetball...the game in NYC was like a 'real game' - the and1 players were serious cause they knew the ball players there you couldn't do so many tricks cause they were coming at em....same with oakland's open run....
alimoe talks about being recruited by tarkanian and fresno state, headache talks about the original 5 and1 players with footage from the original video of highlights, hot sauce comes off as the crowd favorite everywhere they go...some good video of ao...as well....its a good dvd
the full entire game played in atlanta is on 2nd disc and its fun to watch the one and only skip to my lou in action...
bottom line if you're interested in seeing real ball players who love the game and play for the competition and thrill of the game - watch these guys and support and1 basketball...yeah its streetball and its not about fundamentals or team basketball but its about players who play in the playgrounds and would play even if they never made a dime doing it....for the love of the game...

The Allman Brothers Band - Live at the Beacon Theatre (2003) Review

The Allman Brothers Band - Live at the Beacon Theatre (2003)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
An excellent live concert release from one of the original jam bands. Here The Allman Brothers Band present an uncut 2 Hour and 48 minute concert recorded in March 2003 at The Beacon Theater in New York. Although a few Allman Brothers classics like Ramblin Man, Jessica, In Memory of Elizabeth Reed, and Revival are not here they are included on other video releases and what is included here is excellent and worthy of 5 stars. The 5.1 sound and video quality are excellent and the band is as tight as they have ever been. This version of the Allman Brothers Band (Founding members Gregg Allman, Jaimoe, and Butch Trucks, along with longtime band members Warren Haynes, Marc Quinones, and Oteil Burbridge, and more recent addition Derek Trucks doing a good job filling Dickie Betts' shoes) seem to be really enjoying themselves on stage and it comes through in the quality of the music.
Besides the concert, the double DVD release also includes approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes of interviews and behind the scenes footage. There is a also a very good dressing room performance of Old Friend by Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks along with a photo gallery and discography.
Here is the Track Listing:
1. Ain't Wastin' Time No More
2. Black Hearted Woman
3. Statesboro Blues
4. Woman Across The River
5. A Change Is Gonna Come
6. Maydell
7. Come & Go Blues
8. Rockin' Horse
9. Desdemona
10. Don't Keep Me Wondering
11. Midnight Rider
12. Soulshine
13. High Cost Of Low Living
14. Leave My Blues At Home
15. Old Before My Time
16. The Same Thing
17. Melissa
18. Instrumental Illness
19. Worried Down With The Blues
20. Dreams

This is an amazing DVD worth getting by all means. First off I'll get the only bad thing about this out of the way so the I can get to all the greatness. Besides the show there aren't a lot of extra bonus features. Some band/fan interviews and galleries. But that's not even really a complaint, just the letting you know part. And now to the greatness, The performance. First off they give you 3 audio options. Stereo, 5.1 Surround, and DTS. Also the chain has been broken of them playing older tunes which really makes this DVD special as it has some of the older tunes sounding even better than they did on the original cd. It's only a 9 song set but if you're familiar with Opeth you know why that is and it is a great set. Under the Weeping Moon and Night and the Silent Water have never sounded better. The picture is so clean it looks almost hi def. Also this might be the best mixed DVD I've ever heard. No instrument is too low or too loud. It's simply perfect, as is the performance by the band. Every song is played flawlessly and it's good fairwell to Peter Lindgren who will be missed even though his replacement is great also. Anyways, fans and any fan of great metal should pick this up. This is an amazing band and an amazing performance. While Lamentations was a great DVD this one edges it out due to a better setlist and amazing visual and audio quality. Highly recommended.

Since their formation in 1990, Opeth has risen to the forefront of the metal world; bringing many aspects of progressive Rock/Metal to a whole new audience by combining soft acoustic ambience with complex, melodic & heavy guitars, perfectly concocted into a completely peerless sound. This 2 DVD set contains a captivating Opeth performance from the Camden Roundhouse, London in 2006. It shows the band in scintillating form playing a selection of classics from their illustrious career. The Roundhouse Tapes was filmed during the band's Ghost Reveries tour.

