These are not the usual but sites like the last resting places of the Prince of Wales and the Repulse, an ocean liner sunk by the Russians at the end of the war and even the flooded remains of a V-2 rocket factory in a cave. I won't spoil the surprise by telling you the rest.
If you found the dives on the Bismarck and the Titanic interesting, you'll love this. This is for anyone who loves sea stories, history and or archaeology.

It follows the story of wreck divers Ritchie Kohler and John Chatterton as they spend years identifying the wreck of a German U-Boat they were put onto by Capt. Bill Nagle of the dive boat "Seeker". Three divers, including a father and son team, were lost in this quest.
It travels from archives in the US to Germany where poignant stories of the U-869's crew are revealed.
A nice tour takes the viewer through a Type 9 U-Boat in a museum. The video also has some amazing high quality underwater footage taken by veteran wreck diver Bill Delmonico. This footage of the U-869 in spectacularly clear water conditions was shot long before the submarine wreck was actually identified. Strangely, Mr. Delmonico does not receive an artist's credit for this work.
As a wreck diver and charter boat skipper who has dived on U-Boat and other submarine wrecks for many years this video was doubly interesting to me. It should fascinate any diver or historian. Really does bring out enough stuff to scare you.
It is a must have companion to Robert Kurson's superb "Shadow Divers" and Bernie Chowdhury's sad account of the fate of Chris and Chrissy Rouse, "The Last Dive: A Father and Son's Fatal Descent into the Ocean's Depths". The Wreck Hunters: Dive to the Wreck of the USS Bass

The perspective is supported by both Biblical text and Egyptian texts describing the various events. This program provides a humanistic opinion of Old Testament events that involved warfare as told in a very logical sequencing of military thought and strategy. I highly recommend this program for anyone doing in depth study of the Old Testament or Torah.

(More customer reviews)With societies, as with individuals, it is often much easier for us to examine the mistakes of others than it is to take an honest look at our own. In both cases, however, honest examination is essential to making genuine progress. Aftershock succeeds in providing us with details on a topic of which most Gone-With-the-Wind-watching Americans are unaware: the atrocious violence and frequent chaos that followed Lee's surrender.
Anyone who has actually studied slavery and the slave trade as they existed in America (as opposed to simply treating them as unavoidable footnotes in U.S. history) is well-aware that it is difficult to fathom the cost of those institutions in human life, considering the shortened life spans, high morbidity rates, high infant mortality rates, etc., of those affected. On the other hand, we are aware of the literally millions who perished (some through intentional killings) in the Middle Passage and the 620 thousand Americans who died in the Civil War.
With all of the above in mind, we might be tempted to minimize the significance of the bloodshed that occurred during the Reconstruction era and the entire century of strife that followed the war; Aftershock, however, does an outstanding job of illustrating the former. This film tells the stories of a variety of individuals and organizations, including the Arkansas National Guard; ex-Confederate soldiers; state officials; African American troops; displaced Southern civilians; and one of our nation's oldest homegrown terrorist groups, the Ku Klux Klan. It also devotes a few (though far from enough) moments to the often overlooked role of Native Americans in the post-war years. It even touches on the frustration that some government officials felt with Andrew Johnson's calamitous approach to the nation's troubles.
This is one of the few documentaries on the years immediately following the war that I would consider incorporating into a larger class project.

My husband is about to leave his family again for another 18 month deployment. Whether you support the war or not you should support the soldiers that help to provide you with your every day freedom. This war is real and it has affected many people in many defferent ways. This movies helps to show that-it brought tears to my eyes. But it also made me proud to be an American and proud to be a part of a United States military family. Tastefully done but real. It makes you think twice about not sweating the small stuff......

