Ever since the second season ended on TV, I've been scouring Amazon and Best Buy at least twice a month for the release date!
The second season of the 4400 begins a year after the events of season 1, not counting the small interlude with Richard and Lily in hiding, and Lily going into labor with her baby.
Since the end of season 1, Baldwin has been stuck behind a desk while Skouris, rotating through a number of incompetent partners, has made little to no progress investigating the 4400. Skouris is also adopting the clairvoyant girl Maia as her daughter, and Baldwin's son Kyle, out of his coma, has been in quaratine for the past year, much to his frustration. Jordan Collier, billionaire and 4400 member, is attempting to build a seperate nation or some such for the 4400, and he's not above breaking the law to do it. His search for Richard, Lily, and their six-month-old baby Isabelle also continues, while Richard & Lily are on the run from the US government, and zealots who believe the 4400 to be a harbinger of doom. The cast took a bit of a blow with the departure of Peter Coyote as boss Dennis Ryland, who was replaced by Samantha Ferris as the new boss, Nina Jarvis.Star Trek fans receive a bit of a treat this season with appearances by Jeffery Combs (DS9's Weyoun, Brunt & Enterprise's Shran) and Robert Picardo (Voyager's Emergency Medical Hologram).
With the third season set to begin this summer (with Combs appearing in half of the episodes!), I'm eager to see the second season again, without commercials.
The 4400 is the best sci-fi series on TV these days, IMHO, since the loss of Star Trek: Enterprise and The X-Files, which is why I'm proud to add this set to my collection.
Twelve episodes make up the 2nd season, and they're 12 good hours to spend. :-)
But if you plan to spend summer watching reality shows, I pity you.

(More customer reviews)I loved the book and the movie. I never miss the series. Even reruns are tremendous. In this season, several episodes are standouts. "Deja Voodoo" and "The Hunt" were dynamite episodes worth watching over and over again. "The Hunt" shows remote viewing, which is the ability to "see" things from a distant location. I had read about government use of remote viewing some 15 years ago! What they showed in this episode was similar to what I had read.
Here is a brief episode guide, which I hope will be helpful.
1. Valley of the Shadow: The kidnapper of a CEO's son is obsessed with Johnny.
2. Descent(1): Several teenagers are lost in an abandoned mine owned by Johnny's grandfather.
3. Ascent (2): Johnny psychically enters Walt's coma.
4. The Outsider: Johnny has a vision that a skin cream is responsible for severe birth defects in the future.
5. Precipitate: After Johnny is given a blood transfusion from 6 donors, he has visions of their lives.
6. Scars: Stillson's political rival is a war veteran. Guest star (gs): Gerald McRaney
7. Misbegotten: Three women kidnap Johnny and take him to a house where a family was killed.
8. Cabin Pressure: Johnny has a vision that the jet he is on will crash.
9. The Man Who Never Was: After a delivery person leaves an item belonging to a shut-in, Johnny gets a vision that he is disappearing. gs: Robert Culp.
10. Dead Men Tell Tales: Johnny saves the life of a mob boss and ends up in the middle of a mafia dispute.
11. Playing God: Johnny has a vision that a friend will die in a car accident. Every vision shows a worse outcome, whenever Johnny tries to save her. gs: Ally Sheedy.
12. Zion: Bruce's father has died and Bruce comes face to face with an unresolved past. gs: Louis Gossett, Jr.
13. The Storm: While Bruce is trying to bring Johnny to an intervention, Johnny has visions of a massive storm.
14. Plague: Johnny "sees" a high school science fair during which a deadly illness spreads to the children.
15. Deja Voodoo: Johnny has a vision of a romantic encounter with a beautiful woman that ends in her death. (Especially good and unpredictable.)
16. The Hunt: Johnny participates in remote viewing sponsored by the CIA. Osama Bin Laden as a target is implied but never spoken. (Gripping episode.)
17. The Mountain: Johnny has a vision that a plane with valuable cargo had crashed in the mountains.
18. The Combination: Johnny's vision is that a boxer will die during a fight.
19. Visions: A man from the future asks for Johnny's help.

(More customer reviews)I was pleasantly surprised by this. The product details don't mention it at all, but this IS a "thinpaks" release. The set contains all episodes of seasons 1-5 on 50 discs in 25 dual-disc thinkpaks, packaged in a sturdy, cardboard box. The box is much smaller than the Amazon product photo makes it appear. Placed sideways on your bookshelf it will take up less room than the First Season box set. The artwork on the outer sleeves of each thinpak is the same as previous releases. Artwork on the spines of all thinpaks, when viewed together, portray the Amdromeda Ascendant comin' at ya! The discs in this collection are single-sided, unlike the double-sided discs in the 2-5 season box sets. The content and episodes on the discs are the same as in previous releases. If you already own the previous releases, this may not interest you much. However, if you didn't like the double-sided discs of the season 2-5 sets and would like the space this set will save on your shelves, it IS worth getting.