Yu-Gi-Oh - The Complete First Season (2001) Review

Yu-Gi-Oh - The Complete First Season (2001)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As you might have gleaned from other reviews on this page, there are in fact two completely different products that present the first season of Yu-Gi-Oh:
1) Yu-Gi-Oh: The Complete First Season (henceforth called TCFS)
2) Yu-Gi-Oh: The Perfect Collection (henceforth called TPC)
What's the difference? Well, several things.
1) TCFS is listed on Amazon, TPC is not.
2) TPC is the original, uncut episodes, dubbed by a foreign distributor. TCFS is an edited set, put out by 4Kids Entertainment in the US, with some violence and language removed, and also has different voices than TPC's dub. You can see several reviews here complaining about the scenes cut out in TCFS. The reason why this was done is that TCFS is a Kid's version, TPC is the original adult version.
3) Most importantly, TCFS, for one reason or another, retails for about $40 more than TPC.
Now, most people would normally love to have uncut episodes of a show over cut ones. And if the uncut episodes are less expensive, it should be a no-brainer. UNLESS you're buying it for a Kid. If you're buying for a kid, you may want, and be willing to pay more for an edited version. And in any case, the kid is going to want the version that has the voices that he's heard on TV. He's not going to get why everybody sounds different.
Whichever version you want, these are the facts. There *are* two different versions, they are not quite the same, and their prices are very different. And this is where the potential for abuse comes in.
(...)
If you should see an ad like that, and be thinking about buying, check the fine print first, and look to see if it contains the words "International Version". If it has those words, then the seller is going to substitute TPC for TCFS, (despite the fact that TCFS is the product being listed), and try to claim that they're really the same thing (despite having different titles). What is a fantastic price for TCFS is not all that great a price for TPC. You could do better elsewhere. But be that as it may, just be aware, that if you place such an order for TCFS, TPC is what you're going to get. If that's what you wanted, fine. But if you deliberately ordered the Kid's version because you WANTED the kid's version, be aware that you're not going to get it, despite what it says on your receipt.

Firefighter George & Fire Engines, Fire Trucks, and Fire Safety, Volume 1 (2005) Review

Firefighter George and Fire Engines, Fire Trucks, and Fire Safety, Volume 1 (2005)
Average Reviews:

My preschooler has several videos about firefighting. Most of them include at least one of the following: irritating slapstick humor, talking dogs, goofy kids, horrible songs, a miscast actor claiming to be a fireman, or a ridiculous storyline that distracts youngsters from whatever factoids about the subject are being thrown at them.
"Firefigher George" is not like this at all. This video is like a really successful field trip to a fire station. In it enthusiatic adults explain how a pumper engine works and go over the basics of fire saftey. Believe me, that's enough to keep your junior firefighter enthralled. What the makers of other videos don't seem to realize is that firefighting is interesting enough: all the jokes, etc. are not needed. I think "Firefighter George" was produced by people who know a bit about primary education. The information in the video is presented in a coherent, accessible way and the visual aid on the video box really gets my son and nephews involved in the experience. Adults will learn a lot too. Yes, you can watch this one with the kids and not cringe. I hope to see videos on other subjects by this company.

Ramones - Raw (2004) Review

Ramones - Raw (2004)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Before I put Ramones Raw in the DVD player I thought it might seem bittersweet to watch, what with three of the band members now deceased. But instead of making me feel sad, the footage only made me happy that the world ever got to experience this thing called Ramones in the first place.
The DVD contains five hours' worth of footage, including concert footage from 1980 to 1996, clips of television appearances (Howard Stern and Uncle Floyd), their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and "I, Ramones," a concert shot in Italy.
With exception to concert footage, most of what we see was shot by Marky Ramone on his Super 8 camera. Apparently Marky was determined to capture life on the road for the band and it is his behind-the-scenes footage that makes this DVD worthwhile. The title is appropriate as some of what you see is indeed raw, and it gets a bit confusing at times because things aren't in chronological order.
Some of the more interesting footage includes the band's van being mobbed by screaming and fanatical fans much like the Beatles in "A Hard Day's Night," and Johnny sarcastically giving tour manager Monte Melnick a hard time anytime things get chaotic: "Really well organized, Monte. Nice job." Not.
We also get to see the usually stoic Johnny actually laugh and joke as well as sobering evidence of Dee Dee's physical and mental decline from drug use as we see clips of a youthful and vibrant Dee Dee and a hardened and somewhat narcissistic one. There are also lots of shots of the boys sitting on the toilet, which they themselves find hilarious.
Joey appears to be an easy-going, laid back guy who gets along well with everyone. But the footage suggests, as has been reported since Johnny's death, that he and Johnny did not get along very well after Johnny stole his girlfriend. We don't see the two fight or bicker. Instead, they simply and quietly avoid each other.
Diehard fans of Joey, Johnny, Marky and Dee Dee won't be disappointed with this one. It's a lively snapshot into the life of four ordinary guys whose impact on music was anything but ordinary.