Battles B.C.: The Complete Season One (2008) Review

(More customer reviews)The attempt to make the recreations appear like the movie "300" was idiotic at best (the 300 was about as accurate in portraying the battle of Thermopylae as Zena the warrior Princess was an accurate portrayal of ancient times). None of the recreations for these episodes had much character (they all seemed strangely alike) and most were ridiculously inaccurate. For example, why didn't the Romans have the scutum shields in the Caesar episode; why was Caesar portrayed so young; why did Hannibal have to look so much like the Scorpion King that he even lacked adequate clothing while crossing the alps: why did every commander in the series need to behave like Conan the barbarian; why didn't the Romans actually fight like Romans; and what's with the fights with two swords (one in each hand) as the soldiers pirouette about looking more like ballet dancers than the way these ancient armies actually fought.
Please History Channel, stop trying to recreate ancient military history based upon hideously inaccurate films such as The 300!

Last Stand of the 300: The Legendary Battle at Thermopylae (2007) Review

In contrast to the movie 300 (which was ok -see my review) this documentary is excellent. It is really a movie-like documentary with a lot of action.
Graphically it resembles a little the movie 300 since it uses a lot of computer graphics and non-realistic red looking skies. However, here Persians really look like Persians.
The content is excellent. Although I have read about the battle of Thermopylae from many different sources, I learned about things I did not know before and gained a more detail knowledge. However, like in the movie 300 here again Leonidas seems to be much younger than he really was by 480BC.
What I particularly liked was that the documentary focused both on the land battle of the Spartans and sea battle of the Athenian fleet. This really showed how brilliant and well coordinated the Allied Greek strategy was. Most other sources just focus on the land battle and pay minor attention to what happened in the flanking sea. The mastermind Themistocles is well represented and a decent length of the documentary is dedicated to him.
The Spartans and their society are accurately represented. They were not fighting for a new era of freedom which was at the time being brought forward by Athenian democracy. They were fighting to preserve their own, non-free un-democratic system and were hostile to the spread of democracy to other Greek city states. However, their last stand was not solely to seek "a beautiful death" but instead to cover the retreat of their fellow allied soldiers. Maybe, also to give an example from which the allied Greeks would stay united against the Persians for the sake of their sacrifice.
The sound tracks that accompany the scenes are excellent. However, they could have used them more often and they could have raised the volume a little too.
I enjoyed watching this documentary even more than the other two excellent documentaries on the Spartans (one from the History channel and the other by PBS).
Highly - I repeat highly recommended - to people interested in ancient history and battle strategies and warfare.

(More customer reviews)This 3-disc DVD set is an incredible documentation about military training in an elite force. It gives an insider's look into BUD/S class 234: of the students and of their no-nonsense, hard-core instructors.
BUD/S (Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL) training is the six months of basics, which includes PT phase, diving/water navigation, and weapons. Viewers get a glimps of what it takes to become a Navy SEAL. The cold, the endurance, the self-sacrifice, the will to win and succeed, and the dedication to the team.
My brother-in-law's father was a Navy SEAL, and after watching this documentary, I've gained greater appreciation and understanding of his experience. However, the DVD just shows a snippet of SEAL training. BUD/S is just the beginning!

(More customer reviews)CZ does a great job of giving you a good look at various firefights throughout modern history. Fights are recreated and intermixed with actual combat footage, and interviews with the guys who were actually on the ground doing the fighting. This is not your grandfathers war documentary. The show moves at a fast pace and is really focused more on the combat action itself. Similar to Battlefield 360, computer generated graphics supplement the narration and gives the viewer a good 360 degree view of the battlespace, which really offers a unique and clear perspective of how things unfold during a particular engagement. You get the entire series in single boxed set, so it's really a nice DVD series to own for any modern military history buff.

