Baby Looney Tunes, Vol. 3 - Puddly Olympics

A few weeks ago, I gambled on renting "Baby Looney Tunes: Puddle Olympics," at a local video store in hopes that my little boy would find something besides "Mickey Mouse Clubhouse," that would draw his attention for a little while. As it turned out, I was so pleasantly surprised that I bought this product less than a week later.
On this DVD, the cast members at Granny's Daycare are: Granny (voiced by June Foray herself) and the toddler versions of Bugs, Daffy, Sylvester, Tweety, Tazz, and Lola Bunny. Occasionally, they are joined by pint-sized Melissa (Daffy's love interest from 'The Scarlet Pumpernickel') and Petunia Pig. There are eight episodes with four 60-second sing-a-long music videos for a running time of almost 90 minutes.
Four of the episodes are: 1. 'Time & Time Again,' as Daffy learns the value of knowing how to tell time; 2. 'May the Best Taz Win,' as the gang learns why playing is more important than winning; 3. 'Sylvester the Pester' has our favorite feline craving Granny's attention without let-up until Tazz does the same thing to him; and 4. 'Mine!' (our least favorite) has Daffy finding Granny's lost wallet and refusing to give it back.
The next four are: 5. 'Cat-Taz Trophy,' as Sylvester and Tazz learn to share when competing in a toy car derby; 6. 'Duck! Monster! Duck' has Daffy finding out what it is like to be scared; 7. 'Brave Little Tweety' has timid little Tweety finding his own courage; and the title episode is the best, 8. 'Puddle Olympics' shows the tykes turning their imagination into a competitive game to cross a puddle (it looks like a lake to them) to reach the playground on the other side.
Now, frankly, I confess that I wouldn't have been caught dead watching a show like this before I was a parent, but now that I am, I have learned a new perspective. Accordingly, I want to address a few common points made by other reviewers about this program's available DVDs: one, that this show is a travesty on the classic Looney Tunes characters; and two, that the characters' inconsistent behavior tends to veer back and forth between infants and four or five-year olds. I am certainly inclined to agree with those observations, but I think it misses the most vital point: we, as adults, are not this show's intended audience; little kids are.
As a comparison, yes, "Baby Looney Tunes" is in the same genre as "A Pup Named Scooby Doo," and "Little Flintstones," where the original audience (who are now adults) will likely find these new versions vastly inferior to their classic predecessors. However, these new 'kiddy-ified' programs were produced as a way of reinventing classic cartoon characters for a different and much younger generation. Further, "Baby Looney Tunes" has a distinct advantage over similiar kiddy makeovers, where this show actually blending cute, gentle humor with a simple, little life lesson into the story giving the program at least some educational value.
Much like current morning fare on the Disney Channel, such as "Mickey Mouse Clubhouse," I believe "Puddle Olympics" strives to make the featured stories important by making basic concepts, like telling time or sharing toys, attractive to infants and toddlers. It surely isn't always easy to balance fun with learning, but give this program credit for at least trying. Is "Baby Looney Tunes" in the same league as the current bigger-budget Disney Channel programs? Maybe, maybe not, but it does offer its intended audience (not to mention, parents) more than just a mindless diversion.
With that in mind, speaking as a parent, I would highly recommend "Puddle Olympics," as a low-cost, albeit valuable investment for your little ones, particularly as an alternative to your child's favorite show that you just need a break from. Like me, you may be surprised that this charming DVD is much better than you would have reasonably expected.

There's no time like the present to kick off Vol. 3 as Granny decides to teach everyone how to tell time. Daffy thinks it's a waste of his time...until bad timing turns his day into a nightmare. Daffy wants Lola to be his badminton teammate because Taz doesn't know how to play. But it's Lola who discovers the true meaning of sportsmanship when she teaches Bugs and Daffy that winning isn't everything. Daffy gets into trouble as he finds Granny's wallet and decides it's "Mine!" Fortunately, his obsession with possession teaches him that "finders keepers" is a game for weepers. Tweety's fear of the dark makes him a scaredy bird. So his pals put on a play to show what a big hero tiny Tweety can be! Four more endearing episodes complete this wonderful collection -- along with 4 sing-along songs to make growing up a Looney Tunesful, playful time!

The Seventh Series of Friends, I hate to admit, is not my favourite. I believe the storylines are a little to mundane and the actors try and do the best with what they're given. Their are 24 episodes in all. Below is a description of each to refresh your memories.

