Top notch production featuring excellent writing, performances, cinematography, action etc. The gold box special at 60 bucks for both seasons 1 and 2, is a steal considering other sites are selling this set in excess of twice that. Lots of worthwhile extras. And to all those fans complaining about the initial high price.., Blame HBO for overpricing their stuff, not Amazon.com. Grab this set before the price goes back up.

Nine Inch Nails - Live - Beside You in Time (2007) Review

(More customer reviews)"Beside You in Time" is a live DVD compiling performances from the 2005-06 "With Teeth" arena shows. The performances showcase the current visceral Nine Inch Nails lineup, mostly focusing on the energy of the band members rather than effects and stage theatrics - this is a contrast from the "And All that Could have Been" DVD that chronicled 2001's Fragility tour. The addition of Aaron North on guitar and Josh Freese on drums make this the most immediately gratifying NIN lineup ever, i.e. most of the sounds that you hear are actually being generated by the five men on stage. North in particular puts on a one-man show of hyperactive fury while never losing his touch with the guitar duties. The DVD presentation purposefully adds very little to the performance, opting to let the intensity speak for itself. It's a very worthwhile chronicle of a Nine Inch Nails tour that was both familiar and also subtly unique.
PERFORMANCE - 5 stars
Reznor's voice immediately stands out as much improved over the Fragility tour; his newfound sobriety suits the performances very well. He holds sway over the crowd on both high-energy classics like "Wish" and "Gave Up" as well as heart-rending ballads such as "Hurt" and "Right Where It Belongs".
The backing band is arguably the strongest to ever bear the Nine Inch Nails name, primarily due to the addition of Aaron North on guitar. North struts, jumps, flails and kicks while never losing a single note of his licks. Jeordie White manages to finally make the bass line heard in a NIN live show, something that his predecessors never could do. Alessandro Cortini is a bit of a step down from Charlie Clouser; he quietly manages the samples and sequences while sometimes letting entire synth lines go unheard ("Only"). Josh Freese plays drums like he'd recorded the studio tracks himself, even though he was a mid-tour replacement. He displays a comfortable confidence with the material that allows him to put his own mark on the show with some unique fills.
The setlist is a great mix of new and old tracks, and even the oft-played ones get new treatment. For instance, "Closer" is mashed up with "The Only Time" to great effect. The middle portion of the show performed behind a projection curtain is mesmerizing; the visuals add a real haunting relevance to "Eraser" and "Right Where It Belongs" in particular. VIDEO - 5 stars
A word of caution - the picture is 5 stars provided that you take the time to use the "video optimizer" special feature. Otherwise, it will likely alternate between looking too dark and too washed out. Once set up for your TV's settings, the result is startlingly real, even in the standard-definition DVD format.
As was the case with "And All that Could have Been", there was an emphasis on cameras not interfering with the actualy shows. So, there aren't a whole lot of close-ups to enjoy. But overall, the camera work is solid in a documentary style.
One minor gripe is that each song is titled on-screen, which seems unnecessary for most fans and makes the production look a bit "made for TV".
AUDIO - 5 stars
The disc offers both a 5.1 and a DTS mix. Both sound very good, with fine separation. The mix of the performance itself is terrific, often distinguishing each performer's contribution to the sound even in the most chaotic passages ("You Know What You Are?").
EXTRAS - 4 stars
There are several tracks from the 2006 Summer amphitheatre tour, including ones that were specific to that leg, e.g. "Somewhat Damaged" and "Non-Entity". These performances were obviously relegated to the "Special Features" section because of the stage layout of that outdoor tour: the band performs sections of the show behind a metal fence/curtain that lights up. The effect is like a projected curtain from a distance, but shot from the close-up cameras, it simply looks like the band is obscured by scaffolding. The songs provided are:

03. help me i am in hell
04. non-entity
05. only
The real treat here is the tour rehearsal footage. There are three tracks ("Love is Not Enough", "Every Day is Exactly the Same", and the elusive "The Collector") performed by the band in a warehouse in the round and the resulting footage is great. It looks to be the same setup used for the video for "The Hand That Feeds", including the final chapter of Jerome Dillon on drums.
Finally, the videos for "The Hand that Feeds" and "Only" (a clever piece by David Fincher) are included as well.
CONCLUSION
This is a must-have for any Nine Inch Nails fan. It's also a great introduction to the band for anyone interested in their future direction. The "With Teeth" material is perfectly suited to this lineup and the resulting show is definitely worthy of being chronicled. The picture and sound are very good and the extras just add more substance to the complete package.

