Xs & Os is a hip romantic comedy that takes a humorously genuine look at post-college relationships. A circle of friends in San Francisco finds out the hard way that it s not all hugs and kisses in the game of love and that everyone needs a strategy to score. Bookish biologist Simon (Clayne Crawford - A Walk to Remember) lusts after Jane (Sarah Wright - The House Bunny), a blonde beauty who barely knows he exists. Against the advice of his womanizing best friend, Lorenzo (Warren Christie - TV's October Road), Simon decides to make Jane jealous by dating his lab partner, Trese (Judy Marte - Raising Victor Vargas). But every part of Simon's plan falls apart, trapping him between the pursuit of a hopeless dream and unexpected, real feelings for someone. Also starring Kel Mitchell (Good Burger, Kenan and Kel), Lynn Chen (Saving Face) and Jill Bennett (And Then Came Lola)

Audioslave (2003)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The price is right for this nice collection of videos from Audioslave, the super group featuring Chris Cornell of Soundgarden with Rage Against the Machine (minus Zack de la Rocha).
This DVD is worth getting alone for the "Show Me How To Live" video which cleverly samples the vintage '70s car chase film, Vanishing Point. MTV has yet to show this video -- they may have banned it because of the ending of the video -- and so this may be your only chance to get a really good copy of it.
Also included on the disc are the videos for "Cochise" (awesome video for this rockin' tune) and "Like A Stone." There is also bonus concert footage from when the band performed on Letterman ontop of the marquee of the Ed Sullivan theater.
If you're a fan of the band then this is a must-have item.

Witch Hunter Robin - Anime Legends Complete Collection (2004) Review

Witch Hunter Robin - Anime Legends Complete Collection (2004)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Witch Hunter Robin is a 26 episode Japanese animation series set in the near future in Japan. In this near future, individuals dubbed Witches who exhibit uncontrolled or psychotic manifestations of supernatural penomena are tracked and hunted by a shadowy international agency. The title character, a quiet teenage girl raised in a European convent who posesses the ability to mentally start fires, works as a hunter for the Japanese branch of this agency (in the STN-J). Some of the people she works with are up-front about their personal histories; others stay secretive. The first half of the series focuses on Robin working within the STN-J to hunt other Witches. Events halfway through the series lead to her becoming a fugitive; the storyline then delves deeper into several subplots concerning Robin's origins, the personal backgrounds of some of the secretive STN-J members, and the activities of the STN-J administrator.
This series is carried by its rich character development and its strong dramatic moments (which are neither forced nor overplayed). The characters, even those who appear in single episodes, are defined deeply in a way that makes the watcher care about them. The storyline slowly (but not too slowly) unfolds within single episodes and across the series as a whole. An air of tension or mystery often permeates the plot. Remarkably, this is all done with relatively little action (many action scenes merely feature people staring at each other while they duel with psychic powers) and with remarkably little nudity. This is a strong dramatic series that holds the viewer at the edge of his or her seat with plotline, not with cheap thrills.
The animation style compliments the storyline very nicely. Everything is cast in dark hues complimented with pale colors. Faces, clothing, and architecture are highly stylized; much of it looks gothic or industrial. A strong emphasis is placed on visuals, particularly visuals of individual faces. While the individual characters and scenery are drawn technically well, the animators did have some problems. Some scenes feature computer-drawn backdrops that look artificial, and cars for some reason are not drawn well when moving along the line of sight. Despite these drawbacks, though, the animation still looks great.
The series only has two problems. The minor problem is the soundtrack, which is somewhat lackluster. The major problem is the predictability of the storyline. In earlier episodes, when Robin is hunting other Witches, the writers leave little mystery as to who will be hunted at the end of the episode, even if it is supposed to be unknown. Often, the hunted Witch is the one character that Robin or someone else in the STN-J interacts with during the episode. The later episodes become less predictable, but a significant portion of the series's finale is disappointingly easy to infer.
I did not view all of the extras on the DVDs, but both the character/equipment overviews and particularly the cultural information were useful.
Overall, this is a very good anime series with excellent drama and characterization as well as a visually-pleasing animation style, although the predictable storyline and lackluster soundtrack inhibit it from being the best. I recommend it to any anime, sci-fi, or fantasy fan.

