I ordered my copy from Amazon in early November, but the company manufacturing the dvds is so overrun with orders for it that the "mass release" date has been postponed until February 27th!! Depending on the type of shipping method chosen, it might not arrive until sometime in early March.
I have watched this special on both PBS stations (in segments, during pledge drives) and on HDNET (short version, uninterrupted). The dvd coming from Amazon will have more songs from the concert at which this was taped (October, 2006). IT IS FANTASTIC, LIKE BEING AT ONE OF THE CONCERTS, BUT THE CAMERA BRINGS YOU ONTO THE STAGE! YOU WILL BE VERY HAPPY WHEN YOU FINALLY GET IT AND WATCH, I CAN ASSURE YOU!!! I just hope that it works in your dvr! I think it is even better than the A&E Live in Concert that everyone already loves!!

American Idol - The Search For A Superstar (2002) Review

American Idol - The Search For A Superstar (2002)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Okay, it doesn't seem like anyone who has actually seen the DVD has reviewed it here yet, so I thought that I'd be the first.
What it contains: A one hour synopsis of the show, starting with a seven minute recap of the audition process that was already aired as part of the finale (and unfortunately, without much footage of the final 30 being narrowed down to 10). Then comes a summary of each night of performances, each one ending with the elimination and the goodbye video for the eliminated person. Only a few performances are shown, but at least they're shown in full. They are:
Ryan Starr - "If You Really Love Me",
Justin Guarini - "For Once in My Life", "Let's Stay Together" and "A Moment Like This"
Kelly Clarkson - "Natural Woman", "Without You" (the good one from the results show), "Before Your Love" and "A Moment Like This" (from right after she won)
Christina Christian - "Ain't No Sunshine"
Tamyra Gray - "A House is Not a Home"
Nikki McKibbon - "Mary Jane" and "Black Velvet"
Group Sings - "California Dreamin", "Joy to the World" and "That's What Friends are For"
So there are some curious omissions, such as a performance by RJ Helton (who finished 5th, higher than Christina and Ryan) and Kelly's "Stuff Like That There" from Big Band night which was arguably the audience's favorite performance from the entire show. Also, the audio quality for some of the performances is poor in that it's lower than it should be. But overall, the main section of the DVD is great to have even if you taped the shows, since the visual quality is so much better.
The extras, which I won't descibe here due to space, are the best part of the DVD, especially the "Uncensored" blooper reel and the look back at the auditioning experiences of the Final Ten (which contains great interviews and some previously unseen footage, but unfortunately lacks any clips of actual auditioning). They're also almost as long as the main feature of the DVD itself, so they really double the content of the DVD.
A warning to Justin fans: This edition of the DVD does not contain the bonus disc, which has "A Day in the Life of Justin", a 16 minute feature that includes some really great footage (some filmed by Justin himself) of the preparation for the 80's/90's show with the final four.

Hitler - The Rise of Evil (2003) Review

Hitler - The Rise of Evil (2003)
Average Reviews:

I gave "The Rise of Evil" 5 stars because that's what it deserves. The show is extremely well-constructed, cast, and directed, even if the screenplay takes some liberties with history along the way. Yes, the story could have gotten along without the dog beating scene, the one where Hitler's father abuses him violently, and probably a few others. But the dramatic effect would have been impaired.
I watched the "making of" documentary that came with my DVD before I sat down to view the 3-hour movie. Then, I watched the documentary again after seeing the show. I'd recommend this approach to others to understand why the producer and director were subject to such criticism before and after the film was finished.
When this miniseries first came out we going out of town and totally missed it. My wife and I watch very little network TV because it doesn't seem like it's designed for thinking adults. This program is very much the exception and should be a must for anyone interested in world events and the dangers of facism.
Any review of this program must include comments on the performance of Robert Carlyle who plays the adult Hitler. Although the very Scottish Mr. Carlyle may be small in stature and far-removed from Hitler's teutonic roots he is mesmerizing as der Fuehrer. Carlyle captures the part so well you worry about what he could possibly do in the future to escape type-casting. It's all there: the iron will, the vicious temper, the evil political genius. Scary, truly scary.
The other actors in the show do very well, too, and there are a lot of well-defined characters. Peter O'Toole's role in the movie is limited but he does a fine job as President Hindenburg. The decent people who are steam-rolled by the 3rd Reich were sorry victims, indeed, but that's the way it must have been.
There were some characters who were notable by their absence, like Heinrich Himmler, Reinhold Heydrich, and Martin Bormann. Also missing was much on Nazi mysticism and the occult. Maybe these missing pieces are being held for a sequel. I'd certainly be interested if there were one.