The One With Rachel's Book - Everyone begins planning for Chandler and Monica's wedding - except her parents, who blow her wedding money on a beach house.
The One With Phoebe's Cookies - Phoebe holds the key to the best-tasting cookies ever, which drives chef Monica crazy. Rachel gets high-handed while trying to teach Joey how to sail.
The One With Rachel's Assistant - Given the chance to employ her own assistant, Rachel overlooks more able female candidates in favour of a young, attractive man.
The One With The Engagement Picture - While taking an engagement picture for himself and Monica, Chandler can't help pulling a weird face.

The One With The Nap Partners - Rachel and Phoebe compete to be Monica's maid of honour. Joey and Ross find themselves in awkward positions after a nap.
The One With Ross's Library Book - Monica runs into Janice and accidentally invites her to the wedding. Ross is upset that his dissertation is in the section of the library where students go to make out.
The One Where Chandler Doesn't Like Dogs - Tag joins the gang for Thanksgiving dinner, where Joey proceeds to spill the beans about Rachel's crush on him. Phoebe sneaks a dog into the apartment, making Chandler extremely nervous
The One With All The Candy - Monica decides to make candy for the neighbors in her apartment building so that she can get to know all of them.
The One With the Holiday Armadillo - Chandler and Monica go on a special date, where he realizes he's not as smooth as her ex, Richard. Phoebe worries that Rachel would rather stay living with Joey instead of moving into their new apartment together.
The One With All The Cheesecakes - Monica is hurt when she isn't invited to her cousin's wedding but Ross is.

The One Where They're Up All Night - Ross assembles the gang on the roof to watch a meteor shower, but becomes trapped up there with Joey.

The One Where They All Turn Thirty - As the gang celebrate Rachel's 30th birthday, she ponders what she should do to achieve her remaining life ambitions. The others look back at their own 30th birthday parties.

The One With Joey's New Brain - Joey accidentally tells a fellow cast member on 'Days of Our Lives' that she is to be fired.
The One With The Truth About London - Chandler finds out that Monica actually wanted to sleep with Joey in London.
The One With The Cheap Wedding Dress - Monica regrets telling a fellow bride-to-be about a cheaper bridal store when she has to fight the woman tooth and nail for a unique wedding dress.

Lovejoy: The Complete Collection (2009) Review

Lovejoy: The Complete Collection (2009)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Lovejoy was one of the best television series ever offered on BBC and later shown in America. It had cult followings in both the UK and U.S. during its television showings. I watched almost every episode. Lovejoy (Ian McShane) is a "divvie," a person who can instinctively tell if an antique is authentic and valuable without consulting books or doing research. The term comes from the word "diviner" and it's a talent that few if any others possess. With such a talent Lovejoy is a natural for the antiques business, but his several character flaws prevent him from making a fortune. Instead, this lovable rogue gets himself in situations that are humorous, mysterious, and often exciting. Sometimes these involve crimes committed by others or by Lovejoy himself! In other episodes, Lovejoy helps to solve curious mysteries or helps some person in distress who seeks him out. Wonderful old antique objects are always a part of the plot and Lovejoy is not above sometimes creating or improving these in ways that satisfy a customer, pay off a debt, or get hilarious revenge on an unscrupulous adversary.
Lovejoy's friends--Tinker Dill, Eric Catchpole, and Lady Jane Felsham--are also amusing, often hilarious. Tinker is Lovejoy's inebriated sidekick who knows quite a bit about the antique business himself. Eric's character is really funny: a sullen, sometimes resentful assistant whom Lovejoy does not always treat with respect but who's actions always gets laughs. Lady Jane is Lovejoy's wealthy but married female friend who likes to hang out with the lovable rogue; she often financially aids Lovejoy and willingly and sometimes unwillingly helps facilitate his plots. There is an ambiguity about their personal relationship that continues throughout the series. Are they interested in each other romantically or not? Lovejoy is set to get married to someone else in the final episode of the series but with hilarious results. In fact, both Lady Jane and Eric disappear as characters in Series 6.
All of the episodes in the Lovejoy series were shown on television in the U.S. during the 1990s. Current viewers may know Ian McShane only from his character in Deadwood or perhaps the short-lived Kings. McShane is a really fine actor who completely envelopes his character and creates very satisfying drama. If you love British drama such as the popular murder mystery series (Inspector Morse, Foyle's War, Inspector Lewis) or historical dramas (Reilly, Ace of Spies, Love for Lydia, Brideshead Revisited, I, Claudius) or comedies (Rumpole of the Bailey), you will certainly love Lovejoy. I always eagerly watched each episode.
Now that the series is complete, I highly recommend that you purchase this complete collection. It is encoded for Region 1 and was converted from its original PAL format in which it was created to the NTSC format used in the U.S. From reviews I have read, it appears the conversion was accomplished satisfactorily. The complete Lovejoy collection has been available in PAL format in Great Britain since 2004, so it apparently took five years to get the conversion done properly. You can buy the complete PAL Lovejoy, in All Region format, from Amazon.co.uk for the same price as here. If you have only a Region 1 DVD player as most of us do you in all likelihood cannot play PAL DVDs because of Region locking (not a problem with this PAL set since it is All Region) and because the great majority of Region 1 DVD players have had their PAL playback ability disabled. Also, most NTSC display devices cannot display PAL images. For U.S. customers, it is probably better to just buy this new NTSC set and not worry that the PAL set (higher resolution than NTSC and originally shot in PAL) is probably better and available at the same price. I haven't seen the PAL set so I can't personally judge.
Note: Do not buy the Lovejoy Christmas Specials DVD if you buy this complete collection as Amazon suggests in its "Frequently Bought Together" section. The Lovejoy Complete Collection already includes the two Christmas specials.

