This seasonal special recalls the roasts and variety shows that were so popular at the time, packed with guests, gags and corny, prepackaged humor... But there's also the obvious sincerity that Johnny and June Carter Cash brought to their holiday cheer...
Filmed in their spacious ranch home, the show is conceived of as a big Christmas party, with their friends coming over for dinner and for a folksy, round-robin "guitar pull," where each guest taking a turn pickin', singing or telling a story. The performers include "Hee Haw" star Roy Clark and pop crooner Tony Orlando, who harmonize with Cash on a long medley of Stephen Foster classics, as well as Johnny's brother Tommy, superpicker Merle Travis (who picks a mean version of "The Cannonball Rag") and Johnny's pastor, Billy Graham, who closes the show with a grim Christmas parable about a rough-and-tumble mining camp that gets civilized through Jesus, but only after all kinds of violent, bloody behavior. (Yikes. What a buzzkill!)
The biggest surprise, though, comes from countrypolitan queen Barbara Mandrell, then at the height of her fame, who Cash remembers as a little girl who played steel guitar when he first met her... And sure enough, she sits down at the pedal steel and plays an impressive version of "Steel Guitar Rag." Who knew?? Although the pacing of the show is clunky, it was in keeping with the standards of live TV at the time, and it's a marvelous time capsule in many ways (especially the fashion: dig those cowboy duds on Tony Orlando!) Cash fans will definitely want to check this one out... students of the 'Seventies as well! (DJ Joe Sixpack - Slipcue)

(More customer reviews)First off, I'd like to begin by clearing up a couple misconceptions:
1) this is NOT the 1966 film of the same name;
2) there is NOT a 100-page booklet included.
Both these points have erroneously appeared on a number of online-retailer websites.
This IS a companion piece to the acclaimed 4-CD box set of the same title.The DVD menu opens with the flipping thru of a Waylon scrapbook...flipping a bit too fast to really study the pix but that's OK as most are included in the lavish 144 page book that comes with this DVD's big brother box set of the same title, also in stores now.
Here's what you'll see:
1. Only Daddy That'll Walk The Line
- from the Johnny Cash Show, 1970. Waylon had just won a Grammy for MacArthur Park and JRC congratulates him on that significant accomplishment. Waylon throws in that even JR ain't done that yet. Before launching into 'ONLY DADDY' they exchange the now-familiar comments about the time they shared a room at the Fontaine Bleu apartments in Madison -- where JR points out that during that era he felt that 'Waylon wouldn't ever amount to nuthin...'. He was sure wrong about that!! ;-)

- trax 2-5 are from "Don Kirshner's Rock Concert", 1974. Sounds a helluvalot like the September recordings in Texas that same year. As opposed to the August 1978 'Lost Outlaw Performance' -which was attended exclusively by a very boring bunch of industry executives- these songs were recorded before a typical 70's crowd!!! :-)

- now, for the real treat....when he was producing Waylon's 'DREAMING MY DREAMS' album, brother-in-law/outlaw Cowboy Jack Clement was also doing a bit of taping. We've previously seen only but a clip of 'LONESOME, ON'RY & MEAN' in Waylon's official vid-ography -- but now, we get the song in its entirety as well as the 4 others listed above. For those fascinated with Waylon's formidable geetar-pickin, you'll find the extended version of 'RAMBLIN' MAN' to be well worth the price of admission. I especially enjoyed 'WAYMORE'S BLUES' which has Waylon sitting on a park bench, playing his acoustic, alongside Lil Miss Jessi. There's some great banter between the two --- as well as a real good hint that there's more to come!!!

- while not in chrono-order [?] the inclusion of these rare TV spots is a great way to finish off the collection...especially with so many of Waylon's die-harder fans not having even been born when they originally aired.
I'm still hoping that RCA/Legacy will release a deluxe version of the NASHVILLE REBEL music and vid set -- as they did with Cash's THE LEGEND. Considerably more expensive, the deluxe version of that title includes a 12x16 hard-cover coffee table book, additional music and vids as well as s limited edition litho and some other goodies.
Hummm, and wouldn't it be great if it all were packaged in a real, hand-tooled leather coat!!
Be sure and get this DVD as soon as you're able. I believe the retail is 12.99 and can be had for as little as 9.99 -- so be sure to shop around to find the best buy.