The DVD extras leave a little to be desired, but Ermey's sense of humor combined with his giddiness for the military equipment make this DVD alot of fun. An example of the witty sense of humor is the take off of MTV's cribs showing Ermey's command tent from the series. An ex Marine drill instructor combined with MTV style left me rolling on the couch. I recommend for anyone who wants to start learning about military equipment to people who have knowledge already. Semper Fi

Now, he's got his own show - Mail Call. In this great History Channel original, Gunnery Sergeant Ermey answers people's questions on anything and everything military. With a gung-ho, oo-rah spirit, the Gunny makes the whole thing a heck of a fun ride!
This DVD represents the best of Season two, and has the following seven(!) twenty five minute episodes:
Episode 15 (December 22, 2002) - Sgt. Ermey talks about American Civil War rifles, the first submarine-launched missile, naval deep sea diving, Bowie knives, and hedgechopers.
Episode 17 (January 19, 2003) - Marine electronic training tools, the Greek phalanx, the fastest plane (Russian Foxbat), the fastest tank (American M-18 Hellcat), and naval camouflage.

The History Channel Presents Engineering an Empire - The Complete Series (Collector's Edition) (2007) Review

(More customer reviews)The History Channel's Engineering an Empire series, containing six DVDs, focuses on the engineering and architectural triumphs of great (and not so great) civilizations. Each of the programs attempts to feature a society's engineering accomplishments as a prism through which to view its history and culture. Because of the arbitrary selection of societies and engineering accomplishments and the limited length of each program, the series fails to achieve this grand goal, but it is still both entertaining and to a limited extent educational.
All too often, the engineering accomplishments of the civilizations covered are limited to aqueducts, the use of pilings to support buildings in marshes and over bodies of water, the discovery of the corbelled arch, and military inventions like the Greek triremes and the ubiquitous catapult in its various forms.
Although actors are used extensively, they look like you expect real people of the time would have looked, a major advantage that the History Channel has over PBS, where the actors are always English and good-looking. A History Channel Persian or Mayan looks like a Persian or Mayan.
One area in which the History Channel excels is that of Computer-Aided Design, which they use to "reconstruct" buildings that either lie in ruins or have disappeared. The results are remarkable.
On the negative side, while the experts who appear are clearly highly knowledgeable leaders in their field, that field is limited to history; relatively few professional engineers or architects appear.
The selection of Peter Weller (of RoboCop fame) as a host was initially off-putting to me (despite constant references to his links to Syracuse University, he apparently only received an M.A. from that institution, later becoming an adjunct lecturer there in film), but over time I came to appreciate his enthusiasm and willingness to laugh at himself.
Programs on the first four disks include:

I question the inclusion of the Aztec segment which generally talks about their use of pilings to build their city on a lake. In contrast the Mayan segment, which appears in Vol. 3, is fascinating -- truly an advanced civilization.

Engineering An Empire, Vol. 3: Britain-Blood & Steel, Persians, & Maya-Death Empire [DVD] (141 min.)
Engineering An Empire, Vol. 4: Napoleon-Steel Monster, Byzantines, & Da Vinci's World [DVD] (141 min.)
The segment on Da Vinci's world has nothing to do with Da Vinci, focusing instead on Brunelleschi's building of the Duomo and the rebuilding of Rome in the 1500s. A separate segment includes a Syracuse University architecture professor discussing Brunelleschi's Pazzi Chapel. I only wish it had lasted longer.
The final two disks, which appear to have been made before the first four, are the flagships of the series, each containing one long, high quality program:
Engineering An Empire, Vol. 5: Rome [DVD] (94 min.)
More dramatic than the others, this program provides a nice overview of the rise and fall of the Roman Empire. If you're only going to buy one disk, this is the one. It features excellent CAD reconstructions of many of the most famous Roman engineering accomplishments.
Engineering An Empire, Vol. 6: Egypt [DVD] (92 min.)
Also of very high quality. Again, the CAD reconstructions are excellent. The experts, especially a woman professor from the American University in Cairo, are knowledgeable and enthusiastic about their subject. There's also an interesting add-on featuring Peter Weller talking about how he got into this line of work and why he enjoys it so much.
As indicated above, I question the inclusion of the Aztecs in this series, especially since there are other culturs that would have been more interesting (e.g., Babylon, India and the Incas.)
I did not experience the screen format problems that other viewers complain about, perhaps because my TV allows me to switch between five different formats, so I can use the best-fitting one.
