David Alan Grier - The Book of David: The Cult Figure's Manifesto (2003) Review
Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)We watched the show when it aired on Comedy Central and missed the first 10 minutes. ... This has got to be one of the funniest stand-up routines I've ever seen. David Alan Grier's comedy is right up there with classic George Carlin, Bill Cosby and Eddie Murphy stand-up comedy.

Ralph S. Mouse and More Exciting Animal Adventure Stories (Scholastic Video Collection) (2007) Review
Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)What the first reviewers apparently did not know is that this video is part of a larger collection of videos which bring favorite children's stories to video. This one does contain one episode of the Ralph S. Mouse series, as well as several other titles. There are dozens of Scholastic Video Collection videos, all available on both DVD or VHS as far as I know. They are great videos, which all 4 of my kids have enjoyed. Most have bonus stories in addition to the two or three listed on the back, some have interviews with authors or illustrators, and some have read-along features or Spanish-language versions.
If you are looking for the complete series of Ralph S. Mouse, look somewhere else. If you are looking for children's books animated on video, then this is a good one to start with.

So You Think You Can Dance Get Fit: Cardio Funk (2009) Review
Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)Especially while the show is airing, who doesn't want to feel like they can be part of So you think you can dance! Totally fun to dance with a bunch of dancers from past seasons, and get a great workout at the same time.
Three different styles of dance routines (hip hop, contemporary, and disco), you can pick one or do all three, and there are separate chapters for the instructions to learn the routines that you can skip and go straight to the workouts after you get them down. Learning the steps is nice and slow, and easy to follow or repeat if you get lost. Then in the workouts they start with doing the routine counting, and get faster, add music, until it's more like a performance at the end - just music no counting at full speed. There is also a bonus dance that mixes the styles together. The dancers on the video are Travis, Katee, Dmitry, Twitch, Lauren, and Courtney.
My only slight complaint is the music is a bit generic, so you aren't going to feel like you are telling any kind of story in the routine like from the show, but after all it is an exercise dvd, so this isn't that big of a deal. It would be cool if they came out with a couple that were focused more on just dance so you feel more like a real routine though. But for now I'm pretty happy they did this at all, and I'm looking forward to trying the other one, Tone and Groove!

Jim Gaffigan - Beyond the Pale (2005) Review
Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)I caught this twice on TV and both times was laughing so hard it hurt. I just had to buy it so I could show it to more people. We must watch it at home at least a couple times a month now, and show it to everyone we can. Gaffigan is a genius in this: he is so funny, discusses so many common themes for his jokes (laziness, eating) with only a couple insinuating jokes that might be innappropriate, otherwise very clean-cut and not filled with bad language like so many other comedians. I am so glad I bought this, it has been so worth it and gotten so much time from my DVD player. We are always quoting from this, just so much of it is so true! You will love it and not be sad you spent the small price to buy it. There are some cute special features too, but the routine is the best part.

Under the white guy "everyman" exterior lurks one of the cleverest original comedians of today. An established star in standup comedy and a frequent guest on the late shows of David Letterman and Conan O'Brien, Jim Gaffigan is a noted actor as well, from comedic turns in Super Troopers, That 70s Show and Sex and the City to dramatic roles in dozens of films and TV dramas. But here his unique comedy persona takes over -- cantankerous but endearing, clean but cutting, with an irrepressible "inside voice" that keeps wickedly popping out - to the delight of the audience in Chicago's historic Vic Theater. And now you can share their guffaws.