The Electric Company's Greatest Hits & Bits (2006) Review

The Electric Company's Greatest Hits and Bits (2006)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First shown on PBS, "The Electric Company's Greatest Hits and Bits" is a fun look back at the 1970's TV Show. It consists of several clips from the show as well as interviews with cast members Skip Hinnant, Jim Boyd, Rita Moreno and Judy Graubart as well as contributors to the show Joan Rivers and Tom Lehrer. There is also an interview with Joan Ganz Cooney who helped create the show. The special features include deleted interviews with the cast members and an audio review with Tom Lehrer.
For the most part, "The Electric Company's Greatest Hits and Bits" is an enjoyable documentary. At the time it debuted in October 1971 it was a groundbreaking show with a fully integrated cast teaching children how to read using comedy and music. It's always fun to watch a show as an adult that you loved as a kid and catch some of the references you missed back then. Easy Reader was of course based on Easy Rider but it was interesting to hear Skip Hinnant say that he stole largely from "Get Smart" when doing Fargo North, Decoder; Jim Boyd saying J. Arthur Crank was based on Ralph Cramden; and Rita Moreno saying "Hey you guys" came from Abbott and Costello. There are plenty of clips from the show including animated ones such as "The Adventures of Letterman" and several based on Tom Lehrer's delightful songs including "Silent E" and "-ly". The live action skits include "I'm in love with a giant" and "The Super is eating his supper" which is fun to watch just to see the cast trying to keep a straight face as water pours down on them.
Since this is a documentary and not full episodes of "The Electric Company" adults will probably enjoy this DVD more than children. It does have quite a bit of praise for Morgan Freeman, currently the most famous of the then unknown actors, but it stops just short of going overboard on the praise. While it was nice to see Hinnant, Boyd, and Graubart, I hope other actors from the show such as Luis Avalos, Hattie Winston, and Lee Chamberlain show up in interviews on future DVDs. For some reason the show focuses solely on the adult members of the cast, with no mention at all of the Short Circus and the child actors, a bit surprising since Irene Cara was a member of the Short Circus for awhile.
"The Electric Company's Greatest Bits and Hits" is good nostalgic fun.

When The Electric Company made its television debut in October1971, it was instantly clear that it would fulfill its mission of helpingstruggling and reluctant readers. This is awesome. This is what we Buddy Rich fans want, it is right there with the best.
Very interesting features also. It leaves me dying to get the Buddy Rich Show DVD when that comes out. That will have Buddy with the best- Mel Torme, Ray Charles, Lionel Hampton, Stan Getz, and more.
Where has this been all our lives? It should have been out in 1982.
Good things come to those who wait.
This is a must have for Buddy fans.

In 1982, Buddy Rich filmed three shows over three days at the Statler Hotel in New York. They were never aired--in fact, never edited. This DVD, Buddy Rich Up Close, is a special edit of The Buddy Rich Show. It spotlights six songs: Love For Sale, Bugle Call Rag, West Side Story, Birdland, Greensleeves, and Dancing Men--with as many cameras as possible focusing on Buddy and his incredible drumming technique. Included are the show's main edit plus three different versions of audio (drums hot and band hot) as well as a slow motion version. Running time is 116 mins.

I loved Nicole Sullivan in MAD TV and she made a perfect transition to "Rita Rocks". With my schedule (like Rita's, evidently), I didn't get to see all of the episodes, so I'm looking forward to watching the whole shebang again on the DVD set. Though sometimes predictable (like most sitcoms), the acting is never pretentious and everyone is a pleasure to watch. A great series to unwind with at the end of the day!

