As a diehard Monarch fan, I will gobble up as much of it as I can get! But I wouldn't claim season 5 as their best. As ever though, the scenery is astounding and the characters always intriguing.
Not to give too much away, Duncan makes a quizzical (read: poor) dating choice, Molly gets swept up in a rollercoaster of love of her own, Paul makes another appearance with a difficult request, and Archie and Lexie face maybe the biggest, toughest decision of their relationship. Of course, some new faces make their entrances, and most importantly, a few dearly loved faces make their exits.
So for those (like me) who love it all, this collection is a must-have. But for those who prefer to cherry-pick the series, I'd recommend seasons 1 and 3 as the best of all.

Archie's brother Paul returns to Glenbogle and is enlisted into helping to run the estate. Although this brings him into conflict with Archie and Lexie, who feels left out of their close relationship, it also allows Archie to think about his role and the world beyond Glenbogle. Then his sister Lizzie arrives and provides Archie and Lexie with their toughest dilemma yet. Meanwhile, Molly and Andrew's deepening relationship falters when a revelation leaves Molly reeling. She seeks solace in her old friend Golly, whose feelings for her are stronger than he suspected. The arrival of his daughter Jessica also forces him to take a crash course in parenting. Despite having a new girlfriend -- Kilwillie's niece Hemione -- Duncan is attracted to Jessica, who has usurped him as Golly's deputy.

The second season of MONARCH is just as good as, if not better, than the first. This is one of those rare series where you care about every single character, so no matter which character is the focus of the episode you are right there rooting for them. Hector is as cantakerous and lovable as ever, and even surprising at one point. Molly is another surprise, as usual, shrewd one minute and air-headed the next. When she is around, you know everything will be all right. Archie, one of the few sane ones in the bunch, struggles and stumbles along, like most of us. The romantic obstacles get to be a bit much between him and his love interest(s). I guess they would have been easier to take once a week than all at once. All the 'supporting players' are strong enough to be the stars of the show, and sometimes they are. And there are some new people added in. I especially like the expansions into the village. It rounds out the story, placing it in a larger context. These are people you would love to know, to be friends with and to revisit over and over, which is why this DVD, along with its first season, is a definite keeper.

The second series of this heartwarming BBC hit features more humor, more beautiful scenery and more great moments with BBC stars Richard Briers and Susan Hampshire. Archie MacDonald has finally pledged himself to Glenbogle, but now faces a titanic struggle to make the estate turn a profit. The young laird has visionary plans for his ancient homestead, but faces fresh challenges at every turn from rebellious tenants, local vendettas, scheming gold diggers, not to mention his eccentric family and the three beautiful young women who are all vying for his affection.

I just don't understand the negative reviews. Series 3 had some of the wittiest episodes to date as well as the most heart-wrenching ones. It introduces some memorable new characters, including Stella, an alpha female banker handpicked to bring Glenbogle out of debt. Hector and Molly are as charming and as eccentric as ever. This is a series not to be missed, and I wish Series 4 would come out quickly, since in the U.K., Series 5 has already been released. Monarch of the Glen is television at its best.

Archie MacDonald continues his struggles to make Glenbogle a success. First he must answer to the bank's new manager, then face a smooth operator who has his eye on Ben Bogle. Add in his father's usual mischief and the young laird barely has enough time to sort out his love life, which proves to be as complicated as ever. Okay, I have been a Monarch fan for some time and I must tell you up front I love the original Monarch characters. I really miss Hector and Killwillie. Weren't you getting tired of Lexi in Series 5? They had done everything they could do with her character and if they were smart they would have shipped her and Archie off together to live happily ever after and raise some baby lairds. Unfortunately, the writers turned our beloved Lexi into a harpie by having her make out with her brother in law, Paul, as Molly watches. This scene really made my skin crawl. How about a little honor in the Highlands? This really sullied the characters of Lexi and Paul. Anyway, this season pretty well purges the old Monarch cast with the exception of Golly and Molly. It still didn't make sense to get rid of Duncan. And the way they did it was awful. He didn't even have a heart to heart with Jess before he left. The real Duncan could never do that to a pal. If they would have kept Duncan around at least Golly would have had someone to talk too. Keep in mind that this is not the Old Monarch that we are used to. There are plenty of new characters and it gives us a chance to see Glenbogle in a new light. I know I was getting bored with the bitter, business woman/laird Lexi. They sucked all the fun out of her character once she got married. Anyway, this season is a refreshing change and Uncle Donald (from Dr. Who) is every bit as eccentric as his brother Hector. If you are a die hard Monarch fan I would purchase this item. Keep in mind this isn't like any of the past series and all your old friends have left. But the new tenants of Glenbogle did keep me watching. Hey BBC, how about a Christmas at Glenbogle with all our old pals returning for a family friendly holiday season?

Monarch of the Glen, having finished as a series in Great Britian, is trickling out slowly on DVD to the States. I have seen the fourth series thanks to our Canadian cousins, and can assure viewers the series continues to feature clever thematic writing to go along with the outstanding cast and unsurpassed scenery. The almost effortless merging of several plot lines continues to move each Episode along. The show's writers have shown a willingness to move the story in different directions, while most of the fine cast of regulars are starting to open out their roles. Particularily impressive has been the symbolic expansion through the wolves project - one does not expect this degree of art from a television series.
Frankly one has to go back to the days of Brideshead Revisited for a television show of such richness.

Monarch of the Glen - Series 7 (2001)

There is an arc to all series, with a point somewhere in the middle being considered the apex. So while series 7 isn't the classic era of Monarch of the Glen it nevertheless has some great stories, quite a few endearing moments, and great acting. There are few missteps here, the primary one being Duncan's unbelievable return. I really enjoyed the Duncan McKay character but it seemed improbable that a gilly would take off for the big city to be a DJ, so perhaps that story line was destined to fall flat. However, most of the other story lines reach a satisfying conclusion.
I'll miss the folks at Glen Bogle quite a bit (including Duncan), but it was nice to have a satisfying farewell.

This is addictive stuff. My social life has suffered for the last 2 weekends and my house is reaching the level of candidacy for "Clean House".
I had seen a jumble of episodes on tv, but between PBS begathons when the show was pre-empted and business committments I wasn't able to see the entire series and get the full flavor of it.
I love the series, the characters, and the scenery. I want to live in Glenbogle! The characters and story lines sort of suck you in.
If you buy the complete series be prepared. Don't make any unbreakable appointments or committments. It's hard to "put down"
