Child Star - The Shirley Temple Story (2001) Review

Child Star - The Shirley Temple Story (2001)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When this movie was first played on TV, I was so excited because I have been a major Shirley fan since I was 9(I'm now 21) but when I was watched I was highly dissapointed. The story is supposed to be based on Shirley Temple Black's autobiography "Child Star" and I only saw a handful of items that were actually taken from the book, the rest of it was just fluff. Plus they didn't go past Shirley's early teens when the book covers up until after she marries her second husband. They seemed to only want to focus on the happy aspects of Shirley's life but she and her family were not always so happy go lucky. Ashley Orr is horrific at playing Shirley-first of all she's too old to play 5,6,7 and even 8 year old Shirley and she was too sticky sweet, I know Shirley was too but not that sweet. I would have actually given this movie 0 stars if I had the option, it was horrible. So if you want to know the real story find her book "Child Star" and if you want to see the real Shirley work her magic on the screen go find any of her movies and stay away from this one.
"Bright eyes" , "Heidi" , and "Poor Little Rich Girl" are good movies to start off with.

Giant 600 Cartoon Pack (2008) Review

Giant 600 Cartoon Pack (2008)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For anyone familiar with other Mill Creek collections, this is pretty standard. It's a collection of 600 cartoons, of frequently middling video quality and unknown provenance (i.e. you may being seeing the version originally shown, or the version edited for TV 30 years later). The collection is indiscriminate--"Destination Earth" is a propaganda piece by the oil industry, for example--but most of them are fairly typical cartoons. If you have other cartoon collections, this probably overlaps them, if it doesn't include them. Many of these cartoons are available online from legit sources.
Being familiar with Mill Creek, my worst problem with this set was organization. There's no good reason to spread series across several disks, mixed in with other cartoons. No disk is filled by cartoons with one character or by one series, and one typical example, the Popeye cartoons, have 30 cartoons on one disk, 6 on another, and one more on its lonesome.
Is it worth it? If you have to have just about every cartoon released in these "public domain" cartoon collections in one neat box, then this is your box. If you don't have any "public domain" cartoon collections and want to see one, this will begin and just about end your collection. You might want to grab a few DVDs at a dollar store first, to see if it's to your taste. If you're looking for a decent collection of almost any of the Warner Brothers or Disney characters, then don't look here; little of their work is available here, and it's not the good shorts. If you're looking for beautifully restored film, likewise, you need to look at pricier, smaller sets; this set averages okay with some pretty bad stretches, and at no point has seen careful restoration.

Spies & Lies - 50 Episodes (2008) Review

Spies and Lies - 50 Episodes (2008)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In the United States, the new medium of television began mass broadcasting just a few short years after the conclusion of World War II and more or less coincided with the rise of Soviet domination in Eastern Europe in the modern historical period that came to be known as the Cold War era. So it came as no surprise that television, looking for topical subjects for entertainment purposes, would use this real world backdrop as inspiration for a number of early shows during the medium's first decade. Before the full blown television spy craze of the mid-1960s that was inspired by the James Bond films (notably "The Man from U.N.C.L.E. - The Complete Series," "I Spy - Season 1 and Mission Impossible - The Complete First TV Season," among others), television viewers were offered a number of shows, mostly non-network syndicated series, that dealt with the Cold War threat.
Mill Creek Entertainment's "Spies & Lies" 4-DVD set rounds up 50 episodes from a number of these 1950s era series, including Brian Donlevy's "Dangerous Assignment," Cesar Romero's "Passport to Danger" and Robert Alda's "Secret File U.S.A.," among others. A couple of the series represented, "Mr. & Mrs. North" and "African Patrol" aren't really in the espionage genre, but one can make the obvious comparisons with "Mr. & Mrs. North" and "Biff Baker U.S.A.," with both series featuring a husband and wife team battling domestic criminals ("North") or evil foreign agents ("Baker"). "Counterspy" is an unsold pilot that's well produced with an exciting story, and it's somewhat of a surprise that it wasn't picked up as a regular series.
The best series in this collection, in this reviewer's opinion, is Sheldon Reynolds' "Foreign Intrigue" a/k/a "Dateline Europe" which, like "Secret File U.S.A." (Amsterdam) was produced in post World War II Europe (Paris and Stockholm). Reynolds is arguably better known as the producer of the 1954 "Sherlock Holmes: The Complete Series" (also produced in Paris) with Ronald Howard and H. Marion Crawford, but "Foreign Intrigue" is one of the great unsung syndicated series of the early 1950s. Scripts are taut and the series has a genuine noir feel to it throughout. The series' leads were played by Americans in its various incarnations (Jerome Thor and Sydna Scott in the first version, James Daly in the second, and Gerald Mohr in the final version) and at least one episode from these various versions is included in this set. But the vast majority of supporting actors are English speaking Europeans including, among others, renowned Swedish actors Eva Dahlbeck and Ingrid Thulin. In addition to saving money on production costs by filming the series on location in Europe with European crews, the casting of so many European actors in this series adds greatly to the show's authentic feel. "Foreign Intrigue" ran from 1951 to 1955, and served as the basis for a feature film of the same name produced and directed by Reynolds in 1956, perhaps the first time that a theatrical film was inspired by a television series.
A number of these series have had selected episodes previously released on DVD by Alpha Video (with corresponding duplication of some episodes in this collection), and "Dangerous Assignment - Complete Collection" has been released by the Infinity Entertainment Group, but this set represents the first time that so many shows from the spy/espionage genre have been brought together in a single collection. To the best of my knowledge, this release also marks the commercial DVD debut for "African Patrol" and "Wire Service." The cover artwork for this DVD release shows Barry Nelson as "Jimmy Bond" from the 1954 "Climax!" television series' live presentation of Ian Fleming's "Casino Royale" (the screen debut of "James Bond"), but that episode is not included in this collection.
This set is comprised of episodes that are in the public domain and, as is the case with most public domain material, the source material is typically derived from worn, but watchable 16 millimeter prints. Those who have purchased other TV collections from Mill Creek Entertainment like "Best of TV Detectives 150 Episodes" or "Classic TV Westerns 300 Episodes" will have a pretty good idea of what to expect with respect to the audio/visual quality of this set. The series represented in this set include the following (a few are represented by just a single episode):
1. African Patrol
2. Biff Baker U.S.A.
3. Counterspy
4. Dangerous Assignment
5. Foreign Intrigue
6. Mr. and Mrs. North
7. Passport to Danger
8. Secret File U.S.A.
9. TV Reader's Digest
10. Vise, The
11. Wire Service
Despite the less than stellar source material, this is an enjoyable collection of (mostly) espionage series from television's early years and is highly recommended to fans of the spy genre and/or vintage TV fans, in general. My rating is closer to **** & ½.