Dark Angel Season 2 Eng Dol Sur/french Dol/span Dol/1.33:1 (2000) Review

Dark Angel Season 2 Eng Dol Sur/french Dol/span Dol/1.33:1 (2000)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Overall, I enjoyed Season Two of DARK ANGEL, though I still prefer Season One. Despite the fact that I have a basic problem with Season Two, a large number of things were done very well. Like Season One, it was a well written, superbly produced, well executed season with some great new characters and some interesting new plot developments. Above all, Season Two represented a major improvement in Jessica Alba as an actress. In Season One, there were a host of scenes in which I was depressed by her rather flat vocal delivery and a surfeit of emotion at times when more was called upon. She is immeasurably better in Season Two, possibly a result of additional training, and certainly a result of being more comfortable in her role. She impressed with her athleticism in Season One, but she seems even more capable in her fight scenes and stunts in Season Two. She even seems more beautiful, probably the result of losing just a hint of baby fat (she was, after all, just out of high school in the first season).
The biggest problem I had with Season Two was the amazing lack of continuity with Season One. Like THE X-FILES or BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER or FARSCAPE, DARK ANGEL is a series that depends on long story arcs. That was true of both Season One and Season Two, but while each season had a great deal of internal narrative over the course of the season, not quite enough carried over from one season to the next for my taste. For one thing, a number of characters simply vanished. John Hurt, who was so prominent in Season One, leaves after a couple of episodes in Season Two (I suspect he would have returned in Season Three). Max and Original Cindy's coworker and friend Herbal vanishes with nary a word. The Asian police officer who was so prominent also fades from the scene. And the brilliant Stephen Hawking-like character (in that he is both brilliant and trapped in a wheelchair) disappears (perhaps because he might have possessed the knowledge to rid Max of the targeted retro virus that keeps her from having any physical contact with Logan) also vanishes into thin air. On the other hand, we are confronted with a host of new characters, so the feel of Season Two is much different from Season Two. Also, some of the carryovers from Season One have lessened roles. We don't see very much of Original Cindy or Sketchy in many episodes, as their onscreen time has been cut into by Alec and Joshua. On top of this, many of the emphases of Season One are altered to accommodate plot shifts. For instance, plot lines revolving around Agent White squeeze out many of the humanitarian and justice efforts by Eyes Only. Or take Max. In Season One much of the interest revolved around her attempt to find a satisfying life despite the rather unusual hand that fate has dealt her. She also apparently changed biologically from Season Two, although no specific mention is made of this. For instance, she had no moments where she needed a quick injection of Tryptophan (again, if her neurological condition was corrected during her incarceration at Manticore, no mention is made), and unlike Season One, she never had a period in Season Two where she went into heat (as a result of her feline DNA). These changes are all quite separate from changes wrought by plot development. There were just too many details that got pushed out of the show. Given the lack of continuity with Season One, I felt slightly uncomfortable with the predominance of Alec, Joshua, and White. These are not bad characters, but I didn't like to see more familiar elements squeezed out for the inclusion of the newcomers.
Nonetheless, Season Two was overall an exceptionally strong one. There were very few weak episodes and only one genuinely awful one the absolutely wretched "Gill Girl," which might be the worst single episode of the two seasons. The more one thinks about the latter episode, the worse it becomes (e.g., the transgenic gill people have gills and lay eggs to have offspring, like fish, but they look human and communicate by cetacean-like vocalizing, which would make them mammals). I love the way the writers keep painting the transgenics into a corner, and even Logan, so that by the end of the season the identify of all of the transgenics have been revealed, Eyes Only has been exposed and shut down, and Max and all of her friends have literally been driven out of life among non-transgenics. Max's situation has been radically altered by the end. One assumes that working at Jam Pony is now impossible (despite Sketchy and even Normal abandoning their prejudice against transgenics). No more evenings at Crash, no more motorcycling around the city, no more biking. Even her beloved hot baths might be impossible now. Clearly, big things were intended for Season Three.
One huge, huge reason for fans of the show to seek out the DVD set, even if they have it recorded on video, is the commentary. Although we sadly did not get a Season Three, the commentators reveal the major plot details that were anticipated. For instance, we know that Max was somehow the possible savior for the human race, but we are not sure how. What about Logan's ability to walk or Max's virus? They spill the beans. It doesn't make up for having a full season, but at least they resolve some of the larger questions that might otherwise be eating away at fans.
I am not privy as to why DARK ANGEL was cancelled. Perhaps the ratings weren't what they had hoped. Perhaps it was too costly of a show. In a way, the worst thing that ever happened at FOX was the enormous success of THE X-FILES. Ever since they have been looking for its replacement, and they kill all shows that don't manage its ratings. Along the way, they have killed off a string of superb shows, like FIREFLY, WONDERFALLS, and this one.
At some point FOX needs to realize that they are superb as a network at developing great shows, but fail miserably in making commitments to those shows. As it is, I am afraid to watch or allow myself to become interested in any show that appears on FOX. Why make a commitment to a show that they themselves won't make a commitment to? My feeling is that you development a quality product, and then stand by it and promote it until either the show slips in quality or there is a long term demonstrated lack of interest in it. FOX is to be commended for backing the creation of some great shows, but is to be condemned for failing to support them.