I've watched the entire series a number of times on PBS and BBC America. VHS or DVD videos of all series now available have a prominent place in my video library. If you are totally fed up with the foul language, gratitious sex and nudity and the absolute stupidity of 99% of American TV fare this series is for you. The subtle humor, tenderness, and great acting by Judi Dench, Geoffrey Palmer and the rest of the cast make for an unforgettable story that will have you rolling on the floor and/or shedding a few tears. I admit to being completely hooked!

Nero Wolfe - The Complete First Season (2001) Review

Nero Wolfe - The Complete First Season (2001)

I have been a fan of Rex Stout for a long, long time. One reason I often dislike seeing books made into movies, or at least feel the movie pales when compared to the books, because often people see things differently. So when a beloved set of characters such as Nero Wolfe and Archie Goodwin is brought to film, I automatically cringe, because I am rarely pleased with the results. They tried in the late 70's with Thayer David playing Wolfe and Tom Mason as Archie. Excellent casting, but was a little late. Thayer David, a Sydney Greenstreet type actor, was perfect casting for Wolfe - the 1/7 of a ton genius detective that detects while never leaving him home. Only David was already ill, dying of cancer, so the weight loss and lacking of strength sadly hurt his performance. Later it was redone with William Conrad as Wolfe and too sexy Lee Horsely as Archie. Sorry, the series had Wolfe pacing when expounding to suspects and sitting on the corner of his desk. It made you wonder if the writers ever read Stout's books. So, when
Timothy Hutton stepped into Archie's shoes I had mixed reservations. I love Hutton, son of the brilliant Jim Hutton. While you see a lot of his daddy in him, he is definitely his own man, and cuts a smart style when fleshing out his roles.
So I thought, okay, he would make a good Archie. Then I wondered what about Wolfe? They cast Maury Chaykin. Brilliant! Wow, someone actually loved the books enough to follow them.
A&E is to be commended in letting Hutton run with the series for two seasons. They are to be CONDEMNED for canceling it because they deemed it too expensive to make. Shame on them! The series was a class act all the way. A delightful ensemble cast who changed roles episode to episode gave it a theatre feel.
The costuming is great, the acting divine and the stories - well, I actually KNEW what book they were based on! It was HEAVEN.
So A&E I thank you for putting out these wonderful episodes so we Archie Addicts can enjoy them again. And go take a flying leap for canceling what is nirvana in detective land.

Def Poetry - Season 1 (2002)

This DVD is definitely a must have for all dvd collectors. As Mos Def stated in a few of the shows, these artists get up there and say things you may already be thinking. They will have you laughing at times, and will have you reflecting on the state of our society at others. As they show clips of the audience, you find every skin tone and age up in there and its a beautiful thing to see them all laughing together and even shedding tears together...It's deep..
Based on my experience from Def Comedy Jam, I was expecting all of the artists to be African American, but Russell mixed it up with Caucasians, Asians and Arabs which was HOT...We never really know how different people look at the world and this gives you a glimpse into what each person sees and what they've been through.
DEFinitely a classic!!