Lexx - Series 2, Vol. 2 (2000) Review
Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)4.5 stars. First off, the DVD transfer has improved considerably from the first volume, for some odd reason. Volume 2 finds "The Lexx" in full stride, using savage satire and even more sexual innuendo than before. I will break up my review into four parts, each one concerning a different episode.
2.5 Lafftrak--This is my favorite on the DVD for the undeniable fact that it is a satire on the television industry. It starts out with two elite warriors of TV World in spacecraft trying to shoot one another down, all the while claiming that the other network faked their ratings. They are the only two remaining inhabitants and they do everything to win the fight. Later in the episode Stan, Xev, and 790 all drop down to TV World and take part in a carnival of television shows with robots as actors. If they fail to get good ratings they will have their heads severed and become permanent members of the studio audience. This all makes for some bizarre moments and some great dark humor.
2.6 Stan's Trial--This is a refresher course on Stan's history, and his apparently dire need to find willing females. It seems some things never change. This is the least funny of the 4 episodes, but it is still worth watching for some jet black humor.
2.7 Love Grows--I was absolutely howling with laughter on this one. Three Space Truckers (2 men, 1 woman) are eaten by The Lexx, cargo included. The cargo holds a strange and deadly gene-altering virus that changes errogenous zones into their opposites. It was simply masterful to hear Xev call out after the high-pitched Stan in a low, manly voice, after making love, to make her something to eat before he leaves. This has some crazy camera effects and biting satire on the tendencies of both sexes. Even The Lexx, itself, becomes female and wants reassurance. Brilliant!
2.8 White Trash--"You'll never find me!" cries the hillbilly stowaway to Kai, who he thinks is the Law out to get him. This final episode on the DVD has some very funny moments and witty double-entendres like "You touched my bone!" For the record, Pa is referring to a leg-bone club he likes carrying around to intimidate Stan. Stan finally finds a girl to give him the time of day and is soonafter forced to agree to marry her under threat of a pummeling death. Why the hillbilly clan is there in the first place is a mystery, but just go with it. They have some crazy moments worth remembering.
This is, without a doubt, the most original Sci-fi series ever created.

Russell Brand in New York City (2009) Review
Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)Personally, I feel Russell is at his best when it's unscripted, off-the-cuff banter. He's very quick, and that atmosphere showcases his humor best. That said, I give this stand-up show a B+. Russell's ability to make mundane, everyday things hilarious is a quality that isn't unique or special (it's kind of a pre-requisite for calling yourself a comedian). What makes Russell special is the way he takes a situation or event, and instead of using the first or even second most likely word/phrase to describe it, he goes way down on the list to grab a term that you've probably only heard 3 times in your life, but fits perfectly. Again, simply doing this isn't earth-shattering, but Russell is so smart, and has so many random references in his mind, that you're likely to be caught off-guard by the way he describes things.
He's obviously a smart man (either the drugs didn't addle his brain much, or he started out Mensa-level), and his spontaneous comedy shows it better than his scripted comedy.

Talking to Heaven (2002) Review
Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)Why they changed the title is questionable since "Living With The Dead" is much more appropriate. Husband and wife, Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen, head an extremely fine cast in a film that will hold your attention regardless of whether you define it as fiction or non. Ted does a credible Van Praagh but Mary steals the show with her superb portayal of a borderline skeptic detective who puts her reputation on the line. And she looks terrific. A suprising entree is Jack Palance. The old pro never misses a beat and can still steal a scene. The same can be said of Michael Moriarty who continues to be one of our finer character actors.
The real deal, Mr. Van Praagh himself, can be seen in a quick cameo as the church organ player.
3 hours of fine film. Nice job.

David Blaine - Fearless (2002) Review
Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)You may have caught some of "street magician" David Blaine's act on his TV specials that had limited runs. Not too worry; "David Blaine: Fearless" gathers them all up, and throws them all onto one DVD, and then some. You can generally find this DVD priced the same as "discount" DVDs, so you won't be paying the normal $20 plus that DVDs command.
Blaine's amazing tricks are super-cool but wouldn't have held their own displayed merely in a Vegas showroom; it's the who and where that makes this DVD special. Blaine often performs his tricks up close and with plenty of audience participation, to an extremely diverse set of people. He bites a quarter in half and spits it back to make it whole in front of some LA street thugs. He performs his famous levitation at the Dallas Cowboys training camp, sending Deion Sanders running, his wits barely intact. He pulls various "pick a card" tricks on a pair of grandmothers sitting on a bench, despite their initial declaration that they're not into magic tricks. A bunch of soccer girls at a rest stop scream with glee when makes a name appear out of ash.
Blaine even ventures into a remote South American jungle, where an tribe that has been mostly isolated from civilization serves as the challenge; the only way he can communicate with them is magic, but will "pick a card" mean anything to them or impress a culture with no concept of quarters, Aces or Spades? Blaine adapts and amazes them by squeezing drinkable amounts of water from random places or making a ball multiply within a closed fist. He does this again with other journeys to foreign areas.
Many of Blaine's tricks are true head-scratchers that will leave even the most cynical viewer amused. I've already described a significant amount of his simpler tricks, so I'll leave the rest for the DVD to show, including an act that is more endurance than magic: fighting hypothermia and mental breakdowns as he remains encased in an ice prison on a busy sidewalk for a couple of days.
He has a different sort of charisma; he's so laid back but you still get the sense that he truly treats magic as an art, not as an attempt to hoodwink you; but at the same time he isn't so overly serious that you can associate with him.
This is a great DVD to have; magic is an all-genre, all-gender thing. You can pop "Fearless" in anytime at any setting, be it a small gathering, a big party, or in your portable DVD player while waiting for your flight at the airport. There's very little filler material, which is a good thing; they've packed in as much material as they can.
A must-buy for anyone.