Braceface: Turning 13 - The First 13 Episodes (2005)
Average Reviews:

Braceface may be a pretty average looking show, but its outlook is just wonderful. This series doesn't avoid the real issues of growing up and explores them in a very honest, thoughtful manner, following the life of 13 year old Sharon Spitz. This first batch of episodes contains the reprocussions of Sharon's first peroid, her parents' divorce, a friend who shoplifts and the dangers of joyriding.
Before any parents start panicking about the subject matter, the morals of the show are in exactly the right place and it creates an environment where such issues can be discussed and mistakes can be learned from, rather than swept under the carpet. I wish there were shows this direct and genuine when I was younger.
This series only gets better with time and will likely never get a complete screening in America - most of those episodes I mentioned have been skipped over in the Disney Channel screenings, as if they are afraid of even mentioning that kids encounter such issues in modern life. It is exactly this sort of progressive attitude that encourages kids to make up their own minds about society, rather than being wrapped in cotton wool and unprepared when confronted with the reality of teenage life further down the line.
If you are even slightly curious about this show, check out this first season and encourage further releases. If this show can air uncensored on children's TV in Canada to acclaim and affection why should American audiences not be able to cope with it?!!

Everything You Wanted to Know About Gay Porn Stars (2009) Review

Everything You Wanted to Know About Gay Porn Stars (2009)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Everything" is an interesting concept for a series and its male subjects are fascinating. However, the entire series suffers from stilted filmmaking and a lack of a linear structure. Creator John Roecker lists a myriad of gay male porn stars in the credits but not one is given a clear narrative or arch-some appearing only once. While this may appear conceptual or artsy, essentially what it does is fail to allow viewers to emotionally connect to any of the subjects. Nick Piston is probably given the most empathetic presentation and we are allowed to connect with him when he is allowed to be vulnerable.
The documentary is shot with a handheld camera (it seems like one you or I might have for home movies) and is basically 232 minutes of static shots of actors answering questions, some relevant, some not. John is not a prolific interviewer and doesn't seem to follow any particular theme or line of questioning and often times asks really are pretty tangential and incoherent. He also handles questions about trauma and loss pretty casually.
The subjects of the film are really good sports, quite fascinating in their own right, and I applaud each and every one of them for their candor and vulnerability. They deserved better than this piecemeal project. The director clearly knows that the DVDs and series will sell based on its provocative nature, but it is pretty lackluster and has horrendous production values. Some of my issues with the series:
-if you are only going to do static shot interviews with a single camera on a subject, don't place shadows in their eyes. Part of connecting to a subject is seeing their eyes.
-the sound is pretty bad in parts, inaudible at others.
-there is really no vision, theme or through-line to the series. It seems random and haphazard. What is someone supposed to walk away with?
-if you are trying to humanize adult film actors, why must they all be interviewed with their shirts off?
-the "questions" that are asked seem to be off the top of the head of the director and pretty random-the series title is a little off base in that the focus is pretty narrow.
-the lack of film technique makes this series a snooze at points. At least take a walk with the subjects or offer a change of scenery. 3+ hours of the interviews is really trying on the viewer.
-the devotion of a whole episode to the Harlow Cuadra trial seems out of place and doesn't follow the arch of the show. It brings the series to a screeching halt. Plus, shots of the director standing over the sink or sitting outside on the phone while speaking to Harlow are mind numbing.
The second disc is much better than the first. The episode on drugs is very moving due to the openness of Nick Piston and him being given time to connect with viewers. The other subjects don't fare as well-coming across as what they hope not to, pretty whiny addicts. Its not their fault. Their interviews are truncated and the interviewer is not effective.
I support this film because I believe sex workers do deserve more respect in our country and do not deserve to be vilified and ostracized. However, I think this series was pretty poorly executed. Definitely worth a watch on netflix, but skip the purchase.

