John Oliver: Terrifying Times (2008) Review

John Oliver: Terrifying Times (2008)

"This concert will be coming to you in a British accent. Be prepared for words to have a little more authority than usual."
John Oliver is best known for his mock news reporting on The Daily Show with John Stewart. John Oliver follows in the footsteps of Stephen Colbert and Steve Carrell and easily lives up to expectations. Oliver's special focuses largely on politics, newscasting, and some classic commentary on the differences between Britons and Americans (Oliver was born in Britain and educated at Cambridge). His ability to take the "outsiders" perspective on American life while fully embracing it is unique. I was thrilled to see him get his own 1-hour comedy special on Comedy Central (reproduced here uncensored and with additional features). Highly recommended for fans of the Daily Show and Colbert Report!

Mutant X - The Complete Third Season (2001) Review

Mutant X - The Complete Third Season (2001)

There was a huge movement and after a huge fight, the Mutant X Fandom finally made sure that the third Season was out on DVD and it was definitly well worth the fight we put up.This show just gets better and better every season. Despite the absence of Emma DeLauro (Lauren Lee Smith) the very capable and edgy Lexa Pierce (Karen Cliche) adds a new twist to an already wonderful show.Though she is no Emma many fans immediately warmed up to her and with good reason. She shares a great chemistry witht he other three members of the cast, all of whom seemed to know there characters like anything.
The plot is brilliant.Every episode has amazing twists and turns. And as well as the main storyline and action, every episode the viewers are treated to a new secret about each of the four main characters. So every episode as we reach the climax, we also get closer to the heart of Brennan, Jesse, Lexa and Shalimar.
The only thing I missed was Adam's prescence.John Shea played the part wonderfully, an his guest appearances brought back the old feelings from season one.
This is one any sci-fi /fantasy fan with any taste has to buy.

Son of the Beach, Vol. 1 (2000)

Once "The Shield" became popular, the cable channel FX decided it was too good to air Son of the Beach and cancelled the show. I thought this was a shame...I always thought the show was clever and under-rated, and always fun to watch. Now the show has made it to DVD.
This 3-disc set contains the first 21 episodes from seasons 1 and 2 of the show. The episodes are all hilarious...if you like one, you'll like them all.
There's also some nice extras...there's a funny outtakes reel, and behind the scenes stuff. If you like women wearing next to nothing, there's several new "montages" (Montages being the moments on the show where the characters stop and say "now what would THAT be like?") The best extras are the commentaries on several episodes by Tim Stack, the producers, and assorted cast members. It's clear they had a fun time making the show, and it's interesting to hear them talk about it. I highly recommend this boxset, and I hope they release the rest of seasons 2 and 3.

Simon Schama's Rough Crossings (2009) Review

Simon Schama's Rough Crossings (2009)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm a bit of a Simon Schama fan. His documentaries are gripping and he writes with a verve and humour that makes even prosaic detail seem like high drama. This feature-length documentary tells a fascinating story of the slaves who were induced to fight on the British side of the Revolutionary War and were then treated very shabbily in Nova Scotia before being treated even more shabbily in the newly-created but not at all free "Freetown" in what is now Sierra Leone. The characters in this drama are interesting but Schama-philes may consider that this is not on a par with "Power of Art" or "History of Britain". Perhaps it's the slightly preachy, forlorn tone that tells you, right from the beginning (as it does expressly at the end) that this is not going to be a feel-good story. I do, however, think that this documentary is a quality offering and well worth considering.

Rough Crossings is the astonishing story of the struggle to freedom by thousands of African-American slaves who fled the plantations to fight behind British lines in the American Revolution. With gripping, powerfully vivid story-telling, Simon Schama follows the escaped blacks into the fires of the war, and into freezing, inhospitable Nova Scotia where many who had served the Crown were betrayed in their promises to receive land at the war's end. Their fate became entwined with British abolitionists: inspirational figures such as Granville Sharp, the flute- playing father-figure of slave freedom, and John Clarkson, the 'Moses' of this great exodus, who accompanied the blacks on their final rough crossing to Africa, wher they hoped that freedom would finally greet them.

Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan - Volume 1 (2004) Review

Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan - Volume 1 (2004)
Average Reviews:

After years of little to no success using traditional "treat" based, reward-centric training, I happened to catch Cesar's show. I implemented some simple steps from several episodes - not greeting my dogs until they had calmed down (rewarding calm behavior, not feeding excitement); asking them to sit before I put down the food dish (establishing myself as more of an authority figure), and walking them in a more disciplined fashion (burning off pent-up energy) - what a difference! This man has an innate understanding of canine psychology and behavior. There is nothing violent about his methods at all - he is, in fact, rather soft-spoken, intuitive and even spiritual, though always practical, using a slightly different approach, often focusing, and voicing, the HUMAN problems behind the unwanted dog behavior. This is where his genius lies. Most of it IS about training the human; the dogs tend to get right in line when we figure things out. One thing I really enjoy about his method is that he doesn't say very much when training a dog (no shouting the dog's name incessantly, as most of us owners are guilty of) - he uses simple body language, gentle leash corrections, and tons of consistency to get results. Toss out those fattening treats and clickers, give this a try. Five paws up!

Out of the entire dvd only ONE of the four "collections" is different than the [...] store exclusive collection. All items on dvd except "The Surprising History of Sex and Love with Terry Jones" is on the Discovery Classics dvd Nature of Sex Collection Science & Nature dvd set on that is only sold on Discovery Channel's store online. What shocks me is that that one interview is what makes this worth buying, you can choose this dvd copy for only $10-$20 and the other one is $50. Same exact stuff excluding the other two items on the other one to which are called "Journey of Life-Human Life" & "From Conception to Birth"

Jack Epson is the heart and soul of his simple small town, which doesn't leave a lot of quality time for his family. One day, he is lured out into the woods at the edge of town and is magically put to sleep...asleep for twenty years! He awakes in a high-tech world where he is a stranger to his wife and his now grown-up-daughter. Now only time will tell if he can rebuild what was lost while he was asleep or if time has indeed run out.
A wonderful film for the family with plenty of laughter and hope mixed with just a little magic!
Starring James McDaniel and Mel Harris