Andromeda - Season 4 Collection (2000) Review

(More customer reviews)Although this particular run of Andromeda does not feature as much of the struggle as was felt in seasons 1, 2 and 3, it does feature all of the elements which made the series enjoyable. There is lots of campy dialogue, lots of space battles, and lots of sci fi fun. However, by this point the series assumes that viewers are knowledgable about the show. From the beginning, the season begins to tackle long unanswered questions about the series, revealing such secrets as the true origins of Bekka, Trance and Tyr. For thos who have never seen the show, I recommend that you purchase seasons 1 or 2. For fans of the series, I highly recommend this addition to your collection.
The season starts with the exit of Tyr, and the first four episodes without him are a little shaky. Fans of Harper will enjoy watching Harper trudge his way through away missions with Romy and Bekka. This is fun because Harper had previously been left behind on the ship in most episodes before this season.
Fans of the series will remember that Rev Bem left the series midway through season 3, so the show lost two of its male characters. The early episodes of the show then allow Harper to step up and take a more commanding role in the series. Evidently, this didn't sit so well with producers, who then added Telemachus Rhade to the cast.
Telemachus Rhade is a direct descendant of Gaheris Rhade, the dude who betrayed Captain Hunt in Episode 1. Thanks to Season 3's "the Unconquerable Man", we have been led to understand that Gaheris is in fact, an honorable man, and therefore, we can trust his descendant. IHMO, the addition of this new character helps this series immensly.
Played by Steve Bacic, Rhade's tortured sense of need to evolve as a Nietzchien instantly gives us a peek into an impressive but troubled character.
Tyr makes a comeback in two of the Rhade episodes as a dreadlock-less slave to the Abyss. Tyr and Rhade make for some tremendous fight scenes, and we say goodbye to Tyr in a way that kept me waiting for his return.
Trance really comes into her own this season, and the revelations made about Bekka's past help to fill out her character.
As for the special features, you probably saw all this stuff when it came out on individual dvd sets. Still, some interviews, behind the scenes, bloopers and deleted scenes will keep most fans happy. Also, there is an alternative ending to the season, to my understanding something they wrote with the thought that the show may be cancelled at the end of the fourth season (I have no way of confirming this right now, sorry) .
My only complaint with this and all the other Andromeda DVD sets is that the sound is never in Dolby 5.1. It is in Dolby surround sound, but you'd think they'd be able to add that feature without difficulty.
However, these are small complaints about a great overall set.

(More customer reviews)4,400 people who disappeared over the last 60 years are returned to earth all at once, and they are the same age as when they were abducted. The returnees have no memory of what happened while they were gone, and some demonstrate supernatural powers that they didn't have before they left.
Two federal agents, Tom and Diana, are assigned to investigate. Tom's nephew is one of the returnees who has been missing for three years. Diana develops a relationship with a now parentless child who was abducted several decades ago. The writers do a nice job of combining threads that continue from episode to episode with the new situations that arise. This show has been described as "X-Files meet X-Men". Recommended for sci-fi or fantasy fans.
I hunted around the internet for some information about the DVD. I found www.the4400.com, which says that the Pilot and four episodes is included on the DVD set. The artwork doesn't mention any extras, which is disappointing if that is the case.
1. Pilot (2 hour movie): What scientists believe is a comet is actually a ball of light that leaves behind 4400 missing persons. The 4400 are quarantined and finally released.
2. The New & Improved Carl Morrissey: One of the 4400 becomes a vigilante trying to clean up the crime in his neighborhood.
3. Becoming: An M.O. used in a homicide is the same as the M.O. of a serial killer from 25 years ago. As the public turns hostile toward the 4400, one returnee, Jordan, decides to organize.
4. Trial By Fire: When a reporter makes the names of the 4400 public, the returnees are targeted by fire-bombers. Jordan tries to provide shelter for his fellow returnees.
5. White Light: The federal agents make a discovery about what had really happened to the 4400.
It's been a while since an episode aired, and I had some question about its future status. I've read that Season 2 has been ordered and will have 13 episodes starting in June 2005.

