Shark Week: The Great Bites Collection (2008) Review

Shark Week: The Great Bites Collection (2008)

Every year the Discovery Channel does their "Shark Week" thing; a series of shark-themed shows. Now they've released a new collection of some of these shows that also acts as a great sampler for the network's programs (well, at least those that don't center around blue-collar jobs, like "World's Deadliest Catch").
You get episodes of "Survivorman", "Mythbusters" and "Dirty Jobs". So far I've only watched the "Mythbusters" and "Dirty Jobs" episodes.
The "Mythbusters" one is a 90 minute special and includes things like a mechanical shark and a robot dog with some interesting secretions...
For "Dirty Jobs" you get to watch Mike Rowe and friends as they head up north. Way up north. So far north that you can't go too much farther north without going south. They head out there in search of an elusive shark that may be eating seals.
You also get "How Not to Become Shark Bait" (lesson one, I'm guessing, don't work for the Discovery Channel), "Mysteries of the Shark Coast", and "Day of the Shark".
Bonus features include some "Dirty Jobs" stuff, as well as something called "Summer of the Shark".
Overall a good little package at quite a good price!

In short, BUY THIS ITEM! This takes some of the best episodes from seasons 5 and 6, including an episode debunking myths that the moon landing was actually a fake that was nominated for A FREAKING EMMY, and gives them right to you for a price well worth it. Not having cable for the past 4 years now, collections like this have been growing in my DVD library for some time, and this is one that I can definitely see myself watching over and over. Jamie and Adam are amazing at what they do, and perfectly toe the line between science and entertainment. You'll find yourself correcting people at parties with, "Well, from what I saw on Mythbusters..." in no time!

Mythbusters is a great show for everyone! The hosts, along with their team, crack myths and urban legends using science. This DVD Set is a great value for the money. 4 Discs for $20. I also found it was much cheaper than the Boxed versions sold on the discovery channel site which retailed for $50 each. The show is funny and you will learn from it whether you realize at the time or not. Great for kids, teenagers, and adults. I feel like it is a parallel to the fun science shows of my youth like "Bill Nye the Science Guy".

Ever wonder if human teeth could stop a speeding bullet? You're about to find out! Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage are back to test a host of the most insane and dangerous myths ever dreamed of. No theory is safe from the scrutiny of the MythBusters, who take on the Hindenburg disaster, Tesla's Earthquake Machine, the Mentos mint-Diet Coke Internet myth and much, much more! From the wacky (can a hurricane blow the feathers off a chicken?) to the death-defying, Hyneman and Savage go where no reasonable people have gone before in separating the reality from the ridiculous! EPISODES: Helium Football: Field test helium-filled footballs to find out if they stay aloft higher and longer than regulation air-filled balls. Then face a firing line to discover the bullet-halting capability of human teeth. Bullets Fired Up: See if celebratory bullets shot into the air can kill when they return to Earth, and find out whether low-grade vodka can be transformed into a top-shelf spirit with an ordinary household water filter. Killer Whirlpool: Literature is filled with nautical tales of ships being sucked to deathly ocean depths by killer whirlpools, but could such a thing really happen? Then discover whether snowplows can blow a car off the road or if that?s just a snow job. Crimes and Myth-demeanors 2: Test the most high-tech home alarm systems on the market, including stripping down to birthday suits, getting sprayed with dry-ice and donning a Big Bird-like yellow rug to evade burglary detection. Deadly Straw: Test burning barnyard myths like whether a hurricane can blow the feathers of a chicken.Earthquake Machine: Take on Nikolai Tesla, one of the greatest scientists and inventor of all time. Unbelievably coming up with a working prototype of Tesla's Earthquake Machine, the pair put a California bridge to the test.Diet Coke and Mentos: Inspired by an Internet myth, the MythBusters pair various sodas and candies together until they create the most explosive cocktail possible. Then: Can putting a postage stamp on a helicopter's rotor blades send it into a tailspin? Anti-Gravity Device: Celebrate the magic of the holiday season by loading strings of hot lights on a Christmas tree to see how long it takes for the tree to burst into flames.Firearms Folklore: Test the likelihood that a criminal's bullet could hit and then jam the chamber of a policeman's revolver and whether a sniper could kill another by shooting straight down the enemy gun scope.Holiday Special: Yodel to an avalanche in this special episode, then exhaustively test for the best Christmas tree-water cocktail to keep the needles from falling off.Pirate Special: Test period swords, cannons, guns and the laundry-cleaning capabilities of grog.Hindenburg Mystery: It's generally accepted that the hydrogen keeping the Hindenburg afloat sparked the infamous inferno, but could other chemical reactions actually have caused the blaze?Underwater Car: The team willingly recreates many people's worst nightmare: being trapped in a car submerged in water after a crash.

I'm a filmmaker, so this seemed like the perfect gift for me to get for the un-buyable geek dad. Though, I'll admit, my dad was rarely surprised by the myths busted and figured them out before the answer was revealed (*sigh* engineers...). Despite that, he seemed to enjoy the special. I'm glad I purchased this Mythbusters for my dad.