After watching the movie, you can figure out who they were talking about. Fazion Love was Suge Knight, Merlin wasw 2Pac, Rashaan Nall was BIggie, Toni Braxton was Faith and Sharissa was Lil Kim. The only person was missing was Puffy. If you know the story behind them and you have the movie.
Aside from that you have a very well done movie that shows how "fueds" can get started with simple mistakes. What makes the DVD worth getting is the Merlin Santana tribute. It's about the only one since he was a quick sentence in so called Black Magazines. The DVD is about hte only place where you will hear Merlin's rap skills since he was notable to release any of his four rap albums before his death.

I just got my copy of the Happily Ever After DVD and watched it with my Mom. I'm glad I got it! It is so rare to see real African American couples speaking so honestly about relationships. So often the only images of Black men and women are dysfunctional stereotypes of: pimps, players, angry Black women and hoochy mamas. So it was refreshing to hear bright, articulate conversation from Black men & women from all walks of life who are working together as partners and raising whole families together. Bravo! This film shows that the President and the First Lady are not alone in being an example of stable, loving married Black couples! Thank you to the film makers and the couples who participated.

Patsy Cline - Remembering Patsy (2002)

I've owned this video since it came out in 1993 and recently bought the DVD only because I've worn my VHS out - this video is truly a treasure to have! Cline's widower, Charlie Dick, and their children, Julie and Randy, have done an exceptional job putting this together - classy and heartfelt. It features Michele Wright reading Cline's personal letters to friends and fans, which somewhat narrates her life along with the interviews of friends, family and music legends. There are PRICELESS home videos, onstage/television performances(never before seen, including one of Cline singing "I Fall to Pieces" within a week of her death & THE Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts performance of "Walking After Midnight", her big break!), pictures that many fans haven't seen before and stories from family and friends that show a side to Patsy that some have never heard of - and some of them are HILARIOUS (especially Jan Howard's story of how she and Patsy met.) There are also a few interviews with current music stars, like Trisha Yearwood & K.D. Lang, who tell of her influence on their music and careers. Throughout the film, Patsy's music is played. Unlike the first video "The Real Patsy Cline", that Cline's family produced in the late 1980's, this film doesn't really focus on the plane crash, but more on her career. However, for other interviews with music stars (some deceased - Dottie West & Carl Perkins), as well as other performances & pictures not seen on this video allow me to recommend that DVD ("The Real Patsy Cline"). They're both worth having! You'll realize why she is the most hearlded female musician of the 20th Century! This is a must have for any Patsy Cline fan!