Batman: The Complete Animated Series (2008) Review
Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)In 1992, Bruce Timm and Paul Dini revolutionized animation and redefined what a "kids cartoon" could be by bringing their vision of Batman alive on the small screen. Though based on the foundation of the 1989 "Batman" film and it's sequel "Batman Returns" which came out the same year, the series was not an adaptation of that concept, characters, or world. It stood independent of everything that had come before or would come later. It combined only the best elements of the other incarnations, and become something else: a legend in it's own right.
It did not pander down to it's target audiences youth, but instead walked a very fine line between remaining acceptable for all ages and embracing the true mythos of the dark knight. It featured forensic science at a time before such was common place, it showcased the often overlooked detective skills and intelligence of Bruce Wayne/Batman, and did something that no other incarnation of the Batman universe has ever been able to do - before or in it's wake - it pleased everyone without compromise.
If you ask 1,000 Batman fans what the greatest incarnation of "Batman" is to them, including the comics, about 980 of them will tell you "Batman: The Animated Series" as their answer. It offered everything everyone loved about each version that had come before or has come since in perfect balance. It did things no one thought possible, either for Batman or for a "kids show". It truly changed things, and no other animated series has ever lived up to the bar it set.
Nothing before it had been ever so mature without getting into 'adult' themes. By comparison, today's "kids cartoons" are true to the definition; cartoons and caricatures of their sources and of reality. "Batman: the Animated Series" was a truly realistic show that anyone from any age from 2 to 82 could sit down and enjoy. If you are a Batman fan and you have not seen this series, or if you had but do not yet own it... this is worth every penny.

The SpongeBob Squarepants Movie (Widescreen Edition) (2004) Review
Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)Relentlessly optimistic, drunk and defeated, man-child, sponge-man -- this movie has it all. Most of the parents in the audience didn't get it. But I've been an outspoken SpongeBob fan for years. Hell, I'll bet I like the television show even more than my children do -- and they like it a lot.
It's hard to describe this film, at least in a way that will do it justice. Is it great? In it's own twisted, surreal way, sure. It's littered with double entendres, to be sure, and a few nautical butt cheeks, too. I suppose the studio insisted on the latter. The bottom line is that we need SpongeBob, maybe more than we ever did. His good cheer in the face of disaster is downright inspirational. Plus, he can blow bubbles with the best of them.
The evil villain, Plankton, speaks for all of us when he says, "His chops are too righteous!"

Stargate SG-1 Season 5 Boxed Set (2001) Review
Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)I know this isn't everyone's opinion, but for me, each season gets better and better. Writers and actors get to know the characters and a story more when they've made over 100 episodes with them. (Episode 100 is included in this set, an episode where the writers just decide to mess around and have a good time)
Season 5 introduces some very key characters and situations:
--Colonol Frank Simmons
--Explanation of the ascended being ("Ascention" and "Meridian")
--The jaffa rebellion ("The Warrior")
--Further Russian entanglements including the fate of the Earth DHD ("48 Hours")
--The introduction of Anubis ("Last Stand," "Revelations")
--The fate of the Tollan ("Between Two Fires")
--The temperary departure of Michael Shanks ("Meridian")
--The method of Asguard reproduction ("Revelations")
--Jonas Quinn ("Meridian")
All of these situations play key in the epic saga of the Stargate universe, providing for plot variations and new ideas in later seasons. The new ideas are still there. The humor is still there. Over 100 episodes in, Stargate is still going strong in this collection.
I am looking forward to adding this 5th boxed set to my other four boxed sets.
I enjoyed Season 6 even better. Season 7 is still blowing my mind. Let's have those as boxed sets soon as well.

