(More customer reviews)I am a veterinarian and I see many behavioral problems. I have euthanized many animals that have taken control of their owners. I am also a college biology instructor and I can assure you that Cesar's methods are right on. Dogs are pack animals, all of them, from pekinese to border collie. They can never escape their genetic background as pack dominated social animals. Cesar uses that pack energy to establish order. The person who talks about pain and intimidation never watched the show. His methods are far more humane than prong collars and crates. I have used his techniques with my clients and have had great success. I thank him daily. Be the pack leader, watch this DVD

(More customer reviews)Having watched every episode of Cesar Millan's first season of "Dog Whisperer" at least three times, I was ready to buy the second season DVD. I think it's even better! In these episodes, Cesar is more frank with the people he is "training", and tells them how they are short-circuiting their dog's behavior by not setting consistent rules, boundaries and limitations. As always, Cesar works a miracle with each dog he rehabilitates. I'm using the same techniques with good results at the local shelter where I work with all kinds of dogs: Rotties, pit bulls, cattle dogs, chihuahuas, labbies, and many other mixes. Even better, Cesar's philosophy also works with PEOPLE. Stay calm and assertive - be a pack leader!

(More customer reviews)You'd think after watching the first two seasons of this show, that I'd begin to anticipate Cesar's dignosis for each set of human/pet combinations he works with, yet I'm still left dumbfounded after each episode, continuously amazed at this man's instinctive understanding of dog/human interaction.
In this 3rd season, Cesar takes to the road and visits a wide variety of locations. The formula remains basically the same, but why fix what isn't broken? If you're a dog lover who enjoyed the first two seasons, there's no reason you shouldn't enjoy the third.
Amidst the sea of garbage television, Dog Whisperer continues to be one of the only shows I enjoy, and certainly one of the only I'll purchase. May there be many more seasons to come.

(More customer reviews)Having watched the DVD, and several of his shows, I was able to apply his principles to a 'rescue' dog, an Irish Wolfhound/Bouvier cross who was an abused dog before his rescue. He was fear-aggressive, especially with men. Being such a large dog [155 lbs], this was not a safe situation.
You might assume that Cesar's 'tricks' will not work with your dog, because he makes them seem so simple. But you would be wrong. They DO work. And the 'turn-around' is amazing. Yes, you have to be consistent. But the amazing thing is how fast the dog responds to the right sort of handling, and how happy they are to let go and let you be the 'pack leader', once you take on that role.
I strongly recommend this book and the DVD to anyone with a problem dog.

(More customer reviews)After years of little to no success using traditional "treat" based, reward-centric training, I happened to catch Cesar's show. I implemented some simple steps from several episodes - not greeting my dogs until they had calmed down (rewarding calm behavior, not feeding excitement); asking them to sit before I put down the food dish (establishing myself as more of an authority figure), and walking them in a more disciplined fashion (burning off pent-up energy) - what a difference! This man has an innate understanding of canine psychology and behavior. There is nothing violent about his methods at all - he is, in fact, rather soft-spoken, intuitive and even spiritual, though always practical, using a slightly different approach, often focusing, and voicing, the HUMAN problems behind the unwanted dog behavior. This is where his genius lies. Most of it IS about training the human; the dogs tend to get right in line when we figure things out. One thing I really enjoy about his method is that he doesn't say very much when training a dog (no shouting the dog's name incessantly, as most of us owners are guilty of) - he uses simple body language, gentle leash corrections, and tons of consistency to get results. Toss out those fattening treats and clickers, give this a try. Five paws up!

(More customer reviews)Cesar has an amazing way about him. He is calm, assertive, and completely rational, no matter what the dog is doing. People often treat dogs as the person would like to be treated, as opposed to how dogs want and need to be treated. In each and every case, it is the human creating or making the issue worse. Cesar begins by training the human, which enables the dog to begin to lead a wholesome life. Disagree that it is the human with the problem? Then why are you thinking of purchasing a dvd for a human to watch and learn from?
It is Your Actions, the Human's Actions, that will make the difference in your dog's life. Cesar lets you know that you have the power to help your dog with whatever problems it may have. He isn't a fluffly, new agey type of person, despite the title of the show. He gets things done, and he does it with compassion, intellect and the strenth of his personality, which he passes on to the people he trains.
Contrary to an earlier review, I have never seen Cesar cause any pain, emotional or physical, to any dog in any of his instructional vidoes or episodes. In fact, in one episode he works with a chronically ill woman who has almost no upper body strength, and is basically a fragile human being. Despite all that, she quickly and easily rehabilitated her dog's aggressive behavior, with no further worries that she will have to physically restrain him. She was able to accomplish the training without any help besides verbal instruction from Cesar.
Any of his episodes or instructional videos will help you understand dogs and what they need, and how you can give them a good life, therebye giving the dog owner a happier life in return.

(More customer reviews)Cesar's approach of using calm assertiveness is gentle and effective. If you are using pain or fear to force your dog to behave how you want, then you are doing it wrong. He uses no tension on the leash unless doing a quick touch or leash movement to redirect the dog's focus - not at all to bring pain. He meets the dogs on their level and helps to 'train' humans on dog psychology, correcting the idea that all dogs are little humans. They aren't, and approaching them using dog psychology works, gently and effectively. Our dog is a lucky recipient of this training method, and he is not only happier, but healthier from the new routine Cesar has outlined for us in this video and in his show on National Geographic Channel - The Dog Whisperer.