Belle & Sebastian - Fans Only (2003) Review

Belle and Sebastian - Fans Only (2003)
Average Reviews:

the dvd is a retrospective of one of the best bands of the last part of the 20th century, belle and sebastian. if you are looking into getting a primer on the band, i suggest you purchase "if you're feeling sinister", "the boy with the arab strap" the lazy line-painter jane box set before you delve your finances into this gem.
belle and sebastian fans are notorious for their cult-like obsession with the glasgow band, and this dvd is the perfect fix. it contains old footage of the band and connects them to newer performances to show how much the band has evolved and from 96 to as early as 98 how massive their music spread. the music they were making in 96, 60s pop with velvet underground riffs and subversive arty lyrics sung by the voice of a choir boy, might have taken their influences from bands past but they were doing nothing anyone was doing at the time.
the type of music they played weren't meant for doing promotional work or selling albums. it was for the sake of making music and "fans only" shows that side of belle and sebastian, the side that made them a mysterious group that garnered publicity by trying to avoid it. the popularity of the band also is a testament to the rabid fans across the world who spread the quality of pop music through word of mouth. this dvd is for them.
not only does it show an evolution of a band musically, but in front of the camera as the earlier videos show a shy, more twee-ish interviews which later videos show the band gaining more confidence and comfort in front of cameras, especially in a hilarious interview with some brazilian talk show.
the growth also shows in the music videos, which started out with hand-held super 8s and a casual approach that shows their sincerity, to much more expensive productions. the interesting part is that from point a and point b (where they are now), there is still a sense of excitement and fun and playfulness in their performances that are not only surprising but a pleasure to see in a world where bands generally get jaded after any type of exposure.
the one qualm (like a true idiot fanboy) of this dvd is that i would have preferred to hear the live audio of the sessions on 54th performance of "dylan in the movies" and the whole performance of stevie richards doing the beach boy's "darlin". but those are stupid complaints with what the brilliance of this dvd to this biased fan. highly recommend if you are a fan of this group.
note: after the credits, there is a bonus performance of "legal man" from the top of the pops where the monkey butler (from the "fold your hands child..." cd sleeve a/k/a stuart david) makes an appearance.

Here is the break down:
There is a total of 11 songs on this DVD: The songs include: "want, conflict, stupify, Fear, voices, droppin plates, Shout 2000, Down with the sickness, the game ", **plus** Bonus: "perfect insanity", and "A welcome Burden". Some of the footage is videos some is live performances. All songs on here are NOT clips, all these are full, and uninterupted. On both the videos and live performances, the sound and picture are very good qaulity. This was deffinitly made for DVD. Only complaint in this area is some of the older footage of the band is grainy, VHS quality, But the good thing is they do not show too much of this footage in the video. 95% of the video quality is awsome, and sharp. Besides music, they have plenty of backstage antics, and partying, similar to pantera's DVD. They also tell the orgin of Disturbed and do Bio's on each member, plus each member tells stories. It is a very well rounded DVD, it covers all corners. It is reasonably priced too. Ive watched this 3 times, so there may be even more hidden things on here that I have not yet discovered (although i think i got them all), but I can tell you it is over 2 1/2 hours of entertainment, plus after you have watched all the backstage footage and get tired of that they have an option to just play the songs on the DVD (unlike pantera's DVD). Enjoy!

