Living with Wolves/Wolves at Our Door (2005) Review

I've always loved animals. As a "dog person", wolves have always been close to my heart. I've admired their intelligence, free spirit, family bonds and the fact that they mate for life. I've read books about them and watched many documentaries. This film has truly touched my soul. It is an intimate portrait and allows you to peek into their daily life and witness the true nature of this amazing animal. The second video (Wolves at our door) in this DVD set is basically a form of cliff notes, but I didn't mind watching both over and over again ;)
I wholeheartedly recommend this DVD. It is the most beautiful documentary I've seen thus far. It will steal your heart :)

THE DISCOVERY CHANNEL'S TOP-SELLING DOCUMENTARY! Two heart-warming, extraordinary experiences on one disc! For centuries, wolves have been characterized as bloodthirsty beasts, tormentors of ranchers and the bane of helpless livestock. Saving a Species: Gorillas on the Brink (2007) Review

Thought I tend to watch documentaries more then anything else (at least in preference), I'll admit to staying on this film as opposed to skipping past it because of Portman. She strikes me as genuine.
The film does what is supposed to. It shows that these animals seem to have qualities that mimic our own. It shows they are suffering like many of our own. It shows that it doesn't take many people to really make a difference in the world.
These gorilla's are in essence becoming Refugees.

The recent mysterious killings of four critically endangered gorillas in the Virunga National Park, bordering Rwanda and Congo, sent shockwaves through the international conservationist community. In a twist of fate, Animal Planet recently filmed a television special documenting gorillas from this region and their desperate struggle to survive. Golden Globe winner and Oscar®-nominated actress Natalie Portman (Closer, Garden State, the Star Wars trilogy) partnered with Animal Planet to appear in this new special as part of her recent travels to Rwanda. There, she witnessed firsthand the plight of the diminishing number of gorillas in the region shortly before the recent accounts. Welcomed by the Rwandan government, Portman and animal icon Jack Hanna spotlight the gorillas - who so closely resemble humans - in an international effort to bring attention to their dire crisis. GORILLAS ON THE BRINK, slated to air this fall as part of Animal Planet's Emmy® Award-winning series SAVING A SPECIES, is an intimate journey through the mysterious lives of these endangered primates.

Jeff Corwin Experience, Season 2 (2002) Review

Jeff Corwin Experience, Season 2 (2002)
Average Reviews:

TV host Jeff Corwin is a big bundle of boyish enthusiasm, skipping through rainforests and desert landscapes in search of rare and unusual animals. It's like having Joey and Ross from "Friends" fused into a single character, and then set out on safari with a film crew in tow: Corwin is physical and rambunctious, but also knowledgeable and able to rattle off scientific facts about poisonous critters that he's just dug out of the underbrush -- obviously working from memory, since the viper or dart frog or whatever isn't waiting around for him to read anything off of a cue card.
The show has an appealing improvisational air about it, with has its plusses and minuses. On the plus side, the show is exciting and quickly draws you in; Corwin has a cheerful, magnetic presence and his enthusiasm for nature comes through clearly. He also consistently works in eco-friendly messages and talks about having respect for nature, about leaving wild animals alone (especially dangerous ones) and about the need to protect habitat, etc. On the down side, you get a nagging feeling that there's a lot of information that is being left out, and that the mini-lectures Corwin delivers while, say, holding the deadliest viper in Central America, might not be as thorough as it might otherwise be. Corwin is sensitive to how much each animal is willing to put up with, and once he drops the animal back into the wild, the encounter (and the lecture) is over with. Also, his hands-on approach seems pretty invasive -- even though he often is taking part in scientific studies (tagging animals, etc.) and takes great pains to explain that what he is doing has been officially sanctioned, the overall effect may be to encourage audience members to mess about with wild animals themselves, which may have unfortunate consequences.
On balance, though, the show is informative and one of the most amusing aspects is how totally into snakes Corwin is. So, if you like to see rare and deadly and beautiful serpents, this is definitely the show for you! There are plenty of mammals and birds, too, but Corwin does love the creepy crawlies. Overall this is a fun show, definitely worth checking out. (Joe Sixpack, ReadThatAgain kid's reviews)