I had the opportunity to record at Clementvision studios @'89 or so with Chance Martin who was executive producer of the old Johnny Cash show on ABC. Chance appears on this DVD as the voice of Shakespeare. Engineer David Ferguson whom i worked with on those sessions also appears.
This DVD brought back a lot of memories and gives a good insight behind the scenes with some of Nashvilles heaviest hitters. Also on this DVD is a rare glimpse into a side of Johnny Cash that was seldom scene by the general public. It is said that "Cowboy" was able to bring out the funny and whimsical side of Johnny that a lot of people didn't get to see. This is a MUST for any real Johnny Cash fans.

(More customer reviews)The Holy Grail has surfaced at last! If you are reading this, you love Memphis Soul, so what are you waiting for! Buy this disc! The packaging is great, with a nice booklet of over a dozen pages written by the author of Soulville. Considering this is old black and white footage and that one cannot undo poor camera choices (such as ridiculous rapid zooming in and out during one Sam and Dave song), the quality is quite good. The edits done to preserve continuity are essentially seamless and never detract from the program. Sometimes the microphones are overdriven a bit, but there is nothing that can be done about that now, and it isn't that bad. So, from a technical and packaging standpoint, very, very good.
The performances are way cool. Booker T and the MG's and the Mar Kays warm things up and it is great to have some time to focus on their talents. Arthur Conley perfoms "Midnight Hour" with co-author Steve Cropper, which is kind of neat, but I really enjoy his second performance even more. Eddie Floyd's perfomance is brief and fairly good. When Sam & Dave are introduced, the show really takes off and the band steps it into high gear. I personally purchased this just to have a chance to realize a dream - seeing Sam & Dave perform. They do not disappoint! To me, their 4 songs (one is slightly abbreviated) are the highlight of the show. We have all seen Otis and know how amazing he is, but footage of Sam & Dave is unheard of. I suspect many of you, like me, were more curious about this aspect than the Otis portion of the show, because we all know Otis will deliver, and he does. All one need say is that Otis performs and you know it is great. Still, my personal highlight is "When Something is Wrong With My Baby" by Sam and Dave. Watch the funny interaction between Duck Dunn and Dave. The band is incredible all the way through. I was still on the edge of my seat the second time through the show! If you love Stax, this might move you to tears! BUY IT!

(More customer reviews)By the mid-1970s, Johnny Cash was a veteran TV performer, and new how to keep a show humming. This disc follows an earlier show from 1976 that featured Johnny and June Carter Cash hosting a folksy, round-robin "guitar pull" in their spacious Tennessee ranch house.
The following year, Cash had a much glitzier, punchier production, trading his funky ranch home vibe for a big, shiny soundstage, decked out with a gigantic golden holly wreath and twenty-foot tall panels of frosted-glass snowflakes. This show, which broadcast on November 30, 1977, was also a tighter show, mainly featuring the seasoned cast of Cash's long-running road show: June Carter Cash, the reconstituted Carter Family, Carl Perkins and the ever-jovial Statler Brothers, and another appearance by Roy Clark, who helped anchor the previous year's Christmas show. Although there's plenty of holiday music and seasonal cheer, there's also a wealth of secular music -- Johnny and June sing a duet of "Darling Companion," and the second half of the show is devoted to a tribute to Elvis Presley, who had passed away a few months earlier. Along with Carl Perkins, Cash hosts other buddies from his Sun Records rockabilly years -- Roy Orbison is in fine form on "Pretty Woman," while Jerry Lee Lewis tears it up on a modernized "Whole Lotta Shakin' Going On," then slows things down for a sentimental reading of "White Christmas." Surprisingly, the Carter Family is kept mostly in the background -- Mother Maybelle wasn't in the show at all -- while Anita and the sisters only sang as part of a larger chorus. All in all, this is a lively, well-paced TV show, with a very sincere religious emotional core, sure to be a delight for Cash fans and country Christmas enthusiasts everywhere. Recommended! The Gospel Music of Johnny Cash (2007) Review