Essential TV Western 150 Episodes (2008) Review

Essential TV Western 150 Episodes (2008)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
ESSENTIAL TV WESTERNS is a most interesting mix of 150 episodes of mostly 1950s and '60s television. Among the 18 series represented are the expected programs, like BONANZA, ROY ROGERS or ANNIE OAKLEY. Of especial interest are the shows that came and went with little fanfare, such as 26 MEN, RANGO, OUTLAWS, COWBOY G-MEN and TATE. Some, like "Outlaws" featured many famous guest stars during their brief run. "Rango" was a comedy starring Tim Conway and Guy Marks (he sang the spoof song, "Loving You Has Made Me Bananas"). "Tate" is a Civil War vet who lost part of his left arm. When he can't find work, Tate becomes a gunslinger. "26 Men" is based on the actual files of the Arizona Rangers. "Cowboy G-Men" stars Jackie Coogan (Uncle Fester in "The Addams Family") as a government agent.
The dozen DVDs in this collection are stored in gloss-coated heavy paper sleeves that are housed in a sturdy easy-access box. Transfer quality, although primarily dependent on source material, is uniformly good. For variety alone, this third edition of MILL CREEK's 150 episode box sets may be superior to its two fine predecessors. And that's no yarn, Pard!To complete your western TV show collection, all you'll need is CLASSIC TV WESTERNS, also from MILL CREEK ENTERTAINMENT. The Best of Johnny Carson and Friends (2008) Review

The Best of Johnny Carson and Friends (2008)

Before he became the king of late-nite TV, Johnny Carson hosted a self-named summer replacement series. Ten examples of that half-hour program are here, as well as samples of Johnny's quiz show, his morning program and the very early (1953) "Carson's Cellar."
NOTABLES--
"The Johnny Carson Show" aired Thursday nights at 8:30 on CBS from 6/30/55 to 3/1/56. The quiz show, "Who Do You Trust?" ran on ABC-TV from 1957 to '63; based on his performance here, Johnny was hired by NBC to replace Jack Paar on "The Tonight Show."
"Bobby Darin and Friends" was a pilot for a variety series the network rejected. It was written by Bud Yorkin and Norman Lear ("All in the Family").
"Shower of Stars" aired once a month on CBS-TV. The most frequent host was Jack Benny.
"The Milton Berle Show" was the Berle variety series that came after "The Texaco Star Theater."
"The Colgate Comedy Hour" had a long run (with rotating hosts) on NBC-TV in the 1950s.For more vintage TV programming, try the 150 episodes on MILL CREEK's ESSENTIAL FAMILY TELEVISION.CONTENTS of "Best of Johnny Carson and Friends":

Regardless, this is a treasure trove of old oaters that's certain to please fans of 1950s TV programming and westerns alike. COLLECTION CONTENTS--
