Harvey Toons - The Complete Collection (2006) Review

Harvey Toons - The Complete Collection (2006)

Animation Historian and self-proclaimed Famous Studios fan Jerry Beck posted this on his excellent Cartoon Brew web site:
"Sony Wonder has just released a boxed set called Harveytoons: The Complete Collection. 'Harveytoons' was the generic name affixed to the 1950s Paramount/Famous Studio cartoons (featuring Casper, Baby Huey, Herman and Katnip, Little Audrey, Buzzy, etc.) when they were originally syndicated to television back in the 1960s, after Harvey Comics acquired the TV and non-theatrical rights to the library. Classic Media owns the collection today and authorized this new set. I haven't had time to review the whole set, but what we have here are 52 episodes of THE HARVEYTOONS SHOW, a program I formatted for Harvey Entertainment and Fox Kids back in 1998. Unfortunately, this set does NOT constitute 'the complete collection' under any condition. For a variety of reasons we did not incorporate the entire Harveytoon library into the original series. Certain cartoons (particularly the Screen Songs) are edited. The fact that their were 78 episodes should tip you off right there. Here's the list of the original Fox Kids series. Sadly the contents of the DVD set doesn't even match up to this list (for example, episode 52 on the DVD is actually #53 of the series).
"Oh, how I wish someone from Classic Media had consulted with me. For one, I would have made sure to include certain cartoons (like the politically incorrect Chew Chew Baby) and it would have been fun to create some bonus materials. The good news is that the cartoons look nice and clean, the cult classic La Petite Parade is included (episode #40 on the DVD) and they've restored the original Jackson Beck vocal tracks to Buzzy The Crow."

Giant 600 Cartoon Pack (2008) Review

Giant 600 Cartoon Pack (2008)

For anyone familiar with other Mill Creek collections, this is pretty standard. It's a collection of 600 cartoons, of frequently middling video quality and unknown provenance (i.e. you may being seeing the version originally shown, or the version edited for TV 30 years later). The collection is indiscriminate--"Destination Earth" is a propaganda piece by the oil industry, for example--but most of them are fairly typical cartoons. If you have other cartoon collections, this probably overlaps them, if it doesn't include them. Many of these cartoons are available online from legit sources.
Being familiar with Mill Creek, my worst problem with this set was organization. There's no good reason to spread series across several disks, mixed in with other cartoons. No disk is filled by cartoons with one character or by one series, and one typical example, the Popeye cartoons, have 30 cartoons on one disk, 6 on another, and one more on its lonesome.
Is it worth it? If you have to have just about every cartoon released in these "public domain" cartoon collections in one neat box, then this is your box. If you don't have any "public domain" cartoon collections and want to see one, this will begin and just about end your collection. You might want to grab a few DVDs at a dollar store first, to see if it's to your taste. If you're looking for a decent collection of almost any of the Warner Brothers or Disney characters, then don't look here; little of their work is available here, and it's not the good shorts. If you're looking for beautifully restored film, likewise, you need to look at pricier, smaller sets; this set averages okay with some pretty bad stretches, and at no point has seen careful restoration.

Casper's Scare School: 12 Monstrous Episodes (2009) Review

Casper's Scare School: 12 Monstrous Episodes (2009)

While there are some episodes I'd love to see on this DVD the 12 episodes are among the best of the series. The show is far better than the movie it is based on. First vampire bully Thatch has a cavity and has to be convince to seek aid from a human dentist by Casper. Then zombie rights Mantha wants to prove how good Zombies are by winning Scare Day. This is followed by another Mantha episode where she's having trouble with her limbs but her new choices are even more trouble than their worth. Casper scares a building full of people by mistake and suddenly everyone in school is afraid him. Thatch and Casper are a team on do not laugh grim day but Casper isn't the problem when Thatch is the one with the giggle fits. When Wolfie studies the full moon powers everyone at school reverses personalities. The evil teachers show they have a soft side when his pet bunny gets loose. When everyone learn that Ra is a rich kid his kindness is taken advantage of. When Ra learns how cool he is when Casper possesses him his coolness goes to his head. the two so so episodes on the DVD are the ones which Casper experiment to bring food to life like Frankenstein monster doesn't work as planned and when teacher Mr. Burns feels like he not the dragon he should be decide to take on a medieval theme restraunt.
