I tell you what...get this if you're a fan of the Hulk alone. That in itself is reason enough to see this movie. I have forever loved all that the Hulk represents and how he rolls. But he about lost his mind in this movie! I loved it!!! Beyond that, good plot, beautiful fantasy cartoon babes abound, and as a Marine, I appreciated how Captain America and the military were portrayed as they went into battle against Nazis and space aliens in WWII. C,mon...space aliens, dream babes, Nazis, and the Hulk...what're you waiting for? Relax the literary critic inside you and have some fun. Go. Rent.

Power Rangers: Operation Overdrive, Vol. 2 (2007) Review

Power Rangers: Operation Overdrive, Vol. 2 (2007)

The second DVD in the 15th Season of Power Rangers continues to impress right where the first one left off. "Power Rangers Operation Overdrive - Volume 2: Torhu Diamond," continues with episodes 7-12 (out of 32 total,) and is on part with the first Volume. Once again, each episode contains Chapter stops placed precisely where commercial breaks were in the original Cablecast/Broadcast episodes, features full opening and ending credits for each episode, and continues to keep the theme of the extras consistent.
As with the first volume, there's a little something for everyone, fans will be happy to have 100% unaltered episodes on DVD -- there's no typos on this disc or episodes differing from their original airings either which should please older fans and collectors. Parents will be pleased to find that for $15.00 they get six episodes and two bonus features, making this disc well worth the money spent. Also continuing the theme from the first disc are the bonus features, which include a set of shorts on the Ranger Arsenal, replacing the Bios on the previous disc, and the second level of the interactive DVD Game which children will probably like, especially if they've played the first level on Volume 1. (The game makes more sense when you play it in order, although this isn't required.)
Again, the technical quality of the DVD truly shines, as the transfer from digital tape to DVD is pristine, placing the first two volumes of the show on par with each other, and with the Power Rangers S.P.D. release. The menu theme of the Operation Overdrive Command Center is retained from the first Volume providing continuity between the two discs, and fans and DVD collectors alike will appreciate the fact that Disney has accounted for its wide fan base and included promotional materials for films such as "The Jungle Book," and "National Treasure," in its extras of titles coming soon to DVD/Theaters.
What's more, as with the first volume, this disc has switchable (on/off) English Subtitles (mismarked as "Closed Captioned,") for the hearing impaired.
For those who may not be privy to the plot of the 15th Season of Power Rangers, our heroes set out to recover the "Crown of the Gods," known as the Corona Aurora, which was discovered by the Red Ranger's father, an archeologist, and accidentally used to release two evil brothers. Soon after more evil aliens start showing up at earth, all trying to claim the Corona Aurora as their own, and the five jewels that go with it. Disney was smart to use a plot involved five jewels, rather than four or six, or any other combination. The reasoning behind this statement is that the first six episodes cover the first "Jewel Quest," the second six episodes cover the second "Jewel Quest," and I'll let you figure out how the other Jewel Quests will play out. The show has also gotten smarter over the years, plots aren't resolved in 22 minutes all of the time, some aspects of a particular Jewel Quest may take three or four episodes to be truly resolved, others may be resolved within a few minutes, or by the end of the episode. This is a series that requires patience for the full enjoyment of what it has to offer, but can also be enjoyed in single episode viewings.
Again, whether you're a die-hard adult fan whose been with the show since the Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers, a DVD collector looking for a first, a child looking for his or her favorite show on DVD, or a parent looking for a show to entertain your children on a long car trip or a rainy day, this disc will not disappoint. I recommend purchasing Volumes 1 & 2 together to save money via Amazon's Super Saver Shipping, and to be ready for Volumes 3-5.
Included on this disc are the following six episodes:
7. At All Cost
8. Both Sides Now
9. Follow the Ranger
10. Lights, Camera, DAX
11. Face to Face
12. Face to Face II
If you're still looking for more after buying Volumes 1 & 2 which contain the first 12 (out of 32) episodes, Amazon has Volume 3 available for pre-order which is scheduled to contain episodes 13-18, and will be followed shortly by Volumes 4 & 5 which will complete the 32 episode series.

The Incredible Hulk (Widescreen Edition) (2008) Review

The Incredible Hulk (Widescreen Edition) (2008)