(More customer reviews)This documentary hosted by Dan Rather looks into John's reason for singing in the first place and how he was able to use his music to spread God's word. There are interviews to be sure, Marshal Grant, John Carter Cash, and more, but most importantly they let John's music play a big part of this DVD. Far too many of these retrospective, documenteries, interrupt the musical performances with interviews, not this one. The performances stand on their own, with few exceptions. The perfomances start with an old black and white performance that can be found on other DVD's, but that's it, later perfomances have him and with June performing several songs from the Billy Graham crusades. Jewels, everyone of them. It also has photos of John at June's funeral and ends with a still photo from John's own funeral. This is THE BEST documentary I've seen on John (it doesn't cover all aspects of his life, just concentrates on his gospel music and his relationship with God). Don't let the use of the term "documentary" scare you from this DVD, the concert performances are great and the songs (for the most part) are uninterrupted. You may never see these performances anywhere else, this is worth owning.

The Johnny Cash Show: The Best of Johnny Cash 1969-1971 (2007) Review

I caught a sneak preview of this amazing disc on my local PBS station in August of 2007, and it was one of the greatest things I had seen on television in a long time. Johnny Cash's prime time television show aired from 1969 - 1971, and featured both prominent rock and country artists of the day. Groundbreaking television for sure, considering at the time that most rock artists were associated with the peace, drugs, free love and the anti-war movement by a conservative segment of American society, just when the war was really starting to sour. Filmed live at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee (with a few exceptions), in front of a mostly Southern country music audience, all the artists seemed to be warmly embraced by the crowd, with Johnny Cash's blessing and support. The first hour consisted of rock and popular music performers that Johnny Cash was an admirer or fan of, including Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, Neil Young, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Neil Diamond, Carl Perkins, and Jerry Lee Lewis. The highlight was Derek and the Dominoes featuring Eric Clapton, and following their performance none other than Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash himself joined Derek and the Dominoes onstage for a raucous version of Perkins' Matchbox. Simply amazing.
The second half was Johnny himself performing solo, with his wife June Carter Cash, and with the Tennessee Three. Prominent country artists also featured were George Jones, Tammy Wynette, a young, short-haired and beardless Hank Williams Jr., young Waylon Jennings, Loretta Lynn, Merle Haggard, and Charley Pride (possibly the only black country artist ever). These are only the performances shown on the PBS special preview. There were literally hundreds of great performances on this show over its two year run. There's no lip synching nonsense here. Every artist actually performing and singing live. This is priceless television and I would highly recommend it to anyone who is a fan of any of the artists I mentioned. You will not be disappointed. It won't be available until September of 2007, and I will most definitely be purchasing it.

The Best of the Johnny Cash TV Show (2007) Review

(More customer reviews)Oh how young they looked and how few of these stars are still with us today. Johnny Cash was the true Nashville rebel, bringing to the country music stage for his TV show such hippy-dippy heroes as Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Creedence Clearwater Revivial, Joni Mitchell and Eric Clapton in their prime along with traditional country stars of the day. The Cash show aired from 1969-1971, right in the middle of the most exciting, dynamic era of America popular culture. The Cash "larger-than-life legend" has always eluded me, however. I never liked his constipated vocals, the strange haunted look, or some of the twitching mannerisms. I always got the impression the years of drug abuse in the '60s did some lasting damage. The whole Man In Black routine seemed like a cheap gimmick as well, or worse, a sort of messiah complex. Why should Johnny Cash have the weight of the world on his shoulders? (Even Billy Graham is able to wear a blue suit.) So I purchased this video for the guest stars, and they're great! A heavily made-up Bob Dylan does "I Threw It All Away" and you can actually understand his vocals. It's a definite highlight. Neil Young does "The Needle And The Damage Done." A bright-eyed Kris Kristofferson does "Loving Her Was Easier (Than Anything I'll Ever Do Again)." You also get Loretta Lynn, George Jones, Waylon Jennings, Roy Orbison, Merle Haggard, Ray Charles, Carl Perkins, Tammy Wynette and the Statler Brothers. The most interesting performance for this reviewer has to be Eric Claption fronting Derek And The Dominos on the countryish song "It's Too Late." This early 1971 performance was probably one of the last times Clapton was able to perform on stage before his heroin jones put him out of commission for a while. (Check out his tragic showing with George Harrison at the Concert For Bangladesh later that year.) Though it was taped in Nashville, the Cash show had a decidedly urban look, with bright, garish, psychedelic stage sets that really catch the eye. This video has aired on PBS stations across the country but it's certainly worth owning on DVD.