Mythbusters: Big Blasts Collection (2008) Review

Mythbusters: Big Blasts Collection (2008)
Average Reviews:

I have nothing but good things to say about Mythbusters as a show. There are some people out there who pick apart Adam and Jamie's techniques or their conclusions, but to those people I say I dare you to find another show on TV that is so compelling, interesting, fun to watch, or that works so well at making you more interested and curious about the world we live in.
However, I have an issue with the way Discovery is compiling these DVD series. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to it. In the first two collections they brought out, the episodes included were completely arbitrary. At least this series has a "theme:" Big Blasts, but still, why can't they just bring these episodes out as a SEASON like most other TV productions? The damage is done now, so I guess from here on out we'll end up with collection after collection of Mythbusters where we'll have NO IDEA what we'll get until we open the box.

Prepare yourself for the kind of fun that requires safety goggles as the MythBusters team takes on tales of exploding pants, steam-powered machine guns and jailbreak methods and blasts a host of hoaxes to smithereens. Then it's time for martinis and tuxedos as Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage put 007's most outrageous gadgets, getaways and guns to the test in action that will leave you shaken and stirred! Salsa Escape: Jamie and Adam attempt to bust out of a Mexican jail using only salsa - will spicy or mild be the best choice? Then in the biggest blast test yet, the MythBusters see if a massive amount of explosives can break up a cement truck filled to the brim with hardened cement. Exploding Port-a-Potty: Could you wind up with third-degree burns from a port-a-potty by lighting a cigarette inside it? The build team will use Adam's "special sample" and find out if human waste can really create enough methane to produce this explosive result. Exploding Pants: Jamie and Adam probe a farm fashion disaster as they solve the mystery of a farmer's exploding pants. Then Adam and Jamie tackle "the Great Gas Conspiracy" and investigate whether the fuel and car companies deliberately make gas-guzzling cars to increase their profits. Air-Cylinder Rocket: Can a cracked valve on a compressed-air cylinder actually blast the tank through a cinder-block wall? The MythBusters team builds the launch pad?then runs for cover. Then Jamie and Adam explore whether it's possible to get an engine running with black powder. Exploding Lighter: Find out if leaving a small butane cigarette lighter in your car on a sunny day can cause your vehicle to explode into flames. Next, the MythBusters try and shoot down some popular "Gunslinger" myths, such as, "is it possible to shoot a hole clean through a tossed coin"? Grenades and Guns: Jame and Adam tackle Tinseltown action-hero cliches: Will a heroic dive onto a live grenade actually save your buddies? Will dunking the ticking time bomb in water dampen the explosion? And finally, will putting a grenade in the fridge chill things out? Exploding Water Heater: Join the MythBusters as they see if an ordinary water heater can build up so much pressure that it rockets through the roof of a house! Meanwhile, the team tries on some all-American legends about blue jeans' flammability. Confederate Steam Gun: The team creates a mythic Civil War-era weapon: a steam-powered machine gun rumored to have fired 400 rounds a minute at a 300-yard range. But could it shoot to kill? And find out if you really can trip up the results in a polygraph test. James Bond Special - Part 1: See the MythBusters create a watch that can deflect a bullet like Bond's could in Live and Let Die, and find out if it's possible to blow up a propane tank by shooting it with a handgun. Then the team recreates 007's most spectacular speed-boat getaways and more killer spy-movie magic. James Bond Special - Part 2: In Part 2, Jamie and Adam pack high explosives into an ordinary ballpoint pen, create a deadly bowler hat to see if it could really slice the head off a statue and build giant steel jaws to see if a metal-mouthed super villain could really chomp through steel cables.

I found it strange that there is no list of episodes, but decided to order the set anyway. I wasn't disappointed: there is some great classic stuff in this set. The episodes are 1 - 6, 34, 36, 37, 40 and 43 and the shop till you drop and MythBusters revealed specials. [...] There doesn't seem to be any region coding on the DVDs.
The episodes look very good, but sometimes I got the impression that the material wasn't filmed with widescreen viewing in mind, the framing can be on the claustrophobic side. (I.e., zoomed in a bit too far.) The earlier episodes have the myths one after the other, and you can select which one you want to watch. This is great. Unfortunately, in the later episodes we get the more familiar interweaving of the myths so you only get to select the beginning of the myth you want to watch but when the program switches to another myth you have to fast forward manually, there are no additional chapter stops.

I'm a total fan of Mythbusters...I have every episode. However..I don't buy them on Amazon. If you want the series...don't get them here. Go to the discovery store. You can get them in order and in full season collections..
And the few specials that they no longer carry are available on iTunes. The shows listed on this collection here are parts of the Pilot episodes (which are actually now considered first season) and bits of season 2. You can get all of these in box sets and in the correct order at the discovery store.
It's where I got ALL of mine. And I've NEVER regretted it.
So my advice is go the online Discovery Store and look up Mythbusters. You can also get really nice t-shirts from there also! But as for watching Mythbusters..I totally recomment that! It's a GREAT show!