The cell has definitely shorten and ended not only susperstars's careers but also referees and managers. This 3 disc set shows you the best remembered Hell in the Cell Matches over the past 10 years of it's exsistence. If you have seen the Ladder Match DVD set then you will really love this set as well. This set is just as good as the Ladder Match 3 disc set is.
Mick Foley hosts the presentation and he starts off the program by giving a brief back story on why and how the Hell in a Cell Match came to be. The Hell In A Cell Matches that are not included in this set are Undertaker Vs. Big Bossman from Wrestlemania XV, Kennel in a Cell Match: Al Snow Vs. Big Bossman from Unforgiven 1999, & Undertaker Vs. Edge from SummerSlam 2008.
Bad Blood (October 5, 1997)
Undertaker Vs. European Champion Shawn Michaels - In the HIAC's debut match, Michaels and Undertaker sets the bar for future HIAC matches to come. Undertaker just really dominates HBK for mostly all the match. Once the two made their way out of the cell, Undertaker and Michaels would just fight each other around and on top of the cell. Michaels soon falls from the side of the cage & through the announce table after trying to escape from the Underaker. After Kane makes his debut and Tombstones the Undertaker, HBK becomes victorious in the first Hell In A Cell Match. This match is something to see if already haven't. 5/5
Raw (June 15, 1998)
Kane & Mankind w/ Paul Bearer Vs. WWE Champion Stone Cold Steve Austin & Undertaker - This was more of a segment than anything else. Stone Cold leads Mankind and Kane outside the cell to leave the Undertaker and Paul Bearer all alone inside the locked structure. Inside the locked structure, Undertaker just beats the holy hell out of a bloody Paul Bearer while leaving Stone Cold fighting Kane and Mankind on the outside. Kane trys to climb the cell to get in before Austin meets him up there. They do not show us the after math once Raw went off the air and it aint really worth rating.
King Of The Ring (June 28, 1998)
Undertaker Vs. Mankind - This is probably the most known and memorable Hell in a Cell match of all-time and mainly because of Mankind being thrown off the cell. After being chokeslammed and thrown off the cell, Mankind and Undertaker delivers a pretty brutal match. Thumb tacks, steel steps, and chairs all gets involved. After being chokslammed onto thumb tacks, Undertaker Tombstones Mankind to pick up his first ever Hell In A Cell victory. Foley certainly gets a well deserved standing ovation after the match. 5/5
Raw (August 24, 1998)
Mankind Vs. Kane - Just like the match from King Of The Ring, Kane and Mankind starts this match off on the outside where Foley gets beaten up by both Kane and the Undertaker and also falls from the cell through the announce table. Kane and Mankind both takes some hard chair shots to the head. Thumb tacks also gets brought into this match. After Stone Cold Steve Austin interferes from under the ring, the match gets stopped. A match that's worth a watch. 4/5
No Way Out (February 27, 2000)
WWE Champion Triple H Vs. Cactus Jack - Not only was this match for HHH's WWE Title but Mick Foley's career was also in jeopardy if Mick Foley lost this match. The match itself was just as brutal and punishable as Foley's & HHH's Street Fight was from the Royal Rumble a month earlier. After Foley and the Game got out of the cell, the match would only get more violent around and on top of the cell. After once again falling from the cell and through the announce table, Foley brings out his famous barbed wire 2x4 and sets it on fire. After setting the 2x4 on fire, Foley gets backdropped through the cell and crashes through the ring followed by a Pedigree from HHH. Just like from the KOTR, Mick Foley gets a well deserved ovation after the match. And for the trivia buffs out there this is the first Hell in a Cell match where a WWE Title was defended in. 5/5
Armageddon (December 20, 2000)
Stone Cold Steve Austin Vs. WWE Champion Kurt Angle Vs. Triple H Vs. The Rock Vs. Rikishi Vs. The Undertaker - This has to be the wildest, craziest, & most action packed HIAC match of all time. There is action everywhere in this match. McMahon comes out and frees everybody from the cell and then all hell breaks loose everywhere. We even see a Wrestlemania X-Seven preview from Austin and the Rock. This was just a huge and tremendous match. Awesome Hell in a Cell match. 5/5
Judgment Day (May 19, 2002)
