Miffy and Friends: Miffy's Playtime (2004) Review

Miffy and Friends: Miffy's Playtime (2004)
Average Reviews:

Not to imply that television needs its own introduction for children, but since the TV was crafted, human's have been watching it. Everyone needs a half hour or so to sit and either be informed, entertained and in todays world even shocked in the comfort of their own home. There's nothing wrong with watching TV and the time in a day is very long for a toddler, even longer for the parent chasing after one. So if you need to prepare dinner, read the paper, or even just sit down and day dream, this is the perfect video to get that slight, however much needed break from finger painting and reading that one book twenty times. First, I believe this is called stop animation, which is more enjoyable and easier for children to watch rather than the fast flashing of most cartoons. Then there's the narrartor, a soft, pleasant woman's voice which tells each story in the right of amount expression, like Alec Baldwin's voice in the Thomas The Tank Engine series. The same, familiar, sunny voice that draws children to the story. Also the stories are short, the music is happy, the characters are diverse and very thoughtful of each other. The little animal families are ones all children will relate to as there's the only child, Miffy, with her mother and father, Grunty the Pig who lives with his Aunt Poppy, Boris and Barbara Bear who are married, but with no kids and all of Miffy's classmates and friends.
Then there are the brief breaks between each story which poses more of a word problem, for example, instead of just counting three flowers, three birds and three worms the child is asked after counting three flowers and three birds, if there's one worm under each flower how many worms are there. Which isn't going to make your child a wizard at math, but for a childrens video, I feel this is a more creative approach to the vidoes educational value.
Nothing is more important that reading to your child and taking your child out to the park or your neighborhood recreation center to educate and stimulate your childs mind. But I will admitt I'd rather my young child say Miffy is their favorite program than that big, purple, goofey and borderline frightening phoney dinosaur. Just for an option.

Caillou's Holiday Movie (2003) Review

Caillou's Holiday Movie (2003)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Looking at "Caillou's Holiday Movie," it's obvious that the staff of the show was going for someting a little different. Stories in the show itself are only an average of five minutes long, but this is a full ninety-minute presentation.
The writers and animators seem to have been successful and the result is a great story with beautiful musical interludes that kids will enjoy watching. There's a lot to be learned about holiday traditions from around the world, much of it coming from a twelve days of Christmas calendar that Caillou receives as present from Daddy. Although there are no puppet segments, most of the best characters are present in the story, including some favorite guest characters that are nice references to past stories. Fans of Rosie will also enjoy the movie and the special way in which she surprises everyone in Caillou's family.
If buying the DVD, note that while the story is good, the special features really aren't much to cheer about. The Caillou interview bonus doesn't actually relate to the movie, but is actually more of a cute filler segment in which Sarah attempts an interview with Caillou for her school, but can't get straight answers out of Caillou and then experiences technical difficulties. The "singalongs" are simply cut from the movie, they don't even have lyrics at the bottom of the screen or close-captioning to follow along. Finally, the promotion of "six Caillou challenges" is somewhat miselading. There are a two games including, each with three levels, for a total of six "challenges."

I WAS GIVEN TWO OF THESE ON VHS BY A FRIEND, HER KIDS WERE TOO OLD FOR THEM. I LEFT THEM IN THE BOX OF ODDS AND ENDS FOR MONTHS.
I CAME ACROSS THEM ONE DAY AND THOUGHT I WOULD PUT ONE IN.
MY DAUGHTER LOVED THEM, THEY ARE SIMPLE, ALMOST ON THE CHEESEY SIDE. BUT MY DAUGHTER COULD NOT GET ENOUGH, I JUST BOUGHT THE WHOLE SET AND MY SON IS NOW HOOKED.
THEY ARE A GREAT BUY AND I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND THEM.

Harold and the Purple Crayon - The Complete Series (2002) Review

Harold and the Purple Crayon - The Complete Series (2002)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My son absolutely loves Harold. Overall, the shows are great; they integrate music and images really nicely. The only caution I have to parents with young children is this: One of the episodes is about Harold losing the moon so that he is left in the dark. My three year old was never afraid of anything until he watched this episode. He wanted to watch it over and over after he saw it the first time. Then, at night in his bed, he was freaking out saying he saw an eye on his bed (a piece of metal on his bed that shone in the light of the night light) and he has been afraid of being in a separate room from me from time to time since. Anyway, I would highly recommend the series; it is great wholesome fun- just don't let your child watch the one when Harold loses the moon. Also, be sensitive to the fact that there is one sad episode where a goldfish dies.

Mickey Mouse Clubhouse - Mickey's Treat (2006)
Average Reviews:

Just received this DVD today and like Mickey's Great Clubhouse Hunt and Mickey Saves Santa, this one is great and my 2 year old son loves it. There are two other episodes on the DVD that we have seen on Playhouse Disney. There is the Dr. Daisy episode where Daisy tries to earn her pretend dr. sticker and there is the Magician Goofy episode where the gang helps Goofy practice his magic tricks for the magic show. We've seen these several times before but my son still loves to watch them. The Halloween episode is cute. I just wish they would release more! If your little one is a Mickey Mouse lover then he/she will love this one as well, there is no doubt!!

Go Diego Go Diego's Arctic Rescue (2009) Review

Go Diego Go Diego's Arctic Rescue (2009)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This DVD has 3 episodes. One long episode focusing on Polar Bears, one episode on Puffins (penguin-like birds), and one episode focusing on Okapi (odd deer/giraffe like creatures). The Puffin episode has especially catchy songs.
The Go Diego Go TV series is especially effective at eliciting responses from my toddler; and this DVD is his FAVORITE.
Diego is an animal rescuer who, along with his side-kick baby jaguar and his sister Alecia, sets out to help an animal in trouble, solving many problems along the way. Diego is Dora's ("Dora the Explorer" TV series) cousin; however, the Diego TV series seems to be aimed at slightly older kids than Dora--the songs, puzzles and responses requested are more sophisticated than in the Dora series.
Each episode in the series focus on one creature and teaches 4-8 facts about it. 3-5 of those facts are repeated and demonstrated multiple times during the episode with a clever quiz at the end. My 2 year old usually gets 50% or better the first time through, so I think their technique must work.
But beyond the educational value--the shows are just fun and engaging. My toddler loves the characters and gets wrapped up in the plots and will talk to the characters when they ask for responses/"help". Even Sesame Street, which he adores, couldn't do that! Plus, it's a show I don't mind watching with him--always a bonus!

My daughters, 2 and 4 years, love the show even though they do not understand English. They need minimal translation because the acting makes it easy to understand what is going on. My children have learned some English words and they show much more intrest in cleaning up their room. They could watch it for the whole day but I only allow 2-3 hours of TV. I highly recomend this show.