Odyssey 5 - The Complete Series (2002) Review

(More customer reviews)An intelligent well written series that was cancelled too soon "Odyssey 5" only ran one season on Showtime before the network in its infinite wisdom (much as the Sci-Fi Channel did with "Farscape") to pull the plug before writer/creator/producer Manny Coto had a chance to resolve the story. Coto went on to revive "Star Trek: Enterprise" surprising the best two seasons of that show and providing one of the most compelling story arcs "Enterprise" had. He's since gone on to co-producer and writer "24". Even without its resolution "Odyssey 5" is a worthwhile show to watch. Working on a shoestring budget compared to most shows Coto managed to produce a number of intelligent episodes with some outstanding acting and effects work. Although the DVD set lacks the powerhouse extras we see on some releases it does include a terrific commentary track on the pilot episode with Manny Cotto and Peter Weller providing the play-by-play on the shooting of the show and unshot episodes.
While completing a routine mission to service a satellite the crew of the Space Shuttle Odyssey 5 Commander Chuck Taggart (Peter Well), biologist Kurt Mendel (Sebastian Roch?), Neil Taggart (Christopher Gorham), astronaut Angela Perry (Tamara Craig Thomas) and TV newscaster Sara Forbes witness the implosion of the Earth. Suddenly the human race with the exception of these five individuals has been wiped out. Running out of oxygen and with no options the crew wait for their end aboard the Space Shuttle. They're saved by an alien who calls himself the Seeker (John Neville "Baron Munchausen" and "The X-Files") whose own world was also wiped out by a mysterious force referred to as Leviathan. It seems the Seeker has been trying to contact other intelligent species for 300 years but each time he arrives it's the same-the world has been destroyed with all its inhabitants. The Odyssey 5 crew are the first survivors he's run into and he offers them the hope of averting Earth's destruction by sending their consciousness 5 years into the past so they can unravel who and what was behind the Earth's destruction.
While some episodes of the show could be a bit routine (for example the one where the crew begin losing their memory had a lot of potential but fails to deliver)the overall quality of the show was extremely high with intelligent scripts that dealt with difficult ethical and moral issues within a science fiction frame work. For example the series frequently deals with the impact when the crew tries to change tragic or difficult events in their own past and how things don't quite work out the way they had planned. Overall the show had much promise and I'm hoping that Coto returns to the show again either in a TV mini-series format (hopefully with the original cast) or film to resolve the cliffhanging conclusion of the show. Sony has provided us with "Odyssey 5" on five dual layered single sided discs. Although there's some minor digital artifacts overall the show looks splendid. With sharp, bold colors and a strong 5.1 mix. The dialogue is clear and crisp while direction effects are particularly nice during the pilot episode.
While short on special features the show is presented as it aired on Showtime not the version that was broadcast on the Sci-Fi Channel. Manny Coto and Peter Weller provide an intelligent perceptive commentary track on the two hour pilot episode. It's a pity that Sony chose not to have them do a commentary track on any of the other episodes but I'm grateful that we got some extras with this set. I'm sure that Showtime probably had a behind-the-scenes featurette that they aired prior to the show's premiere but Sony would probably have to license that from Showtime. The price for the 19 episodes is a bit steep (but not out of line with other shows of its type) however given the excellent transfer, 5.1 mix and commentary track it's worth it. Coto doesn't share how the series was going to conclude in the commentary track as he has hopes that he might be able to revive the concept for a made for cable movie (Sci-Fi this is your chance to make up for screwing the pooch when you cancelled "Farscape") or a series of movies. I'm hoping that he can pull it all together as this series (and its fans) deserves to have a resolution worthy of its intriguing concept.
A terrific show that certainly deserved better treatment than it received from Showtime (hey if Showtime can keep on some of the trash they've committed to over the years they certainly should have lived up to the commitment to allow Coto to close out the series), "Odyssey 5" may frustrate a few fans because it doesn't have a resolution but the show's terrific writing and acting make this a worthwhile show to pick up for science fiction fans. I knew there was a good reason why I cancelled Showtime.
So why not 5 stars? The transfer is exceptional (5 stars) with great 5.1 audio. The show deserves it but without a resolution and only 1 extra (Manny Coto and Peter Weller's commentary track which is exceptional)the set gets four stars. Hopefully Coto can convince the Sci-Fi Channel (which ran the series recently) to spring for a six hour minin-series to tie up the loose ends much like "Farscape" (a show that Sci-Fi idiotically cancelled and then returned to for the concluding mini-series).

Stargate Atlantis - The Complete Second Season (2004) Review

(More customer reviews)The second season of Stargate Atlantis begins on an adrenaline high with the third and final part of Season One's "The Siege" and the action doesn't end with the season opener. One character departs the show as a regular to make room for model, turned bad-boy, Jason Momoa, who plays Ronon Dex, a Wraith Runner; while a new group of the Atlantis Expedition arrives from Earth aboard the newest ship in the fleet, the Daedelus. This season, helped by the amazing chemistry of the cast, shows its maturity early with story lines that can be enjoyed as separate episodes while giving die-hard fans a well thought out story arc involving the Wraith, Ancients and other interesting discoveries from the Pegasus Galaxy.
Overall Atlantis has not only met fan's expectations but has slowly exceeded its parent series, Stargate SG-1. If you're a fan of the Stargate Movie and haven't seen an episode of SG-1 I highly recommend buying the first nine seasons on DVD before jumping through the gate to Atlantis, however any fan of Sci-Fi would covet these Atlantis DVD sets.