Triple H Vs. Chris Jericho - HHH and Jericho by far made up for their lousy match they had at Wrestlemania X8. Jericho takes one of the most brutal beatings ever inside a Hell in the Cell Match. Jericho tried to be tough but I think the cell got to him in this match. A ladder gets briefly used along with a steel chair, ring steps, & a sledgehammer. After being let loose, Triple H & Jericho battles all around the cell and soon make their way on top where HHH brings up with him a barbed wire 2x4. The match ends on top of the cell after Jericho gets Pedigreed by HHH. Watch out for Tim White getting up close and personal to the cell. 4.5/5
No Mercy (October 20, 2002)
WWE Champion Brock Lesnar Vs. Undertaker - Get ready to see a bloodbath because that is exactly what this HIAC Match is. Undertaker & Brock Lesnar shows everybody how violent & sedistic a Hell in the Cell Match can be. Just as brutal and sedistic fighting only inside the cell and not out. Undertaker bleed buckets in this match. Lesnar & Undertaker both uses the cell and other things around them very effectively on each other. Possibably the best Hell In A Cell Match in history. 5/5
Bad Blood (June 15, 2003)
Kevin Nash Vs. World Heavyweight Champion Triple H - Kevin Nash wasn't really getting over with the fans as WWE thought he would so they brought in Mick Foley to be the Special Guest Referee for this HIAC match. This isn't as bad as people say it is. I felt this HIAC is very violent and brutal. All men bleeds in this one including Foley. Not the best Hell in a Cell Match but definitely not the worst. 4/5
Bad Blood (June 13, 2004)
Triple H Vs. Shawn Michaels - You better get ready to take a deep seat because Michaels and HHH tears each other to shreds for nearly one hour in the sedistic Hell In a Cell. HBK and HHH both takes a lot of punishment and a bloody beating from each other. This was a fantastic way to end this feud. Arguably the best Hell in a Cell match ever. This match was just off the charts. 5/5
Vengeance (June 26, 2005)
World Heavyweight Champion Batista Vs. Triple H - HHH and Batista told anincredible story here in this HIAC match. HHH is a guy that brings out the best in Batista and HHH did an fantastic job here in doing so. Everything you expect in a Hell in the Cell match and more takes place. Batista gets very physical in this match. He uses everything HHH brings out against him and more. This is a sedistic match where HHH has to take time off from afterwards. This HIAC match could also be the best ever. 5/5
Armageddon (December 18, 2005)
Undertaker Vs. Randy Orton - Other reviewers point out that this HIAC match resembles more of a No Holds Barred than a true Hell in the Cell Match but I disagree with that. Undertaker and Orton provided the fans a sedistic and a very harsh match to watch. A lot of physicality is apart of this HIAC match. Orton pulls off some impressive counters to the Undertaker. Orton also takes one of the most vicious beatings from the Deadman along with two of the most hardest steel chair shots I have ever seen. A table gets introduced as well and so does some steel steps in this match. The interference from Bob Orton wasn't really needed but I felt this Hell in a Cell match was great. Another big time HIAC match. 5/5
Unforgiven (September 17, 2006)
Triple H & Shawn Michaels Vs. Vince, Shane McMahon, & ECW Champion Big Show - A new Hell In A Cell structure was introduced for this match. Great usage with the cell and the weapons that were used such as a sledgehammer & steel chairs are used very effectively in this HIAC match. It has a vicious and sickening ending with HHH breaking a sledgehammer on the back on Mr. McMahon. This is another hellacious match. 5/5
Survivor Series (November 18, 2007)
Undertaker Vs. World Heavyweight Champion Batista - The new amplified version of the Hell In A Cell continued here as the Undertaker & Batista ended their nealry year long feud. Undertaker is another guy that brings out the best in Batista and this was a tremendous match. Not a whole lot of weapons used but the ones that were, Undertaker & Batista uses them very effectively. They could have used the cell more but it was still good. The ending and the post-match beat down from Edge is something to check out and it really added more to the match. 5/5
Hell In A Cell is called the Devil's Structure and every match from this set displays why. This is an awesome set to add to your collection and is HIGHLY recommended.

(More customer reviews)I swore I would not open this DVD until after seeing L. Cohen in Oakland the Monday after next. But I'm so glad I broke my vow.
This is one of the most wonderful concerts I've ever seen captured on DVD.
The band and Leonard's singers are top-notch, and one senses that they feel as though they are a part of something special.
The songs span nearly 40 years of a canon that is second to none.