Cirque du Soleil - Solstrom - The Complete Series (2003) Review
Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)While the acts performed in Solstrom, a 13-part television series, are not always truly comparable to the acts on stage, this program has many amazing acts which never made it into a show but could, and should, have.
Some would have been quite difficult to merge into a show. One I remember, which was amazing, was a husband/wife team who juggled together, using their hands, feet etc. Perfect together, and amazing to watch, but I am not sure how that could have made it into a Quidam or another show......but that in no way takes away from what they did.
Some acts, such as Viktor Kee's other-worldly juggling, had poor lighting for the show compared to the Dralion stage he had. But they are all still memorable.
Some acts have actually added stunts, such as the acrobats at the end of Quidam. In one sequence in Quidam, two of the acrobats are jettisoned and one goes over the other. In Solstrom, amazingly enough, four now do what two did. It is incredible, and nice to see how Cirque is always tweaking and making the shows better, impossible as that may seem.
The show's story line admittedly was a bit contrived, but I do not think anyone tuned in to see the underlying story line. Cirque never ceases to amaze me. If you like Cirque, this is a must have.

Futurama - Bender's Big Score (2007) Review
Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)Yes! The Year 3000 is back!! This is all-new material, NOT RECYCLED or from 4 seasons offered in volumes 1-4 or Monster Fun. All new from the Simpson's creator Matt Groening and the Futurama team.
It's here the first of the 4 "NEW" FUTURAMA direct-to-DVD videos, 3 of which will be released throughout 2008. Following "BENDER'S BIG SCORE" will be, "INTO THE WILD GREEN YONDER" then, "BENDER'S GAME" and THE BEAST WITH A BILLION BACKS." The features will be cut into an episode format to air eventually on Comedy Central, not Cartoon Network.
Each of these feature the brilliant original voice talent, from the short-lived fox series: John Di Maggio (as Bender and others), Dave Herman (as the Honorable Mayor C. Randall Poopenmayer and more ) Katey Sagal (Leela), Phil LaMarr (Hermes), Lauren Tom (Amy Wong), Billy West (Fry, Zoidberg, Farnsworth, an other Futurama, but known as Stimpy and from the Howard Stern Show, West does the best LARRY FINE in the business), old school veterans like Frank Welker (here for Nibbler but he's the original Fred Jones, if you saw Saturday morning, you can bet he was in it) and Maurice LaMarche (as Morbo, but LaMarche was on the original Transformers, amoung other projects) and Tress a.k.a. "Skinner's Mom" MacNeille (most recently played the "Spider-Pig" in Simpson's Movie). This time around Sarah Silverman is a guest along with others, like Star War's Mark Hamill.
The Story:
The Planet Express crew are back, only to be accidently sold to evil nudist aliens in an internet racket (remember kids don't give out personal info. on-line). The aliens desire information and upon learning the secret of paradox-free time travel is tatooed onto Fry's butt, the turn Bender into an evil (well more-evil) time-traveling killing/stealing machine. Incidently, Leela nearly wed, a major character is beheaded and the Universe is torn asunder.
This paradox-free nature creates an op for lots of return appearances and cool cameos. The opening credits goof nicely on the epic-DVD movie release, filled with glam-shots of the characters and their full names. Any questions explained are quickly replaced by more confusing questions.
The spirit of the original series is easily matched and able to sustain the 89 min. movie format.
As always the Futurama DVD extras are insanely funny and worthly of the name "special features." For example, a full-episode of "EVERYBODY LOVES HYPNOTOAD" (a 20+ min. gag that you need to let run in its course to fully appreciate the joke), an animated promo for Al Gore's Inconvenient Truth, a MATH LECTURE, I said a "MATH LECTURE" really! Many of the Producers & writers involved with Futurama are Math Majors even PHDs. So the Math Lecture is a full segment in which a Math Prof. discusses and explains the use of math in the original series as well as the new material. The lecture also explains the ALIEN SYMBOLS and even reveals a hidden character to help truly OCD fans to decode the latest symbols.
Other extras include Comic-Con full-cast Futurama comicbook reading!
I can't wait for the next installment of the DVD series.