Featuring a star-studded cast, this epic mini-series traces the mind of a burgeoning madman as he begins his ruthless climb to power. From his emergence out of the ashes of World War I through the birth of the Nazi Party, acclaimed actor Robert Carlyle portrays Adolph Hitler in a performance that "conveys the depths of the tyrant’s evil" (San Francisco Chronicle). This DVD is good yet disappointing at the same time. This should have been nothing but the best of the best performances. Simply put, there are not enough of them here. Those that are included are true showstoppers, especially those by Clay and Bo, but too many have been left out including Clay's amazing rendition of Neil Sedaka's "Solitaire" which prompted the singer/songwriter Sedaka to say he would love to write and produce Clay's first CD. There are other omissions on this DVD from other finalists but the most serious and blatantly obvious omission is Tamyra Gray's beautiful, moving and haunting performance of "A House Is Not A Home." I'd like to know who the idiot is who chose not to put this on the DVD. I'll never forget a tearful Paula Abdul giving a standing ovation for that one. Did the people who put this DVD together not realize we would like to see more of the actual musical performances. I would have liked to see not only more of the performances by talents such as Clay, Kelly and Bo, but some of the other talented finalists as well including Kimberly Locke and George Huff. At least they were smart enough to put LaToya's amazing "Don't Rain On My Parade" in this collection. But, there should have been so much more. This DVD is a must for American Idol fans but it could have been so much better. That is my biggest complaint: There should have been many more performances and less of the forgettable nonsense.

American Idol - The Worst of Seasons 1-4 (2005) Review

American Idol - The Worst of Seasons 1-4 (2005)

For me the best part of American Idol is watching the horrible audtions at the start of each season. These poor souls actually believe they have what it takes to make it to the big time. The sad part is they REALLY believe they can make it, sometimes they have family members who encourage them. Some say that these have to be fakes, people can't be this bad. Well they can be, they can't be that good of actors!!
This DVD has some of the best worst performances from the first four seasons. You get William Hung, you get that guy singing "Like A Virgin", you get my personal favorite, Mary Roach. You've got to credit these people for at least having the guts to get up there and try.
Now for the part that's not so great about this set. Many of the songs have been cut, I would guess because they couldn't get the rights to them. By cutting out the songs, you don't really get to see why they are being so harshly judged. So the judges come off as being rude for no real reason.
Aside from that, this DVD is great fun. But again how many of us would have the guts to get up there ourselves??

American Idol: Season 6 Finale Performance Show - The Top 2 (2008) Review

American Idol: Season 6 Finale Performance Show - The Top 2 (2008)
Average Reviews:

Buyer beware. If you're like me and wanted to relive the finale show in its ENTIRETY, this DVD will absolutely NOT deliver. If you're looking for all the spots where the other contestants perform with celebrities, you're not gonna get it. If you're looking for the the wonderfully sweet African Children's Choir, (my personal favorite), it's not here. So by entirety, I mean literally everyone else who was on stage besides these two finalists. You won't see anything, and I mean ANYTHING except Blake and Jordan performing their songs, the judges critiquing them, and Chris Daughtry performing "Home." That...is...it.
I partially blame myself for not properly researching this DVD first, but I guess I just didn't expect that a DVD that claims to be the "Finale Performance Show" will have shaved off everything but 40 minutes worth. The runtime on this DVD was certainly deceptive. I suppose the 90 minutes runtime was both discs combined. What a disappointment. This finale show was one that had so many features I enjoyed so it was let-down just to see Blake and Jordan when I wanted to see everyone else too. Sure, some of the show was kinda stupid, but so much of it was just so entertaining and I wanted to see ALL of it.
So yeah...if you want JUST Jordan and Blake, then by all means, get this. It certainly does them justice I suppose. But if you want everthing else, best just hunt it out on the internet.

I admit, season 5 is the first season of "American Idol" that I started watching it. I ran out to buy this set after I saw the permiere episode of season 5. I was a little spectical at first but Im glad I bought this. Great for a American Idol beginner [like me.] or a avid watcher. I reccomend buying the best and worst together because you get a great bouns disc. This set is one of the best purchases I've made in a long time.Disc one
Disc one is "The Best of American Idol". It features all the winning Idols audtions {Kelly Clarkson,Ruben Studdard, Fantasia Burrino and Carrie Underwood} You also get the runner-up audtions {Justin Gurinni, Clay Akien, Diana DeGarmo and Bo Bice.} Plus featuretts on how the show is made, "Cuddles" a extremely funny {yet disturbing} short with Paula Abdul and Simon Cowell going on a date. "Your a Star" with montages of good and bad audtions. This disk is great if you want to see great Kelly Clarkson preformances. If you want to see bad audtions get the worst of.
Disc 2
Disc two is "The Worst of American Idol". With Paula Abdul taking us through, we have everyone's favorites. {Mary Roach, Tamika Bush, Scat Girl and more.} Not only will you get William Hung's "She Bangs" audtion but you also get a extended audtion and "She Bangs" proformed with dancers!!! Be sure to take asprin before you watch this disc. Winning and Fun, this disc will be your favorite.
Disc 3
Disc 3 only comes if you buy the "Best and Worst" together. If you are fans of season 4 this disc is totally for you. Packed with interviews with Carrie Underwood and Bo Bice, this disc is OK if you like Carrie. The interview with Carrie lasts about 42:00 and unless you are a mega Carrie fan you'll get a kick out of the interviews. Bo Bice is very funny. I am a big Bice fan and I was so happy to see the Bicer in action! His interview was very very funny. The best feature on the disc is the "Carrie and Bo return home" feature. This feature allows viewers to go in-deph to where Carrie and Bo grew up. {The most winning thing on the disc is watching Bo return home!}
This is the number 1 thing for an American Idol fan to have. You won't be able to live without it. The only thing that bugs me is Carrie's profomance of "Could've Been" by Tiffany isn't here. There could've been more Consentine moments here. I think you only get one preformance from him. That's ok, Buy this now!!
