(More customer reviews)When this special was being advertised in HBO, I thought, okay, I will watch it. She is funny enough and there is nothing else on tv. I watched it and seriously laughed so hard that my side hurt the next morning. It was Ellen at her absolute funniest (and she is a pretty funny person). She tells a story in a totally casual way and, unlike most comedians, she realizes that the key to being funny is not to laugh at your own jokes, but to keep going like you have no idea that you just said something funny. She is a true artist. Foolishly, I didn't tape it and since then I have been scanning the tv guide for the next time that it would be on. Let me put it this way, I wouldn't be buying this on-line if it was not the funniest thing that I have ever seen and didn't want to watch it over and over again.

(More customer reviews)Ellen is definately one of a kind. I love the show - I try and catch it all the time and this was so much fun reliving some of the more hillarious parts of a terrific show. I don't know how they picked out these segments because there must be thousands and thousands of pieces to choose from, but I think they did a good job. I particularly love the segment where she's out on the road with three student drivers and their instructor. I laughed until I cried watching that again. You see Steve Martin doing all kinds of card tricks and juggling and Jim Carrey's famous bike ride through the set. I also really love the little girl who sings the State song. She's adorable.
The second disc is purley monologues without the dancing, but still it's fantastic. It's a great dvd set that you can watch a couple of times over without getting bored. Ellens personality is infectious and you'll have a ball re-watching your favourite parts of the first three seasons. I know I did.

(More customer reviews)I didn't see this series when it was originally aired ... and I am so thankful for the DVD release! The premise is that Ellen is an ex-dotcom exec whose corporation has gone belly-up. She decides to move back to her hometown, the dot-on-the-map "Clark," where she is in for a real culture shock, as she adjusts to life as a guidance counselor at her old high school, as well as living with her mom and younger sister -- who cannot begin to comprehend some of the big-city ways Ellen has picked up in L.A.
The great thing about Ellen is that in every series or show in which she appears, there's a familiar feeling that always brings joy. You don't get the feeling that she's trying to be hip, or play up a role more than necessary. There's always that, for lack of a better term, "Ellen element" that is predictable in the most surprising ways.
The show's heart comes from the hilarious ignorance of the small-town characters (marvelously portrayed by the likes of Kerri Kenney, Jim Gaffigan, and others) and Ellen's attempts to interact effectively with them. Though the first two episodes are a bit slow, the plotlines get funnier and better-paced after that. There are some hysterical moments. For instance, in the episode "Vanity Hair," Pam (Kenney) cuts Ellen's hair, as does a dog groomer -- unbeknownst to Ellen. The dialogue in the process, as well as the results, will leave you out of control!
Also worth definite mention are Cloris Leachman in her role as Ellen's mom, and Emily Rutherford as Ellen's younger sister. They play their roles in a way that is not generically stereotyped, rather, zesty and unique.
I recommend this DVD set to any Ellen fans, as well as any who appreciate down-to-earth situation comedy!