Wonder Woman (2009) Review
Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)Warner Bros. Premiere have been putting out DC Universe animated features revolving around the Detective Comics characters. First came Superman: Doomsday based on the record selling comic book story in which Superman is actually killed, second came Justice League: The New Frontier based on award winning graphic novel's about the earliest beginnings of the Justice League, then Batman: Gotham Knight was animated with strong anime influence and told several stories set between the two latest live action films (Batman Begins and The Dark Knight). Now we can finally experience the animated DC Universe depiction of Wonder Woman's origin.
The plot is about the amazon princess Diana, on the secluded Island Themyscira, first meeting Steve Trevor, a pilot who crash lands on the island of no men. After fighting in a tournament against fellow competing amazons for the right to escort Trevor back to 'man's world' Diana dons the Wonder Woman outfit for her first time and heads on her first outing. As she tries to understand the world of man Diana must deal with the threat of God Of War Ares, who has escaped from a centuries long imprisonment and is looking to start trouble.
Voice casting includes Keri Russell (Famous for Felicity, and more recently Waitress, August Rush and Bedtime Stories) as the young Wonder Woman. Nathan Fillion (co-starred with Russell in Waitress) as Steve Trevor. Alfred Molina (Doc Oc in Spider-man 2) as God Of War Ares, Virigina Madsen (Co-star of Jim Carrey in Number 23) as Diana's mother Queen Hippolyta and Rosario Dawson (Seven Pounds with Will Smith) as Dianna's rival amazon Artemis.
There are three versions released. The Blu-Ray, the Two-Disc Special Edition DVD (with Digital Copy) and the Single Edition DVD. Features included with the Two-Disc DVD and Blu-Ray will be:
Disc 1- Commentary by the creative team, also as is customary with these releases a first look at DC/Warner's next animated feature project 'Green Lantern'.
Disc 2- 2 Documentaries- Wonder Woman: A Subversive Dream, and Wonder Woman Daughter of Myth: Historical Amazon Lore and it's Evolution into the Modern Day Wonder Woman Character. Also as usual with these releases two episodes selected from the Justice League series are included as Bruce Timm's favorite picks: To Another Shore and Hawk And Dove.
The feature itself has a running time of 74 min. and is presented like the other features in widescreen format. These features are PG-13 and this one works hard to earn that rating. There are nods to adult situations (often occuring in brief passing or to provide humor) as well as alot of action scenes and killing but only a few specific uses of blood. This is not something recommended for children but is perfect for preteens and teenagers. Still parent's are capable of using their own discretion.
About the quality you can expect if you haven't seen the other recent features, DC/Warner have been delivering top notch animation on these features rivaling that of Disney's straight to DVD releases and I think this one has the best animation yet. The stories are always well written and stay true to source materials that the characters are taken from. Another thing these new features have done well is providing alot of well staged action scenes and still delivering fine moments of character development/exploration that I haven't seen since Batman The Animated Series.
This is the first solo animated feature for Wonder Woman and I feel it portrays her with the dignity DC's third biggest icon deserves and the same respect she was granted in the Justice League series, which to me is the most believably she has been depicted thus far (if only because of her lack of exposure in this medium to date). I hope there will be some sort of sequels developed for this film as it was such a good starting point for the character that it seems a shame to leave off here when she has really only just begun her role as Wonder Woman as the feature reaches it's end.
Overall the animation was spectacular, the best Warner Premiere has done yet. The story while suffering some pacing issues (to be expected in a 74 min. feature trying to tell such an epic story), was true to the character and is overall well done and enjoyable. The score was worthy of a summer blockbuster and perfectly matched the epic tone. The voice actor's were for the most part spot on and made me believe the character's and think of them as seperate entities from the actor's voicing them. There is even a fair amount of humor and a bit of a love story mixed into the plot that only adds to the viewer's enjoyment. As well the DVD has a fair amount of special features that I found enjoyable to watch. I definitely give it 5 stars on blue spandex, especially for anyone who is a fan of well depicted heroines or Wonder Woman herself. Thanks For Your Time.

(More customer reviews)Very cute. I loved the dog in this movie - I wish I could have one just like him. This is a good one to sit down and watch with the whole family on a lazy Sunday afternoon. This dog is smart! And he looks out for people, like his master and the boy who gets lost - a really fun and loving story.