Most amazing of all,though, is how a digital disc can cut through its own technology and exude so much warmth and passion. Even when the camera shows a close shot of Cohen, one can still sense the warmth, love and admiration coming from the ecstatic London audience.
As for Leonard Cohen...if he were to do nothing but sing, that would be enough given the wonderful breadth of material performed at this concert.
However, his gentle and gracious command of the stage provides this show an added depth and dimension. Within the span of minutes he can be hilarious, self-deprecating, humble, poignant, appreciative...and I could easily go on with the superlatives to describe his on-stage demeanor.
Very often I make a point of remembering to trust the art and not the artist. In the case of Leonard Cohen, I tend to trust both. His warmth seems genuine. Unlike so many of his stature, his humility comes across as real. His spoken words are every bit as powerful as those that are sung. Given the way that the barriers are broken down between the singer and the band and the audience...to the point where it feels as though they are all part of one celebratory evening...such humility, graciousness and warmth cannot be anything but genuine.
The highlights are too many to mention: "Suzanne" sounds as fresh as it did 40 years ago. "Anthem" sounds more urgent today than when it was first penned. "The Future" & "First We Take Manahattan" are even more biting now in the 21st Century than when they were first penned. Cohen's increased age gives songs such as "Boogie Street," "Tower of Song," & "Democracy" a world weariness that makes these songs all the more penetrating. His lovely "If It Be Your Will" sounds as much like a prayer as it does one of the loveliest songs ever written. If I don't stop now, I'll wind up writing accolades about every song on this DVD. Yes, it is that wonderful!
I've been fortunate to see so many of the greats in my lifetime - legends whose works will be remembered for decades to come. Some have been surly and stand-offish. Others have been appreciative and welcoming toward their audience.
It is refreshing to see the best of everything embodied in this Leonard Cohen concert. Songs that are amongst the best ever written, still performed with a passion (as well as with the added wisdom that comes from Cohen being 74 years young), with a band & audience & singer all equally committed to one another.
There are moments when I laughed out loud at Leonard's deadpan, wry humor. There were times when tears welled in my eyes from the sincerity of the words that came out of his mouth, either spoken or in song.
In a day and age where so much seems packaged and perfunctionary, it is refreshing to see & hear someone such as Cohen whose observations can warm the heart or cut like a knife to get to the heart of a matter. He is the real deal. No airs, no faux modesty...just a man with four decades' worth of majestic material, with an excellent band whose respect for Cohen is reciprocated by their singer with his respect for their talents & abilities, along with a genuine warmth & sense of humanity that allows Leonard Cohen to turn a large London venue into a setting that is as intimate as being in one's living room.
Without a doubt, one of the finest, most moving and most satisfying concert DVDs I've ever seen.
I'm glad that I opened this prior to April 13. Seeing this makes me look forward to seeing Cohen in a small Oakland theater even more so than I already was.
However, had I not been fortunate enough to have gotten a ticket for his upcoming concert, I have to say that this DVD would have been a more than fine consolation. It is worth every cent. The staging, lighting, musicianship, song selection and sound are painstakingly stellar, obviously given great care & much thought.
This is a true gem, a most worthy representation of one of the greatest songwriters of our time.

(More customer reviews)This guy is amazing.After selling 20million records came with an impressive change, the album SINCERO-2003, USA Grammy 2004 award nominee, plenty of beautiful ballads, crazy rythms an a magical superb catchy cumbia turns into steady-rock written by one of the best spaniard young songwriters of nowadays, Juan Mogica(the guy, now living between NYC, Madrid and Miami-I've searching his live-is a sort of crazy Nomad guy that has been written many of the greatest pop songs of the lately 10 years for the best latin artists and himself), and the album had an state-of-the-art production by Luis Ochoa, Rene Toledo(The producer of the best Julio Iglesias albums)and a couple of guys of his 90's era.After that amazing album that have sold more than one million records, Chayanne release a couple of personal and interesting as himself albums with great success.But now, this is a real musical revolution, maybe more for the latin audience, but I think that an artist that wait 30 years to release his first Live Cd-DVD looking for the perfection or is God or is too close.Only Peter Gabriel has that kind of artistic contemplation.
Chayanne is a very smart guy.And it's an unique artist.One between a million.I have bought and enjoy a lot of live albums and Dvd shows, but this is an unique one in a lifetime experience.
Recorded at River Plate, Argentina, land of rock and the latin country with more musical cultural level, and an audience mad because the impressive show than more than 60.000 people in HD quality with all his hits you can't doubt about it!!