Waylon Jennings: Nashville Rebel (2006) Review

Waylon Jennings: Nashville Rebel (2006)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First off, I'd like to begin by clearing up a couple misconceptions:
1) this is NOT the 1966 film of the same name;
2) there is NOT a 100-page booklet included.
Both these points have erroneously appeared on a number of online-retailer websites.
This IS a companion piece to the acclaimed 4-CD box set of the same title. The DVD menu opens with the flipping thru of a Waylon scrapbook...flipping a bit too fast to really study the pix but that's OK as most are included in the lavish 144 page book that comes with this DVD's big brother box set of the same title, also in stores now.
Here's what you'll see:
1. Only Daddy That'll Walk The Line
- from the Johnny Cash Show, 1970. Waylon had just won a Grammy for MacArthur Park and JRC congratulates him on that significant accomplishment. Waylon throws in that even JR ain't done that yet. Before launching into 'ONLY DADDY' they exchange the now-familiar comments about the time they shared a room at the Fontaine Bleu apartments in Madison -- where JR points out that during that era he felt that 'Waylon wouldn't ever amount to nuthin...'. He was sure wrong about that!! ;-)
2. Honky Tonk Heroes
3. Louisiana Woman
4. This Time
5. Slow Rollin Low
- trax 2-5 are from "Don Kirshner's Rock Concert", 1974. Sounds a helluvalot like the September recordings in Texas that same year. As opposed to the August 1978 'Lost Outlaw Performance' -which was attended exclusively by a very boring bunch of industry executives- these songs were recorded before a typical 70's crowd!!! :-)
6. Lonesome, Onry & Mean
7. Ramblin Man
8. It's Not Supposed To Be That Way
9. Amanda
10. Waymore's Blues
- now, for the real treat....when he was producing Waylon's 'DREAMING MY DREAMS' album, brother-in-law/outlaw Cowboy Jack Clement was also doing a bit of taping. We've previously seen only but a clip of 'LONESOME, ON'RY & MEAN' in Waylon's official vid-ography -- but now, we get the song in its entirety as well as the 4 others listed above. For those fascinated with Waylon's formidable geetar-pickin, you'll find the extended version of 'RAMBLIN' MAN' to be well worth the price of admission. I especially enjoyed 'WAYMORE'S BLUES' which has Waylon sitting on a park bench, playing his acoustic, alongside Lil Miss Jessi. There's some great banter between the two --- as well as a real good hint that there's more to come!!!
11. Luckenbach, TX
12. Mammas, Don't Let Your....
13. Good Hearted Woman
14. Are You Ready...
15. Are You Sure Hank....
- trax 11-15 are from the aforementioned 'Lost Outlaw Performance' taped at Opryland, 1978.08.12
16. The Conversation (w/ Hank Jr)
17. Never Could Toe The Mark
18. America
- while many have seen these music vids before, they are great examples of the post-crazy-year portion of this fabulous sampling of the 14 year period in Waylon's career covered by this disc.
19. Commercial for Waylon's Greatest Hits
20. Commercial for Outlaws album
- while not in chrono-order [?] the inclusion of these rare TV spots is a great way to finish off the collection...especially with so many of Waylon's die-harder fans not having even been born when they originally aired.
I'm still hoping that RCA/Legacy will release a deluxe version of the NASHVILLE REBEL music and vid set -- as they did with Cash's THE LEGEND. Considerably more expensive, the deluxe version of that title includes a 12x16 hard-cover coffee table book, additional music and vids as well as s limited edition litho and some other goodies.
Hummm, and wouldn't it be great if it all were packaged in a real, hand-tooled leather coat!!
Be sure and get this DVD as soon as you're able. I believe the retail is 12.99 and can be had for as little as 9.99 -- so be sure to shop around to find the best buy.

Hamtaro - Hamtaro and the Ham-Hams (Vol. 1) (2002) Review

Hamtaro - Hamtaro and the Ham-Hams (Vol. 1) (2002)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought my first Hamtaro DVD as a present for a friend who has a sweet tooth for cute little animals, and then got a copy to satisfy my own curiosity as an anime fan (plus the DVD was on special). I must say I enjoyed what I saw.
First of all, it IS cute, but not absolutely disgustingly cute - it's just a visual style that you quickly get used to.
Second, even though it is technically a "kids' show", it's not exactly mindless. Just as in more "mature" anime, there are story threads that continue through the series, the characters (while being stereotypes) have some complexity in their relationships, and, thanks to the normal human characters and good background art, there is a sense that the show takes place in (a nice part of) the real world, rather than some airy-fairy cartoon utopia.
Third, visually this show is superior to any US children's cartoon show I've seen recently, especially in the directing (i.e. frame composition & editing) and the painted backgrounds. And, finally, while I would have liked the option of Japanese language and subtitles, I think this DVD is that rare thing - a pretty good dub of a Japanese anime.
The great thing about Hamtaro is that, although it's for kids, it's not as "dumbed down" as some shows, which means that adults (parents and, er, *ahem* others) can enjoy it too, and parents don't have to worry about their kids being treated like morons.
The downside: with only three episodes per disc, you only get an hour for your money. Also, due to some quirk with the sound mixing, your ears may suffer from some fatigue after half an hour of Ham-Ham adventuring.