"THE MADDER HULK GETS, THE STRONGER HE GETS". Apparently, ol' Jade-Jaws has been rebooted for the screen under the moniker; "Incredible Hulk" with a new director; Louis Letterrier, a new script by Zack Penn and has a new lead actor in Edward Norton. To be honest, I'm one of the few who appreciated Ang Lee's "Hulk", appreciated but didn't love. Sure, it was too moody, nary a smile on anyone's face, full of human angst and fake looking CGI, but I thought it was reminiscent to the comic book when Paul Jenkins was at its helm. 2008's version of the Green Goliath trumps the 2003 version, with a different origin, more action and the CGI is a vast improvement over its predecessor. No, it is not a sequel to the 2003 film but a re-imagining that has close links to the "Hulk" (except for the color) who appears in Marvels' "The Ultimates" comic book.
Bruce Banner (Edward Norton) is hiding out somewhere in South America, looking for a cure for his gamma-induced affliction, trying to keep his temper in check, keeping a low profile and avoiding a certain General Ross (William Hurt) who intends to make an army of super-soldiers from his own D.N.A.. After being pursued by a team led by Emil Blonsky (Eli Roth), Banner returns to America to pursue a cure and asks longtime love Betty Ross (Liv Tyler) for her help in finding a man named "Mr. Blue" who may be able to cure him of his gamma-powered alter-ego. Blonsky is hot on their trail and asks Ross to experiment further with the workings of gamma radiation and cellular manipulation with him as the guinea pig. Blonsky is a man who wants power--at any cost.
The origin of the Hulk has been re-written from its 2003 version. Banner is a scientist who is unknowingly performing experiments on gamma applications to try to replicate a serum based on a World War II super-soldier serum (Captain America anyone?) that apparently got out of hand. Ross wants it as a weapon (no surprise) and Banner is the victim. Readers of Marvel's "the ULTIMATES" may see some similarities and may applaud this move. It was a good move to incorporate a new script to this 2008 film and Louis Letterrier seems to be the right man for its directorial duties. The script by Zack Penn in the hands of this director still has the usual touches of human drama and a moody atmosphere but at a better pace than Lee's rendition of ol'greenskin.
The CGI effects is a step forward from its previous incarnation; an improvement but still not perfect. The Hulk looks more ferocious and feral than the 2003 version and the moments where he says "Hulk Smash" still puts a smile on my place. I was waiting on the line "Hulk is the Strongest one there is" but I guess this would ruin the film's mood, and become a bit too comical. The battle with the Abomination is the film's main draw. The fight is fierce, savage and above all, very hard-hitting. You feel the impact of the blows, and the snarls add a lot of animal-like ferocity. There is also quite a decent number of action sequences dispersed throughout the film. Banner's encounters with a Black-ops team in the first 20 minutes and with a small army contingent helps the film's pace. Hulk smashes cars, humvees, and crushes almost everything in sight; Hulk also "claps" with such devastation. There are also moments that put Hulk's relationship with Betty in the spotlight and the savage monster is truly only savage when provoked. Hulk gets to display some emotion and sensitivity in the presence of Betty. Nice touches, truly reminiscent of the comic book.
Edward Norton's Bruce Banner may well be a little underdeveloped but by now, the film is probably relying on the fans to know what he is all about. Banner has that nerdy look but at the same time, strong and determined. Banner trains in the Brazilian style martial arts to try to control his anger by discipline. I almost wanted him to say: "Hulk knows Kung fu" but thankfully that didn't materialize. Norton gives a strong performance as our tortured scientist, I rather thought that he displayed the right emotions when one is afraid of losing himself. William Hurt is an outstanding General "Thunderbolt" Ross, his character is reminiscent of the other ruthless ones, Hurt has played throughout his career. Ross is a man of duty and has that `someone needs to get their hands dirty' attitude that gives his character a lot of depth. Liv Tyler is on par with Jennifer Connelly's Betty Ross. She's the anchor that pulls Bruce through the hardened moments.
While the film has the tendency in becoming a bit overlong and fall to the pitfalls of too much melodrama and excessive display of human angst, the film has some cleverly placed bits of satire that assists the film's pace. You wouldn't believe Banner's attempts in communication in Portuguese; "..you wouldn't like me when I'm hungry." Stan Lee and Lou Ferrigno makes cameo appearances which also add some subtle bits of humor.
Ultimately, "Incredible Hulk" is a success and an effective reboot from Ang Lee`s 2003 version. The film managed to stay focused in its context of a "Dr. Jekyll-Mr. Hyde" formula and the same time delivered a cleverly action-filled popcorn film that delivers the goods. There are hints of an underlying plan with Robert Downey's guest appearance and the hints of a "super-soldier" does give comic book fans something to look forward to. The film is a great comic book adaptation and it comes highly recommended from me who has seen Jade-Jaws' ups and downs since 1979.

The Incredible Hulk (Animated Series) (1996) (2003) Review

The Incredible Hulk (Animated Series) (1996) (2003)

This disc showcases the first four episodes of what I believe was a 13-episode single season (which wasn't followed up). The art is passable, above the level of GI Joe and Transformers, and closer to the animation in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Ghostbusters or (if you remember this) Dino Riders series. The episodes are self-containing and don't really branch out and connect to other episodes (other than the two-part "Beast" story). There are other supporting characters other than the Hulk shown in this series, which makes it an interesting mix.
The extras are definitely worth your while. The 1966 clip is hilarious, especially in comparison to the recent movie and this DVD. Pay attention to the inappropriately paced and melodied opening theme song and the art, basically stills with large "Pow!" and "Bam!" type sound effects layed over, or shifting eyes. The trivia and the Stan Lee Soapbox should keep you entertained for a good 15 to 25 minutes, which also goes for the interview with writer Peter David.
At the end of your viewing session, you'll have a more complete understanding of what the Hulk is about and how things about the Hulk have evolved, kind of like a mini-documentary. Recommended for Hulk fans, 80s thru 90s cartoon afficionados, but not so much for anime fans or those who were disappointed by the live movie and have only a little Hulk knowledge.
