Shooter (Widescreen Edition) (2007) Review

When he is called back to assist a covert military group (headed by Danny Glover) in determining how to pull off an assasination attempt, he soon discovers that he's been set up in an elaborate ruse to take the fall. Hell hath no fury like a Marine scorned, and Swagger becomes a PO'ed two-man army (once he hooks up with disgraced FBI agent Michael Pena), determined to bring the real culprits to justice. Directd by Antoine Fuqua ("Training Day"), this high octane conspiracy thriller just doesn't let up and will keep the viewer guessing. Though it's pretty violent - it's well worth watching!
My only drawback was having to hear Glover's dialogue - was it me or did he have some really ill-fitting dentures that provided him with the most annoying lisp. I was just waiting for them to fall out. Overall though, Glover has not given a more chilling performance since "Witness," and Wahlberg who can also be pretty menacing, proves to be a great action hero.
The DVD extras include a great behind the scenes segment featuring the technical advisor, himself a former military sniper, who provides insight into that occupation as well as the weapons used in the movie.

Ruby and Oswald (2007) Review

(More customer reviews)President Kennedy's murder occurred almost 50 years ago and most Americans were born after it happened or were too young to remember it (yes, I recall exactly where I was when I heard....my elementary school teacher told my class). Much nonsense has been drummed into the heads of Americans so that a majority now believes that some sort of bizarre conspiracy was responsible for the tragedy, some of which do have Oswald as the perpetrator, others claiming that he was a "patsy" and had nothing to do with it.
For those who have little knowledge of the actual events that occurred, viewing this film would be a good start in order to get a basic grip on the known facts of the case. The film focuses on Jack Ruby, who is portrayed in an excellent performance by Michael Lerner (the only really outstanding one in the film), but less so on Oswald, sheddling little light on his motivations and his strange relationship with his wife, her friends, Michael and Ruth Paine, and his mother, Marguerite (who was an interesting story in herself). Lerner shows how Ruby (a very complex man who alternated between a kind, generous personality and another, polar opposite being a hothead who went into tempestuous rages) went into a serious mental deterioration during the weekend following the assassination.
The film does give the sequence of events, showing the time each event occurred and many of the scenes were filmed at the actual location, including the Texas School Book Depository, Dealey Plaza, Oswald's rooming house, the Paine's home, etc. It is important to note the times because they make it VERY clear that Ruby could not have possibly left his home Sunday morning with the intention of shooting Oswald. Ruby went to the Western Union office in order to send a moneygram to one of the girls who worked at his nightclub and he waited in line, in no obvious hurry, and having the timestamp show 11:17 AM. He then wandered down to the police station where Oswald happened to be coming out of the elevator right towards Ruby four minutes later. We are also shown the fact that Ruby took one of his pet dogs with him whom he left in the car. Ruby was quite attached to his dogs (one he calls "his little wife") and he never would have taken the dog if he had known that he might not be coming back.
Regarding Oswald's guilt, it is quite clear that he had the means to shoot the President from the sixth floor of the Depository, he had brought a rifle to work with him when he hithced a ride with Wesley Frazier (claiming they were "curtain rods"), we see him flee the building, take a pistol, later encountering Patrolman J D Tippit and shooting him in front of numerous eyewitnesses. We see his use of multiple ID's for which he refuses to give any explanation, his resisting arrest at the theater, his arrogant attitude during questioning and his confronting the reporters.
It is time for the record to be set straight on this historical tragedy and to have people take an honest look at the evidence which can lead one only to the conclusion that Oswald and Ruby both acted alone and that the Warren Commission, for all its flaws, did get the basic facts right, and this film is not a bad place to start for the beginner.

The Lone Gunmen: The Complete Series (2001) Review

(More customer reviews)The Lone Gunmen finally got their own show -- even if it was sadly short-lived. They were introduced as UFO-chasing supergeeks early in "The X-Files," and soon garnered a cult following -- and eventually a spinoff, complete with tango-dancing kingpins, genius chimps and parallel universes.

The increasingly broke Lone Gunmen are in the middle of stealing a computer chip when a mysterious bearded man -- who turns out to be a beautiful woman, Yves Adele Harlow (Zuleikha Robinson)-- intervenes and gets them caught. After they foil an attempt to ram a plane into a skyscraper, they investigate a geeky golfer's kidnapping, and make a new friend: Jimmy Bond (Stephen Sneddon), a naive young man who gives them financial backing.

With Jimmy as a sort of apprentice Lone Gunman, the boys set out to deal with the conspiracies and strange occurrances: a superintelligent chimp that wants a life of his own, a man who claims to have been abducted by aliens, investigate a Nazi war criminal (who happens to be a little old lady), and search for a car that runs on water instead of gas.

It was a TV tragedy that this funny conspiracy series only lasted half a season. Then again, that's what cult TV is made of. While it lacked the audience and longevity of its parent series "The X-Files," "The Lone Gummen" made up for that in humor and creativity.

Not every episode was so good -- "Three Men and a Smoking Diaper" is just embarrassing, with a none-too-thinly-veiled Senator William Jefferson (Clinton?), a genial Southern womanizer who is just below the angels. Come on, at least TRY to be subtle. However, "Lone Gunmen" hit the mark more often than it missed, with ingeniously offbeat stories that allowed the characters to be goofy as well as serious. ("Prepare to get mooned!")

Certainly the stories tend to be imaginative -- superbrained chimps, trips into prison to save innocent men, and tangoing in competitions. And the humor that cropped up is what makes these stories priceless -- in one episode, poor Langly ends up with his arm up a cow's backside. In others, Jimmy does a spot-on Elvis impersonation, all four guys try to dance (with absurd results), and Frohike toughs it up as a martial arts master (with the help of some wire).

Tom Braidwood, Dean Haglund, and Bruce Harwood all appeared to be having plenty of fun in this series as the geek, the uptight bureaucrat, and the "man of action." (We even get to see all three as kids, talking about what they want to do when they grow up) Sneddon is a great addition as the eager-puppy Jimmy Bond, who seems a lot dumber than he is. And Robinson rounds off the cast as a mystery woman with a ruthless streak and a few vulnerable spots.

Take the funniest episodes of "X-Files," and center them on the Lone Gunmen. "The Lone Gunmen" didn't last long, but it was fun while it lasted -- humorous, goofy, and has Frohike in a bottle-bra.

Invasion - The Complete Series (2005) Review

(More customer reviews)A really outstanding series that started slowly but steadily built momentum over the season, finally rushing to a stunnning Season Finale climax complete with cliffhanger. It SHOULD have been renewed, and evidently was GOING to be until the last moment, when its cast, crew and audience were left shocked by its demise. Production values, writing, and acting are all first-rate, and I love the strong subtext of "family" -- broken families, blended families, families whose members have resentments and fights but still care for each other. Sheriff Tom Underlay makes a great, ambiguous central character who can be favorably compared to Shaun Cassidy's Sheriff Buck from his previous show, "American Gothic." (My feelings about Tom did a complete shift from suspicion to love during the the run of the season, thanks to the clever writers!) Hopefully this series can be saved by the grassroots movement currently gaining momentum, or a new network can be found for its home, but regardless of what happens, Mr. Cassidy deserves praise for this amazing series. At least we have the opportunity to obtain this first season on DVD, for which I'm grateful!