Nicole Sullivan ( MADtv ) stars as Rita Clemens, an overworked wife, mother, and former lead singer of a Bangles cover band who has traded in a life of jam sessions and rock clubs for carpools and PTA meetings. On the verge of a full-blown identity crisis, Rita struggles to maintain romance with her husband, Jay (Richard Ruccolo, Two Guys and a Girl ), juggle the demands of her 9-year-old daughter, Shannon (Kelly Gould, Lucky Louie ), and discipline her defiant teenage daughter, Hallie (Natalie Dreyfuss, He s Just Not That Into You ) and her ever-present boyfriend, Kip (Raviv Ullman, Phil of the Future ). In an attempt to reconnect with her youth and with the hopes of putting some spark back in her life, Rita dusts off her guitar and forms a garage band with Kip, her nosy postal carrier Patty (Tisha Campbell-Martin, My Wife and Kids, Martin ) and her unemployed neighbor Owen (Ian Gomez). RITA ROCKS: THE COMPLETE SEASON 1 features all 20 episodes plus extras jam-packed onto 3 discs!

Of all the bio's or rememberance documentaries done on an artist, I have to say this was the best of all that I've seen! It was very insightful covering what inspired John to write certain songs, what was happening in his life during the times he was writing them, and gave a well rounded perspective of his life and career taken from his own narratives as well as those who knew him personally or worked with him through the years. A definite "Must have" for any John Denver fan!!!

Grand Ole Opry at Carnegie Hall (2006) Review

Grand Ole Opry at Carnegie Hall (2006)

This DVD features the show held in Nov.,2005. Many major talents are represented here, like veterans Jimmy Dickens and Bill Anderson to newer stars like Brad Paisley and Trace Adkins. Great songs such as Ricky Scaggs' "Black Eyed Suzie" and Trisha Yearwood on "She's In Love With The Boy" and many other popular favorites from such artists as Vince Gill, Charley Pride, Martina McBride and Alan Jackson. The shining gem of the evening though, is Alison Krauss & Union Station's performance of the Patsy Cline tune "She's Got You". Alison's crystal clear voice will give you chills.
This show was well produced and recorded, it's a keeper!

Santana - Live by Request (2005) Review

Santana - Live by Request (2005)

I'm a big Santana fan, and bought this DVD with a Dolby Digital insignia on the back of the label at Best Buy, expecting that the format was DD 5.1, and why shouldn't it be?
But once I got it open and in the DVD player I discovered that the format was - PCM ONLY! There is no "setup" option in the menu and no audio format choice - NO DD period.
Companies like Sony/Arista spend millions on PR combatting piracy. But piracy works both ways - in this case Arista (Sony) took my money and fraudulently fobbed-off this poorly produced product.

This is 2006 and to produce a music DVD that is "PCM only" is nothing short of idiotic.
Don't buy this video expecting that the producers have made any effort to give you value for your money, because they haven't.
Aren't these guys ever accountable?
This shortchanging of consumers is becoming all too common. For instance,"The Island" was distributed in Canada with DD5.1 in french, but only DD2.1 in english.
Even after the mistake came to light and buyers realized they had been fleeced, the producers made their customers go through all kinds of hoops to obtain the correct DD5.1 english copy.
The distributors even refused to replace copies, that were sold to video stores, with the "authentic"DD5.1 version, seemingly willing to commit fraud with every rental.

Cake (2005) Review

Cake (2005)

Phillippa "Pippa" McGee (Heather Graham) returns home to attend yet another wedding, and begins to wonder if all of her once boldly independent girlfriends will succumb to the comforts of coupledom. She's satisfied to know that her best friend Lulu (played deliciously by Sandra Oh) is still a cohort in their Sex-in-the-City type antics. Then Pippa's father has a heart attack, and Pippa helps by taking over as editor for one of his magazines: Wedding Bells.
Pippa brings her personality to the job, and asks her confused new employees to push the status quo. Cheryl Hines and Bruce Gray play two of these characters -- and they are soooo funny. Also tied to this temporary new job is Ian Gray (played by David Sutcliffe), her father's uptight (and charming and handsome) VP. Ian doesn't want Pippa to destroy her ailing father's magazine, so he tries to rein in some of her crazier ideas. Of course the two butt heads.
And the two share an amazing chemistry.
I smile all the way through this movie, every time. If you like light-hearted romantic comedy, this DVD is well worth the cost.
