The Last King - The Power and the Passion of Charles II (2004) Review

It's a terrific miniseries, I would highly recommend watching it.
But DO NOT buy this DVD - as another reviewer notes, A&E has cut an hour from the series for no apparent reason. Maybe they just think North Americans are to stupid to watch more than three hours of a series. Or maybe they wanted to save on costs.
Amazon.co.uk sells the BBC version, a full 240 minutes, in Region 2 and VHS. Or buy directly from the BBC itself. Just don't support this company in continuing to butcher series and then use their monopoly to shove it down our throats.

The Killers - Live From Royal Albert Hall (2009) Review

The Killers - Live From Royal Albert Hall (2009)

This doesn't get released till November 10th, 2009. But, I just saw it in theaters (it was in very select theaters on Nov. 5, 8pm). It's every bit as good as I hoped it would be. I was lucky enough to be near a theater that played this just a few hours ago, there were only 8 in the whole state of California that was playing this. Visuals were amazing, and the sound was superb. It's not easy to fill a place like Royal Albert Hall with as much intensity, energy and passion as the Killers have done. The stage was attractive and familiar if you've been to a Killers show. The shots were well filmed and the sound capture was good as well. I can't wait to get this and play the **** of my surround system.Update:
Received it in the mail the day the DVD/Bluray was released. Way to go Amazon!
My rating of 5/5 remains unchanged. This release is every bit deserving of 5 stars. I know it isn't clear on the Amazon page, but the Blu-ray version does NOT come with a CD. The DVD version does. However, that is more of Amazon's fault for not listing correctly, so I disagree with the reviewers who let this affect their review of the Bluray. Product reviews should pertain only to the product, IMO.
This Blu-ray is great because the concert itself was great. The Killers are probably one of the best live bands in the world today. This movie release brings the Killers concert experience into the home very, very well. The energy from the band is amazing and Brandon Flowers is left gasping for air at some points.Just buy it, you will not regret it.

Now The Killers know how many holes it takes to fill the Albert Hall. On July 5-6th, during their 8-country European festival tour, the multi-platinum VMA Award-winning, Grammy-nominated band performed two historic nights at the legendary Kensington venue. LIVE FROM THE ROYAL ALBERT HALL, The Killers' first official DVD release, is a spectacular 22-song live concert experience - filmed in HD (with `Fan's Eye View' alternative camera angle) and full 5.1 sound. Killers fans will appreciate how faithful LIVE FROM THE ROYAL ALBERT HALL is to the band's sight and sound onstage. Moreover, the songs cut across all four of the Killers' album releases, from their debut Hot Fuss ("Somebody Told Me," "Smile Like You Mean It," "Mr. Brightside," "All These Things That I've Done," "Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine"); to Sam's Town ("For Reasons Unknown," "Bling (Confessions Of A King)," "Sam's Town (acoustic)," "Read My Mind," "The River Is Wild," "Bones," "When You Were Young"); to Sawdust ("Shadowplay," "Sweet Talk"); and Day & Age ("Human," "This Is Your Life," "The World We Live In," "Joy Ride," "I Can't Stay," "Losing Touch," "Spaceman," "A Dustland Fairytale"). The DVD, who's running time is over 2 hours, is packed with bonus extras - starting with an additional five songs from the festival tour: "Tranquilize" (live at the Oxegen Festival in Ireland, July 12th); "Human" and "Mr. Brightside" (from Hyde Park in London on June 26th); and "Smile Like You Mean It" and "When We Were Young" (from the V Festival in August). A behind-the-scenes documentary, including interviews with crew and fans, rounds out the bonus content on the DVD. LIVE FROM THE ROYAL ALBERT HALL was produced by Jim Parsons and directed by Dick Carruthers, whose credits include The Who Live at the Royal Albert Hall (2000), and long-form live performance DVDs with Oasis, Noel Gallagher, Keane, Van Morrison, Kaiser Chiefs, Bryan Adams, Aerosmith, White Stripes, and many others. Elizabeth: The Acclaimed Saga of England's Virgin Queen (2000) Review

Elizabeth: The Acclaimed Saga of England's Virgin Queen (2000)

This History Channel four part documentary on the life of the famous Virgin Queen, Elizabeth I is an excellent addition to any history enthusiast's video library. Combining commentary with well-done re-enactments, this mini-series chronicles the rise and reign of the most famous queen in history, Elizabeth Tudor, daughter of King Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. This series follows her life from her childhood, where she was raised as a lady in a man's world, tossed about after the death of her father, to whom she was devoted, and ultimately spending her adolescence trying to fend off the advances of her step-father. After suffering through the reign on her virulently Catholic half-sister, "Bloody" Mary, Elizabeth finally ascends to the throne of England in time to fend off conspiracies, rebellions, and marriage proposals. We then follow as Elizabeth grows into a powerful and intelligent queen, first by putting down a rebellion instigated by Mary, Queen of Scots, then outmanuevering Spain's Phillip II and defeating his great Armada in the English Channel. Elizabeth's life is a fascinating and entertaining piece of history and this wonderful DVD series does it great justice. Highly recommended.

One of the most important rulers in history, Elizabeth I came to the throne at a time when England was under threat of annexation from abroad and collapse from within. When she died after a reign of 45 years, she left behind a nation protected by the greatest navy on earth and in the midst of a cultural explosion she made possible. Hosted by the world-renowned historian David Starkey (author of Elizabeth: The Struggle for the Throne) ELIZABETH explores the life and rule of the woman who gave her name to an era. A compelling blend of dramatic re-creations and incisive commentary brings alive the courtly intrigues and epic conflicts that shaped her reign, opens a window into the Queen's private struggles and convictions, and examines her monumental legacy. The four volumes in this epic set are From the Prison to the Palace, The Virgin Queen, Heart of a King and Gloriana.
